Book SynopsisAs the demand for blood and organs has grown, the value of a system that depends solely on gifts has been called into question. This title offers a fresh perspective on this ethical dilemma, by examining the social organization of blood and organ donation in Europe and the United States.Trade Review"In Last Best Gifts, Kieran Healy offers a timely, sophisticated, and original analysis of the complex organizational terrain of blood and organ donation. In doing so, he unpacks the crucial role that organizations and institutions play in creating the contexts for, and the meanings of, giving. His analysis suggests that the relationship between gifts and commodities, between giving and selling, is more complex than many scholars acknowledge." - Wendy Espeland, Northwestern University"

The University of Chicago Press Contesting Medical Confidentiality

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisMedical confidentiality is an essential cornerstone of effective public health systems, and for centuries societies have struggled to maintain the illusion of absolute privacy. In this age of health databases and increasing connectedness, however, the confidentiality of patient information is rapidly becoming a concern at the forefront of worldwide ethical and political debate. In Contesting Medical Confidentiality, Andreas-Holger Maehle travels back to the origins of this increasingly relevant issue. He offers the first comparative analysis of professional and public debates on medical confidentiality in the United States, Britain, and Germany during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when traditional medical secrecy first came under pressure from demands of disclosure in the name of public health. Maehle structures his study around three representative questions of the time that remain salient today: Do physicians have a privilege to refuse court orders to reveal confidential patient details? Is there a medical duty to report illegal procedures to the authorities? Should doctors breach confidentiality in order to prevent the spread of disease?Considering these debates through a unique historical perspective, Contesting Medical Confidentiality illuminates the ethical issues and potentially grave consequences that continue to stir up public debate.

Using the Saenger case as a means to reconsider cold war medical trials, this book examines the tensions at the heart of clinical studies of the time.Trade Review"What is truly original about Contested Medicine is that, by using the science studies approach applied to a specific historical case, Kutcher shows not only how ethics were constitutive of the shape of experimental work on cancer at its inception but how both of these things were mutually changed over time." - Christopher Lawrence, Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine, University College London"

