  • Moods Emotions and Aging

Rowman & Littlefield Moods Emotions and Aging

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDespite the backlash against hormone replacement therapy, the depletion of natural hormones in the female body continues to be a problem for women at middle age and beyond. Remedying the problem has proved difficult for women and doctors who are unaware of, or reluctant to prescribe, bioidential hormonesthose that match identically the hormones made naturally in the human body. Moods, Emotions, and Aging: Hormones and the Mind Body Connection explains the vital link for women between hormones, mood, and wellness. It outlines the dramatic hormonal shifts that women undergo in the years before menopause, and presents an approach to combining bioidentical hormone therapy with nutrients to achieve mood balance during midlife and beyond. Phyllis Bronson explains the differences between synthetic and bioidentical hormones, and offers vignettes of women who have used bioidentical hormones to help them deal with the changes that accompany natural hormone loss. This is a groundbreaking book forTrade ReviewFor many years, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was standard practice for women with pre-menopausal symptoms. But HRT fell out of favor after studies showed that women on these drugs were developing decreased vascular function and slight increases in the incidence of breast cancer, stroke and dementia. According to “Moods, Emotions and Aging,” by Phyllis J. Bronson, a Colorado-based researcher who advises women with hormone-based mood disorders, this “set off a wave of misinformation.” Doctors began advising patients to stop HRT, and as a result, Bronson writes, “many women started feeling lousy without their hormones.” Bronson attributes HRT’s side effects to the fact that commonly prescribed hormones are synthetic. She argues that women would respond better to bioidentical hormones, which are chemically identical to the hormones women make in their bodies. Such hormones, Bronson says, can improve a woman’s mood and sense of self without the negative consequences of synthetic versions. Bronson builds her case using her own story and those of the women she advises who have had success with bioidentical hormone therapy. She breaks down what happens to various hormones as women age, and how they can affect sexuality, emotional well-being and overall health, particularly age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s. * The Instrumentalist *Dr. Bronson’s book will equip anyone facing the challenges of hormone deficiencies. Because she works with and writes about real people with serious mood and hormone imbalances, her readers may see themselves in the patient stories she tells and be inspired to take action to resolve their own health issues.... Another valuable facet of Dr. Bronson’s book is the discussions of how emotional issues can both provoke and be a result of hormone disarray. With the myriad of tools provided in this book, people who may have “lost” themselves emotionally may be able to find a pathway back. * Women's International Pharmacy *Geared for women over 50 years old, Moods, Emotions and Aging is a culmination of this “out-of-the-box” scientist’s discoveries about how to control moods through and after menopause.... Bronson’s scientific theories are based on her intimate knowledge of how women work. This book is not about finding “the fountain of youth” or anti-aging, she said, but rather it is about aging gracefully and without fear. Her techniques to achieve this goal are “a rational, soulful approach to how to work with the science” of biology. * Vail Daily *Not only does Dr. Bronson discuss diagnosis of hormonal disorders and the proper use of bioidentical hormones to treat them, she also adds in a missing dimension, the use of nutritional supplements to benefit brain chemistry.... The book should be required reading for any physician or health care professional thinking of starting a bioidentical hormone practice. -- Jeffrey Dach, MDMoods, Emotions, and Aging is a treasure trove of crucial information that will help women understand and choose the right hormone therapies for optimal health. -- Christian Northrup M.D.Real Women with real problems are getting real results and life changes with real hormones. Dr. Bronson is the “real” deal as she shares her guidance and experience with her readers. Her message emphasizes that the solution is not a magic elixir used by everyone but is an individualized approach developed by understanding and using the science of biochemistry. -- Carol Petersen, RPh, CNP, Women's International PharmacyDr. Bronson cleverly integrates evolving biochemical research with clinical practice, illuminating the path to optimal hormonal balance, for women of all ages. -- Chris Martinez, MD, American Board of Emergency MedicineDr. Phyllis Bronson is a voice to listen to in the area of mood and hormones. A researcher, clinician and speaker on the subject for many years, she has distilled her world of experience into this well-written user-friendly book that will educate and inspire you. It's a must-read for any woman-- and the man who cares about her. -- Hyla Cass, MD, author of 8 Weeks to Vibrant HealthThe research which Phyllis and I pursued here, resulting in a significant finding, involved the spectroscopic study of natural progesterone and the synthetic version developed by pharmaceutical companies. The structural differences between the natural and synthetic progesterone have significant implications for women’s health. The work which Phyllis has done generally in the chemical and physiological effects of bioidentical hormones has received wide attention through her numerous lectures and publications. -- Dwight Smith, Ph.D., former chancellor of the University of DenverTable of ContentsPreface and Introduction 1: In Defense of Estrogen 2: The Truth about Progesterone 3: Mood Chemistry 4: The Connection between Body Type and Hormones 5: Weaving the Web. Atlantic Books Endell Street: The Women Who Ran Britain’s

