Museum Tusculanum Press Nordic Orientalism
Book SynopsisThis book explores the appropriation of Oriental imagery within Danish and Norwegian 19th century nation-building. The project queries Edward Said's binary notion of Orientalism and posits a more complex model describing how European counties on the periphery -- Denmark and Norway -- imported oriental imagery from France to position themselves, not against their colonial Other, but in relation to central European nations. Examining Nordic Orientalism across a century in the context of modernisation, urbanisation and democratisation the study furthermore shows how the Romanticists' naive treatment of the Orient was challenged by increased contact with the 'real' Orient.

Museum Tusculanum Press Abildgaard - 2-Volume Set: Kunstneren mellem
Book SynopsisThis book is the first complete study of the painter Nicolai Abildgaard's oeuvre. Abildgaard (1743-1809) is the only Danish artist of the 18th century to obtain a position in the European art history of the period. His works range from the Pre-Romantic sublime to Enlightenment history painting, anonymous satire and Neo-Classical allegory. 1789 radicalised his views and estranged him from his royal patrons. The imagery of his final, isolated years playfully evokes an erotic Neo-Classical Arcadia. Among his friends were the Swedish sculptor Tobias Sergel and the German sculptor Gottfried Schadow; and among his pupils were Asmus Carstens, Caspar David Friedrich, Phillipp Otto Runge and Bertel Thorvaldsen.

Book SynopsisEliseo Mattiacci (Cagli, 1940) is considered a leading figure in modern and contemporary Italian art. He is a widely exhibited sculptor known as an early proponent of Arte Povera and a pioneer of the late-Sixties avant-garde. His work revolves around ideas of the spatial and conceptual relationships between art and nature, and between man and the environment. The catalogue features numerous critical essays and extensive on-site photographs of the installation.Table of ContentsContents: Critical anthology selected by Studio Mattiacci; photographs of the exposition.

Blacksmith Books Paper Horses: Traditional Woodblock Prints of
Book SynopsisIn 2020 a large album of paper horses prayer prints of Chinese gods appeared for sale. How had these fragile things, cheaply printed in the 1940s and meant to be ritually burned soon after purchase, survived intact for so long? And how come there were at least three other identical sets in collections around the world? In answering this mystery, author David Leffman explores the history and techniques behind traditional Chinese woodblock printing, which dates back to at least the Tang dynasty (618-907). All 93 paper horses in the original album are reproduced alongside biographies of the gods, spirits and demons depicted, providing an illustrated introduction to the complex and fascinating world of Chinese folk religion.