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade Review"An important contribution to the historiography of illness and public health in early America. . . . Mutschler’s approach allows him to successfully balance what was representative of the era and what was distinctive about this particular location under his purview. Moreover, Mutschler’s style and emphasis on narrative makes the book accessible for those who do not specialize in the history of medicine. His work integrates illness with other forms of lived experience and demonstrates to his audience the merit of considering sickness in New England society and as an important lens for all historians of early America." * William and Mary Quarterly *“Mutschler examines in great detail, and with admirable skill, how sickness affected life in early Massachusetts. . . Mutschler is a fluid writer, with an admirable mastery of the relevant primary and secondary sources. . . Mutschler capably enlarges and deepens our understanding of daily life in New England and how the health safety net may have contracted rather than expanded over time as responsibility for health care moved away the individual and home to corporate and governmental resources.” * Social History of Medicine *“Families struggling to care for loved ones. Governments determined to cut back on medical costs. Populations quarantined to stop the spread of disease. These scenes from colonial New England are as current as today’s news. TheProvince of Affliction reveals a world surprisingly familiar, yet profoundly different from our own. In depicting this world, Mutschler is original, ambitious, masterful in his command of diverse sources, and a lively and fluent writer. He also forecasts the ideological origin of our current plight: the ethos of individualism that emerged in the wake of the Revolution, which built a new world of freedom and risk without a social safety net.” * Robert A. Gross, University of Connecticut *“Timely for its historical reflections on the challenges posed by disease, The Province of Affliction documents the resilient responses of early New Englanders to the regular occurrences of serious illness. Mutschler provides a poignant and pointed account of a world in which colonial settlers regularly stretched their capacities to tend to the sick and dying.” * Kathleen Brown, University of Pennsylvania *“The Province of Affliction provides a new lens into the experiences of New England colonists that broadens and deepens past scholarship. While New Englanders may have lived a long time, boy, did they suffer! Mutschler’s fascinating book is an eye-opening examination and raises a host of questions about how we measure and evaluate medical progress.” * David K. Rosner, Columbia University *“A work noteworthy for both what it has to teach about its designated historical period as well as about some of the most pressing challenges of that time that we continue to face today.” * The Well-Read Naturalist *Table of ContentsIntroductionOverviews 1. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis ambitious book examines how the American health care system must be further reformed to bring it closer in line with the ideals of a modern democracy, as well as how the ACA may change in the coming years. It suggests the next, natural step in the realization of health and well being as a fundamental human right.Trade ReviewAlmgren presents an extensively detailed and well-sourced story of the precursors to the Affordable Care Act of 2010, a "principled critique" of the ACA as it currently stands, and a proposal for the path (or paths?) forward. The book is beautifully written and a great read. -- Karla Washington, University of Missouri For the past two decades health scholars have documented the existence and prevalence of health disparities with a recent intentional shift away from additional documentation of health disparities to a focus on possible solutions for achieving health equity. Almgren's book argues that these micro level efforts may be largely in vain if we do not also address the larger systematic design issues. This book can be used to assess the multiple dimensions of equity in the US health care system, and to develop health care reforms to remedy where equity falls short. -- Colleen Grogan, University of Chicago Almgren's book on health reform could not be more timely. In the aftermath of the US presidential campaign, where the concept of a right to health care reemerged (as well as calls for complete abandonment of the Affordable Care Act), we need a principled, historically grounded, thoughtful, and yes, radical rethinking of the American dilemma of health care coverage. This book knits it all together and makes compelling sense of our confusing health care policy world. -- Edward F. Lawlor, Brown School, Washington University in St. Louis This clearly written book offers a concise review of the unique history of the U.S. health care and health insurance system, a well-reasoned presentation of the ethical basis of a universal right to health care, a comprehensive examination of the Affordable Care Act in the context of these ethical principals, and a map for the way forward, taking historical trajectory and ethical aspirations into account. The Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH)program focuseson the medical education of healthcare professionalswho arebuildingcommunities thatcantake care of themselves. The overwhelming success of the AMPATH program and its continuing vibrant legacy today are showcased through dozens of striking photographs, telling interviews, and revealing anecdotes and encounters. It focuses on four of the most innovative projects among the fifty that AMPATH oversees: a microfinance officer who organizes villagers, an oncology nurse who runs outreach clinics, a farm extension agent working in partnership with a multinational agriculture corporation to improve farm output, and a specTrade Review"AMPATH's growth from a groundbreaking response to HIV/AIDS to an even more impactful population health program is a remarkable feat, and the Kenyans and Americans who built the program are remarkable people. The program and the people both deserve a comprehensive, compelling book that tells their story. Fortunately for us, James Kelly has devoted his considerable reporting and photography skills to giving these inspiring health heroes—and we fortunate readers—a captivating book that meets the high standards set by this historic partnership."—Fran Quigley, Indiana University McKinney School of Law"This excellent book highlights the unique, successful and long-term partnership between two institutions—one Kenyan and one American. In contrast to many academic partnerships, the work of Indiana and Moi University is not based on data flows from Africa to the US, but rather demonstrates a model of international solidarity. The AMPATH collaboration's work to scale up HIV therapy and build health systems will serve to improve the resilience of health systems against the global threats of our time, from pandemics to climate change."—Joia S. Book SynopsisThe incredible story of David Gaus, who has dedicated his life to bringing modern health care and medicine to rural communities in Ecuador.Trade Review"The book succeeds in helping readers understand the lack of medical care in rural areas—the 'urban bias' of where doctors want to practice—and the unique geographic and social problems that complicate access to health care." —Mark Curnutte, Cincinnati Enquirer, author of A Promise in Haiti"Long Road from Quito: Transforming Health Care in Rural Latin America is well written and captures the attention of the reader; the many examples provide a colorful and vivid narrative that makes this book a page turner. Tony Hiss knows how to tell a story, and the reader gets an excellent in-depth impression of the context based on the vivid descriptions provided." —Clemens Sedmak, author of A Church of the Poor"If you are lucky, a few times in life you will come across a person who is able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. It is even rarer still to find in such a leader a genuine sense of humility and a depth of soul that radiates joy and laughter. I know you will enjoy and be inspired by this story of a modern-day man who is as holy as he is innovative, who is as determined as he is fun, and who is both visionary and focused on the set of eyes before him at any given moment." —Lou Nanni, from the foreword“[David] Gaus’ journey from an accounting undergraduate to a medical doctor hailed as a hero in Ecuador, with hesburgh as inspiration and partner, is recounted in the new book, Long Road from Quito, by journalist Tony Hiss.” —Notre Dame Magazine"Long Road from Quito by Tony Hiss is an extraordinary combination of biography and history . . . an especially and unreservedly recommended addition to community and academic library Contemporary American Biography collections in general, and Latin American Medical History supplemental studies reading lists in particular. . . . With a charming conversational style that's a pleasure to read, Hiss shows . . . Gaus's vision and determination . . . in a story with equal parts interest for Notre Dame readers, health practitioners, medical anthropologists, Latin American students and scholars, and the general public." —John Taylor, Midwest Book Review"[This] narrative has the contents, structure, and timing to engage the reader with the details of the philosophy, biography, and determination of David Gaus, a young accountant who took a charity trip to Quito in 1984. His trip ended up transforming him into a physician for the poor, a hospital builder, and an educator in rural Ecuador." —Choice“Long Road from Quito also depicts a challenge far greater than geographic isolation—namely, how rural populations differ from urban populations in their perception of health and disease. Such insights are essential not just in Ecuador but in much of the world, including industrialized nations.” —American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene"For family physicians with an interest in global health, rural medicine, and tropical disease, plus an appreciation for a well-told story, this book is a great read. Thoroughly entertaining while still conveying a message about how global health can be done well and responsibly, the book gives a sense of hope and energy." —Family Medicine