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA BBC RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEKWhen the First World War broke out, the suffragettes suspended their campaigning and joined the war effort. For pioneering suffragette doctors (and life partners) Flora Murray and Louisa Garrett Anderson that meant moving to France, where they set up two small military hospitals amidst fierce opposition. Yet their medical and organisational skills were so impressive that in 1915 Flora and Louisa were asked by the War Ministry to return to London and establish a new military hospital in a vast and derelict old workhouse in Covent Garden's Endell Street. That they did, creating a 573-bed hospital staffed from top to bottom by female surgeons, doctors and nurses, and developing entirely new techniques to deal with the horrific mortar and gas injuries suffered by British soldiers. Receiving 26,000 wounded men over the next four years, Flora and Louisa created such a caring atmosphere that soldiers begged to be sent to Endell Street. And then, following the end of the war and the Spanish Flu outbreak, the hospital was closed and Flora, Louisa and their staff were once again sidelined in the medical profession. The story of Endell Street provides both a keyhole view into the horrors and thrills of wartime London and a long-overdue tribute to the brilliance and bravery of an extraordinary group of women.Trade ReviewThis is the best book I've read about the First World War since Vera Brittain's Testament of Youth...With her impressively focused research and eye for human detail, Wendy Moore has produced an unforgettable microcosm...this fascinating book is a microcosm of early 20th-century Britain at its very best - and its very worst. -- Ysenda Maxtone Graham * The Times *Rarely is a book so important, so timely...vividly and meticulously written, Endell Street is a masterpiece to stretcher straight into a major film studio...[an] unmissable, thrilling read. -- Philippa Stockley * Evening Standard *Fascinating, carefully researched... Moore is superb at describing the medical advances that resulted in seven research papers by Endell Street doctors being published in The Lancet, among the first ever by women. * Guardian *Moore has scoured archives and diaries to produce a meticulously researched history of this extraordinary institution.... By writing this splendid book, Moore has ensured that the efforts of these pioneering women will never be forgotten. * Literary Review *Meticulously researched, written with élan and wit, Moore's account comes at just the right time... [it] reminds us that people can rise to an occasion, that the biggest advances - for medicine, for humanity - can come during the toughest times, as a result of the toughest times. It reminds us that great courage and great ingenuity are possible even when the world feels very dark. * New York Times *Informative, compelling and poignant, Endell Street is a forgotten story superbly told. * Times Literary Supplement *An absorbing and powerful narrative...Moore has an eye for detail that brings her story to life. * Wall Street Journal *Endell Street is an absolute delight. Wendy Moore has performed an incredible feat of historical detective work, and the result is a gripping account of courage and determination in the face of death. It is impossible not to love the suffragette surgeons as they fought for the wounded abroad and for women's rights at home. -- Amanda ForemanHow can a spectacular story like Endell Street just disappear? Luckily for us, it fell into the hands of one of our finest biographers. Wendy Moore's rich storyteller's voice has brought back the lives and achievements of these brave and brilliant women. -- Andrea Wulf, author of THE INVENTION OF NATUREThe story of the extraordinary women who ran the 'Suffragettes' Hospital' is visceral, timely, urgent and spellbinding. Wendy Moore's book is utterly involving and deeply thought-provoking, and all I can do is urge you to read it. -- Helen CastorFew authors write as colourfully and compellingly about the past as Wendy Moore. In her deft hands, the horrors of the First World War and the heroic efforts of the suffragette surgeons are conjured back to life. Meticulously researched and beautifully executed, Endell Street is an important book that shows Moore to be the masterful storyteller that she is. -- Lindsey Fitzharris, author of THE BUTCHERING ARTEndell Street is an extraordinary story, and beautifully told. -- Anita AnandTable of Contents1: A Good Feeling 2: A Sort of Holiday 3: Sunshine and Sweetness 4: Good God! Book SynopsisHysterectomy is one of the most prevalent surgeries world-wide in the female population. Nine out of every ten hysterectomies are performed for non-malignant conditions that are not life-threatening, but have a negative impact on quality of life. Indication policy must be revised as new treatments become available. Menorrhagia is the primary indication and it is not always a response to an anatomical disease; other common indications are genital prolapse and malignancy. New and improved alternatives are increasingly employed for this indication and are responsible for the fall in the rate of hysterectomies performed in the last decade. This book presents current research in the study of hysterectomies, including laparoscopic hysterectomy; beliefs, attitudes and psychological reactions to hysterectomy; myomectomy in place of hysterectomy; surgical management of congenital uterine abnormalities; and the hysterectomy crossroads.