Taylor & Francis Ltd Marie Laurencin Une femme inadapte in Feminist
Book SynopsisMarie Laurencin, in spite of the noticeable reputation she made in Paris in the first half of the twentieth century, has attracted only sporadic attention by late-twentieth century art historians. Until now the substance of her art and the feminist issues that were entangled in her life have been narrowly examined or reduced by an author's chosen theoretical format; and the terms of her lesbian identity have been overlooked. In this case study of une femme inadaptÃe and an unfit feminist, Elizabeth Kahn re-situates Laurencin in the on-going feminist debates that enrich the disciplines of art history, women's studies and literary criticism. Kahn's thorough reading of the artist's visual and literary production ensures a comprehensive overview which addresses notable works and passages but also integrates those that are less well known. Incorporating feminist theory and building on the work of contemporary feminist art historians, she avoids the heroics of conventional biography, instead allowing her subject to participate in the historical collective of women's work. Provocative and engagingly written, this fresh new study of Marie Laurencin's life and works also explores the multiple valences by which to connect the histories of, and find new connections between, women artists across the twentieth century.Trade Review'Elizabeth Kahn's impressive and timely study rescues Marie Laurencin from the margins of modern art. She emerges here not just as the mysterious and beguiling woman who inspired the poet Guillaume Apollinaire and painted the members of Picasso's cubist circle, but as a complex, multifaceted pioneer: in her painting, her writing, and her radical sexuality.' Taylor & Francis Ltd A New World of Animals Early Modern Europeans on
Book SynopsisMany Early Modern Europeans who during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries travelled to the New World left written or pictorial records of their encounters with a surprising fauna. The story told in this book is woven out of the threads of those texts and pictures. A New World of Animals shows how the initial wonder at the new beasts gave way to a more utilitarian approach, assessing their economic and medical potential. It elucidates how shifts in European perceptions brought the animals from the realm of the fantastic into the mainstream of early modern natural history, while at the same time changing the way in which Europeans saw their own world. Indeed, the chronicles and treatises of those who in the wake of the discovery arrived in the new lands tell as much about the particular interests and mental worlds of the writers as about the ''new animals''. This book traces the amazement of the first explorers and colonizers, the chronicles of soldiers and Indians, the ''natural Trade Review'This is a thorough, encyclopedic study of dozens of authors who are appropriately and lovingly located in their historical, intellectual, and cultural contexts. It deserve wide readership.' Journal of the History of Biology 'This study is engaging, informative, and offers a nuanced contextualization of the transmission of knowledge about Iberian America to contemporary Europeans... It is a well-researched and well-organized study with a plethora of interesting vignettes...Anyone interested in the history of exploration, sciences, and ideas in the early modern period will want to read this book.’ Sixteenth Century Journal ’...carefully researched, clearly written, and includes a valuable primary source bibliography of many of the most important early modern European texts dealing with Iberian American nature...