  • White Coat Clenched Fist

LUP - University of Michigan Press White Coat Clenched Fist

Book SynopsisIn the sixties, Fitzhugh Mullan was an activist in the civil rights struggle. While in medical school, Mullan was shocked by gaps in what the students learned, and the lack of humanity in the classroom. This book charts the state of medical school and practices in the 1960s and 70s.Trade ReviewThis reissue of White Coast, Clenched Fist, the marvelous memoir depicting the shaping of a doctor in the seething sixties, delivers valuable lessons to a twenty-first century audience. If it is to be fixed, our chaotic system of health care must recapture Fitzhugh Mullan's altruism and commitment to social justice. His remarkable journey, both personal and professional, takes the reader through far reaches of community and government. The reward: a deeper understanding of health issues and solutions. - Studs Terkel, author of Hard Times, Working, Race, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Good War

Book SynopsisExamining the cultural politics of public health and Chinese immigrants in San Francisco, this text looks at the history of racial formation in the US by focusing on the development of public health bureaucracies.Trade Review"This striking book asks provocative questions and seamlessly weaves together narratives central to the history of race, Asian Americans, urban politics, public health, and citizenship. . . . Using an array of sources and theoretical frameworks, Contagious Divides is an extremely important, original, and engaging book. It offers us a striking new vantage point from which to view racial formation, the role of the state, and public health in marking exclusion and inclusion in the United States." * Journal of American History *"Deftly threading several potent concepts pertaining to modernity, liberal democracy, and citizenship, Shah's monograph stakes out an original, highly imaginative, and rewarding approach to apprehending both the microcosm of San Francisco's Chinatown and the history of Chinese and Chinese Americans in the United States." * H-Net *"Through his study of the interconnections between epidemics, public health, and the Chinese community, Nayan Shah provides new insights into the reasons for both this repulsion and fascination. Contagious Divides, which covers nearly a century in the history of the city’s Chinese community, allows the reader to assess the emergence of the Chinese as a medical threat as well as their gradual transformation into model citizens. . . . This informative book illuminates an important chapter in the history of American culture. . . . Shah's work reflects meticulous scholarship." * Journal of the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences *"The author draws on an impressive variety of sources, including English-language newspapers, published rumors, pictures, letters, poems, oral histories, and public health reports. Moreover, Shah adroitly engages with queer and postcolonial theories and with histories of public health in Africa and Asia." * Isis *"Contagious Divides is an important and interesting book, and (beyond the obvious audiences) will be useful to readers interested in discourses of science and public policy, and to those interested in racialized constructions of the body, the family, or the home." * Journal of American Culture *"An interesting development in writing the history of modern public health has recently emerged: it is being linked closely to the history of racial thought and administration. . . . Nayan Shah’s Contagious Divides is the first book-length study of the idea, and a fine study it is. . . . One can expect Contagious Divides to be noticed within American historiography. Within the history of public health it will be a fine example of the dovetailing of several previously disparate literatures" * Metascience *"Shah's history of race and epidemics in San Francisco offers us constructive criticism for present and future wars on disease and a cautionary tale of hope for tolerance." * American Quarterly *Table of ContentsCONTENTS List of Illustrations Acknowledgments Introduction: Public Health, Race, and Citizenship 1. • Pills and the Public Purse

University of California Press Pills and the Public Purse

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIf national health insurance becomes a reality, what options should be considered for the coverage of prescription drugs? The authorswhose Pills, Profits, and Politics has had a dramatic effect on physicians, pharmacists, patients, and the drug industry as well as on federal and state legislatorsinsist that the major objective must be the best possible health care. But holding down costs to patients and taxpayers must also be a goal. To complicate matters further, the advantage of each likely optionincluding price controls, the use of formularies, drug utilization review, patient cost-sharing, and the use of low-cost, generic-name productsis offset by a disadvantage, even a danger. If drug prices are slashed too much, the industry will lose many of its incentives to develop better drugs for the future. Particular attention is focused on the so-called drug lagthe lengthy delays in licensing of new drugs, even after they have been used with apparently good results in other countries. Pills and the Public Purse also addresses the seldom-appreciated fact that investing tax dollars in needed drugs may save taxpayers in the long run by minimizing unnecessary physician visits and hospitalization. Pills and the Public Purse challenges Congress and such agencies as the Food and Drug Administration and the Health Care Financing Administration to enact policies that put the interests of the public before those of government, industry, physicians, and pharmacists. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact.
