Cambridge University Press English Medieval Graffiti
Book SynopsisGraffiti ('drawings or writings scratched on a wall or other surface') are to be found incised on the walls and pillars of innumerable cathedrals and churches in Great Britain. Most were done between the twelfth and early fifteenth centuries; many are valuable as examples of medieval art; and some are important for their preservation of particular styles of epigraphy. In this work, Mrs Pritchard has studied the inscriptions and drawings in a large number of churches, mostly within a radius of sixty miles of Cambridge. These graffiti are far from mere scratchings performed by unskilled hands; they are highly imaginative, boldly executed drawings, combining freedom of line with occasional fussiness of detail, and inscriptions whose clarity and precision of lettering equal in execution the contemporary manuscript. Many were subsequently covered by medieval wall paintings; others have been partly defaced by cleaning and restoration of the original stone. Mrs Pritchard illuminates a neglectTable of ContentsIntroduction; Descriptions of individual graffiti; Conclusion; Appendices; Select bibliography; Index.

Jewish Culture and History'Thanks to Sirat's profound erudition and rich experience in dealing with Hebrew manuscripts, her new book offers a treasury of information … this comprehensive introduction and useful manual is highly recommended.' European Association for Jewish Studies'… an authoritative introduction … we are constantly reminded throughout this book of the many common characteristics shared by Hebrew book production and those of the surrounding culture, be this Muslim or Christian European. Cambridge University Press Modern Art and the Grotesque
Book SynopsisThis volume examines how the grotesque has shaped the history, practice, and theory of art in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The grotesque entered into the mainstream of modern expression during the romantic era. It has been adopted by a succession of artists as a way to push beyond established boundaries, to explore alternate modes of experience and expression, and to challenge the status quo. Examining specific images by a range of artists, such as Ingres, Gauguin, HÃch, de Kooning, Polke, and Mona Hatoum, the essays also encompass a variety of media, including medical illustration, paintings, prints, photography, multimedia installations, and film. This study brings into focus a range of subjects, styles and theoretical viewpoints that have traditionally been marginalized in the standard narratives on modernism. It demonstrates how the grotesque in modern art directly ties into current debates regarding the representation of race and gender, abjection and the other, globaliTable of ContentsList of figures; Contributors; Preface; 1.
