Book SynopsisThere's more to Banksy than the painting on the wall: the first in-depth investigation into the mysteries of the world's most famous living artist.Banksy is the world's most famous living artist, yet no one knows who he is. For more than twenty years, his wryly political and darkly humorous spray paintings have appeared mysteriously on urban walls around the globe, generating headlines and controversy. Art critics disdain him, but the public (and the art market) love him. With this generously illustrated book, artist and critic Carol Diehl is the first author to probe the depths of the Banksy mystery. Through her exploration of his paintings, installations, writings, and Academy Award-nominated film, Exit through the Gift Shop, Diehl proves unequivocally that there's more to Banksy than the painting on the wall.Seeing Banksy as the ultimate provocateur, Diehl investigates the dramas that unfold after his works are discovered, with all of their social, econ

Book SynopsisFrom the acclaimed designer and bestselling author of Reimagining Design, a nonlinear approach to navigating design?s nuances in pursuit of meaningful innovation. In Nonlinear, Kevin Bethune shows us that we can reject trodden paths of digital or physical product creation by taking advantage of a nonlinear approach. To unlock meaningful innovation that breeds new and novel outcomes, he writes, teams need to embark on a journey into the proverbial forest of ambiguity, the result of a rapidly converging, dynamic, and exponentially changing landscape. The journey is less about getting it right or wrong, and more about using the information we have at our disposal to understand our choices and unlock new learning. Nonlinear begins by taking the reader through Bethune?s professional zigs and zags. The author explains that while his interdisciplinary leaps were rare at the time he took them, these varied experiences unlocked perspectives about design and innovation that uniquely prepared him for our present moment and for the future. He then showcases the role of quantitative information to strategically frame and set boundary conditions for our creative exploration, and he highlights the role of qualitative insights to provide the substance necessary to begin crafting solutions that address unmet needs. The book also identifies accelerants (or flywheels) that will help readers as they reflect on their journey through the forest of ambiguity, with a specific emphasis on diversity, a key theme for Bethune, a Black man who has navigated new horizons. Readers will enjoy having the chance to customize the author?s perspectives and make them their own at both an individual and a team level.

Book SynopsisA monumental, lavishly illustrated book that offers the first global portrait of a complex and definition-defying genre of cultural production.Over the past twenty years, an abundance of art forms have emerged that use aesthetics to affect social dynamics. These works are often produced by collectives or come out of a community context; they emphasize participation, dialogue, and action, and appear in situations ranging from theater to activism to urban planning to visual art to health care. Engaged with the texture of living, these art works often blur the line between art and life. This book offers the first global portrait of a complex and exciting mode of cultural production—one that has virtually redefined contemporary art practice.Living as Form grew out of a major exhibition at Creative Time in New York City. Like the exhibition, the book is a landmark survey of more than 100 projects selected by a thirty-person curatorial advisory team; each projec

  • William Morris Romantic to Revolutionary

The Merlin Press Ltd William Morris Romantic to Revolutionary

Book SynopsisWilliam Morris-the great 19th century craftsman, architect, designer, poet and writer-remains a monumental figure whose influence resonates powerfully today. As an intellectual (and author of the seminal utopian News From Nowhere), his concern with artistic and human values led him to cross what he called the 'river of fire' and become a committed socialist-committed not to some theoretical formula but to the day by day struggle of working women and men in Britain and to the evolution of his ideas about art, about work and about how life should be lived. Many of his ideas accorded none too well with the reforming tendencies dominant in the Labour movement, nor with those of 'orthodox' Marxism, which has looked elsewhere for inspiration. Both sides have been inclined to venerate Morris rather than to pay attention to what he said. Originally written less than a decade before his groundbreaking The Making of the English Working Class, E.P. Thompson brought to this biography his now traTrade Review"Two impressive figures, William Morris as subject and E. P. Thompson as author, are conjoined in this immense historical study, and both of them have gained in interest since the first edition of the book was published." New York Times Book Review

