Book SynopsisThe Routledge Companion to Seventeenth Century Philosophy is an outstanding survey of one of the most important eras in the history of Western philosophy - one which witnessed philosophical, scientific, religious and social change on a massive scale.A team of twenty international contributors provide students and scholars of philosophy and related disciplines with a detailed and accessible guide to seventeenth century philosophy. The Companion is divided into seven parts: Historical Context Metaphysics Epistemology Mind and Language Moral and Political Philosophy Natural Philosophy and the Material World Philosophical Theology. Major topics and themes are explored and discussed, including the scholastic contextTrade Review"... The Routledge Companion to Seventeenth Century Philosophy is an excellent work that will prove a valuable resource for students and scholars alike." - Nicholas Jolley, Locke Studies "Extensive in the diversity of its content, and with chapters from leading specialists, this volume will provide an excellent introductory resource for any student of early modern philosophy. … This volume will provide a very useful tool for both scholars and students of early modern philosophy. It is well presented, with sections that cover not only the basics regarding the central philosophical themes of the seventeenth century, but also some of the more important debates in the secondary literature. Likewise, the reader will find both its ‘Index of Names’ and ‘Index of Subjects’ an extremely helpful research tool." - Christopher Thomas, British Journal for the History of Philosophy"It’s no small task for a book to capture all the most recent shifts in thinking about seventeenth-century philosophy. This work admirably rises to the challenge. With wide-ranging contributions from multiple experts in the field, the volume is inclusive, up-to-date, and deeply historically informed. It’s a marvellous achievement." - Jacqueline Broad, Monash University, Australia"This is an outstanding guide to seventeenth-century philosophy. With accessible, intelligent and reliable treatments of an admirably comprehensive range of topics, the Companion orients the reader in the press of seventeenth-century philosophical debate very effectively. This superb volume is a gift to students and scholars alike." - Thomas Holden, University of California Santa Barbara, USA"The Routledge Companion to Seventeenth Century Philosophy exemplifies the breadth and sophistication of current historiographical scholarship on the period. Its thematic organization welcomes those who are less familiar with the philosophies of the time and reflects the eclectic complexity of the philosophical practices and concerns unique to the 17th century European context." - Rebecca Copenhaver, Lewis & Clark College, USA"The Routledge Companioin to Seventeenth Century Philosophy is an excellent work that will prove a valuable resource for students and scholars alike." - Nicholas Jolley, University of California, Irvina, USA"... Taylor & Francis Ltd A Biographical Encyclopedia of Early Modern
Book SynopsisFrom the exemplary to the notorious to the obscure, this comprehensive and innovative encyclopedia showcases the worthy women of early modern England. Poets, princesses, or pirates, the women of power and agency found in these pages are indeed worth knowing, and this volume will introduce many female figures to even the most established scholars in early modern studies. Rather than using the conventional alphabetical format of the standard biographical encyclopedia, this volume is divided into categories of women. Since many women will fit in more than one category, each woman is placed in the category that best exemplifies her life, and is cross referenced in other appropriate sections. This structure makes the book an interesting read for seasoned scholars of early modern women, while students need not already be familiar with these subjects in order to benefit from the text. Another unusual feature of this reference work is that each entry begins with some incident from the woman's Trade Review"The encyclopedia is truly a collaborative effort, one that feels momentous: a crystillization of the maturity of the field and the range and extent of its activity [...] In sum, the amazing diversity of women's activities and undertaking documented, in greater or lesser detail, in the Biographical Encyclopedia more than makes up for any inconveniences the volume presents. One cannot help but finish even a perusal of its contents without being struck by the rich world of different presented here. And once striken, one will surely return for more."- Patricia Phillippy, Kingston University London, Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary JournalTable of ContentsTABLE OF CONTENTSLIST OF ILLUSTRATIONSPREFACEACKNOWLEDGMENTS1. Taylor & Francis Ltd Jewish Property After 1945
Book SynopsisQuestions arose after 1945, and have persisted, about the ownership of properties which had belonged to Jewish communities before the Second World War, to Holocaust victims and survivors, and to Jewish expellees from the Middle East and North Africa. Studies of these properties have often focused on their symbolic values, their places in cultures of memory and identity construction, and measures of justice achieved or denied. This collection explores contesting conceptions of ownership and property claims advanced in the post-war years. The authors focus considerably upon how conflicts over these properties both shaped and reflected shifting and competing ideas about Jewish belonging. They show their outcomes to have had considerable consequences for the lived experiences of both Jews and non-Jews around the world. This is because the properties in questions always maintained their worth as material assets, just as they could also impart financial liabilities and other Table of ContentsIntroduction – Jewish property after 1945: cultures and economies of ownership, loss, recovery, and transfer 1.
