    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis edited collection explores the axis where monstrosity and borderlands meet to reflect the tensions, apprehensions, and excitement over the radical changes of the early modern era. The book investigates the monstrous as it acts in liminal spaces in the Renaissance and the era of Enlightenment. Zones of interaction include chronological change â from the early New World encounters through the seventeenth century â and cultural and scientific changes, in the margins between national boundaries, and also cultural and intellectual boundaries.Table of ContentsIntroduction Hans Peter Broedel and Jana Byars 1. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Charles Kingsley

Book SynopsisNovelist, poet, Anglican priest, and controversialist, Charles Kingsley (181975) epitomizes the bustling Victorian man of faith and letters, a prolific polymath as ready to break a lance with John Henry Newman over Christian doctrine as he was to preach to schoolchildren on the virtues of manly, physical struggle. Kingsley's The Water-Babies and Westward Ho! were best-sellers which became classics of children's literature. Kingsley has come to epitomize the Victorian age.On closer inspection, Kingsley is harder to categorize: a socialist who was also an imperialist, a Chartist revolutionary who was Queen Victoria's favourite novelist, a natural theologian who popularized Darwin, a priest who celebrated sex as sacrament. Kingsley only appears straightforward if you consider him one piece at a time. The debates he shaped remain with us today: faith and sexuality, economics and exploitation, race and identity. The aim of this book is to present the whole man: to coTable of ContentsIntroduction: Charles Kingsley: "The Most Typical Victorian of Them All" 1. "Love Me! Baby! • Taylor & Francis Ltd Historical Experience

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume brings together a collection of recent essays on the philosophy and theory of history. This is a field of lively interdisciplinary discussion and research, to which historians, philosophers and theorists of culture and literature have contributed. The author is a philosopher by training, and his inspiration comes primarily from the continental-phenomenological tradition. Thus the influence of Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty and Ricoeur can be discerned here. This background opens up a unique perspective on the issues under discussion. Phenomenology differs from other philosophical approaches, like metaphysics and epistemology. Phenomenology asks, of anything that exists or may exist: how is it given, how does it enter our experience, what is our experience of it like? Very broadly we can say: phenomenology is about experience. At first glance, this approach may seem ill-suited to history. In our language, history usually means either 1) what happened, i.e. past eTable of ContentsIntroduction 1PART 1Historicity, narrative, and time 91 On historicity 112 Reflections on temporal perspective: the use and abuse of hindsight 243 The stories of our lives: aging and narrative 344 On being historical 46PART 2Teleology and history 595 Teleology and the experience of history 616 Husserl and Foucault on the historical a priori: teleological and anti-teleological views of history 757 Historical teleology: the grand illusion? 868 On the metaphilosophy of history 97PART 3Embodiment and experience 1139 Intersubjectivity and embodiment 11510 History as orientation: Rüsen on historical culture and narration 12811 Erlebnis and history 14412 Experience and history 153
