Kerber Verlag Digital Imaginaries: African Positions
Book SynopsisAfrica is changing and digitisation is playing a pivotal role in it. Throughout the whole continent, digital practices are emerging which radically transform African societies and their worldwide perception. However, digital infrastructures remain marked by local and global asymmetries despite the widespread use of mobile phones. Over the course of two years and in three African and European cities, the interdisciplinary exhibition and research project Digital Imaginaries took this contradictory diversity of digital phenomena as its starting point in order to explore possible digital futures in Africa. Transcript Verlag Interrogating Datafication – Towards a Praxeology
Book SynopsisWhat constitutes a data practice and how do contemporary digital media technologies reconfigure our understanding of practices in general? Autonomously acting media, distributed digital infrastructures, and sensor-based media environments challenge the conditions of accounting for data practices both theoretically and empirically. Which forms of cooperation are constituted in and by data practices? And how are human and nonhuman agencies distributed and interrelated in data-saturated environments? The volume collects theoretical, empirical, and historiographical contributions from a range of international scholars to shed light on the current shift from media to data practices.

Book SynopsisThis is the first part of the complete reprint of Japan Illustrated 1934-1938, the most important photographic yearbook of Japan in the pre-WW2 period. With the advice of Kentaro Kaneko, statesman and diplomat, and Miles Walter Vaughn, an influential American journalist in Japan, it was launched by Nippon Dempo News Agency (now called Dentsu), the leading press and advertisement agency, and played an important role to promote Japan and improve the cultural image of the country which was being criticised by Western society for military aggression. Each yearbook, which includes many photos and plate sections, describes current affairs and holds the latest trade data. There is a ‘General Guide for Foreign Travellers’, which includes detailed information of famous tourist places to visit and the regions of Japan, and introduces local culture and seasonal events. There are also chapters about the Japanese colonies like South Sea Islands, Taiwan, Chosen, Karafuto, and Manchu. Each yearly volume carries advertisements of more than 200 companies from where some hard-to-find data of Japanese business activities of the time can be obtained. Book SynopsisThis is the third series of a collection of caricatures and cartoons published in newspapers and journals worldwide during the period from the end of the nineteenth century to pre-second world war. Covering the years 1921-1930, this three-volume collection features more than 4,700 caricatures and cartoons from nearly 360 newspapers and journals of 35 countries, which includes China, India, Japan and other non-western regions as well as UK, US and Europe. Caricatures and Cartoons: A History of the World, series 3, 1921-1930 vividly describes the changes of the world during the interwar period; the decline of the British empire, the rise of the USA, the aggression of Japan in the Far East, the Irish independent movement, as well as the entrance of Mussolini and Hitler into the international politics. Originally selected by the editor of The Review of Reviews, a monthly magazine published since 1889 in the UK and US, which carried the summery of news and reports collected from the periodicals over the world, the cartoons appeared in various sections of the magazine and its appendices. However, even in the back issue collections held at UK or US libraries, those sections were often lost and are rarely available completely. Chronologically arranged, the volumes will be a very useful visual tool for students and scholars researching global modern history during the interwar period, as well as for anybody interested in the history of comics. Amsterdam University Press Mobile Mapping: Space, Cartography and the
Book SynopsisThis book argues for a theory of mobile mapping, a situated and spatial approach towards researching how everyday digital mobile media practices are bound up in global systems of knowledge and power. Drawing from literature in media studies and geography -- and the work of Michel Foucault and Doreen Massey -- it examines how geographical and historical material, social, and cultural conditions are embedded in the way in which contemporary (digital) cartographies are read, deployed, and engaged. This is explored through seventeen walking interviews in Hong Kong and Sydney, as potent discourses like cartographic reason continue to transform and weave through the world in ways that haunt mobile mapping and bring old conflicts into new media. In doing so, Mobile Mapping offers an interdisciplinary rethinking about how multiple translations of spatial knowledges between rational digital epistemologies and tacit ways of understanding space and experience might be conceptualized and researched.Table of ContentsPart One: Maps, Mappers, Mapping 1. Amsterdam University Press The Post-Screen Through Virtual Reality,