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisExploring a wide variety of visualizations of pregnancy and fetuses through 300 years of history, this timely volume offers a fresh look at the influential feminist concept of the "public fetus." Images of pregnant and fetal bodies are today visible everywhere. Through ultrasound screenings at maternity clinics, birth videos on social media platforms, or antiabortion propaganda, visualizations of pregnancy are available and accessible as never before. The origins of today's visual culture of pregnancy are often traced back to the 1960s, when Swedish photographer Lennart Nilsson's stunning photographs of human development were published in Life magazine and widely disseminated over the world. But the public display of pregnant and fetal bodies actually has a much longer and more complex history. In this timely book, a group of scholars from a range of disciplines explores this multifaceted history by highlighting visualizations of pregnant and fetal bodies in a variety of geographical and cultural contexts, spanning a period of more than 300 years. By reengaging with the crucial concept of the "public fetus," coined by feminist scholars in the 1980s and 1990s, the volume aims to revitalize the scholarly discussion on the visual culture of pregnancy and demonstrate the constructed nature of fetal images. Including chapters on a wide variety of representations in different media, such as wet specimen collections, papier-mâché models, sculpture, film, and photography, the book provides a much-needed argument against the widespread notion of the "universal" fetus. Book SynopsisThe complexity of ovary and fallopian tube pathology is striking, with dozens of tumor types. There is a greater appreciation now of the importance of hereditary cancer syndromes in ovarian and tubal malignancies, as two common autosomal dominant hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes include carcinomas of ovary or fallopian tube. This book is organized following the structure and terminology of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of Female Genital Tumors, 5th edition. It includes some new entities that have been described since that book's publication in 2020 and provides detailed discussion of differential diagnosis, relevant ancillary tests, and strategies to approach diagnosis. In addition, discussions of the underlying biology of these tumors, as it relates to their diagnosis, are also presented. This fascicle provides an opportunity for deeper reading and quiet reflection about the progress that has been made in our understanding of tumors of the ovary since the previous landmark edition was published in 1998, as well as a respect for the numerous challenges that remain. Despite the disease’s  prevalence, the average woman may suffer for a decade or more before receiving an accurate diagnosis. Once she does, she’s often given little more than a prescription for pain killers and a referral for the wrong kind of surgery. Beating Endo arms women with what has long been missing—even within the medical community—namely, cutting-edge knowledge of how the disease works and what the endo sufferer can do to take charge of her fight against it.Leading gynecologist and endometriosis specialist Dr. Iri

Book SynopsisIntegrative Women''s Health remains the only in-depth, broad-based reference on integrative women''s health written for health professionals. It helps providers address not only women''s reproductive health, but also conditions that manifest differently in women than in men, including cardiovascular disease, arthritis, HIV, depression, and cancer. The text presents the best evidence, in a clinically relevant manner, for the safe and effective use of herbs, vitamins, diet, and mind-body strategies alongside conventional medical treatments. As leading educators in integrative medicine, editors Dr. Maizes and Dr. Low Dog demonstrate how clinicians can implement their recommendations in practice, going beyond practical care to examine how to motivate patients, enhance a health history, and understand the spiritual dimensions of healing. In managing the patient, alternative therapies are never seen as substitutes for mainstream medical care, but always integrated into the overall regimen, and always subjected to the best available evidence. New to this second edition are chapters on environmental medicine and women''s reproduction, thyroid health, and lesbian health.Trade ReviewFeatured on Doody's Core Titles List for 2018The book is a beautiful synopsis of the medical options available to treat women's body/mind/spirit at all stages of life while incorporating the most current evidence in medicine. . . • Bioethics and Women Across the Life Span

Oxford University Press, USA Bioethics and Women Across the Life Span

