Nova Science Publishers Inc Naval Actions of the War of 1812
Book SynopsisNaval Actions of the War of 1812 was previously published in 1896 to study the condition of affairs that led up to the declaration of the second war against Great Britain. Although England, it must be confessed, had plenty of fighting on her hands and troubles enough at home, she had not forgotten the chagrin and disappointments caused by the loss of the American colonies through a mistaken enforcement of high-handedness. And it was this same tendency that brought to her vaunted and successful navy as great an overthrow as their arms had received on land some thirty-seven years previously.

Book SynopsisMy Brother Theodore Roosevelt is not a biography, it is not a political history of the times, although the author was most careful in her effort to record facts accurately, and carefully searched her memory before relating conversations or experiences. Robinson hopes this work will paint a clear picture of Roosevelt by one who was closest to him and one who knew his loyalty and tenderness of heart.

Broadview Press Ltd Leviathan
Book SynopsisThomas Hobbes's Leviathan is the greatest work of political philosophy in English and the first great work of philosophy in English. In addition, it presents the fundamentals of his beliefs about language, epistemology, and an extensive treatment of revealed religion and its relation to politics.Beginning with premises that were sometimes controversial, such as that every human action is caused by the agent's desire for his own good, Hobbes derived shocking conclusions, such as that the civil government enjoys absolute control over its citizens and that the sovereign has the right to determine which religion is to be practiced in a commonwealth. Hobbes's contemporaries recognized the power of the arguments in Leviathan and many of them wrote responses to it. Selections from books by John Bramhall, Robert Filmer, Edward Hyde, George Lawson, William Lucy, Samuel Pufendorf and Thomas Tenison are included in this edition. Leviathan is divided into four parts: In the first part, Of Man, Hobbes presents a view of human beings and of the natural world in general that is materialistic and mechanistic. In the second part, Of Commonwealth, he defends the theory of absolute sovereignty, the view that the government has all the political power and has the right to control any aspect of life. In the third part, Of a Christian Commonwealth, he critiques concepts like revelation, prophets, and miracles in such a way that it becomes doubtful whether they can be rationally justified. In the fourth part, Of the Kingdom of Darkness, he explains various ways in which priestly religion has corrupted religion and transgressed the rights of the sovereign. In this revised edition of Hobbes's classic work, A.P. Martinich improves Hobbes's punctuation for the sake of clarity. He has also added new notes for readers, extensive cross references, and substantial part of Hobbes's reply to Bramhall's The Catching of Leviathan.Trade ReviewInternationally renowned Hobbes scholar A.P. Martinich has produced the definitive version of Leviathan for student use. Handsomely turned out by Broadview Press, this edition features a highly informative introduction, a brief chronology of Hobbes's life, as well as some useful notes on the text itself. Of special value are seven appendices drawn from the writings of contemporary critics of Hobbes's thought, including Filmer, Lawson, Bramhall, Hyde and others. Martinich has made a difficult but essential text as accessible to students as it is likely ever to become." - George Wright, University of Wisconsin"An admirably accessible edition of Hobbes's masterpiece. The work is presented clearly, in its entirety, and with generous excerpts from Hobbes's formidable contemporary critics." - Kinch Hoekstra, Balliol College, Oxford University"This very readable edition of Hobbes's Leviathan is an excellent resource for students of political philosophy and its history. The collection of published responses to Leviathan by some of Hobbes's most prominent contemporaries provides insight into the historical context in which he was writing, and philosophically challenging commentary on this great work of political philosophy." - Thomas Christiano, University of ArizonaTable of Contents Acknowledgements Introduction Thomas Hobbes: A Brief Chronology A Note on the Text Abbreviations Leviathan Appendix A: From Robert Filmer, Observations Concerning the Original of Government, Upon Mr Hobbes’s “Leviathan,” Mr Milton Against Salmasius, H. Broadview Press Ltd A Plea for Emigration: or Notes of Canada West
Book SynopsisMary Ann Shadd’s pamphlet A Plea for Emigration; or Notes of Canada West is, as the title promises, a settler guide designed to inform prospective immigrants of conditions in their proposed new home. But whereas most such works were addressed to potential white emigrants to North America from Britain or continental Europe, Shadd’s aimed to entice black Americans to emigrate to Canada. The introduction and background materials included in the volume situate Shadd’s pamphlet in its political and cultural context, and in the context of Shadd’s own remarkable life as an abolitionist, women’s rights activist, writer, and educator.Trade Review“Phanuel Antwi’s new edition of Mary Ann Shadd’s A Plea for Emigration is cause for celebration, for it brings the work of this fascinating nineteenth-century black feminist, abolitionist, journalist, editor, lawyer, and educational activist back into the wide