Book SynopsisThe first book to be published on the work of their partnership (in 2001), Design Noir is the essential primary source for understanding the theoretical and conceptual underpinnings for Dunne & Raby's work. Consisting of three elements - a manifesto' on the possibilities of designing with and for the secret life' of electronic objects; notes for an embryonic network of critical designers and, most famously, the presentation of the Placebo Project a prototype for a critical design poetics enacted around electronic furniture-objects Design Noir offers an in-depth exploration of one of the most seminal design projects of the last two decades, one that arguably initiated speculating through design in its contemporary forms. By detailing the logic and character of the objects that were constructed; the involvement of users with these objects over-time, and in the creation of a new kinds of spatially and temporally distributed moments of critique and engagement with thingsTrade ReviewLike a trap door to a room we didn’t know existed, Design Noir opened up a space for a critical design practice that was wholly unexplored in its time. Today, that space seems not only obvious and essential, but inevitable. The impact of Design Noir has been inestimable. And the aftershocks from this unassuming but masterful book are still reverberating decades later. * Jamer Hunt, Vice Provost for Transdisciplinary Initiatives at The New School, USA and Associate Professor of Transdisciplinary Design, Parsons, USA *Only now that speculation through design has come into its own can we see the full legacy of this mischievous and engaging book. Book Synopsis''It is right that, after more than one hundred years, she should have her say'' John Carey, Sunday TimesTwelve days before her twenty-fourth birthday, on the foggy morning of Saturday 12 January 1901, Ida Nettleship married Augustus John in a private ceremony at St Pancras Registry Office. The union went against the wishes of Ida's parents, who aspired to an altogether more conventional match for their eldest daughter. But Ida was in love with Augustus, a man of exceptional magnetism also studying at the Slade, and who would become one of the most famous artists of his time. Ida's letters to friends, to family and to Augustus reveal a young woman of passion, intensity and wit. They tell of the scandal she brought on the Nettleship family and its consquences; of hurt and betrayal as the marriage evolved into a three-way affair when Augustus fell in love with another woman, Dorelia; of Ida's remarkable acceptance of Dorelia, their pregnancies and shared domesticity; of Trade ReviewIt is a terrible ending to a terrible story. You might say that it was all Ida’s fault. She was just a silly goose who mistook her grander for a phoenix. But that would not be true to the brave, witty, imaginative, sensitive, playful, talented woman who wrote these letters. It is right that, after more than one hundred years, she should have her say -- John Carey * Sunday Times *In the letters, erotic energy occasionally seems to be pushing in all directions at once … She may have forfeited her chance to paint, but her letters, salvaged by her granddaughter Rebecca, after a century during which the renegade Ida was not mentioned in the family, make belated amends. Between baby-minding chores, she proved to be a witty, wickedly outspoken writer, which ensures that she will now not be forgotten -- Peter Conrad * Guardian *The letters of Ida Nettleship, first wife of arch-bohemian Augustus John, are a case in point: gathered together here from diverse sources by her granddaughter Rebecca John and expertly introduced by John’s biographer Michael Holroyd, they constitute a rare epistolary treasure trove … they give us a startlingly vivid picture of what it was like to be bound by passion, loyalty and an ever-growing brood of offspring to a ‘genius’ ... the fine balance between tragedy and comedy in her situation finds expression in letters so fresh that it is hard to believe they were written more than a century ago -- Ariane Banks * Spectator *Their sympathetic edition of her fascinating and painful letters reveals a courageous woman, gifted with a buoyant intelligence -- Dinah Birch * The Times *Rarely have I come across a more engaging personality -- D.J. Taylor * Times Literary Supplement 'Books of the Year' *A compelling glimpse of a lost age of bohemia that raises provocative questions about what it means to live freely -- Lara Feigel * Guardian *The letters, published here for the first time, go a long way to recovering [Ida] and tell a painful story of an emotionally sophisticated, morally honest woman struggling with the trap in which she finds herself, trying by turns to escape and take control of the situation. To different correspondents she showed different facets of her predicament and the result is a portrait both fragmentary and poignant -- Rosemary Hill * London Review of Books *The reader remains haunted by Ida’s story, but also left aware that letters offer something that the grand narrative of a good biography often sweeps over or ignores: small contingencies, sudden mood changes, or what falls between the cracks. Indeed the very human muddle that is found here -- Frances Spalding * Oldie *These letters should resurrect [Ida] as a wit and object of fascination in her own right * Daily Telegraph *

