  • Why Breastfeeding Matters

Pinter & Martin Ltd. Why Breastfeeding Matters

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAll babies need feeding – and yet in modern life something so simple has become an issue fraught with difficulty for new parents. Society, politics and culture have worked together to create a situation where parents are presented with a ‘choice’ – breast or bottle? Such a ‘choice’ implies that the product (the milk) and the method of delivery (breast or bottle) are equal, but is this true? In many countries bottle-feeding has become so common that it is never questioned, and indeed is often seen as the answer to parents’ problems. Not sleeping at night? Not enough milk? Mum needs medication? Reach for the formula. Every day women are told by their friends, family and even their doctors that bottle-feeding is the answer. Yet research shows that most mothers want to breastfeed, and that babies who are not breastfed are at increased risk of illness. Why Breastfeeding Matters tackles some of these issues head-on, in a frank discussion intended to help parents and others navigate the world of infant feeding. It is neither preachy nor a ‘how-to’ manual; it outlines some of the reasons why breastfeeding matters, to mothers and their babies, and explains how these issues can affect the way in which mothers use bottles and formula if they need to. Drawing on research, and the author’s experience as a lactation consultant, it is essential reading for anyone wondering about how to feed their new baby.Trade ReviewEvery Midwife, Health Visitor & GP should be given this book! "Why Breastfeeding Matters" is about much more than its title implies. It's almost poetic in its descriptive nature to help readers visualise what is being described, which alongside the critical evaluation of current research, results in a fantastic, unique approach to the subject of infant feeding. This is not a boring run of the mill breastfeeding book, it's a really easy read which is extremely well written and well referenced. It will be compulsory reading for all my students and strongly recommended for all new mums, peer supporters and health professionals involved in the care and feeding of babies. -- Debra Abbas, infant feeding coordinator, nurse (GN), midwife (RM) & International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

Book SynopsisThe Politics of Breastfeeding, first published in 1988, remains a hugely important book. It exposes infant feeding as one of the most important global public health issues of our time, and describes how big business and vested interests influence the intimate relationship between mothers and their babies to the detriment of all, rich or poor, in the West or in the developing world. In Why the Politics of Breastfeeding Matter, the central ideas of The Politics of Breastfeeding are distilled into a concise form, making it the perfect introduction to understanding the complex forces that govern what many think of as a simple choice to breastfeed or not.

  • Why Babywearing Matters

Pinter & Martin Ltd. Why Babywearing Matters

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEvidence continues to increase on the practical and emotional benefits of babywearing, both to parents and their children. Among many other benefits, babywearing can help parents bond with a new baby, and facilitate both breastfeeding and the care of the baby’s older siblings. Babywearing also has benefits for society at large. Children are more securely emotionally attached and there is evidence of a link between the reduced incidence of postnatal depression and babywearing. In this new book, Rosie Knowles explores all these advantages, along with the practicalities of how to babywear and babywearing culture. She demonstrates how a clearer understanding of babywearing, and the attachment parenting philosophy as a whole, can ultimately lead to a happier, healthier society.

  • Why Postnatal Depression Matters

Pinter & Martin Ltd. Why Postnatal Depression Matters

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisYou have probably heard of postnatal depression, but did you know that most cases of postnatal depression actually began in pregnancy? And that most people who have antenatal depression have had depression in the past? And did you know that postnatal depression is not caused by women’s hormones gone awry; men are suffering postnatal and perinatal depression in larger and larger numbers too? This is why “postnatal depression” has now been renamed “perinatal depression”(‘peri’ means around, as in the word “perimeter”). Why is the seemingly joyful event of new parenthood causing so much suffering? Depression seems to be related to the stresses that a modern couple undertake when they have a baby. The lack of support, lack of celebration, overload of expectations, overwhelming responsibility, isolation, judgment, blaming by the media, tiredness, mixed messages, confusion, high expectations and lack of tender loving care serve to eventually break parents and their relationships. And when we break parents, we break a baby. Babies are our future, and if we break a baby, in the long run, we break society. Postnatal depression takes a high toll on society. Dealing effectively with perinatal depression is about valuing love, connection, calm and stillness, over and above productivity, achievement and acquisition.