circulation it deserves. Shadd’s groundbreaking pamphlet (accompanied in this edition by a rich selection of contextual materials) is every bit as foundational a work of Canadian literature as that other 1852 text, Susanna Moodie’s Roughing It in the Bush; its re-publication in this edition represents a substantial contribution to the vitally important ongoing project of reaching beyond Moodie’s and other European settler-invader accounts of Canadian experience.” — Lorraine York, William McMaster Chair in Canadian Literature and Culture, McMaster University“This new edition of Mary Ann Shadd’s A Plea for Emigration, with its fine introduction and stimulating contextual materials will … invigorate conversations about Canada’s complex relation to American slavery, as well as introduce its remarkable author to new generations of students and scholars. It is important and welcome.” — Leslie Sanders, Department of Humanities, York University“While much has been written about white settler populations in nineteenth-century Canada West (present-day Ontario), and a few authors have explored black populations in the region, most of whom were escaped African American slaves who had fled North via the “Underground Railroad,” much less is known about how black inhabitants felt about their land prospects, political rights, the Canadian climate and land. As one of the few settler guides aimed at nineteenth-century black readers, Shadd’s Plea for Emigration—now re-issued by Broadview with an informative introduction, explanatory notes, and a helpful selection of contextual materials—is an insightful, detailed description of the aforementioned, and so much more. The deliberate yet engaging writing of Mary Ann Shadd—educator, editor, feminist, abolitionist, and visionary—is … scarcely remembered in the annals of early African American literature; this pro-British, integrationist text shines a bright and long overdue light on Shadd’s unwavering activism and courage in challenging opposing attitudes about black liberation.” — Cheryl Thompson, University of TorontoTable of Contents Acknowledgements Introduction Mary Ann Shadd: A Brief Chronology A Note on the Text A Plea for Emigration; or Notes of Canada WestIn Context From Harriet Martineau, Society in America From Frederick Douglass, Life of an American Slave From William H. Broadview Press Ltd Coryat's Crudities: Selections
Book SynopsisThe early seventeenth-century traveler Thomas Coryate’s five-month tour of Western Europe culminated in Coryats Crudities, one of the strangest travelogues published in early modern England. This edition abridges the Crudities’ more than 900 pages to a manageable size, focusing on episodes most likely to be of interest to students—such as Coryate’s descriptions of Venetian mountebanks, courtesans, and Jews; his crossing of the Alps; and his attendance at a Corpus Christi celebration in Paris. The selection of contextual materials includes illustrations from the first edition, along with a sampling from another eccentric feature of the Crudities: a collection of mock commendatory poems making fun of Coryate and his journey.Trade Review“Philip S. Palmer’s judicious selection captures the full flavor and range of Coryate’s idiosyncratic and outlandish adventure. For the first time, this landmark text in the history of travel writing is made available in accessible format, allowing new generations of readers to appreciate its wit, energy, and carefully-constructed eccentricity. Coryate’s delight in oddities and in recounting his personal misfortunes is thoughtfully balanced in this edition against his equally important interests in exploring what could be achieved by travel and what it meant to be a tourist.” — Claire Jowitt, University of East Anglia“From his famous encounter with a Venetian courtesan to his celebration of the Great Tun of Heidelberg; from the Palace of Fontainbleu to the clock towers of Strasbourg; and whether describing great art treasures or the peculiarities of tavern meals, Coryate is invariably entertaining and informative.… We should be grateful to Philip Palmer, whose judicious selection makes Coryate widely available for general readers, and who provides enough explanation for us to comprehend the work while allowing it to speak for itself.” — Andrew Hadfield, University of SussexTable of Contents Acknowledgements Introduction Thomas Coryate: A Brief Chronology A Note on the Text Thomas Coryate: Selections Appendix A: Paratextual Materials from the 1611 Edition of Coryats Crudities Laurence Whitaker, ""Certain opening and drawing distiches"" arising out of the Crudities Ben Jonson, ""Certain other verses, as charms to unlock the mystery of the Crudities"" Thomas Coryate, ""To the High and Mighty Prince Henry"" Thomas Coryate, ""The Epistle to the Reader"" Ben Jonson, ""Character of the famous Odcombian, or rather Polytopian, Thomas the Coryate"" Ben Jonson, ""To the Right Noble Tom, Tell-Troth, of his Travails, the Coryate of Odcombe, and his Book now going to travel"" Thomas Coryate, ""An Introduction to the ensuing verses"" Selected ""Panegyricke Verses"" by John Donne and Hugh Holland Appendix B: Materials from Coryats Crambe (1611) Ben Jonson, ""To the London Reader, on the Odcombian writer, Polytopian Thomas the Traveller"" Hugh Holland, ""The same hand again to the Idiot's Readers"" from Thomas Coryate, ""Certain orations pronounced by the author of the Crudities"" Appendix C: Additional Materials from Other Sources Letter from Thomas Coryate to Sir Michael Hicks ""On Tom Coriat"" Works Cited and Select Bibliography