Book SynopsisScreens are ubiquitous today. Yet contemporary screen media eliminate the presence of the screen and diminish the visibility of its boundaries. As the image becomes indistinguishable from the viewer’s surroundings, this unsettling prompts re.examination of how screen boundaries demarcate. Through readings of three media forms – Virtual Reality; holograms; and light projections – this book develops new theories of the surfaces on and spaces in which images are displayed. Interrogating contemporary contestations of reality against illusion, it argues that the disappearance of difference reflects shifted conditions of actuality and virtuality in understanding the human condition. These shifts further connect to the current state of politics by way of their distorted truth values, corrupted terms of information, and internalizations of difference. The Post.Screen Through Virtual Reality, Holograms and Light Projections thus thinks anew the image’s borders and delineations, evoking the screen boundary as an instrumentation of today’s intense virtualizations which do not tell the truth. In the process, a new imagination for images emerges for a gluttony of the virtual; for new conceptualizations of object and representation, materiality and energies, media and histories, real and unreal; for new understandings of appearances, dis-appearances, replacement and re.placement – the post-screen.Trade ReviewThe Post-Screen Through Virtual Reality, Holograms and Light Projections received an Honourable Mention in the category Best First Monograph at the BAFTSS Publication Awards 2023 "Jenna Ng's book is an exciting read. The goals are ambitious: to uncover the emerging culture of 'post-screens' that bleed into our lives and environments; to understand their position within the tradition of screen media from early modernity onwards; and to reflect on how they shape our experience and understanding today. Reassessing the concepts of virtuality, illusion, and death, this powerful book constructs its argument with skill, care, and insight, and succeeds to disclose something essential about the contemporary 'human condition.'"- Pasi Väliaho, University of Oslo "Jenna Ng presents us with a convincing argument: while traditional frames of the pictorial are vanishing, the screen becomes internalised onto the body of the spectator. The book looks at the future of post-screen media with the best approach I can think of: a strong sense of history and an insightful philosophical toolkit. Warmly recommended for and beyond media and film studies students and scholars." - Jussi Parikka, FAMU (Prague) and University of Southampton (UK)Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction Post-Screen Media: Meshing the Chain Mail Eroding Boundaries in the Contemporary Mediascape Why Boundaries Matter Chapter Outlines The Post-what? 1 Screen Boundaries as Movement Re-placing the Screen: Play and Display, Appearance and Dis-Appearance Screen Boundaries: Physical and Virtual, and of the Movement Betwixt Metaphors for the Screen Crossing Screen Boundaries: Love, Pleasure, Information, Transformation Interactivity and the Moveable Window Screen Boundaries Across Dimensions 2 Leaking at the Edges Protections and Partitions Rupturing Screen Boundaries Interplay between Fictional and Factual Threat Leaking at the Edges: The Merging of the Amalgamated Real Virtual Co-location in Real-time… and in the Era of Covid-19 The Screen Boundary Against the Algorithm Screen Boundaries in Flux 3 Virtual Reality: Confinement and Engulfment; Replacement and Re-placement "Multitudes of Amys" On Immersion (Briefly) The Affective Surround: The Two Vectors of Immersion The Post-Screen Through VR (1): Confinement and Engulfment The Post-Screen Through VR (2): Replacement and Re-placement The Danger Paradox VR as Immersion: Travel, Escape, Fulfilment VR as Inversion: Witness, Empathy, Subjectivity Defeated by the Ghosts 4 Holograms/Holographic Projections : Ghosts Amongst the Living; Ghosts of the Living How We See Ghosts, or, In Love with the Post-Screen Ghosts in the Media: Re-inventing the Afterlife The Post-Screen Through Holograms/Holographic Projections Holographic Projections (1): Ghosts Amongst the Living – Limbo Between Deadness and Aliveness Holographic Projections (2): Ghosts of the Living – Vivification of the Virtual Real A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Substitution 4A (Remix) True Holograms: A Different Kind of Screen; A Different Kind of Ghost Screens and Ghosts, or, the Window and the Guy in the Basement True Holograms A Different Kind of Screen: Brains, Nerves, Thought A Different Kind of Ghost: "A Memory, A Daydream, A Secret," or, Digital Apparitions 5 Light Projections: On the Matter of Light and the Lightness of Matter The City Rises The Light Rises, or, Light as the Matter of Light Cities of Screens Light Projections (1): Light that Dissolves and Constructs… and of Latency Light Projections (2): Walls that Fall Apart… and Re-Form Light Projections (3): Particles that Gain a Body… and Transform Projection Mapping (1): The Image that Devours Structure; the Voracity that is a Media History Projection Mapping (2): The Exterior that Reveals; the Permanence that Fades The Ground Beneath Our Feet Conclusion/Coda Postscripts to the Post-Screen: The Holiday and the Global Pandemic Twin Obsessions (1): Difference Twin Obsessions (2): The Gluttony The Post-Screen in the Time of Covid-19 Index

Amsterdam University Press Screen Genealogies: From Optical Device to
Book SynopsisAgainst the grain of the growing literature on screens, Screen Genealogies argues that the present excess of screens cannot be understood as an expansion and multiplication of the movie screen nor of the video display. Rather, screens continually exceed the optical histories in which they are most commonly inscribed. As contemporary screens become increasingly decomposed into a distributed field of technologically interconnected surfaces and interfaces, we more readily recognize the deeper spatial and environmental interventions that have long been a property of screens. For most of its history, a screen was a filter, a divide, a shelter, or a camouflage. A genealogy stressing transformation and descent rather than origins and roots emphasizes a deeper set of intersecting and competing definitions of the screen, enabling new thinking about what the screen might yet become.Table of ContentsCHAP 00 INTRODUCTION Craig Buckley, Rüdiger Campe, and Francesco Casetti SECTION ONE: 'Becoming Screen' CHAP 01 Primal Screens Francesco Casetti, Yale University CHAP 02 'Schutz und Schirm': Screening in German During Early Modern Times Rüdiger