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAll persons, while different from one another, have the same value: this is the author''s relatively uncontroversial starting point. Her end point is no uncontroversial: an ideal of justice as human flourishing, based on each person''s unique set of capabilities. Because the book''s focus is women''s health care, gender justice, a necessary component of justice, is central to examination of the issues. Classical pragmatists and feminist standpoint theorists are enlisted in support of a strategy by which gender justice is promoted. Two features of the book are unique: (1) the topics presented cover the entire life span of women, not just those related to reproduction; (2) a range of views about moral status are applied not only to fetuses but also to individuals already born. Attention to these features is intended to facilitate ethical consistency or moral integrity and respect for those who hold different moral views. While delineating and defending the book''s perspective, the first section provides an overview of bioethics, critiques prevalent approaches to bioethics and models of the physician-patient relationship, and sketches distinguishing aspects of women''s health care that are prevalently neglected. Positions about moral status are also present. The second section identifies topics that are indirectly as well as directly related to women''s health, such as domestic violence and caregiving. Brief cases illustrate variables relevant to each topic. Empirical and theoretical considerations follow each set of cases; these are intended to precipitate more expansive and critical examination of the issues raised. The last section is devoted to an egalitarian ideal that may be pursued through an ethic of virtue or supererogation rather than obligation. By embracing this ideal, according to the author, moral agents support a more demanding level of morality than guidelines or laws require.Trade Reviewone of the nice aspects of this book is the extensive body cases that Mahowald employs. While other works in medical ethics tend to either present an abundance of cases without any analysis or a small number of cases with extensive analysis, this book succeeds in giving us a text that achieves both a wide range of cases and analyses sufficient to stimulte thoughtful discussion. * Leah McClimans, Ethical Theory and Moral Practice *Mahowald succeeds in presenting a diverse series of bioethical issues relating to women's health. Her analysis is often sophisticated and original. * Medical Health Care and Philosophy journal *her [Mahodwald's] ethics stand as a postmodern ideal * Michele Pridmore-Brown, TLS01/06/07 *This is a well-written, thought-provoking book and a welcome addition to any library. * Doody's Notes *Table of ContentsPART ONE: A BIOETHICS FOR WOMEN; PART TWO: TOPICS, ISSUES, AND CASES; PART THREE: AN EGALITARIAN IDEAL

Book SynopsisAn international study of maternal care and maternal mortality. Since about 1800, different countries have developed quite different systems of maternal care, and this book provides an analysis, grounded in statistics, of the evolution and the effectiveness of those systems in various countries.Trade Review`Loudon's acute awareness of his subject's complexity and his sensitivity give the writing a wonderful suppleness and restraint. ... An expensive book worth every penny, it is one which lactation consultants and all those interested in maternal and child health issues today should own, read, and ponder.' J Hum Lact 9(4) 1993`Thanks to this work we can now begin to question many common assumptions about the causes of maternal mortality. Death in Childbirth surely deserves to become the standard reference work on the subject.' Ornella Moscucci, British Medical Journal`Given the complexity of the subject, it is inevitable that this carefully researched book should still raise many questions. Loudon marshals the facts with confidence and skill; his lucid and lively style is captivating, and even the numerically illiterate will have no difficulty in understanding the statistical arguments. Death in Childbirth surely deserves to become the standard reference work on the subject.' Ornella Moscucci, Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, British Medical Journal`Death in Childbirth is a major achievement, and should be read by anyone interested in the history of women's relations with the medical profession ... it is a great advantage to have so much material brought together and presented in such an elegant style.' Times Literary Supplement`Loudon's impressive volume explores the causes and trends of maternal mortality...we need hard statistics. Loudon provides these in abundance, in a feat of dexterity and clarity that continues through some 600 pages..."Death In Childbirth" without doubt magnificently achieves its goal of comparing rates and causes of maternal mortality internationally...Representing the best sort of history, his book provides us with a mountain of carefully presented evidence and leaves us with much food for thought' Times Higher'This is a complex book, which would be an essential reference for anyone attempting to under-take serious work in the field: it is also a text worth browsing through, however, since Loudon writes with a conviction that is persuasive and engaging.' Book SynopsisTrade Review"An outstanding depiction of the mutual constitution of science and society. Cleverly unpacking the complex history of scientific debates on so-called 'maternal impressions' (later, 'maternal effects') on offspring and future generations, author Sarah Richardson unveils the epistemological origins of concepts we take for granted today. . . . The book is an epistemological provocation, a reminder that science is a political enterprise, and an invitation to produce knowledge that empowers women instead of knowledge that makes them solely responsible for our collective future." * Science *"[A] rigorous