  • The Architectural Association in the Postwar

Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd The Architectural Association in the Postwar

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the period following the Second World War, the Architectural Association (AA) became the only British school of architecture of truly global renown. It was one of only two schools in the world which fully embraced and promoted the pedagogical ideals put forward by CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne) — the other being Walter Gropius’s Harvard Graduate School of Design — and emerged as an admired example for architectural education in other countries. Many of the most famous British architects and critics of the past 60 years attended the AA, including Ahrends, Burton + Koralek, Alan Colquhoun and John Miller, Jeremy Dixon and Edward Jones, Frank Duffy, Eldred Evans, Kenneth Frampton, Bill Howell, John Killick, Robert Maguire, Cedric Price, Graeme Shankland and Oliver Cox, Quinlan Terry, John Voelcker, and almost a dozen recipients of the RIBA Gold Medal, viz. Neave Brown, Peter Cook, Edward Cullinan, Philip Dowson, Nicholas Grimshaw, Michael and Patricia Hopkins, Powell + Moya, Richard Rogers, and Joseph Rykvert. The book traces the history of the school from the end of the war until the mid-1960s, when it surrendered its position as the pacemaker in British architectural education in order to safeguard its institutional independence. Alvin Boyarsky, who became chairman in 1971, remodelled the AA as a postmodern, ‘internationalist’ school and detached it from its modernist, British origins. In keeping with this (and partly as a result of it), there has been no research into the AA’s postwar history, which remains dominated by myths and half-truths. The book replaces these myths with an in-depth account of what really happened.Trade Review'The book constitutes a sound and always readable institutional history of the post-war AA and will serve as a reference point for some considerable time to come' – Architectural History Table of ContentsPrologue: A Brief history of the Architectural Association; Chapter 1. Book SynopsisBrutalism East: majestic concrete meets ornament and color in the revelatory world of Soviet Asian architectureSoviet Asia explores the Soviet modernist architecture of Central Asia. Italian photographers Roberto Conte and Stefano Perego crossed the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, documenting buildings constructed from the 1950s until the fall of the USSR.The resulting images showcase the majestic, largely unknown, modernist buildings of the region. Museums, housing complexes, universities, circuses, ritual palaces?all were constructed using a composite aesthetic. Influenced by Persian and Islamic architecture, pattern and mosaic motifs articulated a connection with Central Asia. Gray concrete slabs were juxtaposed with colourful tiling and rectilinear shapes broken by ornate curved forms: the brutal designs normally associated with Soviet-era architecture were reconstructed with Eastern characteristics. Many of the buildings shown in Soviet Asia are recorded here for the first time, making this book an important document, as, despite the recent revival of interest in Brutalist and modernist architecture, a number of them remain under threat of demolition. The publication includes two contextual essays by Alessandro De Magistris and Marco Buttino.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDistinguished by their lavish sculpture, metalwork or tile facades, Art Nouveau buildings certainly stand out. Art Nouveau buildings are unique, audacious and inspirational. Rejecting historic styles, considered inappropriate for an era driven by progress, architects and designers sought a new vocabulary of architectural forms. Their vision was shaped by modern materials and innovative technologies, including iron, glass and ceramics. A truly democratic style, Art Nouveau transformed life on the eve of the twentieth century and still captivates our imaginations today. Beautifully illustrated, this book explains how the new style came into being, its rationale and why it is known by so many different names: French Art Nouveau, German Jugendstil, Viennese Secession, Catalan Modernisme, Italian Liberty and Portuguese Arte Nova. It covers the key architects and designers associated with the style; Victor Horta in Brussels, Hector Guimard in Paris, Antoni Gaudi on Barcelona, Otto Wagner in Vienna, Odon Lechner in Budapest and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Glasgow. There are detailed descriptions and stunning photographs of buildings to be found in Brussels, Paris, Nancy, Darmstadt, Vienna, Budapest, Barcelona, Milan, Turin and Aveiro. Finally, it covers the decorative arts, stained glass, tiles and metalwork that make Art Nouveau buildings so distinctive.