Pinter & Martin Ltd. Why Pregnancy and Postnatal Exercise Matter

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAlthough women are often advised to exercise during pregnancy and after birth, there is little information available about the tremendous benefits of physical activity for both mother and baby, or what kinds of exercise are safe and appropriate. In Why Pregnancy and Postnatal Exercise Matter, Rehana Jawadwala, an exercise physiologist and perinatal yoga teacher, looks at the evidence for supporting physical activity in mothers, as well as how women’s physiology changes during pregnancy and after they give birth, answering in detail the questions that mothers and those supporting them may have.Trade Review"This book is a great read for anyone pregnant who wants to know more about exercise in pregnancy and the postnatal period. With frequent references to up-to-date evidence-based information, this is a great resource to have to hand! It also highlights the benefits of exercise leading up to birth and how exercise can benefit our bodies as it prepares for labour. There is great advice in the section on Exercise and Nutrition, giving clear explanations about diet and maintaining energy levels for exercise whilst being pregnant. Information that anyone who is pregnant and wants to continue exercising really wants to know! Plus it also covers information on gut health and microbiome. One of my favourite chapters was Preparing for the physicality of birth, with some great explanations on the body’s physical wellbeing. If you don't mind some medical terminology then it is a very enjoyable, informative book!" • When Breastfeeding Sucks: What you need to know

Pinter & Martin Ltd. When Breastfeeding Sucks: What you need to know

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMany mothers and those who support them do not know that they can experience negative emotions associated with breastfeeding. In modern society breastfeeding is often used – problematically – to exemplify myths about motherhood and maternal love, and is bound up with ideas of what makes a ‘good mother’. In this context nursing aversion and agitation – intense, distressing feelings that are experienced by the mother during breastfeeding – can be both unexpected and hugely upsetting, particularly when women may have already overcome significant challenges in order to breastfeed. In When Breastfeeding Sucks Zainab Yate examines what we know about this poorly understood aspect of infant feeding, in a carefully researched discussion that will be valuable for individual mothers who may be suffering, and the breastfeeding supporters who work to support them.Trade Review"Zainab’s book brings insight and nuance to this neglected area of the breastfeeding conversation." -- Milli Hill, author of The Positive Birth Book and Give Birth Like a Feminist"Without denying breastfeeding’s importance, this original book explores the reality that, for some women, it can be hard. An important book that will help not only mothers, but also those who care for them." -- Maureen Minchin, author of Milk Matters: Infant Feeding and Immune Disorder"Zainab has collated all the information — the biological and psychological and anthropological — together with stories, hints & tips and important resources, and it's a masterpiece! In this often strangely-divided world of infant feeding, she's the one brave enough to talk about how much it can SUCK, then gives tools to cope and overcome this without being told to simply stop! This is an absolute must-read for anyone in the peripartum industry to understand the true emotional complexities of breastfeeding, and to know how to provide better support. And for those going through it [to know] that they are not alone." -- Johanna Sargeant, IBCLC, Milk and Motherhood

This realistic, reassuring, and refreshing guide to sleep looks at sleep for both parents and children, and aims to empower and encourage parents to feel calm, confident and compassionate in their parenting. With practical and easily implementable ideas, and clear explanation of the many myths surrounding infant and baby sleep, this gentle and holistic guide is sure to allay many parents’ fears and help everyone in the family get the rest they need.Trade Review"Lyndseys approach to supporting parents with their baby and young child’s sleep is both warm, realistic and accessible, rooted in the current evidence base. Her work builds on the understanding of children’s needs and the science of sleep, whilst protecting and nurturing the bond and connection between the parent and child and all we know about the importance of loving relationships, babies and brain development whilst protecting the breastfeeding relationship." -- Zoe Faulkner IBCLC, Chair of LCGB"Few can do what Lyndsey does. She connects the science and the detail with the emotion and experience of new parenting and communicates it all in a way we can understand." -- Emma Pickett IBCLC and author of The Breast Book"Bless you, Lyndsey Hookway. You have done it again. Parents need solid, compassionate, and evidence based information when it comes to sleep and the health of their wee ones. Lyndsey Hookway knows how to deliver this information with an emphasis on relationships at the core of solving sleep issues. One of the best investments you will ever make for your family is to focus on health supportive activities like sleep and this book will help every family find the balance and tools necessary." -- Laurel Wilson IBCLC, TEDx Speaker, Author"Lyndsey's work is a breath of fresh air as it offers families evidence-based, non-judgmental, and practical advice that doesn't ignore that there are real people with real feelings who are struggling with their baby's sleep. Her compassion for their struggles is clear without compromising on the gentle nature of her advice and this helps set her apart." -- Tracy Cassels, PhD"In Let's talk about your new family's sleep Lyndsey is inviting new parents into an honest, heartfelt, compassionate conversation about the realities of infant and toddler sleep. Backed by science, this is an evidence-based resource that will empower parents to realise that they are the answer their baby is looking for. Why? Because, as Lyndsey so eloquently describes, nighttime parenting isn't about a set of strategies, it's about relationship. I'd encourage all parents to pick up this book with an open mind and a soft heart as you bravely emerge into the parent your baby needs you to be so that you can thrive alongside one other after the sun goes down." -- Tracy Gillett, writer and advocate