academic study... Policymakers, health-care providers, and scientific researchers will want to take note." * Publishers Weekly *“Sarah Richardson’s book The Maternal Imprint… argues that social assumptions about maternal responsibility lend ideas in this field more credibility than they deserve on the basis of the data. Her argument will be interesting to researchers, pregnant nerds and policymakers.” * Nature *"Richardson explains and challenges much of what I (and probably you) take for granted about human pregnancy and the role of mothers in fetal development. Richardson brilliantly confronts notions that some women are 'bad mothers' who imperil the welfare of their offspring by not taking care of themselves sufficiently while pregnant. . . . The Maternal Imprint is a thoroughly researched, amusing, and confronting book that should be essential reading for anyone interested in epigenetics, infant health, and how these interact with race and social class." * FASEB Journal *"Enlightening. . . . What is particularly compelling about Richardson's approach is that by situating the field’s challenges in a broader social and historical context, we get a sense of why they matter. . . . In the likelihood that epigenetics might be used to explore the long shadow of our current trauma, Richardson's book offers an important lens through which we can regard claims about the role of maternal bodies." * Lancet *"The inheritance of acquired traits is not a heresy in medicine, but the basis of an enormously productive research program... Richardson puts this research in its historical context and takes a critical look at its basic assumptions, methods and conclusions." * Archyde *"In this volume, historian and philosopher of science Richardson... provides a historical overview and an analysis of debates, theories, and research about epigenetics and gene expression, spanning from Weismann’s expression of deterministic germ plasma theory in the late 19th century to current epigenetics and theory about the developmental origins of health and disease as articulated in the early 21st century." * CHOICE *"Beliefs about which specific maternal behaviors or experiences have lasting effects on gestating offspring have shifted widely over time. . . . [Richardson] gives this rich history a clearer context in the discussion of reproductive responsibility." * Harvard Gazette *"Richardson concisely and vividly presents how medical and scientific thinking about the contribution of mothers and fathers to the development of offspring developed. Richardson's thoroughly compelling book . . . shows the ideological complexity of modern science." * Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung *"The Maternal Imprint will be of interest to a trans-disciplinary audience in that it provides a historical critique of science that is well-versed in the scientific claims and attuned to the influence of culture on science. This trans-disciplinary book provides a framework for both biological and social scientists to think about the values and assumptions that have guided their disciplines' perspectives on the maternal body and infant health." * Metascience *“[Richardson’s] compelling interpretation cleanly cuts through the posited difference between genetics and epigenetics, ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ heredity. Far from challenging genetic determinism, epigenetic pregnancy research ‘advances a model of human inheritance and development in which the wider social and physical environment can be seen as heritable and as determinant of future biomedical outcomes.’ Constructions of epigenetics as bridging the gap between social and biological processes resonate widely in STS and gender studies, even among critical scholars; Richardson’s book is a thought-provoking intervention.” * Isis *“Richardson’s book is rigorous, entertaining, informative, and politically important.” * Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal *“Academically robust and meticulously researched, The Maternal Imprint is a pleasurable and engaging read that will appeal to a wide audience, including the public and undergraduate students.” * Childhood in the Past *"A rich, elegantly argued analysis of the long history of scientific and popular thinking about 'maternal effects' on the fetuses that women gestate, full of well-articulated plunges into the archives of scientific texts and journals in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This is an important, beautifully researched, and well-written book by an author whose prior works have literally changed their fields." -- Rayna Rapp, New York University"Richardson reveals that epigenetics is not just the newest cutting-edge, pro-social, plasticity-favoring, anti-genetic, and anti-reductionist field to emerge from modern molecular genetics. Rather, it is also the vector of newly problematic images and social roles that limit women and diminish the status of pregnancy and motherhood, in ways that are disturbingly similar to nineteenth-century societal notions of women's roles. Richardson's exquisitely documented arguments will be compelling to all with an interest in the complex interface of science and society." -- Michael J. Wade, Indiana University"This is a major contribution from a feminist STS scholar who deftly interweaves scientific, epistemological, and ethical considerations into a tour-de-force book on a topic with implications for mothers, families, and communities." -- Alexandra Minna Stern, author of Eugenic Nation: Faults and Frontiers of Better Breeding in Modern AmericaTable of Contents1.