Book SynopsisProfessor Hillenbrand has written extensively over the last twenty-five years on Islamic architecture from Spain to India and from the seventh to the twentieth century. He has paid consistent attention to the architecture of Iran, focusing particularly on the Saljuq period (11th-12th centuries), but has also worked on Umayyad monuments in the Levant between 660 and 750 A.D., a period when Islamic architecture came of age. Apart from recording unfamiliar buildings, he has increasingly concerned himself with the iconographic significance of Muslim buildings The papers in these two volumes closely reflect these interests. Some present primary material, others attempt to explore the achievements of a specific period or dynasty while yet others analyse the religious, royal, or political context of an important monument or school of architecture. The opportunity has been taken to add illustrations to articles, and to provide additional notes and a comprehensive index.Table of ContentsSafavid Architecture The Islamic Architecture of Persia Islamic Monuments in Northern Iran Mosques and Mausolea in Khurasan and Central Iran Saljuq Monuments in Iran I Saljuq Monuments in Iran II. Trade Review"This is a truly magnificent book. The wonderful text tells the story of the architects, owners and occupants, restoration, adaptation and change. And the photographs are exceptional." - Good Book Guide "A treasure ... Best of all are the authors personal asides on builders and those who inspired them" - Economist "Stourton writes elegantly and absorbingly about both architects and owners" - Marcus Binney, The Times "The deft weaving of architectural, social and contemporary history will reveal unexpected pleasures" - Art Quarterly "Writing in a deceptively simple style, Stourton concentrates on architects and artists, on awners and occupants. Idiosyncratic and amusing, he makes you see everything in a new light." - The Tablet "This magnificent book, with illustrations of breathtaking beauty specially taken by Fritz von der Schulenburg, is the fullest account ever written of its absorbing subject. It will come as a revelation, even to those who think they are familiar with London . . . The book is . . . not only about architecture, but about people, whose social, artistic and political ambitions, and manner of living, are vividly brought to life . . . We are familiar with the depressing list of great houses demolished in the 20th century, from Devonshire House to Londonderry House, but this book can surely cheer us up during the recession with its visions of surviving splendour." - David Watkin, Country Life “This sumptuously illustrated volume...extends its reach both sociologically and chronologically... Book SynopsisZaha Hadid (1950 - 2016) was a revolutionary architect. For years, she was widely acclaimed and won numerous prizes despite building practically nothing. Some even said her work was simply impossible to build. Yet, during the latter years of her life, Hadid’s daring visions became a reality, bringing a new and unique architectural language to cities and structures such as the Port House in Antwerp, the Al Janoub Stadium near Doha, Qatar, and the spectacular new airport terminal in Beijing. By her untimely death in 2016, Hadid was firmly established among architecture’s finest elite, working on projects in Europe, China, the Middle East, and the United States. She was the first female architect to win both the Pritzker Prize for architecture and the prestigious RIBA Royal Gold Medal, with her long-time Partner Patrik Schumacher now the leader of Zaha Hadid Architects and in charge of many new projects. Based on the massive TASCHEN monograph, this book is now available in an extensively updated and accessible edition covering Hadid’s complete works, including ongoing projects. With abundant photographs, in-depth sketches, and Hadid’s own drawings, the volume traces the evolution of her career, spanning not only her most pioneering buildings but also the furniture and interior designs that were integrated into her unique, and distinctly 21st-century, universe.Trade Review“Visually phenomenal and fantastically realized.” * Der Standard *“Zaha Hadid’s work is a revolution. Book SynopsisTrade Review"Winner of the 2011 Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy Book Prize, Association for Asian Studies, South Asia Council""One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2009""This brilliant book does many things well, but two stand out. It is an overview of the art, especially architecture and architectural decoration, of what is now northern India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan from the eighth to the thirteenth centuries--from the arrival of Islam to the eve of the Mongol conquests. It is also a trenchant essay of interpretation, substituting a richly textured consideration of cultural dynamics and cultural change on a theoretical level for the traditional dichotomy of Hindu versus Muslim. . . . Nothing is comparable to this deeply learned, engrossing, and well-written albeit often challenging work, which is full of compelling discussions of important monuments. It deserves a wide readership."---L. Nees, Choice"[A] brilliant, far-ranging study. . . . This book is essential reading for anyone who seeks to understand the medieval 'Hindu-Muslim' encounter."---John E. Cort, Religious Studies Review"Flood's is an outstanding book and its level of scholarship is far in excess of any other work on medieval Indian history that I am aware of. It is a book that gladdens one's heart as much as it enriches one's mind."---Harbans Mukhia, Medieval History Journal"This book will not only be of interest to scholars of material culture, art and architectural history, religion, and medieval history, but is also entirely relevant to scholars of modern South Asia. In its insistence on mobility--of objects, people, and ideas--and resistance to boundaries, Flood's book is a timely reminder that global mobility is hardly a new phenomenon."---Preeti Chopra, Contemporary South Asia"This book is a most welcomed addition to the still meager though growing number of studies in Islamic art and material culture, which are based on theoretical premises and on a close, comparative scrutiny of multiple visual objects and texts. . . . [D]ue to its rich material and novel ideas, this book is a necessary asset in the library of historians and art historians of the Muslim world and India, and a useful text-book in academic teaching, hard to read but fully rewarding."---Rachel Milstein, Jerusalem Studies in Arabic and Islam

