  • Cambridge University Press Homer and the Artists Text and Picture in Early Greek Art

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a book about Homer, myth and art. The Iliad and Odyssey so dominate our view of ancient Greece that our natural reaction on viewing certain works of early Greek art is to identify them as 'scenes from Homer'. However, Anthony Snodgrass argues that, so far from 'illustrating' the Homeric poems, these works very rarely show signs of acquaintance with the Iliad or Odyssey, seldom even choosing their subject-matter from them. When the subjects do overlap, the artists occasionally give positive signs of preferring a non-Homeric version of the episode. He then attempts to explain why this should be so: despite Homer's unique standing in antiquity, the artists inhabited an independent world, where their own inspirations and concerns dominated their production. It is only the traditional dominance of the literary study of antiquity which has hidden this from us.Trade Review'Snodgrass's bid for the independence and artistic quality of the Geometric painter is closely argued and outlined with a scholarly eye for detail and a characteristic clarity of expression which makes it comprehensible to expert and non-expert alike … undoubtedly a radical reinterpretation, he has valuably opened up the discussion of this difficult but vital period in Greek art.' Art HistoryTable of Contents1. The prestige of Homer; 2. Learning to read in the dark; 3. The Geometric artist reassessed; 4. Beyond the Geometric; 5. The inscribed image; 6. The burden of proof; 7. The question of composition in art and in literature; Epilogue.

  • Cambridge University Press The Parthenon Frieze

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Parthenon frieze, one of Western civilization's major monuments, has been the subject of intense study for over two hundred years. Most scholarship has sought an overall interpretation of the monument's iconography and therefore neglects the visual language of the sculpture, an essential tool for a full understanding of the narrative. Dr Jenifer Neils's study provides an in-depth examination of the frieze which decodes its visual language, but also analyzes its conception and design, style and content, and impact on the visual arts over time. Unique in its wide-ranging approach, The Parthenon Frieze also brings ethical reasoning to bear on the issue of repatriation as part of the ongoing debate on the Elgin Marbles.Trade Review'… a valuable book that will appeal to specialists and non-specialists alike … The Parthenon Frieze will certainly find a place in many libraries, both institutional and personal, and it establishes high standards for other scholars aspiring to reexamine a significant monument of classical art.' The Classical JournalTable of ContentsPreface; Introduction; Polis: the context of ritual; Paradeigma: designing the frieze; Techne: carving the frieze; Mimesis: the high classical style; Iconographia: identifying the players; Iconologia: interpreting the frieze; Kleos: the impact of the frieze; Thauma: whose heritage?

Accessibly written and generously illustrated, this textbook develops the skills students need in order to describe, analyse and contextualise images and objects.Trade Review'Few scholars can match Jordanova's ability to further historical practice through precise analysis, originality and thought-provoking questions, and this pioneering publication is a 'how-to' book in the best possible sense. Beautifully illustrated and offering carefully selected bibliographical advice, The Look of the Past significantly enriches the historians' toolbox and throws out rusty remains. A winner!' • Cambridge University Press beyondaesthetics

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBeyond Aesthetics brings together philosophical essays addressing art and related issues by one of the foremost philosophers of art at work today. Countering conventional aesthetic theories - those maintaining that authorial intention, art history, morality and emotional responses are irrelevant to the experience of art - NoÃl Carroll argues for a more pluralistic and commonsensical view in which all of these factors can play a legitimate role in our encounter with art works. Throughout, the book combines philosophical theorizing with illustrative examples including works of high culture and the avant-garde, as well as works of popular culture, jokes, horror novels, and suspense films.Trade Review"Beyond Aesthetics is but the latest in a series of important works in which Carroll undertakes to expose the shortcomings of traditional and conventional modes of interpretation and appreciation."