  • Breastfeeding Uncovered: Who really decides how

Pinter & Martin Ltd. Breastfeeding Uncovered: Who really decides how

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAcross the world mothers are urged to breastfeed, but in Western society many find it difficult. Those who stop can feel unhappy and demoralised – but why should such a desired, encouraged and biologically normal behaviour seem so challenging in reality? Breastfeeding Uncovered reveals how complex social and cultural messages work against new mothers, damaging the normal physiology of breastfeeding and making it seem unmanageable. Professor Amy Brown removes the focus from the mother and instead urges society to rethink its attitude towards breastfeeding and mothering, in order to support, encourage and protect mothers who want to breastfeed their babies. This book is for anyone who has ever struggled with breastfeeding, supported new mothers or just wondered what all the fuss is about. Most of all it is a must-read for anyone who has ever thought a breastfeeding mother should cover up, or feed her baby elsewhere. This new edition has been revised and updated with new case studies and links to research, plus a chapter on how the COVID-19 pandemic affected breastfeeding, so that it continues to be an up-to-date reflection of society’s attitudes to breastfeeding.

Pinter & Martin Ltd. Covid Babies: How pandemic health measures

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisAs the Covid-19 pandemic took hold, pregnancy and maternity services underwent a rapid transformation in an attempt to deal with transmission of the virus and the growing pressure on healthcare services. In a climate of fear, and with many unknowns about the virus and the risks to pregnant women and their babies, restrictions and hastily implemented policies often overrode years of work to improve maternity care, with devastating consequences for new families. Covid Babies: how pandemic health measures undermined pregnancy, birth and early parenting considers how policies put in place to protect us from the immediate threat of the virus ultimately had the unintended consequence of harming many who needed maternity and postnatal care. It highlights how hard-won gains, even when supported by overwhelming evidence, can be lost at the drop of a hat in a crisis. By learning the lessons of the pandemic – through close examination of the evidence base that is now emerging – Amy Brown shows how we can begin to move forward and unravel what has gone wrong. This is no easy task when our health services continue to face significant challenges, but one that is necessary to ensure the health and wellbeing of our new families and those who care for them.

  • Pinter & Martin Ltd. Closure: How the flagship Albany Midwifery

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn 1997 the Albany Midwifery Practice in Peckham, South London, negotiated a pioneering NHS contract with King’s College Hospital Trust. The Albany model of midwifery care was loved and respected not only by those who experienced it first-hand, but also by the wider midwifery profession. Founded to serve one of the most disadvantaged populations in London, its innovative approach led to improved outcomes for mothers and their babies. Why, then, was the practice suddenly shut down in 2009? Although it was widely acknowledged that the Albany model offered gold-standard care, the hospital trust claimed that since March 2006 this care had been ‘unsafe’. But both the data and the methodology used to condemn the practice were flawed, and the real reasons for the closure remained obscure. Despite extensive protests by mothers and families, midwives, and many high-profile supporters, the Albany was forced to close its doors and one of the midwives was subjected to a punitive investigation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which eventually found that there was no case to answer. Midwives and campaigners have long pushed for answers about what really happened to this flagship midwifery practice. In this damning assessment, based on years of careful research and interviews, the authors reveal how a hugely successful healthcare project was undermined and dismantled, to the detriment of mothers and babies, the wider community and the midwifery profession as a whole. As maternity services are scrutinised once more, and as the NHS struggles to implement its policy of continuity of midwifery care, this hard-hitting account of the fate of the Albany could not be more relevant or more timely.

Pinter & Martin Ltd. Can Humanity Survive Socialised Birth?

