Brill Education and Leadership
Book SynopsisThis truly international book brings together authors from different regions of the world including North America, South Africa, Europe, Iran and Russia all of whom are concerned with aspects of the challenges involved in the expansion of higher education, both in student numbers and areas of study. Some are concerned about the loss of guiding principles which steered university education for centuries. The traditional purposes of higher education have come under such pressure that we have achieved “conflicting models of the university” (Claes) and “ambiguity” in regard to teaching and research (Simons et al). For others, the problems are at a different stage. Contributions from South Africa look at three challenges: Can we provide enough places in higher education? How do we deal with institutional mergers? How do we make staff development effective in a situation in which English is the first language of less than five percent of the staff? Young scholars in Russian regions face formidable hurdles in achieving academic careers while the best law graduates in Canada are faced with the ethical dilemma of personal career advancement or social justice (Topsakal). The problem of integrating nursing into a traditional Irish university is reviewed by Grant while the role of a university in regional development is addressed from a Greek perspective by Papaelias et al. The comparative international approach features in research into teacher job satisfaction in India and Iran while McMahon reviews the impact of the Bologna Process.Table of ContentsIntroduction Educational Issues Tom CLAES: Conflicting Models of the University: Traditionalist And Innovative Views and the Semantic Horizon of ‘The University’ Jayne R. Book SynopsisThis book is an apologia for the rooted intellectual against the disdainful condescension of the cosmopolitan intellectual—an apology in the Socratic sense of the word. It reflects the author’s Texas rootedness unapologetically and offers a polemical but thoughtful indictment of the intellectual prejudice against rootedness; but it is ultimately about the universal human struggle with origins.Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Foreword Acknowledgments and Disclaimers Introduction: Attempts: Philosophy as Essay One: A Good Intellectual Is Hard to Find Two: Mind Forg'd Manacles Three: Running and Being Four: The Queen's English, or That Awful English Language Five: Wine of Wyoming Six: Wit and the Art of Conversation Seven: The Fish Eight: “A Minor Regional Novelist” Nine: Wana Ten: Culture Vultures Eleven: Centennial Twelve: The Sweet Science and the Competitive Spirit Thirteen: The Halfe Ars'd Angler Fourteen: Blood Sports and Haute Cuisine Fifteen: Bread and Wine Sixteen: Idols of the Academic Theater Seventeen: Westward I Go Free Bibliograpy About the Author Index

Brill Frontiers in Higher Education
Book SynopsisThis latest edited book in the Idea of Education series, entitled ‘Frontiers in Higher Education’, began its journey as working papers from an Inter-Disciplinary.Net conference held in Budapest, Hungary in 2008. The conference was fortunate in that all its delegates were committed to critical engagement and as a result the quality and quantity of interaction between attendees was high. Some extremely important issues were raised and engaged with collectively. Subsequent to the event in Budapest the editors actively encouraged an electronically-mediated on-going debate about the themes discussed in Budapest. As a result all papers selected for this volume have undergone major transformation since first aired at the conference. In making the final selection the editors were desirous of a work that had distinct clearly-recognisable themes where complementation and relevance was self-evident. There are three main thematic sections in this volume: ‘Sociocultural Frontiers of Higher Education’ containing four chapters; ‘Limitations and Aspirations of the Academy’ comprising the six chapters, and two innovative final chapters presenting and reflecting on aspects of the ‘Technological Frontiers of Higher Education.’ This book is aimed at researchers of topics such as the future of higher education, globalisation and cultural and social frontiers of higher education and related fields.Table of ContentsTom Claes and David Seth Preston: Introduction Sociocultural Frontiers of Higher Education Seth A. Wageningen Academic Publishers Learning to make change: Developing innovation competence for recreating the African university of the 21st century
Book SynopsisUniversities represent the highest level of education, yet they are notoriously slow in responding to a rapidly changing world. Deeply entrenched elitism and routines, a continued emphasis on reproductive learning, and the continued dominance of disciplinary thinking, have, in many instances, created bastions of educational conservatism, unable to contribute meaningfully to the development of people, businesses and communities within a finite global ecosystem. This book focuses on an African university's efforts to become more innovative and responsive to community needs and the challenges posed by sustainability. A central concept is innovation competence as a pre-requisite for transforming learning, research and consultancy. Making change in society requires innovation competences over and above disciplinary expertise and these competences have to be learnt by both staff and students. Kibwika not only shows that it is imperative that African universities re-orient their programmes to produce graduates capable of enhancing innovation and social change in the community, he also provides a number of solid stepping stones for capacity building and curriculum development that, in time, will result in an innovative university able to contribute to a world that is more sustainable than the one currently in prospect.

Springer Economics of Higher Education: Background,
Book SynopsisThis book examines the many ways in which economic concepts, theories and models can be used to examine issues in higher education. The topics explored in the book include how students make college-going decisions, the payoffs to students and society from going to college, markets for higher education services, demand and supply in markets for higher education, why and how state and federal governments intervene in higher education markets, college and university revenues and expenditures, how institutions use net-pricing strategies and non-price product-differentiation strategies to pursue their goals and to compete in higher education markets, as well as issues related to faculty labor markets. The book is written for both economists and non-economists who study higher education issues and provides readers with background information and thorough explanations and illustrations of key economic concepts. In addition to reviewing the contributions economists have made to the study of higher education, it also examines recent research in each of the major topical areas. The book is policy-focused and each chapter analyses how contemporary higher education policies affect the behaviour of students, faculty and/or institutions of higher education. "Toutkoushian and Paulsen attempted a daunting task: to write a book on the economics of higher education for non-economists that is also useful to economists. A book that could be used for reference and as a textbook for higher education classes in economics, finance, and policy. They accomplish this tough balancing act with stunning success in a large volume that will serve as the go-to place for anyone interested in the history and current thinking on the economics of higher education.” William E. Becker, Jr., Professor Emeritus of Economics, Indiana UniversityTrade Review“A very useful sourcebook for educational researchers with interest in economics and finance in higher education. The book is systematic and comprehensive in its treatment of the key concepts, principles, and theories and in its coverage of the topics and policy issues. … book can be a good choice for graduate courses in economics and finance in higher education. It can also be an excellent handbook for faculty and graduate students in the fields of higher education and public policy.” (Shouping Hu, The Journal of Higher Education, January, 2017)Table of ContentsIntroduction.- 1. Springer Verlag, Singapore Strategic Human Resource Management in Higher Education: Roadmap for Indian Institutions
Book SynopsisThis book explores the practices and policies of human resource management (HRM) in higher education institutions (HEI), while also analyzing the governance and structural challenges. It explains the assessment of university as an organization, outlining the distinction between universities and firms from an HRM point of view by analysing various objectives, parameters and outcomes. The book broadly probes the relevance of HRM systems in HEIs in India and their potential impact. It also examines whether existing HRM practices and policies in HEIs in India drive motivation and enable employees to perform their functions to achieve the highest possible levels of excellence. It explores whether the enhanced motivation of employees consistently impacts students, their placements, progress to higher education, and quality teaching and research output. To strengthen the research output, to better understand the functioning of HRM practices in foreign HEIs and for comparative reasons, the book also studies HEIs in the United States against a diverse set of HEIs in India. It concludes by highlighting the impact of India’s National Education Policy 2020 and its scope to transform and professionalise the higher education system in the country. The book is indispensable for researchers in education management and policy studies and those in governing positions in higher education institutions. It is also a valuable resource for regulatory and government bodies, and policy-formulating think tanks in South Asia which have a similar education system as India.Table of Contents