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc The Trial of Galileo: Essential Documents
Book SynopsisIn 1633, the Roman Inquisition condemned Galileo as a suspected heretic for defending Copernicus's hypothesis of the earth's motion and denying the scientific authority of Scripture. This book draws upon Maurice A. Finocchiaro's earlier works, especially The Galileo Affair: A Documentary History (1989), to provide a brief, new documentary history of Galileo's trial that is simultaneously the most user-friendly and inclusive available.Trade Review"Finocchiaro is the foremost scholar and translator of Galileo' works and this book an invaluable collection of key documents concerning the 'reatest scandal of Christendom'-the trial and condemnation of the founder of modern science as a heretic by the Roman Inquisition in 1633. The book follows and complements Finocchiaro' magisterial work Retrying Galileo:1633-1992 , and provides essential, original source material concerning the facts and issues indispensable for scholars, students and educated lay persons. Finocchiaro's masterly introductory essay provides a valuable guide to the history and issues, particularly helping to dispel the many myths regarding the scientific, philosophical, theological and political issues raised by Galileo's trial. An unrivaled resource for understanding the 'alileo Affair'" --Peter Slezak, University of New South Wales"Finocchiaro has proven himself to be one of the most reliable guides to the life and work of Galileo, and especially to the circumstances surrounding his condemnation by the Roman Catholic Church in 1633. In this superb book he provides his own careful and accurate translations of the essential documents that enable a reader to form an intelligent opinion about what has become known as the Galileo Affair. The various documents reveal the intellectual and philosophical issues, the human, social, political, bureaucratic, and religious factors, and the difficulty of reaching easy assessments and conclusions in history. Although Finocchiaro provides an invaluable Introduction, outlining the major philosophical, religious, and personal issues involved, and the sequence of salient events, his main aim is to allow readers to form their own conclusions, based on the original documents. We should all be grateful to him for making this possible in such an accessible and compelling way." --John Henry, University of Edinburgh"Maurice Finocchiaro has done more than anyone to make the documents of Galileo' trial available in English. This volume includes crucial new materials, incorporates recent research, and provides a clear, succinct and accessible introduction to one of the most fascinating episodes in the relations between science and religion, whose implications are still with us today." Biteback Publishing How to Steal a Country: State Capture and Hopes
Book SynopsisThe vertiginous decline in political leadership from Nelson Mandela to Jacob Zuma has engulfed South Africa in a serious crisis over the past `lost decade'. Based on his personal experience of the key protagonists, former British ambassador to South Africa Lord Renwick introduces the reader to an astonishing array of rogues and villains, ministers taken captive, crimebusters who are criminals, investigators who don't investigate, prosecutors who don't prosecute, red berets, black hearts and compulsive liars, alongside some heroes and an authentic heroine. The book reads like a crime novel as Renwick explores the ingenuity, audacity and impunity with which the South African state has been looted on an unimaginable scale, and how Bell Pottinger, KPMG, McKinsey and others became complicit in this process. But, in the end, this is an uplifting story, as a remarkable press, judiciary and civil society combined to `save South Africa' and its constitution under serious threat. Now, as Cyril Ramaphosa takes the reins, How to Steal a Country looks ahead to a brighter future, though Ramaphosa will find that his greatest challenges are within his own party.

