  • Brian Blomerth's Bicycle Day

Anthology Editions Brian Blomerth's Bicycle Day

    2 in stock

Illustrator, musician and self-described “comic stripper” Brian Blomerth has spent years combining classic underground art styles with his bitingly irreverent visual wit in zines, comics, and album covers. With Brian Blomerth’s Bicycle Day, the artist has produced his most ambitious work to date: a historical account of the events of April 19, 1943, when Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann ingested an experimental dose of a new compound known as lysergic acid diethylamide and embarked on the world’s first acid trip. Combining an extraordinary true story told in journalistic detail with the artist’s gritty, timelessly Technicolor comix style, Brian Blomerth’s Bicycle Day is a testament to mind expansion and a stunningly original visual history.

  • The Worst Book Ever

Drawn and Quarterly The Worst Book Ever

    3 in stock

Don t take the title as a metaphor: it really is the worst book ever. The winner of the Governor General Literary Award and children s book author and illustrator Elise Gravel takes readers on an unexpected journey through the world s most boring book in The Worst Book Ever. The characters and omniscient readers alike quickly become annoyed by the author s bland imagination and rebel against her tired tropes and stale choices, spouting sass in an attempt to get her attention and steer the narrative in a more interesting direction. After all, you don t even have to buy the book, but the characters? They re stuck in there for an eternity, and they re going to do their best to make the most of it, or at least have a little fun when they can. As the charming and bizarre true nature of the characters overpowers the dry attributes given to them by the author, this once blase story quickly picks up speed, transforming into something much more unique than originally promised. With Gravel s signature goofy characters behind the wheel, no silly twist or rude body function is off the table.

  • Little Lulu: Working Girl

Drawn and Quarterly Little Lulu: Working Girl

    3 in stock

Lulu Moppet is an outspoken, brazen young girl who doesn't follow the rules--whether they've been set by her parents, the neighborhood boys, or society itself. In spring 2019 D+Q begins a landmark reissue series of Lulu's suburban hijinks: she goes on picnics, babysits, and attempts to break into the boys' clubhouse again and again. The cartoonist John Stanley's expert timing and constant gags made these stories unbelievably enjoyable, which made Marge's Little Lulu a defining comic of the postwar period. First released in the 1940s and 1950s as Dell comics, Little Lulu as helmed by Stanley remains one of the most entertaining works in the medium. In this first volume, Little Lulu: Working Girl, we meet the mainstay characters: Lulu, Tubby, Alvin, and oodles more neighborhood kids. Little Lulu's comedy lies in the hilarious dynamic between its cast of characters, so it's a joy to see them come to life. Lulu's assertiveness, individuality, and creativity is empowering to witness--the series is powerfully feminist despite the decades in which the stories were created. It's her strong personality that made her beloved by such feminist icons as Patti Smith, Eileen Myles, and more. Lovingly restored to its original full color, complete with knee-slapping humor and insightful representation of how young children behave, Little Lulu: Working Girl is a delight for readers of all ages.

Kazusa was a quiet middle schooler, but she arrived in high school determined to make friends. So (as a huge Harry Potter fan) she decides to join the literature club. When one of the club's icebreakers is 'say one thing you want to do before you die,' one of the girls blurts out 'sex.' The prudish club president, the class beauty, and the other nerdy girls' reactions are wildly different. Far from a typical sex comedy, O Maidens in Your Savage Season depicts how these girls challenge and support one another when that word pushes them onto a variety of clumsy, funny, painful, and emotional paths towards adulthood. Mari Okada's unique talent for pairing lovable and relatable characters and emotional twists is lent new dimension by the detailed and dynamic sequential art of Nao Emoto (Forget Me Not).

When Rose returns to Egypt after the bombing, she sifts through the artifacts Gameela left behind, desperate to understand how her sister came to die, and who she truly was. Soon, Rose realizes that Gameela has left many questions unanswered. Why had she quit her job just a few months before her death and not told her family? Who was she romantically involved with? And how did the religious Gameela manage to keep so many secrets? Rich in depth and feeling, A Pure Heart is a brilliant portrait of two Muslim women in the twenty-first century, and the decisions they make in work and love that determine their destinies. As Rose is struggling to reconcile her identities as an Egyptian and as a new American, she investigates Gameela's devotion to her religion and her country. The more Rose uncovers about her sister's life, the more she must reconcile their two fates, their inextricable bond as sisters, and who should and should not be held responsible for Gameela's death. Founded in 1956, the French psychiatric clinic La Chesnaie is an open and welcoming facility that houses about one hundred people of all ages. It provides traditional forms of care for people with serious mental illness, but it does so in a uniquely supportive environment where patients and caregivers participate equally in the day-to-day operations of the clinic. The driving force of La Chesnaie is the “Club,” a nonprofit organization serving as a liaison between the clinic and the outside world. It arranges cultural and recreational outings for the patients as well as activities like concerts and exhibitions that bring the public to La Chesnaie. As a result, days at the clinic are quite lively and never routine.Author Aurélien Ducoudray and illustrator Jeff Pourquié immersed themselves for a time in the culture of La Chesnaie. Like everyone there, including the patients, supervisors, and caregivers, they took part in the daily chores of the clinic, cooking and cleaning. They participated in group events and even led a comics workshop to teach the residents about their craft. The Third Population is the engaging, inspiring, and often poignantly funny result of this project. The Third Population is a sensitive and uncompromising portrayal of daily life in this singular psychiatric health facility where patients are encouraged to build human relationships in spite of the difficulties that mental illness can pose. As the supervisors and caregivers take part in the daily activities of their patients, differences are erased and empathic bonds are formed, with the result that sometimes it is difficult to distinguish the patients from the caregivers.
