  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Contemporary PhysicianAuthors

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the phenomenon of physician-authors. Focusing on the books that contemporary doctors write--the stories that they tell--with contributors critically engaging their work. A selection of original chapters from leading scholars in medical and health humanities analyze the literary output of doctors, including Oliver Sacks, Danielle Ofri, Atul Gawande, Louise Aronson, Siddhartha Mukherjee, and Abraham Verghese. Discussing issues of moral meaning in the works of contemporary doctor-writers, from memoir to poetry, this collection reflects some of the diversity of medicine today. A key reference for all students and scholars of medical and health humanities, the book will be especially useful for those interested in the relationship between literature and practising medicine.Trade Review"Contemporary Physicians-Authors demonstrates that most of today's writers speak in a self-aware, reflective voice that keeps them close to the ground, while they also retain the flexibility to take a more bird's-eye view to comment, report, and advocate. The book's primary audience is academic (e.g., students and professors of medical humanities), but anyone who has read a few or more of these authors is likely to find something of interest and perhaps discover a brand-new author to investigate."-Jack Coulehan, Journal of Medical HumanitiesTable of ContentsIntroduction. Book SynopsisThis new edition of Sarah Franklin's classic monograph on the development of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) includes two entirely new chapters reflecting on the relevance of the book's findings in the context of the past two decades and providing a state-of-the-art' review of the field today.Over the past 25 years, both the assisted conception industry and the academic field of reproductive studies have grown enormously. IVF, in particular, is belatedly becoming recognised as one of the most influential technologies of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, with a far-reaching set of implications that have to date been underestimated, understudied and under-reported. This pioneering text was the first to explore the emergence of commercial IVF in the United Kingdom, where the technique was originally developed. During the 1980s, the British Parliament devised a unique system of comprehensive national regulation of assisted reproduction amidst fractious public and media Table of ContentsIntroduction to the 1st edition. Book SynopsisThis collection brings together cutting-edge research on the history of embodiment, health and schooling in an international context. The book distinguishes a set of educational technologies, schooling practices and school-based public health programmes that organise and influence the bodies of children and young people, defining the curriculum of the body.Taking a historical approach, with a focus on the period in which mass schooling became an international phenomenon, the book is organised according to four major themes. The first positions the school as a modern clinical space, followed by the second that explores programmes and curricula which influence the discipline of and care for the body. The third section examines the role of the built environment on the organisation and experience of children's bodies, and the final section outlines the pedagogies, rules and routines that determine how the body is treated and experienced in school.International and multidisTable of ContentsIntroduction: Bodies, health and schoolingKellie Burns and Helen ProctorPart 1: Clinical practices1. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis assessment of Britain's influential 14 day rule governing embryo research explores how and why it became the de facto global standard for research into human fertilisation and embryology, arguing that its influence and stability offers valuable lessons for successful biological translation. One of the most important features of the 14 day rule, the authors claim, is its reliance on sociological as well as ethical, legislative, regulatory and scientific principles. The careful integration of  social expectations and perceptions, as well as sociological definitions of the law and morality, into the development of a robust legislative infrastructure of human fertilisation and embryology', enabled what has come to be known as the Warnock Consensus a solid and enduring public acceptance that has enabled successive parliamentary approval for controversial areas of scientific research in the UK, such as stem cell research and mitochondrial donation, for

Book SynopsisThis important book draws together new research and theories about bereavement, on the one hand, and men and masculinities on the other, to increase our understanding of men's experience of loss and contribute towards improving support services for men following bereavement.Bereavement and loss are unavoidable events in life and can be challenging experiences for anyone, regardless of gender. However, in contemporary western cultures, men's experience of bereavement continues to be framed by socially constructed ideas surrounding masculinity, which dictate that men must be stoic following a loss, with grief manifesting in either anger or despair. Men who do not grieve in accepted masculine' ways can feel judged, alienated or disenfranchised. This interdisciplinary and interprofessional collection presents theoretical analysis, reports of research findings, reviews of support and interventions, and a wealth of personal accounts. Written in an engaging and accessible style, with multiple student-friendly features, it integrates and contextualizes recent research in medical sociology and public health to introduce students to a wide range of issues affecting health, healing, and health care today. This new edition links information on COVID-19 into each chapter, providing students with timely and familiar examples to deepen their understanding of the many social dimensions of health care, such as the social history of medicine, social epidemiology, social stress, health and illness behavior, the medical profession, nurses and allied health workers, complementary and alternative medicine, the physician-patient relationship, medical ethics, and the financing and organization oTrade Review “This new edition is a welcome arrival for all of us concerned with the issues of equality and inclusion in the field of medical sociology. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Poverty and Social Inequality in Wales