Verso Books We Fight Fascists: The 43 Group and Their
Book SynopsisIn 1946 many Jewish soldiers returned to their homes in England imagining that they had fought and defeated the forces of fascism in Europe. Yet in London they found a revived fascist movement inspired by Sir Oswald Mosley and stirring up agitation against Jews and communists. Many felt that the government, the police and even the Jewish Board of Deputies were ignoring the threat; so they had to take matters into their own hands, by any means necessary.Forty-three Jewish servicemen met together and set up a group that tirelessly organised, infiltrated meetings, and broke up street demonstrations to stop the rebirth of the far right. The group included returned war heroes; women who went undercover; and young Jews, such as hairdresser Vidal Sassoon, seeking adventure. From 1947, the 43 Group grew into a powerful troop that could muster hundreds of fighters turning meetings into mass street brawls at short notice. The history of the 43 Group is not just a gripping story of a forgotten moment in Britain's postwar history; it is also a timely lesson in how to confront fascism, and how to win.Trade ReviewBrilliant, compelling and very timely. This is the sort of history we should all know about, especially in these troubled times, but were never taught at school. -- Keith Lowe, author of The Fear and the FreedomInspiring... the fundamental questions it raises have yet to disappear from our political landscape. -- Daniel Trilling * Guardian *A new, comprehensive history of the group. * The Economist *Sonabend's debut brilliantly chronicles the 43 Group's lightning-fast progress from a homespun organization with a handful of Jewish ex-servicemen...to a surprisingly sophisticated one with up to 2,000 members and intelligence and surveillance branches. * Haaretz *The 43 Group's extraordinary resilience and bravery deserve to be far more widely appreciated. * Morning Star *Sonabend delights in these madcap tales of the 43 Group's violent confrontations with their fascist opponents and the ways the members managed to elude the (sometimes-fascist-sympathizing) police. -- Mari Cohen * Jewish Currents *Daniel Sonabend brilliantly captures...a tale of often bloody, and occasionally terrifying "organized chaos." * Times of Israel *Sonabend combines academic rigour with an easy, readable style, all of which helps to throw into sharp relief the difficult questions the story raises. * New Statesman *A timely book...Sonabend deserves credit for resurrecting this story * Literary Review *This important book is not simply a trip down memory lane, but a warning from history. Auckland University Press World, the Flesh and the Devil
Book SynopsisNew Zealanders know Samuel Marsden as the founder of the CMS missions that brought Christianity (and perhaps sheep) to New Zealand. Australians know him as 'the flogging parson' who established large landholdings and was dismissed from his position as magistrate for exceeding his jurisdiction. English readers know of Marsden for his key role in the history of missions and empire. In this major biography spanning research, and the subject's life, across England, New South Wales and New Zealand, Andrew Sharp tells the story of Marsden's life from the inside. Sharp focuses on revealing to modern readers the powerful evangelical lens through which Marsden understood the world. By diving deeply into key moments - the voyage out, the disputes with Macquarie, the founding of missions - Sharp gets us to reimagine the world as Marsden saw it: always under threat from the Prince of Darkness, in need of 'a bold reprover of vice', a world written in the words of the King James Bible. Andrew Sharp takes us back into the nineteenth-century world, and an evangelical mind, to reveal the past as truly a foreign country. A major new biography of the leading evangelist to New Zealand, Samuel Marsden, and the struggles with 'the world, the flesh and the devil' that he spent his life pursuing This book is the result of many years' archival research and presents fresh insights on a well-known but little-understood figure in New Zealand history Suitable for readers of history, both in New Zealand and abroad-particularly in Australia, where Marsden spent many years which are covered extensively in this book .

CONNELL PUBLISHING LTD World War I: The most catastrophic event in 20th
Book SynopsisFor many, before 1914, a huge European war had seemed impossible. Conflicts in the Balkans flared up yet stayed contained. The Belgian historian Henri Pirenne wrote to a friend in December 1905: “Do you really believe in the possibility of a war? For me it is impossible to have the least fear in that regard.” In March 1912, the British peer Lord Esher – an authority on defence matters – told an audience of Britain’s senior Generals that war “becomes every day more difficult and improbable”. After all, what could be gained by war? In 1909, the British writer Norman Angell claimed that with the increasing interdependence of nations war could not benefit the victor. All participating countries would be impoverished; the idea of victory was a “great illusion”. In this short guide Max Egremont looks at controversies which have raged over the years. What caused the war? Who should be blamed for its outbreak? Should Britain have joined in and, after it did, were its soldiers really, as has been claimed, “lions led by donkeys”? What was America’s role? And was the final peace settlement as fair and sensible as possible in the circumstances or, by humiliating Germany, did the Allies pave the way to a Second World War, a truly global conflict which turned out to be even bloodier and more destructive than the First?

