Le discours indirect qualifie par les Latins d'"oratio obliqua" est-il un compte rendu differe de paroles, rapportees par un tiers, qui occulte l'orateur originel ou au contraire reste-t-il une parole vive et performative? Cet ouvrage tente de montrer que la reponse se trouve dans la deuxieme hypothese en s'appuyant sur les traites de rhetorique, la grammaire du texte et une lecture stylistique des discours. Sont mises en lumiere d'authentiques strategies de discours qui permettent l'elaboration de portraits de personnages. Le discours indirect entre dans le cadre d'un processus de caracterisation qui donne vie aux personnages et a leurs motivations les plus profondes. Une diachronie longue, portant sur les trois grands historiens latins Cesar, Tite-Live et Tacite, conduit ainsi a l'histoire d'un style.

Book SynopsisThe Chronicle of King Gälawdewos (r. 1540–1559), reporting the nineteen years of the king’s reign, is one of the most useful and significant historical sources for the history of Christian-Muslim relation in the sixteenth century of Ethiopia and the Horn. It represents a peculiar text in Gǝʿǝz historiography both because of its narrative structure and the underlying sources used by the chronicler. Numerous Arabisms appear in the text, which eventually suggest that the Chronicle was written by a person with an outstanding knowledge of Arabic, in 1561. The book presents a new critical edition based on all available manuscripts and provides some detailed introductory notes and an English translation. The new edition yields philological findings concerning the Chronicle of King Gälawdewos in particular and new inputs that call for re-editing the Ethiopian royal chronicles in general. It also adds valuable by now not recorded items for Gǝʿǝz lexicography and corrects historical distortions resulted from the previous edition. Above all, the work provides a text-critically established edition of the Chronicle of King Gälawdewos accompanied by an up-to-date concisely annotated translation, which offer new insights into the late medieval history and historiography of Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.

Peeters Publishers Intercultural Exchange in Late Antique
Book SynopsisLate Antiquity is the land of plenty for scholars interested in intercultural exchange, and yet the subject still lacks systematical investigation. The study of late antique historiography allows for a particularly rewarding approach. Late antique historiographical texts testify to contemporary attitudes towards contacts between different cultures, religions, languages; but they were also impacted on by intercultural exchange, mostly in the form of translation or adaptation of sources imported from other cultural areas. The six contributions gathered in this volume present case studies focused on the Mediterranean region and Western Asia, crossing religious, linguistic and political borders in a chronological framework that goes from the fourth to the eleventh centuries.
