  • Aston Villa History of The Beautiful Name -

Mapseeker Digital Ltd Aston Villa History of The Beautiful Name -

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAlso featured is part of a rare 1833 map showing the first "street" to be cut through the Manor of Aston - named Villa Street after the imposing landmark Georgian Villa - Aston Villa - located on the junction of Heathfield Road and Lozells Road. Another feature shows the arrival of the Wesleyans and the building of their chapel in 1865, in 1872 young fellows of the chapel form a cricket team. Keen enough on their cricket in the Summer months, they establish Aston Villa Football Club in 1874 to play the new game of Association Football so they could be together in the Winter months. Aston Villa's earliest games were played on the then famous "sports meadow", part of the great leisure complex opened in 1872 and featured on the work. Also featured is the "Wellington Road ground", Perry Barr, the first football home of Aston Villa, from where they played between 1876 and 1897. In 1888 Aston Villa director William McGregor became the founding father of the Football League, with Aston Villa being one of the twelve founder clubs. One year later in 1889, back down at the Aston Lower Grounds, the famous sports meadow has been lost to housing. Dovehouse Pool is drained and in its place the owners of the leisure complex build a cycle track with a central sports ground. In 1897 Aston Villa leave Wellington Road, Perry Barr, and move to the Aston Lower Grounds, the sports ground gradually became known as "Villa Park" To the top left and right are rare images of match action from Villa Park, to the centre of these images is the first picture captured from a 1901 "home" game against arch rivals Small Heath, later to be named Birmingham City. The heading to the top of the work quotes "By the turn of the 20th century Aston Villa - the greatest name in football in every sense - had become of the most powerful sides in the country - They had secured the league title 5 times since the start of the league in 1888, and won the F.A Cup 3 times". The heading at the bottom of the work quotes " The City of Birmingham with sinewy arms and sooty face, was forging its name in brass and iron as the workshop of the World, when one Winters night in 1874 a few young men stroked their whiskers and bestowed on a new born football club a name unique in sporting history".

  • Winchester

    Oxbow Books Winchester

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe volume is co-published by the Winchester Excavations Committee and forms Volume 11 of the Winchester Studies series.Following the success of volumes IV (Windsor and Eton) and V (York) in the series of Historic Towns Atlases, the new volume maps and explains the history of Winchester face=Calibri>– a city which has played such an important part in English history from Roman times onwards.Combining many full-colour maps with an authoritative but very readable text, the atlas shows how the Roman city of Venta Belgarum became the second-most important city in England for several centuries: a walled town, the seat of kings and an ecclesiastical centre almost unparalleled in the country, before gently declining into a judicial centre and county town. The Atlas is centred on a detailed map of the city at the scale of 1:2500, showing Winchester's historic buildings and structures on a map of the city as it was in 1800. A series of maps show how Winchester was at key points in its history, charting its development and changing shape. The Atlas includes an early OS map, modern maps and historic aerial photographs, as well as colour illustrations, many of which have never been published before. The introduction offers a full history of how and why Winchester developed from prehistoric times onwards, in a series of chapters written by historians but aimed at the general reader. It also includes a comprehensive reference gazetteer listing every place shown on the maps, with a map location, a brief history, and further reading for those interested in finding out more.Like its companion volumes, the maps, text, gazetteer and illustrations are presented in an A3 stiff card binder, and the format allows for maps of different date to be compared side-by-side.Trade ReviewThe maps and illustrations are fortified by nine brilliant essays. But to me the most valuable part of the Atlas, apart from the maps, is the gazeteer. * Oxford Recorder *