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis beautifully illustrated book showcases the Hindu and Jain temples of Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka built prior to the invasion of peninsular India by the Delhi sultans at the end of the 13th century. Unlike temples in many other parts of India, those of the Deccan are well preserved, with their wealth of figural and decorative carvings miraculously intact. They demonstrate the development of Indian sacred architecture and art over a span of more than 600 years. Focusing on some 50 historical sites, the Temples of Deccan India begins with artificially excavated “cave” shrines dedicated to various Hindu deities, before proceeding on to examine free-standing Hindu and Jain monuments sponsored by successive rulers of the Deccan. Attention is paid to the beautiful sculptures found on temple basements, walls, brackets and ceilings. Carved in crisp relief, and sometimes even in three dimensions, these carvings are among the greatest glories of Indian stone art. Among the featured highlights are the cave temple on the island of Elephanta, with its stupendous representation of three-headed Sadashiva; the colossal, monolithic Kailasa temple at Ellora, a technical feat unsurpassed in the entire history of Indian architecture; the magnificent columned pavilion at Hanamkonda, now currently being reconstructed; and the temple at Belur, with its exquisitely carved female figural brackets. Specially commissioned plans of temple layouts accompany 300+ photographs. and clarify the succession of dynasties that governed the Deccan during the centuries covered here. Maps locate the temple sites, while passages of text illuminate the succession of dynasties that governed the Deccan from the 7th to 13th centuries. Educational, accessible and beautifully illustrated, this book will be of interest to anyone fascinated by Indian architecture.

