Readworthy Publications Pvt Ltd Amartya Sen's Hindu Bash
Book SynopsisThe volume is an erudite work on Nobel Laureate Prof. Amartya Sen''s perception of Hinduism and the Hindus as evident in his books The Argumentative Indian and Identity and Violence. It examines Sen''s stinging views on Hindutva and Hindu culture. The author argues that the work engages in Hindu-baiting and scrutinizes certain discrepancies that have crept in as a result of accepting theories, such as Sri Rama was a myth and Ramayana is a parable, uncritically. The book also comments on Prof. Sen''s allegations that Hindu political activists nowadays pay little heed to the ''tolerant'' Hindu tradition and are bent upon rewriting history to suit their own ideologies.

Roli Books Pvt Ltd Dancing With The Gods
Book SynopsisThis book is an ode to the mythological heritage of Bharatanatyam. The visual narrative captures the rich heritage of this temple dance and its original exponents, the Devadasis or ‘handmaidens of the deity’. Its repertoire of movements and moods bring alive the fascinating stories of Hindu gods and goddesses and their kaleidoscopic lives. In the following pages, the authors have traced the myths and legends that are cherished in our performing arts, to delight the culture-curious reader. And what is interesting is that in these stories, the reader will discover the inter-connectedness of ancient mythologies around the world. Perhaps such discoveries go a long way in validating the role that art plays in connecting civilisations. The book is designed to engage the reader without pedagogy or scholastic strictures, but with a lightness of touch, that entertains while it informs. Because the vision here is to weave information, anecdotes and trivia, together in the spirit of a popular cultural ranconteur. Replete with rare photographs curated from the Sohinimoksha World Dance and Communications archives, complemented by a lucid narrative that wraps facts in the language of romance and adventure, this book promises to be a collector’s item for those who value the legacy of India’s most celebrated dance form. For glimpses of some live performances by Sohini Roychowdhury, and her Sohinimoksha World Dance troupe, celebrating the music, dance, mythology of India and the World, go on-line to ‘Dancing With The God.... with Sohinimoksha World Dance’ at https://youtu.be/naR7p6SKiko

Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo The Temple Road Towards a Great India: Birla
Book SynopsisThe book presents the results of research carried out in recent years on the temples founded by the Birla family in northern and central India. The material gathered by the authors and the preliminary analysis based on it led to the creation of the first publication of this type, not only in Polish literature on the subject but also internationally. This is a monograph based on first-hand material, presenting the whole of the Birlas' sacral foundations – referring both to their importance in the context of national art, as well as their functioning in the social or political discourse on identity in pre-independence India. This project run for decades by successive Birla generations constitutes a highly coherent enterprise. The guiding idea was defined as building foundations for the spiritual and political power of modern India through a new reading of Indian tradition, in line with the challenges of the twentieth century. The book is therefore addressed to readers interested in India, particularly in the interpretation and recreation of tradition using the medium of art. The data presented in this book – representing only a small fragment of what was gathered – and the subsequent discussion open up new, extremely promising directions of research.

NIAS Press Divinity and Diversity: A Hindu Revitalization
Book SynopsisThe "9-11" attacks on the United States and subsequent "war on terrorism" have brought a discussion of transnational "religious" networks onto centre stage. While the Sai Baba movement, the focus of this study, has no militaristic ideology, it may - like any other such movement - ultimately call into question the sovereignty of the nation state. Today, issues of faith and devotion are more urgent than ever in the interfaces between diverse world-views, not only at local and national levels but, increasingly, at the global level as well. Religion and religiosity are potent cultural resources that undergo continuous reinvention by particular actors within relationships of power. This work looks closely at the Malaysian following of the contemporary Indian godman Sathya Sai Baba, a neo-Hindu guru famed for his miracle working. This religious innovation has broad appeal among non-Malays, but attempts to formalize and control it have evolved within a middle-class subsection of the Malaysian Indian community. This community makes subtle and ambiguous appeals for both spiritual unity and religious pluralism in response to the totalitarianism and intolerance of Malaysian modernity as it is wielded by the Malay-dominated government.Table of ContentsIntroduction: Modernity, Tolerance and Ambiguity; The Approach to Modernity in Malaysia; The Miracle Man and His Mission; The Sathya Sai Baba Organization in Malaysia; Showing Faith in the Nation; Healing Bodies of Thought; Embracing the Chinese; Power and Ambivalence; Bibliography; Index

