Book SynopsisWe all have a body, but how does it impact upon our day to day life? This book sets out to explore how ordinary women, men and children talk about their bodies, through four central themes:-* physical and emotional bodies* illness and disability* gender* ageing.A coherent collection of such empirical research, The Body in Everyday Life provides an accessible introduction to the sociology of the body, a field previously dominated by theoretical or philosophical accounts.Trade Review'A fascinating and wide-ranging collection that is bound to engage the reader with new ideas and understandings.' - Laura Potts, Health Matters Issue 36 Spring 1999'A significant contribution to research relating to the embodied self as experienced in daily life and real world situations. It combines a wide range of research approaches, settings and topics and yet maintains a specific focus throughout' - Steve Robertson, Medical Sociology News vol 26 June 2000Table of ContentsJonathan Watson Health Education Board for Scotland, Edinburgh Bill Bytheway Stratford upon Avon, Julie Johnson Stratford upon Avon, Nick Watson University of Edinburgh, Alexandra Howson University of Edinburgh, Bethan Williams and Julie Barlow both at Coventry University, Sarah Cunningham-Burley University of Edinburgh, Eileen Fairhurst University of Manchester, Gillian Bendelow and Simon Williams both at University of Warwick, Mick Bloor University of Wales Cardiff, Mike Hepworth and Mike Featherstone University of Aberdeen, Deborah Lupton Charles Strut University, Bathurst, Australia, Professor Emily Martin Princeton University, USA.

Book SynopsisShortlisted for the BSA Sociology of Health and Illness Book Prize 2009Traditional distinctions between the experiences of women and men are breaking down and being reconfigured in new, more complex ways. The long-established life expectancy gap between men and women appears to be closing in many affluent societies. Many men appear to be far more âbody and health consciousâ than they ever were in the past and there are perceptible changes in womenâs âhealth behavioursâ, such as increases in cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption.Ellen Annandale provides a comprehensive and persuasive analysis of the contemporary social relations of gender and womenâs health, arguing that the once all important sex/gender distinction fosters an undue separation between the social and the biological whereas it is their interaction and flexibility that is important in the production of health and illness. New theoretical tools are needed in a world where the meaning anTrade Review"...include(s) nuanced and thought-provoking investigations of the body-versus-body-politic debate, the glorification of natural childbirth by 1970s-era radical feminists, the limitations of gender difference research, the deleterious impact of late capitalism on biomedicine, the pitfalls of postfeminism and the "body project," amd the weakening of health-oriented women's activism caused by identity politics and extreme individualism."-- Choice, July 2009'' Ellen Annandale’s book on women’s health and social change is a landmark text'' ''A beautifully written book, with flowing prose and some nice pieces of visual imagery that help bring the arguments expressed to life. Each of the seven chapters is well crafted as both a standalone piece of writing and as a building block for the book as a whole. The key points made and the arguments advanced in each chapter are well drawn out and summarised.'' ''This book will be equally rewarding for both those new to the area of gender and health, and those who have worked in it for some time. It represents both an excellent overview of work in this area and insightful analysis that contributes to long-running debates and suggests potentially fruitful directions for new work.''-- Sociology of Health & Illness, 2010Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book SynopsisThe profile of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has risen dramatically over the last decade and cancer patients represent its most prolific users. As a result, the NHS and UK cancer services are attempting to develop a wider range of therapeutic options for patients. Despite such developments, little is known about why cancer patients use CAM, its perceived benefits and the perspectives of the doctors and nurses involved. Drawing on extensive fieldwork in the UK, Therapeutic Pluralism includes over 120 interviews with cancer patients and professionals, plus innovative diary' data which, for the first time, detail the experiences of CAM users. It gives a systematic analysis of issues such as: The development of patient preferences and influences on decision making Expectations of CAM and interpretations of success' in cancer treatment The nature and importance of evidence' and effectiveness' for paTable of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgements List of Abbreviations Introduction Chapter 1: The dialectical tension between individuation and depersonalisation in cancer patients’ mediation of therapeutic options Chapter 2: The role of the Internet in cancer patients’ engagement with therapeutic options Chapter 3: Integrating CAM: A comparative analysis of hospice versus hospital medicine Chapter 4: Oncologists’ and specialist cancer nurses’ approaches to CAM and their impact on patient action Chapter 5: Exploring the temporal dimension in cancer patients’ experiences of non-biomedical therapeutics Chapter 6: The problematic nature of conflating use and advocacy in CAM integration Conclusion Bibliography Index