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRenaissance Galway is the next ancillary publication from the Irish Historic Towns Atlas. The subject of the book is the remarkable ‘pictorial map’ of Galway, which was produced in the mid-seventeenth century. It offers a bird’s eye view of Galway city at this time and presents insights into the cultural, sociopolitical and religious outlook of the local ruling elite — the so-called ‘tribes’ of Galway. Originally intended as a wall hanging, it was produced to impress and remains a centrepiece of Galway’s visual history. Only two copies of the original printed map are known to exist and it is the well-preserved version from Trinity College, Dublin that is reproduced in Renaissance Galway. Following the format of previous map-guides from the Irish Historic Towns Atlas, the book presents carefully selected extracts from the pictorial map, each accompanied by a commentary. These range from descriptions of particular buildings or areas, to aspects of everyday life that are revealed in the map. In an introductory essay, the author ponders the many mysteries that continue to surround the pictorial map of Galway — its origins, compilers and purpose. Together the map extracts and accompanying texts offer a new perspective — a window into the culture and mindset of Galway’s mid-seventeenth century ruling Catholic elite. The modern viewer is invited to inhabit the world of ‘Renaissance Galway’. The Irish Historic Towns Atlas is a research project of the Royal Irish Academy and is part of a wider European scheme. www.ihta.ieTrade Review'Paul Walsh has selected 38 sections of the map, blown them up, and accompanied each with a wonderfully informative explanatory essay, and in doing so has presented us with a remarkable visual tour of the urban landscape of the period and also various coats of arms, allegorical images, and aspects of everyday life. Book SynopsisI asked my soul: What is Delhi? She replied: The world is the body and Delhi its life.' So said Mirza Ghalib, poet in the court of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar. This special two-book slipcase set on Delhi's Shahjahanabad, famous for its imperial aura and history, as well as spiritual ambience, is a journey through the majestic Red Fort and the lanes of the living, planned and walled Mughal city on the banks of River Yamuna. Delhi 360: A Unique Panorama in The British Library Collection. Made in 1846, the painting commonly known as The Delhi Panorama' by the famous topographical artist Mazhar Ali Khan is the finest artistic rendering of Shahjahanabad ever made. It also affords a unique glimpse into the heart of the imperial palace in the Red Fort before much of it was destroyed after the 1857 Uprising. The 360 view of Delhi along with its extraordinary detailing of the cityscape makes the panorama not just an important historical document but also the masterpiece of its artist. The 5-metre long panorama, in the collection of the British Library since 1981, along with all the Persian and Urdu inscriptions has never before been published complete. Its publication here is accompanied by essays that put the panorama in its historical and artistic context with a commentary on the inscriptions that brings it to life. Shahjahanabad Delhi's Shahjahanabad was first founded as an empire's capital at the glorious height of the Mughal dynasty; from this vantage point, it was also witness to the empire's decline and eventual extinction. The city would transform profoundly in the aftermath of the Revolt of 1857, with many of its neighbourhoods and buildings obliterated, and many of its inhabitants, including the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar, having left, never to return. Fortunately, a mapmaker, working in 1846, painstakingly depicted important buildings, streets, and landmarks, providing a wealth of information about the city as it had evolved up to that time.

  • Atlas of the Holocene Netherlands: Landscape and

Amsterdam University Press Atlas of the Holocene Netherlands: Landscape and

Book SynopsisThe landscape of the Netherlands has been changing constantly since the end of the last ice age, some 11,700 years ago. Where we walk today was once a polar desert, a river delta or a shallow sea. The end of the last ice age marked the beginning of a new geological period - the Holocene, the relatively warm geological epoch in which we are still living today. The Atlas of the Holocene Netherlands contains special maps, supplemented by archaeological and historical information. These maps show the geographical situation for thirteen different points in time since the last ice age, based on tens of thousands of drill samples and the latest geological, soil and archaeological research. This magnificent atlas also paints a surprising picture of the position we humans have occupied in the landscape. It addresses such questions as: How did we take advantage of the opportunities offered by the landscape? And how did we mould the landscape to suit our own purposes? The Atlas of the Holocene Netherlands will change once and for all the way you look at the Dutch landscape.Trade Review"The Holocene history of the Netherlands is a learning site for coastal sedimentary landscapes all over the world. The international community is indebted to this team of experts that shared their deep understanding of landscape evolution. Learning the lessons from this atlas may prevent future catastrophes.
