Taylor & Francis The Old South
Book SynopsisIn this, the re-titled second edition of Society and Culture in the Slave South, J. William Harris selects the most recent and original scholarship in the field of the antebellum South published since 1992, when the first edition appeared. The present volume illustrates both the continuities and new developments in antebellum Southern history, starting from the work of Eugene Genovese and Elizabeth Fox-Genovese, and moving into work that challenges their traditional reading of the slave South as a paternalist society. The collection also features an introduction to the historiography of the slave South, and a Guide to Further Reading.Trade Review"J. William Harris' The Old South: New Studies of Society and Culture brings together an impressive array of diverse social and cultural history of the pre-Civil war South as written by some of the most gifted scholars among the current generation of southern historians. It is broadly representative of much of the best work done over the past fifteen years. It successfully defines the cutting edge of southern social and cultural history for all who care to know."— Lacy Ford, author of A Companion to the Civil War and Reconstruction"With essays about plantation owners and slaves, labor and property, and many forms of politics, this collection presents the easiest way to encounter the most exciting recent scholarship on the antebellum South."— Ted Ownby, author of American Dreams in Mississippi: Consumers, Poverty, and Culture, 1830-1998"In this revised collection of essays, J. William Harris has provided teachers of southern history with an invaluable teaching tool that incorporates the newest and most exciting approaches to the social and cultural history of the Old South such as gender relations and political culture."— Mitchell Snay, author of Fenians, Freedmen, and Southern Whites: Race and Nationality in the Era of Reconstruction 'This gives a really good platform for dissertation reserach and, in my opinion, is an excellent read in its own right' – Richard Toley, History Teaching Review'This gives a really good platform for dissertation reserach and, in my opinion, is an excellent read in its own right' – Richard Toley, History Teaching Review

Taylor & Francis Ltd (Sales) Fascism and the Right in Europe 19191945 Seminar Studies In History
Book SynopsisThis new text places interwar European fascism squarely in its historical context and analyses its relationship with other right wing, authoritarian movements and regimes. Beginning with the ideological roots of fascism in pre-1914 Europe, Martin Blinkhorn turns to the problem-torn Europe of 1919 to 1939 in order to explain why fascism emerged and why, in some settings, it flourished while in others it did not. In doing so he considers not just the 'major' fascist movements and regimes of Italy and Germany but the entire range of fascist and authoritarian ideas, movements and regimes present in the Europe of 1919-1945.Table of ContentsPart 1 Background; Chapter 1 Problems of Studying Fascism; Chapter 2 Foretastes of Fascism in Pre-1914 Europe; Part 2 Analysis; Chapter 3 Interwar Europe in Crisis; Chapter 4 Fascist and Right-Wing Movements, 1919–1939; Chapter 5 Fascist and Right-Wing Regimes; Chapter 6 Theories and Interpretations; Part 3 Conclusions; Chapter 7 Understanding Fascism; Chapter 8 Appendix: Fascism, A Template; Part 4 Documents;

Taylor & Francis The Oil Crisis Turning Points
Book Synopsis In October 1973 two crises â one economic, one political â intersected, with dramatic and long term consequences for international relations. On 6 October, Egypt and Syria launched an attack on Israel, and within a few days the major Arab oil producers announced their support by use of the âoil weaponâ, including a boycott of supplies for countries friendly to Israel and a programme of production cuts. This was followed by the unilateral declaration of a steep increase in the price of oil by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The result was international panic and world recession. Crude oil prices soared by a massive fourfold in just three months. The West's vulnerability had been exposed: it was being held hostage to oil. Yet, despite efforts to address this dependence on oil imports in following years, the 1979 Iranian Revolution triggered a further upward surge in prices. Today, the importance of oil remains at the forefront of the West's foreign policy calculations in the Middle East. In this fascinating and timely new look at the oil crisis, Fiona Venn examines these issues and the more unexpected effects of the crisis. She asks just how much really changed in the economic balance of power. Most importantly she argues that OPEC was used as a scapegoat for the world recession, which had been already underway when the crisis detonated. Trade Review'a thoughtful and balanced historical narrative based on extensive reading of the relevant literature.' The Journal of Energy Literature' a useful introductory survey, which puts into perspective many of the exaggerated fears and hopes which found such ready expression in the heat of the oil crisis.'James Bamberg , BP History Project, University of Cambridge, HistoryTable of ContentsList of Tables and Maps. Taylor & Francis The Fourth Crusade Event and Context The Medieval World