  • Gaudí. The Complete Works

Taschen GmbH Gaudí. The Complete Works

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe life of Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) was full of complexity and contradictions. As a young man he joined the Catalonian nationalist movement and was critical of the church; toward the end of his life he devoted himself completely to the construction of one single spectacular church, La Sagrada Familia. In his youth, he courted a glamorous social life and the demeanor of a dandy. By the time of his death in a tram accident on the streets of Barcelona his clothes were so shabby passersby assumed he was a beggar. Gaudí’s incomparable architecture channels much of this multifaceted intricacy. From the shimmering textures and skeletal forms of Casa Batlló to the Hispano-Arabic matrix of Casa Vicens, his work merged the influences of Orientalism, natural forms, new materials, and religious faith into a unique Modernista aesthetic. Today, his unique aesthetic enjoys global popularity and acclaim. His magnum opus, the Sagrada Familia, is the most-visited monument in Spain, and seven of his works are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Through brand-new photography, plans and drawings by Gaudí himself, historical photos, as well as an appendix detailing all his works—from buildings to furniture, decor to unfinished projects—this book presents Gaudí’s universe like never before. Like a personal tour through Barcelona, we discover how the “Dante of architecture” was a builder in the truest sense of the word, crafting extraordinary constructions out of minute and mesmerizing details, and transforming fantastical visions into realities on the city streets.Trade Review“A personal tour through the shimmering streets of Barcelona.” * independent.co.uk *“This book shows us the Catalan architect’s universe as never before.” * El País *“There is probably no better way to enter the mind of Gaudí than through this book.” * eldiario.es *“From Barcelona to beyond, TASCHEN’s Gaudí. His influence on postwar architecture is undisputed, the sunny climate and rich landscape being particularly suited to his cool, sleek modern style. Neutra had a keen appreciation for the relationship between people and nature; his trademark plate glass walls and ceilings which turn into deep overhangs have the effect of connecting the indoors with the outdoors. His ability to incorporate technology, aesthetics, science, and nature into his designs brought him to the forefront of Modernist architecture. In this volume, all of Neutra’s works (nearly 300 private homes, schools, and public buildings) are gathered together, illustrated by over 1,000 photographs, including those of Julius Shulman and other prominent photographers.Trade Review“…the definitive volume on the Viennese-born architect.” * Los Angeles Times *

Book SynopsisThe housing projects built in Camden in the 1960s and 1970s when Sydney Cook was borough architect are widely regarded as the most important urban housing built in the UK in the past 100 years. Cook recruited some of the brightest talent available in London at the time and the schemes - which included Alexandra Road, Branch Hill, Fleet Road, Highgate New Town and Maiden Lane - set out a model of housing that continues to command interest and admiration from architects to this day. The Camden projects represented a new type of urban housing based on a return to streets with front doors. In place of tower blocks, the Camden architects showed how the required densities could be achieved without building high, creating a new kind of urbanism that integrated with, rather than broke from, its cultural and physical context. This book examines how Cook and his team created this new kind of housing, what it comprised, and what lessons it offers for today. New colour photographs combine with original black and white photography to give a fascinating 'then and now' portrayal not just of the buildings but also of the homes within and the people who live there.Trade Review'Superb' -- Edwin Heathcote * Financial Times * 'Definitive' -- Douglas Murphy * Architecture Today * 'Groundbreaking...a landmark work' -- Dr Alistair Fair * Planning Perspectives *Table of ContentsForeword; Preface; Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: Sydney Cook at Camden: geared to producing ideas, with the emphasis on youth; Chapter 3: Developing a new format for urban housing: Neave Brown and Fleet Road; Chapter 4: Creating a piece of city: Neave Brown at Alexandra Road; Chapter 5: A city on a hill: Peter Tabori at Highgate New Town; Chapter 6: Class war in Hampstead: the battle of Branch Hill; Chapter 7: The poetics of housing: Benson and Forsyth at Branch Hill; Chapter 8: Gospel Oak: from Powell & Moya to Benson and Forsyth; Chapter 9: Only connect: Benson and Forsyth at Maiden Lane; Chapter 10: Urban dentistry: Edward Cullinan and Colquhoun & Miller; Chapter 11: Politics versus architecture: the Alexandra Road public enquiry of 1978-81; Chapter 12: Conclusion: Cook's Camden today; Appendix 1: `Sydney Cook as I knew him': recollections by Neave Brown, Frank Dobson, John Green, Martin Morton and Peter Tabori; Appendix 2: Neave Brown, 'The form of housing' (1967); Appendix 3: Cook's Camden A-Z; Cook's Camden Map; Abbreviations; Notes; Index

