Schiffer Publishing Ltd Brushes with War Paintings and Drawings by the

Book SynopsisBrushes With War is a unique history of World War I in broad brush strokes. Over 230 original paintings, drawings, sculpture, and trench art by the combatants of World War I cover all aspects of the war and most major battles from Mons (1914) to the Meuse-Argonne (1918). The artists were American, Austrian, Australian, Belgian, British, Canadian, French, German, and Russian soldiers. These were not professional artists, but amateurs depicting their own daily struggles as they saw them. Just as snapshot photos are often more realistic than posed professional portraits, these works of art are more genuine impressions of the war than the official art and illustrations of the time.

  • Magnificent 19th Century Furniture

Schiffer Publishing Ltd Magnificent 19th Century Furniture

Book SynopsisThe Historicism movement in art (1830-1920) was perhaps the most democratic of all. European furniture makers sought to recapture the magic and affluence displayed in early, highly stylized and aristocratic pieces of the Gothic, Rococo, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classicism periods--but at a fraction of the cost. These artists brought a great deal to their reproductions, applying a contemporary practicality that resulted in pieces of crafty pomp, opulence, and exaggerated beauty that were priced to reach the growing bourgeoisie. Historicism furniture pieces are not only art history documents of the most diverse cultures and styles of the 19th century, but they are also individual collector''s items, their value not determined by objectively derived pricing factors alone. To that end, this book enlists the help of an international jury of furniture experts, from renowned art auction houses and antique dealer companies and restorers, to appraise and price over 15,000 featured pieces. Historicism is directly related to the strengthened bourgeoisie, to wealth and the newly rich, as well as to the foundation of nations. With this social and economic background, the furniture of the 19th century can be better comprehended and appreciated.

  • 50 Landmark Cameras That Changed Photography

Schiffer Publishing Ltd 50 Landmark Cameras That Changed Photography

Book SynopsisThis lavishly illustrated book looks at the cameras that became landmarks and analyzes how and why they influenced future design.Trade ReviewThe chronological approach taken is both sensible and enjoyable, as it does give a flavour of how camera production and development occurred, incorporating changes in technology as it went. The text is both informed and informative, managing to give enough factual information that balances with Johns obvious enthusiasm and love for his subject(s). I love seeing cameras displayed with their occasionally mad accessories - cameras that I would not give houseroom to suddenly take on an allure (to me) when fully kitted out - you wonder what the design team from the American firm Univex were 'on' when they came up with some of the add ons for their already bonkers half frame camera the Mercury - the shot of this camera with i's Flash Gordon inspired lever wind, rangefinder and flash bulb unit is truly unforgettable. As with both of John's previous Schiffer titles (still available from the publisher) this is a wonderfully printed and illustrated book, and for me contains the essence of why I collect cameras and photographica - there's facts, anecdotes, a few mysteries and a decent serving of barminess... from the camera designers I mean, not from the author! - Timothy Campbell, 'Photographica World'

Book SynopsisThe follow-up to the hugely popular All the Buildings in New York, this is a charmingly illustrated journey through London, one building at a time. All the Buildings in London is a love letter to London, told through James Gulliver Hancock’s unique and charming drawings of the city’s diverse architectural styles and streetscapes. Book SynopsisAlthough Egypt fought to retain its independence, it succumbed at last under the conquests of Persia, Greece, and Rome.Trade ReviewA beautifully presented book which manages very successfully to encapsulate four thousand years of Egyptian history into two hundred and fifty four pages. So many histories of Egypt tend to briefly narrate the dynasties, picking out the highlights from particular reigns. This history however, flows smoothly from chapter to chapter under headings more appropriate to the chequered history of this great country. The maps presented at the commencement of each new section are particularly useful. The abscense of footnotes is a blessing, enabling one to read on without interruption. Beautifully coloured illustrations are chosen to complement the main content of the script and create an aura of Egypt which pervades every page of this book. This is a history which will stir the reader's imagination and leave a compulsive desire to delve more deeply into those areas suggested by the extensive reading list. • New York Modern The Arts and the City

Johns Hopkins University Press New York Modern The Arts and the City

Book SynopsisHandsomely illustrated and engagingly written, New York Modern documents the impressive collective legacy of New York's artists in capturing the energy and emotions of the urban experience.Trade ReviewThis history is as lively as its subject, clarifying the genealogy of the successive rebellions that marked the unfolding of modernism. It pays particular attention to the contributions of African Americans, helping us see, for example, the link between bebop and Abstract Expressionism. New Yorker New York Modern mirrors the bewildering welter of its subject-zigzagging through time to cover the evolution of different neighborhoods... expand[ing] our understanding of the city as the primary muse, site, and subject of 20th-century creative activity. The authors make this argument convincingly, through an accretion of innumerable details. -- Leslie Camhi VLS This is a wonderful survey of the artistic life of a great and complex city. It is like a panorama, a sweeping history of a century of artistic production, of cultural pretension and achievement. -- Serge Guilbaut Journal of American History Scott and Rutkoff explore the energy and vitality of the city from Greenwich Village to Harlem as a supportive (and destructive) environment for the arts. Like a nonfiction Ragtime, the book presents a cast of characters that is remarkable, from Robert Henri and his school of art at the beginning of the century through Steiglitz and O'Keefe to the happenings of Cunningham and Cage in the 1960s. While solidly based in scholarship, the lively, well-organized prose provides enough colorful detail to keep the pages turning. Library Journal (starred review) Scott and Rutkoff... distill an enormous range of scholarly work... The authors' clear vision of New York as the center of a plurality of modern arts, particularly after WWII, is bolstered by their minute attention to the social structures and political ideals that undergirded the polis and supported the artistic community. They are particularly astute in their scathing indictment of 1950 and '60s urban renewal, and in their documentation of Harlem's central role in all the arts. Publishers Weekly A demanding, spirited study of New York's engagement with Modernism... All students of New York City's artistic achievements will have to start with this book. -- Joel Schwartz New York History In their exceptionally well-researched study, William Scott and Peter Rutkoff explore the centrality of New York City in the development of a vibrant, modern American culture... Their's is a rich and satisfying chronicle of the seemingly impossible, a thorough account of New York cultural life between 1876 and 1976... Scott and Rutkoff capture the vitality of the city as well as the individuals and institutions that made possible a modern, democratic American culture by focusing on the multiple roles that New York City played in the lives of the artists and institutions they investigate. -- A.