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the advent of agriculture and animal husbandry, the human population has multiplied by about one thousand in a ?demographic explosion?.However, in recent years, global fertility rates have begun to decrease significantly, and this is one reason to make a case for humans being becoming an endangered species. Many of the possible interpretations of this dramatic U-turn in the history of mankind may be found in modern ways of being born. For example, where caesarean rates are high, the average number of babies born per woman is very low. During the ultimate phase of the history of socialised birth, the hormonal dance that was previously essential is altered or eliminated.Today childbirth needs to be highly medicalised, after thousands of years of misunderstanding of the physiological processes involved. In a renewed scientific context, it may still be possible to rediscover the basic needs of labouring women and to try to ensure the future of our species. Is it too late to reach such a utopia? Michel Odent re-evaluates the comparative importance of recently acquired insights, to suggest links between data and ways of thinking from a great diversity of highly specialised disciplines.

Book Synopsis***2020 winner of the Christopher Bland Prize***"Beautifully crafted and written, filled with darkness and light, compelling... She fights addiction with honesty and humour. And, like her, [we] come away changed forever." Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, RSL Christopher Bland PrizeWhen Michele Kirsch's father is killed in a train crash, her mother gets the vapours and Michele gets extremely nervous. By her mid-teens, she has found salvation in valium. Her favourite words on the prescription sheet are "Take As Needed", which she interprets as Take All The Time.Later, as a wife and mother, she adds alcohol into the mix, and before long her life is spinning out of control. Leaving home "for the sake of the family", she takes the scenic route to rehab, redemption and reinvention. But this is no misery memoir. Clean is a darkly comic tale about the difficult choices we have to make as we navigate our lives. While working as a domestic cleaner in her 50s, Michele finds herself living vicariously through other people's messes, tidying her way through early sobriety. As the Duster of Large Things, she taps into her natural nosiness to reveal the absurdities of a seemingly banal job. This is a remarkable, powerful, and often unbearably funny story in which cleaning and getting clean lead to a strange and magical form of redemption.Trade ReviewRarely can a dark memoir have been so comic, or a comic memoir so dark. * Ysenda Maxtone Graham *