He has published numerous essays in journals such The Journal of Architecture, AD, AA Files, New Geographies, Volume and Praznine. He teaches at the AA's Graduate School of Design at the Architectural Association and at the University of Westminster, London.Trade ReviewSpencer draws a direct intellectual lineage from neoliberalism’s original thinkers through the unlikely corridors of late-20th-century countercultural and avant-garde thought, all the way into the glistening hallways of today’s most acclaimed contemporary architectural firms. * Los Angeles Review of Books *This book marks a milestone in architectural criticism, and the questions it addresses could not be more important or urgent ... Its bold, unflinching description of architecture’s complicity with the powers that be makes it an indispensable reference for all those concerned with the social and political meaning of their work, * Journal of Architectural Education *The Architecture of Neoliberalism is a devastating portrait of contemporary architecture as the phantasmagoria of neoliberal capitalism. Spencer deftly deconstructs the current architectural ideology as a melange of counter-cultural tropes and vitalist celebrations of flexibility, empowerment, spontaneity, and the market as the final arbiter of freedom. The result is a powerful plea for critique in the face of the architectural prophets who proclaim ‘there is no alternative’. * Benjamin Noys, Professor of Critical Theory, University of Chichester, UK *“Neoliberalism” is commonly used as an epithet today to denounce a late-capitalist architecture in cahoots with the forces of real estate development and the marketplace. Douglas Spencer is the first to provide a detailed history of this term and to analyze its modes of operation, its architectural expressions, and its ideological subterfuges. Book SynopsisFallingwater Rising is a biography not of a person but of the most famous house of the twentieth century. Scholars and the public have long extolled the house that Frank Lloyd Wright perched over a Pennsylvania waterfall in 1937, but the full story has never been told. When he got the commission to design the house, Wright was nearing seventy, his youth and his early fame long gone. It was the Depression, and Wright had no work in sight. Into his orbit stepped Edgar J. Kaufmann, a Pittsburgh department-store mogul-“the smartest retailer in America”-and a philanthropist with the burning ambition to build a world-famous work of architecture. It was an unlikely collaboration: the Jewish merchant who had little concern for modern architecture and the brilliant modernist who was leery of Jews. But the two men collaborated to produce an extraordinary building of lasting architectural significance that brought international fame to them both and confirmed WrightR

Book SynopsisThe founder of the blog A Daily Dose of Architecture, John Hill, is obsessed with his subject and determined to expose his fellow citizens to the glorious structures that shape our environment. In this beautifully designed compendium Hill presents his selection of the most significant building to be built each year from 1916 to 2015. Each two-page spread includes one or two large color photos and text that explains the importance of each structure. Starting with H. P. Berlage's Holland House in London and closing with Diller Scofidio + Renfro's newly completed Broad museum in Los Angeles, Hill has combed the globe for iconic buildings. Notable inclusions are Helsinki Railroad Station; the Solimar Building in Cuba; Le Corbusier's Mill Owners' Association building in Ahmadabad, India; Habitat 67, a housing complex in Montreal; and Tadao Ando's Church of the Light in Osaka, Japan. What makes this collection so extraordinary is Hill's criteria for the buildings included: each must be able to be seen, approached, or explored by the average person. An introductory essay and a timeline that highlights important architectural events round out this engrossing survey that demonstrates the underlying themes and developments in the world of architecture today.Trade Review"Architecture expert John Hill s comprehensive new book 100 Years 100 Buildings highlights an important structure from each of the past hundred years. . . . High-profile highlights from around the globe include Le Corbusier s Villa Savoye (1931), Frank Lloyd Wright s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1959), and Jorn Utzon's Sydney Opera House (1973), while lesser-known works are sprinkled throughout." -Architectural Digest "Hill combed the world seeking out its iconic buildings. The result is a book that s a finely designed compendium where he presents his personal selection of the most significant building from 1916 to 2015. And it s not just about residences there are churches, office buildings and museums too. Hill required that it be a building that s still standing, and one that anyone could go and see in person . . . It s a journey worth taking in person or in print." -Architects and Artisans "In this anthology, John Hill presents a century of buildings. Adhering to a single yearly entry starting in 1916, Hill is able to intersperse big names with lesser-known players and abstain from focusing on architecture s most iconic and thus frequently referenced periods. While he admits the range betrays his own Western perspective, the unique format draws out lessons in style, shifting priorities, and the ways in which global events are reflected in man-made places." -Metropolis magazine By cutting himself free of the artificial constraint of highlighting the 20th century alone, architect John Hill brings his survey of remarkable buildings up to the present...Hill's approach forces a greater diversity than you'll find in most guides to architecture's greatest hits... It might even inspire building-gawkers to book a trip or two. -The Tangential