Brill Brill's Encyclopedia of Hinduism. Volume Seven:
Book SynopsisKnut A. Jacobsen (Editor-in-Chief), University of Bergen, and Helene Basu, University of Münster, Angelika Malinar, University of Zürich, Vasudha Narayanan, University of Florida (Associate Editors) Brill’s Encyclopedia of Hinduism is part of the Handbook of Oriental Studies, Section 2: South Asia (HO2), which publishes scholarly reference works, bibliographies, and research tools pertaining to the political, economic, social, linguistic, and religious history of the Indian subcontinent. The six-volume Brill’s Encyclopedia of Hinduism -with first volume published in 2009 and to be completed in 2014 with Vol. 6- is a thematic encyclopedia, presenting the latest research on all the main aspects of the Hindu traditions in original essays written by the world’s foremost scholars on Hinduism. The Encyclopedia explicitly adopts an interdisciplinary and pluralistic approach, and in it, the term “Hinduism” is used critically in the knowledge that most of the traditions that today make up Hinduism are much older than the term itself. The Encyclopedia aims at a balanced and even-handed view of Hinduism, recognizing the tensions inherent in the academic examination of Hinduism. It emphasizes that Hinduism is a conglomerate of regional religious traditions and at the same time a global world religion. Hinduism is also both an ancient historical tradition and a living tradition flourishing in the contemporary world. It is an oral tradition, yet one with a huge number of sacred texts at its basis. Hinduism is both a religious identity and an object of academic scholarship. Illustrated with maps and photographs, Brill’s Encyclopedia presents the learned philosophical and theological traditions of Hinduism as well as its many folk traditions. Covering the spread of Hinduism over the last two hundred years to all the continents as well as the interaction of Hinduism with other religions, it also portrays the various responses of Hindu traditions to a number of contemporary issues of great relevance today, such as feminism, human rights, egalitarianism, bioethics, and so on. On the whole, the editors and the competent project team at Brill have coped admirably with the challenges, preparing an impressive list of entries, enlisting a competent team of (as many as 155) accomplished scholars, applying a uniform style to the encyclopedia, achieving consistency in the use of diacritics and weaving the diverse contributions into a coherent whole.' Jan Filipský, Oriental Institute, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Oriental Archive 81 (2013) 'As a product of in-depth and critical scholarship, Brill's Encyclopedia of HInduism is unparalleled in its breadth, depth and reliability. As in every scholarly undertaking, especially an interdisciplinary one touching upon Indology, religious studies, history, anthropology, sociology, art history, and other academic disciplines, there is always ample scope for improvement and further research. But suffice it to say that, as of now, together with the last two substantial volumes already in print, the present compendium may be taken as a dernier cri in critical scholarship, a veritable jñānavāpi (well of knowledge) for future generations to replenish.' Peeters Publishers Dying Death and Bereavement in a British
Book SynopsisThis study is an exploration of the religious beliefs, attitudes, traditions and rituals of a British hindu community, with respect to dying, death and bereavement. The observations of this community are compared with material obtained during three months of fieldwork in India and ethnographic sources. The primary focus of this study is on individual Hindus, seen in the context of their family and community: their beliefs, experiences and perceptions about death, and their reactions to the changes that take place. It also examines the process of adaptation and change in the death rituals and the role of the pandits in maintaining continuity. The first part of this study sets the context, introducing the issues confronting Hindus facing death and bereavement in Britain. It discusses theoretical issues in a multicultural study as well as beliefs about death and life after death. In the second part, Hindu ritual practices around death are explored, using a model of nine stages from preparation for death to the final post-mortem and annual ancestral rituals. The third part explores the social and psychological dimensions of death, grief and mourning, the implications of death in hospital and the professional and bureaucratic issues which affect Hindu deaths in Britain. The social aspects of mourning are discussed, with reference to pollution, the role of the family and community, young people and widows. Finally, the author examines the implications of social changes for British Hindus and for those who are involved with them in the caring professions.

HarperCollins India Shiva to Shankara: Giving Form to the Formless
Book SynopsisWe live in times where people have extreme views. On the one hand, there are scholars who describe Shiva''s linga literally as a phallus, and see all metaphoric meaning as embarrassed apology of the uneducated. On the other hand, we have puritanical Hindus who want to strip the Shiva linga of all sexual meaning and sanitize Shiva''s lore. In both cases, a symbol is being reduced to a sign. In Shiva to Shankara, Devdutt Pattanaik, India''s leading mythologist, seeks to bridge the gap.