PICKED FOR ESQUIRE MAGAZINE'S BEST BOOKS OF 2022Best Books of 2022 - Picked by Readers - FINANCIAL TIMES When Freddy was 21 years old, his dad, a larger-than-life, successful TV producer, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a particularly aggressive type of brain cancer. In vivid snapshots, Freddy recalls the ups and downs of an impossible time - from the entertaining antics of a wine-gum tossing competition in a hospital ward, to the comi-tragedy of trying to decipher his father's muddled riddles as his speech disintegrates, to painful moments of regret and self-loathing as he squanders precious time.Don't Put Yourself on Toast is a bittersweet coming-of-age memoir which shows how the power of humour and laughter can provide, even in our darkest moments, sustenance, comfort and hope.Trade Review'A book close to my heart. His writing is fresh, never sugar-coated, and full of hope, and the love and comfort of family shines through the fear and desperation.' * The Tablet *'Comedy and tragedy exist side by side and, in this snappy memoir, Freddy Taylor conveys both the utter awfulness of his father's two-year descent from diagnosis to death, and the moments of hilarity the family had on the way.' -- Ysenda Maxtone Graham * Daily Mail *'Powerful snapshots of love and grief... Always sad, often uplifting, this will stay with you.' -- Phoebe Luckhurst * Evening Standard *'[The book] reads like a Beckettian tragi-comedy, dark and light in equal measure, paired with a coming-of-age spirit, all the while peering through a grim foreboding.' -- Kate Demolder * The Irish Independent *'Deeply moving and, surprisingly, very funny' -- JACK WHITEHALL'It is so engaging that I challenge anyone to read the book in more than one sitting.... This wonderful book charts a journey to some of the most beautiful and tranquil places on earth, and introduces us to people whose inner peace is a balm for our troubled times. I loved every page of it." - Nicholas HytnerSuffering from information overload, unable to sleep, Sarah Sands, former editor of the BBC's Today programme, has tried many different strategies to de-stress... only to reject them because, as she says, all too often they threaten to become an exercise in self-absorption.Inspired by the ruins of an ancient Cistercian abbey at the bottom of her Norfolk garden, she begins to research the lives of the monks who once resided there, and realises how much we may have to learn from monasticism.Renouncing the world, monks and nuns have acquired a hidden knowledge of how to live: they labour, they learn and they acquire 'the interior silence'. This book is a quest for that hidden knowledge - a pilgrimage to ten monasteries round the world. From a Coptic desert community in Egypt to a retreat in the Japanese mountains, we follow Sands as she identifies the common characteristics of monastic life and the wisdoms to be learned from them; and as she discovers, behind the cloistered walls, a clarity of mind and an unexpected capacity for solitude which enable her, after years of insomnia, to experience that elusive, dreamless sleep.Trade Review'Inspirational' * Daily Mail *'Sarah Sands has written about stillness with an eloquence that fizzes with vitality and wit. Inspired by the distinction Freud draws between the savage trauma of loss that occurs at the moment of death - grief - and the longer, unpredictable evolution of that loss into something that we call mourning, Rosenfeld finds herself dramatically rethinking the commonly held therapeutic idea of 'working through stages of grief'.This is a beautifully written meditation on what the investment of love means and how to find your own path after bereavement in order for life to continue.Trade Review'A breath-taking piece of work: tragic, terrifying and gripping as any novel, but ultimately, thanks to Rosenfeld's clear-eyed psychoanalytical honesty, also deeply consoling. [Montross’s] work in critical care psychiatric settings is the source material, and she launches from discussions of clients into larger questions about the nature of psychiatry and of mental health. Montross writes beautifully about the deep-seated illnesses that challenge therapist and psychiatrists.' * Daily Beast *'Montross exposes and explores the challenging, sometimes paradoxical role of psychiatric professionals… Her intriguing analysis is anchored by [a] humble and empathetic voice.' * Publishers Weekly *'Her poetic insights into how tragedies may be understood stir empathy, as Montross delves into the details of the history of her patients… This beautifully written book doesn’t offer answers but rather encourages compassion.' * Library Journal *'Montross writes of [her] encounters with a dramatic flair, ever empathetic but unsparing of occasional negative feelings, fears and frustrations... Book SynopsisAnxiety is the most prevalent psychiatric problem of our time. Decades of research have gone into probing its mysteries and developing treatments. But what if we’ve been thinking about fear and anxiety in the wrong way for all these years? This is the groundbreaking premise behind a wave of new research, led by the lab of renowned neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux. He believes that fear and anxiety are not innate states, simply waiting to be unleashed in the brain. Rather they are assembled experiences, and that has huge implications for patients. By mapping brain circuits, LeDoux explains the origins of anxiety disorders and reveals discoveries that can restore sufferers to normality. As impressive as it is timely, Anxious is a comprehensive survey of cutting-edge research revolutionising the way we treat our most pressing mental health issue.Trade Review'Impressive...detailed and deep...a great book about what fear and anxiety are...LeDoux is not afraid to take sides and positions...and you will start to think differently about what it means to be afraid'. * Times Higher Education *'Timely...fascinating' * Independent *'Wonderfully erudite, informative, and splendidly well written.' -- Daniel J. LeDoux has thrown down the gauntlet and set the standard. I wish all of us working on the problem luck trying to beat this analysis.' -- Michael Gazzaniga, Professor of Psychology, University of California, Santa Barbara, and author of Tales from Both Sides of the Brain, Human, and The Social Brain'Anxious is a profound, exciting and immensely useful work about one of our most troubling—and puzzling—emotions. Joseph LeDoux takes us behind the scenes of our own minds to show us not only how anxiety is constructed in the brain but how it can be deconstructed. This is neuroscience at its very best: helpful and hopeful without a hint of hyperbole.' -- Mark Epstein, M.D., author of Thoughts without a Thinker and The Trauma of Everyday Life'In this tour de force, LeDoux artfully guides the reader from the unconscious defensive system, through attention and memory, to the conscious experience of fear and anxiety. His traverse from the unconscious to the conscious experience of emotion is rich in scientific detail and yet exquisitely readable. LeDoux completes his masterpiece with provocative discussions of therapies for anxiety. This book is a fascinating revelation of the evolution in LeDoux’s own scientific thinking and in the field at large and is a must read for any student of learning, memory or emotion.' -- Michelle G. Troubador Publishing So, I've Got Parkinson's Disease

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTerry Rummins was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 10 years ago. So, I’ve Got Parkinson’s Disease is her story and covers her diagnosis and the progression of the condition – from the first warning tremors in her right hand to her day-to-day life now. When Terry was first diagnosed she didn’t know what to expect, veering wildly between visualising herself in a wheelchair within a few months and not really believing that there was anything wrong with her. Parkinson’s is a paradoxical disorder. ‘On’ and ‘Off’ are terms used to describe the regular and debilitating changes the Parkinson’s person can experience as a result of the interaction between symptoms and medication: from feeling well to the feeling of having aged twenty years in as many minutes. Terry stresses the importance of learning which symptoms are a result of the Parkinson’s itself, which are the results of taking particular drugs and which are as a result of environmental factors such as stress and diet. Terry has written this book in the hope that describing her experience will benefit others who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and to help them understand their expectations of how the condition may affect them. This is a candid story, told with humour and contains a positive message for those recently diagnosed and those close to them. It is also for anyone interested in what happens when life presents an unpleasant surprise.