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOriginally published in 1980, this book presents a detailed empirical analysis of the key dimensions of inequality and poverty in Wales, discussing such aspects as the distribution of income and wealth, the housing situation, the functioning of the NHS and urban deprivation. Wales emerges as a country severely disadvantaged in relation to much of the rest of Britain. Moreover, the extent of inequalities within Wales is also striking. In the second part of the book each contributor applies a particular theoretical perspective to an aspect of the situation discussed in the first part. The perspectives adopted are diverse, ranging from Keynesianism, through dual labour markets to dependency theory and Marxist analysis. Each essay emphasises the importance of locating our understanding of poverty and social inequality in the context of the patterns of economic development in Wales and in the functioning of the State apparatus.

Book SynopsisThis book examines how the COVID-19 pandemic has engendered a new and challenging environment in which borders drawn around people, places, and social structures have hardened and new ones have emerged.Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, borders closed or became unwelcoming at the international, national, sub-national, and local levels. Debate persists as to whether those countries and territories that tightly managed their borders, like New Zealand, Australia, or Hong Kong, got it right' compared to those that did not. Without doubt, a majority of those who suffered and died throughout the pandemic have been those from vulnerable populations. Yet on the other hand, efforts taken to manage the spread of the disease, such as through border management, have also disproportionately affected those who are most vulnerable. How then is the right balance to be struck, acknowledging, too, the economic and other imperatives that may dissuade governments from taking public healthTable of ContentsI. INTRODUCTION 1. The author argues that, in addition to physical and intellectual disabilities, there are volitional disabilities disabilities of the will and that addiction is best understood as a species of volitional disability. This theory serves to illuminate long-standing philosophical and psychological perplexities about addiction and addictive motivation. It articulates a normative framework within which to understand prohibition, harm reduction, and other strategies that aim to address addiction. The argument of this book is that these should ultimately be evaluated in terms of reasonable accommodations for addicted people and that the priority of addiction policy should be the provision of such accommodations. What makes this book distinctive is that it understands addiction as a fundamentally political problem, an understanding that is suggested by standard legal app

Book SynopsisWomen, Girls, and Addiction is the first book on the efficacy of treatment approaches and interventions that are tailored to working with addicted women, and the first publication of any kind to provide a feminist approach to understanding addiction from the female perspective. Part one provides an overview of feminist theory and addiction counseling, followed by an historical look at women and addiction. Part two gives an in-depth look at the biological, psychological, and social factors. The final section presents a series of chapters spanning the lifespan, which each feature age-specific special issues, treatment strategies, interventions, and commonly encountered topics.Trade ReviewIn this landmark text, [the authors] have given a voice to a population and attention to a problem that heretofore has been overlooked, underserved, or inappropriately treated. Readers will find within these pages a wealth of ways to productively work with addicted women and girls. This book is both a first and a foremost contribution to the field of addiction. - Samuel T. Gladding, Wake Forest University, North Carolina, USA In a field with no shortage of literature on addiction focused on men and boys, Women, Girls, and Addiction is crucial to developing effective helping approaches with women and girls. Briggs and Pepperell deliver a thorough and informative research- and practice-based exploration of addiction from a feminist perspective that takes into account various sociological, cultural and contextual realities that converge and interact. - Hugh C. Crethar, Oklahoma State University, USAAs Cyndi Briggs and Jennifer Pepperell mention in this book, men and women differ on many levels, yet, for some reason, therapeutic treatment for them does not. This becomes problematic in treating females exhibiting addictive behaviors, as the current methods of treatment fail to focus on the relational and cultural aspects of women and the possible underlying reasons they suffer from substance or process addictions. Briggs and Pepperell offer empowering approaches of working with females across the lifespan in addictions treatment, taking into consideration the multifaceted contexts of women’s lives. A feminist perspective in working with women, particularly in addictions, has been needed in mental health! - Dr. Kelly L. Wester, University of North Carolina, USA"The authors...have taken a refreshing approach to addiction counseling by unabashedly asserting their feminist perspective and integrating it throughout their discussion of counseling issues...well written and organized. To be commended for covering a wide range of topics, often in novel ways. This book provides a useful overview of critical and timely issues related to understanding and treating women and girls with addictive disorders." - Christine Grella, PsycCRITIQUES, Vol. 55, Release 15Table of ContentsPreface. • Taylor & Francis Ltd How Music Helps in Music Therapy and Everyday Life