Book SynopsisThis is a irresistible and wonderfully illustrated exploration of the history of colour in art. The history of art is inseparable from the history of colour. And what a fascinating story they tell together: one that brims with an all-star cast of characters, eye-opening details, and unexpected detours through the annals of human civilization and scientific discovery. This book takes readers across the globe and over the centuries on an unforgettable tour through the brilliant history of color in art. Written for newcomers to the subject and aspiring young artists alike, Finlay's quest to uncover the origins and science of colour will beguile readers with its warm and conversational style. The rich narrative is illustrated in full colour throughout with 166 major works of art. Readers of this book will revel in a treasure trove of fun-filled facts and anecdotes. And were it not for the pigment cobalt blue, the halls of museums worldwide might still be filled with forged Vermeers.

Book SynopsisA SUNDAY TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR The ten years leading up to the First World War were the most exciting, frenzied and revolutionary in the history of art. They were the crucible of Modernism, when Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism and Abstract Art all burst forth. Simultaneously the Old Master market boomed, and art itself was politically weaponised in advance of approaching war. What was the conventional art against which Modernism was rebelling? Why did avant-garde artists become so obsessed with themselves? What persuaded a few bold collectors to buy difficult modern art? And why did others pay so much money for Old Masters? Book SynopsisThis richly illustrated book focuses on the extraordinary international networks resulting from the diaspora of more than 200,000 refugees who left France in the late 17th century to join communities already in exile spread far and wide. First-generation Huguenot refugees included hundreds of trained artists, designers, and craftsmen. Beyond the French borders, they raised the quality of design and workshop practice, passing on skills to their apprentices; sons, godsons, cousins, and to successive generations, who continued to dominate output in the luxury trades. Although silver and silks are the best-known fields with which Huguenot settlers are associated, their significant contribution to architecture, ceramics, design, clock and watchmaking, engraving, furniture, woodwork, sculpture, portraiture, and art education provides fascinating insight into the motivation and resolve of this highly skilled diaspora. The flat, emotionless almost automaton state of the mask and the artificial glossy hair topped even with a child''s bow, suggests that she, the monkey, might be a character from Japanese Noh theatre. But there''s no music. Instead Huyghe''s film evinces the terrifying possibility that our own, human, future might just be one of remnants and mimicry; that the deserted streets of Fukushima and the monkey''s recognizable, alienating chimeric performance is all that might survive us. Untitled (Human Mask) presents a pluperfect world with extinction the endgame for a civilization that cared little for the present, dreaming only of a future that inevitably and necessarily could not include it.