Book Synopsis"Holly Grigg-Spall is fearless, and her courageous advocacy on behalf of women whose stories are too often silenced is a model for others trying to make positive change through health activism. Read the book and get inspired, get angry, and most importantly get information. Sweetening the Pill is exactly the thing needed to energize and mobilize this important women's health conversation." Laura Eldridge, author of In Our Control: The Complete Guide to Contraceptive Choices for Women Millions of healthy women take a powerful medication every day from their mid-teens to menopause - the Pill - but few know how this drug works or the potential side effects. Contrary to cultural myth, the birth-control pill impacts on every organ and function of the body, and yet most women do not even think of it as a drug. Depression, anxiety, paranoia, rage, panic attacks - just a few of the effects of the Pill on half of the over 80% of women who pop these tablets during their lifetimes. When the Pill was released, it was thought that women would not submit to taking a medication each day when they were not sick. Now the Pill is making women sick. However, there are a growing number of women looking for non-hormonal alternatives for preventing pregnancy. In a bid to spark the backlash against hormonal contraceptives, this book asks: Why can't we criticize the Pill?Trade ReviewHolly Grigg-Spall effectively melts the candy coating that obscures a simple truth: what we don't know, can indeed hurt us. Sweetening the Pill, equal parts personal journey, investigative journalism and feminist manifesto, cracks open the paternalist and corporate-driven ethos of self-improvement that undermines women's body literacy. We've got to demand better: more transparency, more options and more support for self-determined health care. Getting there begins with the kind of courageous inquiry Grigg-Spall inspires. -- Chris Bobel, associate professor of Women's Studies at University of Massachusetts Boston and author of New Blood: Third Wave Feminism and the Politic Holly Grigg-Spall is fearless, and her courageous advocacy on behalf of women whose stories are too often silenced is a model for others trying to make positive change through health activism. Read the book and get inspired, get angry, and most importantly get information. Sweetening the Pill is exactly the thing needed to energize and mobilize this important women's health conversation. -- Laura Eldridge, author of In Our Control: The Complete Guide to Contraceptive Choices for Women In Sweetening the Pill, Holly Grigg-Spall lays out the reality of hormonal contraception, and the ubiquitous political and commercial interests at play, with breathtaking precision. With most young women using these drugs, and providers cynically side-stepping informed consent and respectful consultation, this is a core and urgent issue of our time. If you are interested in teen girl and womens' health, and the wellbeing and evolution of society as a whole, read Sweetening the Pill. It's a riveting read and a powerful tool for change. -- Jane Bennett, co-author of The Pill: Are You Sure It's For You? and The Natural Fertility Management Contraception Kit and A Blessing Not A Curse We discovered in the '70s that the personal is political. Holly Grigg-Spall starts with her and other women's personal experiences with the Pill, then thoughtfully and thoroughly considers it scientifically, medically and philosophically to discover the political truth of the Pill. She shares strategies for finding new ways to control our fertility while regaining control of our destiny. Grigg-Spall's careful study on the Pill's effect on women's health is long, long overdue. We are so busy fighting to keep hormonal birth control available that we don't want to question what it is doing to our health and our lives. After reading this book, we can never see the Pill in the same way again. -- Carol Downer, veteran women's health activist and author of A New View of a Woman's Body, How to Stay Out of the Gynecologist's Office, A Woman's Book Oral contraceptives have done so much for so many, but when they don't stand up to scrutiny, women have a right to know more. Sweetening The Pill is a fascinating and up-to-the-minute account of the persistent questions around the effects of birth-control pills. Holly Grigg-Spall's cross-cultural perspective provides keen insights into the impact of the latest US health care initiatives.Consolidating personal testimonies, current thought and the controversy surrounding the widespread and prolonged use of oral contraception, this book is a toolkit for action. -- Chella Quint, writer, performer and educator at Adventures in Menstruating