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhy is music so important to most of us? How does music help us both in our everyday lives, and in the more specialist context of music therapy? This book suggests a new way of approaching these topical questions, drawing from Ansdell''s long experience as a music therapist, and from the latest thinking on music in everyday life. Vibrant and moving examples from music therapy situations are twinned with the stories of ''ordinary'' people who describe how music helps them within their everyday lives. Together this complementary material leads Ansdell to present a new interdisciplinary framework showing how musical experiences can help all of us build and negotiate identities, make intimate non-verbal relationships, belong together in community, and find moments of transcendence and meaning. How Music Helps is not just a book about music therapy. It has the more ambitious aim to promote (from a music therapist''s perspective) a better understanding of ''music and change'' in our personTrade Review’How Music Helps represents a fascinating and thought-provoking investigation into the importance of music in the lives of people. With a philosophical orientation that will resonate with many of us who are advocates of the social-cultural impact of music and music making, Ansdell expertly weaves person-centered narratives and theoretical reflection. A first rate book from an author who is continuing the legacy of Nordoff and Robbins by always thinking musically within the music therapy context’. Lee Higgins, Boston University, USA ’With ecological sensitivity as subject and method, Gary Ansdell has produced an exquisite guide to the exploration of music’s help in music therapy and in everyday life. The question of how music helps is approached by elaborations of where and when music helps, for people in specific situations. This is food for our theoretical imagination and a stimulating invitation to interdisciplinary work.’ Brynjulf Stige, University of Bergen, Norway ’Ansdell's newest music therapy book is not a research study, a theory or practice handbook, or a textbook for music therapists. It is instead an eco-phenomenology of the benefits of music, exploring where, when, and how music helps people make connections in order to heal and grow ... Ansdell provides useful diagrams, an appendix about his method, and extensive scholarly apparatus. For anyone in the healing professions, this book demonstrates that all musicians can benefit from the experiences of healing that come from making music for themselves and with other people. ...Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals.’ Choice ’... a complex and thoroughly enriching, challenging and inspiring reading experience. I highly recommend this book to any music therapist, musician and music lover. Book SynopsisAddictive disorders are characterised by a division of the will, in which the addict is attracted both by a desire to continue the addictive behaviour and also by a desire to stop it. Academic perspectives on this predicament usually come from clinical and scientific standpoints, with the 'moral model' rejected as outmoded. But Christian theology has a long history of thinking and writing on such problems and offers insights which are helpful to scientific and ethical reflection upon the nature of addiction. Chris Cook reviews Christian theological and ethical reflection upon the problems of alcohol use and misuse, from biblical times until the present day. Drawing particularly upon the writings of St Paul the Apostle and Augustine of Hippo, a critical theological model of addiction is developed. Alcohol dependence is also viewed in the broader ethical perspective of the use and misuse of alcohol within communities.Trade ReviewReview of the hardback: 'With moral theologian, doctor, and then policy maker in mind, this book goes a good distance in making plausible how addiction can be better understood when the natural social sciences' are brought together with theology.' Journal of Addictive DiseasesReview of the hardback: '… the extra work required for non-theologians to engage fully with this book pays off in richer understanding of how the world's largest religion continues to grapple with one of the world's greatest public health challenges.' A Theology of the Use and Misuse of AlcoholReview of the hardback: '[Christopher Cook's] expertise with both theology and addiction psychiatry is reflected in this well-argued work, combining up-to-date psychiatry and public health with theology built on Biblical and patristic foundations.'