  • The Culture of Bronze: Making and Meaning in

V & A Publishing The Culture of Bronze: Making and Meaning in

Book SynopsisThe Italian Renaissance was a golden age for bronze sculpture, both on a grand scale-such as Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise, or Cellini's Perseus-and more intimate statuettes and small-scale functional objects. Bronze, being both costly and luxurious, embodied power, authority, and eternity and emulated the classical past. Yet it was one of the easiest materials to recycle, especially at a time when the need for artillery was ever-present. Drawing on the latest research, and including some 200 superb images, The Culture of Bronze explores the material and making of bronzes and the interrelationships and collaboration between sculptor, foundry, and owner. Encompassing works made for domestic, religious, and civic environments, the book studies the symbolism of bronze, and the bronzes themselves, within their broader societal context. Features works from sculptors including Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacoisi (Antico), Benvenuto Cellini, Donatello, Adriano Fiorentino, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Giambologna, Bertoldo di Giovanni, Leone Leoni, Barthelemy Prieur, Benedetto da Rovezzano, Adriaen de Vries and Agostino ZoppoTrade Review"Everything you need to know about Renaissance bronzes' might be an alternative title for this carefully cogitated and well-written volume." -- Charles Avery, Burlington Magazine, 162, February 2020Table of ContentsForeword -- Introduction -- Author's notes -- Map of Italy -- Chapter 1, The Metal and Its Magic -- Chapter 2, Modelling, Moulding and Manufacture -- Chapter 3, Forging Identity -- Chapter 4, Sculptors and Founders -- Chapter 5, The Small Bronze and Its Context -- Chapter 6, An International Taste -- Chapter 7, Connections and Conclusions -- Appendix -- Endnotes -- Bibliography -- Acknowledgements -- Picture credits -- Index

  • Holbein's Sir Thomas More

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisHans Holbein's famous portrayal of Sir Thomas More is one of the artist's greatest and most popular portraits. In the opening piece of this appealing new volume, "A Letter to Thomas More, Knight", award-winning author Hilary Mantel vividly imagines the background to the creation of this extraordinary portrait, giving it both historical perspective and immediacy. An insightful, concise, scholarly essay by Xavier Salomon grounds it in the art-historical world. Hans Holbein (1497/98-1543) painted Sir Thomas More in 1527, having been a guest in More's house when he first arrived in England. He brilliantly renders his sitter's rich fabrics and unshaven face with sympathy and perception. Frick Diptychs, a new series of small books to be co-published by GILES with The Frick Collection, New York, pairs masterworks from the Frick with critical and literary essays. The novelist Hilary Mantel will be followed by the filmmaker James Ivory on Vermeer's "Mistress and Maid" and the artist and author Edmund de Waal on a pair of porcelain and bronze candlesticks by the 18th-century French metalworker Pierre Gouthiere.Trade ReviewTasty Twosomes. The Frick Collection in association with the publishing house D Giles Ltd will be launching a series of books in April 2018 called Frick Diptychs. Each book will be a 56-page paperback that presents a single work from the collection accompanied by an essay by its curator and a reflection by a well-known contemporary writer. The first volume will present Hans Holbein's portrait of Sir Thomas More (1527), with an essay by Xavier Salomon, the Frick's chief curator, and an article by Hilary Mantel, the novelist whose books, Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, won the Booker Prize in 2009 and 2012 respectively. Future titles will include Johannes Vermeer's Mistress and Maid (1666-67) by the Frick's associate research curator Peggy Iacono in conjunction with James Ivory, the film director, writer and producer. • Paolo Veneziano's Coronation of the Virgin

D Giles Ltd Paolo Veneziano's Coronation of the Virgin

Book SynopsisAccording to Nico Muhly, the Coronation of the Virgin is "a panel of pure theatre and music". Painted in 1358 by the Venetian artist Paolo Veneziano (ca. 1295-1362), the apocryphal story of the Virgin's death is depicted in one of the artist's most thrilling and important works. Paolo Veneziano presents the Virgin and Christ in sumptuous garments and surrounded by a choir of angels playing portable organs, lutes, trumpets, tambourines, and other instruments. The angels symbolize the harmony of the universe; their instruments are the authentic components of a medieval orchestra, accurately depicted and correctly held and played. The decorative sparkle of the surface - with its brilliant, expensive colours, patterned textiles, and lavish gold leaf - reflects the Venetians' love of luxury, a taste that enriches much of 14th- and 15th-century architecture in Venice.Table of ContentsDirector's Foreword by Ian Wardropper; Acknowledgments; Contribution by Nico Muhly; Essay by Xavier F.