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Edmond Richer and the Renewal of Conciliarism in
Book SynopsisIn 1611 Edmond Richer, the syndic of the Faculty of Theology of Paris, published a short but incisive defence of the conciliarist doctrine under the title De ecclesiastica et politica potestate. He claimed that this doctrine had been almost uninterruptedly followed by the University of the Paris since the time of the Council of Constance in the early 15th century. Within two years, at least six Latin, French or bilingual editions of the treatise saw the light as well as an English and a Dutch translation. The book was condemned at a meeting of the French bishops in March 1612 and its author was dismissed from his position of syndic of the Faculty of Theology a few months later. He withdrew from public life but remained influential. He continued to write in defence of the conciliarist doctrine and the so-called liberties of the Gallican Church until his death in 1631. He vehemently opposed Cardinal Bellarmine's doctrine of the indirect power of popes in temporal matters but never subscribed to the doctrine of the divine power of kings. Most of his books were published posthumously.Philippe Denis retraces Edmond Richer's career and examines his ecclesiological and political thinking. Without taking all the syndic's opinions at face value, this volume commits itself to taking seriously Richer's declared intention, which was to vindicate the teaching of the School of Paris and that of Jean Gerson in particular. Philippe Denis places the heated, sometimes aggressive, debates between Richer and his adversaries in the context of a double progression: that of the doctrine of an absolute monarchy, a form of government which had been developing since the troubles of the League, and that of the Ultramontane ideas, often disputed but supported with growing vigour, in France and elsewhere, in the context of the reception of the Council of Trent.Philippe Denis presents the English translation of his book originally published in French (Editions du Cerf in Paris, 2014).

ibidem-Verlag, Jessica Haunschild u Christian Schon Seven Slovak Women: Portraits of Courage,
Book SynopsisThis engaging and insightful book is the first historical study in English portraying the lives and fates of Slovak women. The seven life stories, ranging from the late 19th century to the present day, expose the often cruel political history of Slovakia through the eyes of prominent women whose acts and deeds on behalf of their fellow citizens remain unforgotten in the Slovak collective mind. The four chapters and three oral history interviews offer a captivating insight into how the situation of Slovak women in society has changed during a most eventful period of history. This book will be complemented by a second volume on Czech women whose lives have been of the same singular importance for the Czech lands as their Slovak counterparts were for their country. The two volumes are separate entities in their own right, but together provide the reader with a comprehensive picture of women's lives in the Czech lands and Slovakia, stressing the distinct political circumstances Czech and Slovak women have faced in recent history.

V&R unipress GmbH Questioning Bodies in Shakespeare's Rome
Book SynopsisAncient Rome has always been considered a compendium of City and World. In the Renaissance, an era of epistemic fractures, when the clash between the new science (Copernicus, Galileo, Vesalius, Bacon, etcetera) and the authority of ancient texts produced the very notion of modernity, the extended and expanding geography of ancient Rome becomes, for Shakespeare and the Elizabethans, a privileged arena in which to question the nature of bodies and the place they hold in a changing order of the universe. Drawing on the rich scenario provided by Shakespeares Rome, and adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the authors of this volume address the way in which the different bodies of the earthly and heavenly spheres are re-mapped in Shakespeares time and in early modern European culture. More precisely, they investigate the way bodies are fashioned to suit or deconstruct a culturally articulated system of analogies between earth and heaven, microcosm and macrocosm. As a whole, this collection brings to the fore a wide range of issues connected to the Renaissance re-mapping of the world and the human. It should interest not only Shakespeare scholars but all those working on the interaction between sciences and humanities.

University Press of Southern Denmark Living with the Black Death
Book SynopsisBetween 1347 and 1352 an unknown and deadly disease, only much later known as the Black Death, swept across Europe, leaving an estimated 30-50 % of the population dead. Contemporaries held various views as to what was the final, ultimate cause of this disaster. Many, probably most, thought it was God''s punishment for the sins of humankind, others thought it was basically a natural phenomenon caused by a fateful constellation of the heavenly bodies. Recurrent plague epidemics racked Europe from 1347 to the early 18th century. Populations were repeatedly struck with more or less disastrous consequences but every time people recovered and resumed their activities. Their experiences made them try various measures to protect themselves and prevent outbreaks or at least to minimize the consequences. In short they were Living with The Black Death. This book deals with plague, particularly in Northern Europe, in various aspects: epidemiology, pattern of dispersion, demography, social consequences, religious impact and representation in pictorial art and written sources.