Book SynopsisThe Fourth Crusade (1202-4) was one of the key events in medieval historyThe fall of Constantinople to the Venetians and the soldiers of the fourth crusade in April 1204 was its climax. It ensured that Byzantiumâs days as a great power were over. It equally ensured that westerners would dominate the Levant â the lands of the old Byzantine Empire âuntil the end of the middle ages. This book asks just how important was the Fourth as a turning point in the Middle East.. The broad setting is the encounter of Byzantium with the West within the framework of the crusades. Differences of outlook and interest meant that this encounter was soon overburdened with mutual distrust. 1204 was some kind of a solution and created situations scarcely conceivable even two years before when the fourth crusade set sail from Venice.Trade Review'a sophisticated, wide-ranging and thought-provoking analysis...a fine, learned and sensitive book.' The Times Literary Supplement '....probably the most important contribution to our understanding of the road to, and significance of 1204...'Christopher Tyerman, The International History Review 'In all, if Angold's book is not the only work readers may want for the story of the Fourth Crusade, its insights and provocations can be ignored by no historian of medieval Christendom in the twelfth-fourteenth centuries.'John W. Taylor & Francis The Decline and Fall of the Habsburg Empire 18151918 Assorted cover image
Book SynopsisA new and revised edition of Alan Skedâs groundbreaking book which examines how the Habsburg Empire survived the revolutionary turmoil of 1848.âThe Year of Revolutions', saw the whole of Europe convulsed in turmoil and revolt. Yet the Habsburg Empire survived. As state after state succumbed to the violent winds of change that were sweeping the continent. How did the Habsburg Empire survive? How was the army able hold together while the rest of the empire collapsed in civil war, and how was it able to seize the political initiative In this new edition, Alan Sked reflects on the changed understanding of the period which resulted from the first appearance of this book, and widens the discussion to look at the Habsburg Empire alongside the decline of the Russian and German Empires, arguing that it is possible to understand their decline from a broad European perspective, as opposed to the overly narrow focus of recent explanations. Alan Sked makes us look at familiar events with new eyes in this radical, vigorously written classic which is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of nineteenth-century Europe.Trade Review'This is a book to be savoured and relished...rich in anecdote, irony, paradox, and intelligence, it is a must for anyone...looking for an example of historical writing in its most lively, informative and attractive form.' Taylor & Francis Ltd The 1848 Revolutions in GermanSpeaking Europe
Book Synopsis In 1848 the continent of Europe was rocked by revolutions: only Great Britain and Russia remained relatively immune to the upheaval. Most spectacularly, the Revolutions swept across the German-speaking lands of central Europe, with the newly-released forces of nationalism and mass popular protest smashing the reactionary Metternich regimes which had held sway since the defeat of Napoleon. The Metternich system was dead: nationalism and national self-determination asserted themselves as the dominant dynamic forces of continental Europe in the later nineteenth century. This impressive history examines the political and social implications of the 1848 Revolutions for the future destiny and shape of Europe as a whole, and explores the wider forces at play in the German lands of nineteenth-century Europe.Table of ContentsPrefaceApproaches to the German revolutions of 1848/9Structure of the bookAuthor's acknowledgements and editorial policy1 German society in transition (1789-1815)VlllVlllXIlXlll1The impact of the French Revolution of 1789 1Intellectual responses to the French Revolution of 1789 2The struggle for supremacy between Austria and Prussia 5Events in Switzerland and other non-imperial Germanspeaking territories 8The emergence of a 'Third Germany' 9Constitutional and socio-economic reforms 10Reforms in Prussia and Austria 12The wars of liberation and the restoration of the old order 142 The 'Holy Alliance' and Vormärz: the demise ofthe German ancien regime and the preface tothe revolutionsThe German Confederation, a battle-ground for forces of18reaction and modernization 19The period of re action (1815-30) 21From re action to protest: the role of the intelligentsia 26Religious strife 30The nationality issue and the formation of political groups 32Political literature during the Vormärz 34Social and economic conditions within the Confederation 36The Swiss civil war 403 The March and April revolutions in the'Third Germany'The impact of the French February RevolutionObservations on the social strata in the 'Third Germany'The rural population46465353v ContentsArtisans and industrial workers 55The 1848 uprising in Baden and its impact on otherGerman regions 58The role of established protest groups 65Government responses and the establishment of thePre-Parliament 704 The revolutions in Vienna and Berlin 77The revolution in Vienna: Social and economic conditions 77Vienna's March revolution 80From the May revolution to the September crisis 82The 'October revolution' and reactionary victory 87The revolution in Berlin 89Social and economic conditions in Berlin 90The '