Book SynopsisThe Chicago lakefront is one of America's urban wonders. The ribbon of high rise luxury apartment buildings along the Lake Michigan shore has few, if any, rivals nationwide for sustained architectural significance. This historic confluence of site, money, style, and development lies at the heart of the updated edition of Neil Harris's Chicago Apartments: A Century and Beyond of Lakefront Luxury. The book features more than 100 buildings, stretching from south to north and across more than a century, each with its own special combination of design choice, floor plans, and background story. Harris, with the assistance of Teri J. Edelstein, proves to be an affable and knowledgeable tour guide, guiding us through dozens of buildings, detailing a host of inimitable development histories, design choices, floor plans, and more along the way. Of particular note are recent structures on the Chicago River and south of the Loop that are proposing new definitions of comfort and extravagance. FeatuTrade Review"Chicago Apartments is that sort of book—the sort that invites the reader (and the author) to gush over favorites. . . . This is a book rich in a part of Chicago history and living that rarely gets much attention." * Third Coast Review *"When I think of lakefront luxury living in Chicago, a roughly one-mile, zigzag stretch of Lake Shore Drive, from East Pearson Street on the south to North Avenue on the north, comes to mind. . . . When I lived in Chicago and often rode my bike along the lakefront, it was hard to not think what it was like to live inside one of those apartment buildings. The second edition of Chicago Apartments does just that." -- John Hill * A Daily Dose of Architecture Books *"This excellent book on Chicago apartment buildings has superb black-and-white photographs of almost 100 distinctive buildings, many with pictures of some of their spectacular interiors." * The City Review *Table of ContentsForeword, by Sara ParetskyChicago’s Luxury ApartmentsA Note to the ReaderSouth Shore 6700 South Crandon Avenue 6901 South Oglesby Avenue 2666 East 73rd Street | THE COASTLAND 7000 South Shore Drive 7321 South Shore Drive | WINDSOR BEACH APARTMENTS Hyde Park–Kenwood 5000 South Cornell Avenue 5421 South Cornell Avenue 5801–11 South Dorchester Avenue | THE CLOISTERS 5000 South East End Avenue 5555 South Everett Avenue | JACKSON TOWERS 1640 East 50th Street | NARRAGANSETT APARTMENTS 1648 East 50th Street / 4950 South Chicago Beach Drive | THE POWHATAN 1644 East 56th Street | THE WINDERMERE 5454 South Shore Drive | SHORELAND HOTEL 5490 South Shore Drive | JACKSON SHORE APARTMENTS 5530–32 South Shore Drive | PROMONTORY APARTMENTS 5830–44 South Stony Island Avenue | VISTA HOMESGreater Loop 225 North Columbus Drive | AQUA TOWER 451 East Grand Avenue | ONE BENNETT PARK 1200 South Indiana Avenue | NEMA CHICAGO 400 North Lake Shore Drive | THE SPIRE 505 North Lake Shore Drive | LAKE POINT TOWER 60 East Monroe Street | THE LEGACY 1211 South Prairie Avenue | ONE MUSEUM PARK EAST 400 East Randolph Street | OUTER DRIVE EAST 300 North State Street | MARINA CITY 401 North Wabash Avenue | TRUMP TOWER 403 North Wabash Avenue | RENELLE ON THE RIVER 363 East Wacker Drive | VISTA TOWER RESIDENCESNear North Side 1200 North Astor Street | MCONNELL APARTMENTS 1209 North Astor Street 1260 North Astor Street 1301 North Astor Street 1325 North Astor Street 20 East Cedar Street | BRADLEY APARTMENTS 70 East Cedar Street 40–50 East Chicago Avenue | HOTEL ST.