Campe, Yale University SECTION TWO: Spaces CHAP 03 Face and Screen: Toward a Genealogy of the Media Façade Craig Buckley, Yale University CHAP 04 Sensing Screens: From Surface to Situation Nanna Verhoeff, Utrecht University CHAP 05 'Taking the Plunge': The New Immersive Screens Ariel Rogers, Northwestern University SECTION THREE: Atmospheres CHAP 06 The Atmospheric Screen: Turner, Hazlitt, Ruskin Antonio Somaini, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3 CHAP 07 The Fog Medium: Visualizing and Engineering the Atmosphere Yuriko Furuhata, McGill University CHAP 08 The Charge of a Light Barricade: Optics and Ballistics in the Ambiguous Being of Screens John Durham Peters, Yale University SECTION FOUR: Formats CHAP 09 Flat Bayreuth: A Genealogy of Opera as Screened Gundula Kreuzer, Yale University CHAP 10 Imaginary Screens: The Hypnotic Gesture and Early Film Ruggero Eugeni, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore - Milan CHAP 11 Material. World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Pattern Book: Fractals, Art And Nature, The
Book SynopsisThis book will allow you to travel through time and space. To facilitate your journey, the editor has scoured the four corners of the earth in a quest for unusual people and their fascinating patterns. From Mozambique, to Asia, to many European countries, the contributors to The Pattern Book include world-famous cancer researchers, little-known artists and eclectirc computer programmers. Some of the patterns are ultramodern, while others are centuries old. Many of the patterns are drawn from the universe of mathematics. Computer recipes are scattered throughout.Although the emphasis is on computer-generated patterns, the book is informal and the intended audience spans several fields. The emphasis is on the fun that the true pattern lover finds in doing, rather than in reading about the doing! The book is organized into three main parts: Representing Nature (for those patterns which describe or show real physical phenomena, e.g., visualizations of protein motion, sea lilies, etc.), Mathematics and Symmetry (for those patterns which describe or show mathematical behavior, e.g. fractals), and Human Art (for those patterns which are artistic works of humans and made without the aid of a computer, e.g. Moslem tiling patterns.)

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Geometry, Perspective Drawing, And Mechanisms
Book SynopsisThe aim of this book is to examine the geometry of our world and, by blending theory with a variety of every-day examples, to stimulate the imagination of the readers and develop their geometric intuition. It tries to recapture the excitement that surrounded geometry during the Renaissance as the development of perspective drawing gathered pace, or more recently as engineers sought to show that all the world was a machine. The same excitement is here still, as enquiring minds today puzzle over a random-dot stereogram or the interpretation of an image painstakingly transmitted from Jupiter. The book will give a solid foundation for a variety of undergraduate courses, to provide a basis for a geometric component of graduate teacher training, and to provide background for those who work in computer graphics and scene analysis. It begins with a self-contained development of the geometry of extended Euclidean space. This framework is then used to systematically clarify and develop the art of perspective drawing and its converse discipline of scene analysis and to analyze the behavior of bar-and-joint mechanisms and hinged-panel mechanisms. Spherical polyhedra are introduced and scene analysis is applied to drawings of these and associated objects. The book concludes by showing how a natural relaxation of the axioms developed in the early chapters leads to the concept of a matroid and briefly examines some of the attractive properties of these natural structures.Table of ContentsCombinatorial Figures; Combinatorial Geometries; Planar Geometries and Projective Planes; Non-Planar Geometries and Projective Spaces; Persective Drawings; Binocular Vision and Stereograms; Scene Analysis; Distortion and Anamorphic Art; Planar Bar-and-Joint Mechanisms; Non-Planar Hinged-Panel Mechanisms; Graphs; Spherical Polyhedra; Scene Analysis; Matroids.

Association of Computing Machinery,U.S. Pick, Click, Flick!: The Story of Interaction
Book SynopsisThis book provides a comprehensive study of the many ways to interact with computers and computerized devices. An "interaction technique" starts when the user performs an action that causes an electronic device to respond, and includes the direct feedback from the device to the user. Examples include physical buttons and switches, on-screen menus and scrollbars operated by a mouse, touchscreen widgets, gestures such as flick-to-scroll, text entry on computers and touchscreens, interactions with conversational agents such as Apple Siri, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Microsoft Cortana, and adaptations of all of these for people with disabilities.Beginning with a history of the invention and development of interaction techniques, the author goes on to describe the various approaches in use today, continuing with a discussion of the state-of-the-art research that is driving the development of novel approaches for the future. The book features summaries of interviews with some of the original inventors of interaction techniques, including David Canfield Smith (the desktop and icons), Larry Tesler (copy/paste), Ted Selker (IBM TrackPoint), Loren Brichter (Pull-to-Refresh), and many others. The author also describes how to use, model, implement, and evaluate new interaction techniques.Pick, Click, Flick! is written for anyone interested in interaction techniques, including computer scientists and designers working on human-computer interaction, as well as implementers and consumers who want to understand and get the most out of their digital devices.
