Book SynopsisThis book explores the relevance of conspiracy theories in the modern social and political history of the Nordic countries. The Nordic countries have traditionally imagined themselves as stable, wealthy, egalitarian welfare states. Conspiracy theories, mistrust and disunity, the argument goes, happened elsewhere in Europe (especially Eastern Europe), the Middle East or in the United States. This book paints a different picture by demonstrating that conspiracy theories have always existed in the Nordic region, both as a result of structural tensions between different groups and in the aftermath of traumatic events, but seem to have become more prominent over the last 30 or 40 years. While the book covers events and developments in each of the Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Finland), it is not a comparative country analysis. Rather, the book focuses on conspiracy theories in and about the Nordic region as a region, arguing that similaritTable of Contents1. Conspiracy Theories and the Nordic Countries 2. Book SynopsisThis edited collection explores the axis where monstrosity and borderlands meet to reflect the tensions, apprehensions, and excitement over the radical changes of the early modern era. The book investigates the monstrous as it acts in liminal spaces in the Renaissance and the era of Enlightenment. Zones of interaction include chronological change â from the early New World encounters through the seventeenth century â and cultural and scientific changes, in the margins between national boundaries, and also cultural and intellectual boundaries.Table of ContentsIntroduction Hans Peter Broedel and Jana Byars 1. Book SynopsisThis edited collection explores the deeper contexts and consequences surrounding the murder of Matthew Shepard. This young gay man was brutally beaten and left tied to a fence on a chill Wyoming night in October 1998. Found the next morning by two cyclists, he was transported to a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado where he died five days later. His murder was one of the most publicized and for some, most vividly remembered, instances of hate crime related violence based on sexual orientation.Twenty years after his death, Matthew Shepard's story is at a critical turning point: memories of his murder and its meanings can either fade into the past or be reinvigorated to make up part of more meaningful investigations into LGBTQ and modern U.S. history. The multidisciplinary contributors to this book blend personal narrative with more conventional academic approaches to offer a 20-year retrospective that re-examines the subject of Shepard's murdeTable of ContentsIntroduction Part I: Where It All Started Chapter 1: Go Back, Young Man, Go Back: Peeling Away the Layers of Wyoming Culture, Down To the Earth Chapter 2: The Matt Stuff Part II: Beyond Wyoming Chapter 3: Matthew Shepard 20 Years Later: Social, Political, and Hate Crimes' Impact in Rural America Chapter 4: Metronormativity as Legacy: Matthew Shepard, Gay Rights, and Rural Place Chapter 5: Affective Aesthetics of Violence: A Legacy of Matthew Shepard Part III: Back to the Beginning Chapter 6: Whiteboard Chapter 7: Laramie Inside out: Reflections 20 Years Later, Bibliography

    15 in stock

A Meaning-Based Approach to Art Therapy contextualizes the phenomena of Holocaust artwork for the field of art therapy and uses this canon of artwork to support the inclusion of logotherapy into art therapy theory and practice. The author expounds on a study in which she interviewed surviving Holocaust artists about how they were able to create their artworks while in Nazi captivity. Divided into three parts, the book follows the chronological order of her inquiry. It first presents theory, then research, and ends with implications for the practice of art therapy. The research chapters set out the process and results of the author''s phenomenological inquiry. They address how art making during the Holocaust allowed captive artists to bear witness, leave a legacy and retain their humanity. In the final part, the author reveals how art therapists can use concepts from her study to support the progress of their clients. She advocates for the application of logotherapy, a
