  • The Good Times are Killing Me

Drawn and Quarterly The Good Times are Killing Me

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisYoung Edna Arkins lives in a neighborhood that is rapidly changing, thanks to white flight from urban Seattle in the late 1960s. As the world changes around her, Edna is exposed to the callous racism of adults; sometimes subtle and other times blatant, but always stinging. At the heart of The Good Times Are Killing Me is the forbidden friendship between Edna who is white and Bonna Willis who is black, and how the world around them forces them to challenge their loyalties to each other. As Barry does in her comics, she perfectly captures the awkward and earnest adolescent voice as Edna moves from childhood to middle school. Originally published in 1988, The Good Times Are Killing Me is as relevant now as it ever was. Its influence cannot be overstated as it was adapted into an off-Broadway play and won the Washington State Governor's Award. D+Q will be publishing the novella in hardcover with a new cover and the color illustrations from the first edition.

  • Fake Lake

    Drawn and Quarterly Fake Lake

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisIt's noon on Tuesday in Fake Lake and the smell of the Tire Stack (still smoldering after thirty years) is wafting through the window of the Greasy Spoon Diner. Inside the radio's tuned to YFUK--Fake Lake's own Talk Dirty Radio. Mayor Dundoing is tucking into a rasher of surreal back bacon while perusing the Bottom Feeder's Crassified Ads--there's a used cemetery plot and a fat-bum door knocker for sale, a hide-a-bed has gone missing, and Mistress Grind wishes to reduce someone to a mere nub. The town of Fake Lake is a sludge pit of goings-on and the Bottom Feeder (the local paper) has been kept busy chronicling what amounts to a mild apocalypse--collapsing bridges, a gap in the street that swallows the high school band, an awful bacterial business at the hot springs, and a great blowout at the Fakeola bottling plant. Seeing souls ripe for the picking, Lucifer (ever a prominent presence in Fake Lake) has even taken out a paid advertising supplement--Writhing Bodies Herbal Tea Mix, anyone? Revel in the oddities of Adrian Norvid's large-format drawings with the bizarre and terribly funny Fake Lake. There's a seat for you in the Polished by Bums Tavern and it looks like someone's signed you up for the Midnight Churchyard Dig.

  • The Customer is Always Wrong

Drawn and Quarterly The Customer is Always Wrong

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Customer is Always Wrong is the continuing saga of a young naive artist working in a restaurant of drunks, junkies, thieves, and creeps. Oakland in the late seventies is a scuzzy, low-rent warzone and Mimi Pond folds the tales of the sleaze-ball characters that sur- round her into her workaday waitressing life. Outrageous and loving tributes and takedowns of her co-workers and satellites of the Imperial Cafe create a snapshot of a time in Mimi s life where she encounters who she is, and who she is not. Told in the same brash yet earnest style as her previous memoir Over Easy, Pond s storytelling gifts have never been stronger than in this epic, comedic novel. She drops readers right back at the Imperial with its great coffee and depraved cast, where things only get worse for the addicts and alcoholics surrounding her while her career as a cartoonist starts to take off.

  • The Golem's Mighty Swing

Drawn and Quarterly The Golem's Mighty Swing

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisBefore penning his acclaimed graphic novel Market Day and founding the Center for Cartoon Studies, James Sturm proved his worth as a master cartoonist with the eloquent graphic novel, The Golem s Mighty Swing, one of the first breakout graphic novel hits of the 21st century. Sturm s fascination with the invisible America has been the crux of his comics work, exploring the rarely-told or oft-forgotten bits of history that define a country. By reuniting America s greatest pastime with its hidden history, the graphic novel tells the story of the Stars of David, a barnstorming Jewish baseball team of the depression era. Led by its manager and third baseman, the nomadic team travels from small town to small town providing the thrill of the sport while playing up their religious exoticism as a curio for people to gawk at, heckle, and taunt. When the team s fortunes fall, the players are presented a plan to get people in the stands. But by placing their fortunes in the hands of a promoter, the Stars of David find themselves fanning the flames of ethnic tensions. Sturm s nuanced composition is on full display as he deftly builds the climax of the game against the rising anti-Semitic fervour of the crowd. Baseball, small towns, racial tensions, and the desperate grasp for the American Dream: The Golem s Mighty Swing is a classic American novel.Trade ReviewSturm s prose is as elegantly understated as his line work. • Yellow Yellow

    Drawn and Quarterly Yellow Yellow

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisYellow Yellow is a charmingly simple story of a child whose playground is a gritty urban cityscape, written by Frank Asch and drawn by Mark Alan Stamaty. With no parent in sight, the boy wanders the sidewalks to find a yellow construction hat that quickly becomes his favorite belonging, earning him many compliments from strangers on nearby stoops. Eventually the boy meets the owner of the hat and must return it, leading the child to make his own yellow hat. Yet the story comes alive via the visual feast of urban oddities that the Who Needs Donuts? cartoonist Stamaty packs in the background of this rediscovered children s classic. As the boy innocently wears his yellow hard hat down city streets, he is oblivious to his surrealist fun-house surroundings filled with fantastical neighbors, such as an old lady on a unicycle and a punk with a head full of fish vacuuming the sidewalk. In scratchy black ink drawings, Stamaty builds a bygone city filled with small storefronts shoe stores, bookshops, delicatessens, and barbershops all packed with detail upon detail. Delightfully grotesque humor lurks in the scenery of Yellow Yellow from page to page, rewarding multiple readings. Stamaty s imagination to fill the space is as limitless as the world was to a young boy in 1970.

  • The Follies Of Richard Wadsworth

Drawn and Quarterly The Follies Of Richard Wadsworth

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Follies of Richard Wadsworth showcases Nick Maandag's signature blend of deadpan satire and exceedingly unexpected plot twists. In Night School, a Modern Managerial Business Administration and Operational Leadership class goes awry when a fire alarm brings the Chief to school and he decides to stick around to teach the students a thing or two about leadership--and discipline. The Follies of Richard Wadsworth follows the title character, a professor of philosophy, as he begins work as a contract instructor at yet another university. When Wadsworth finds himself smoking reefer at his student's party and discovers she works at a rub 'n' tug, an off-kilter plan is hatched. And in The Disciple, a yarn about a coed Buddhist monastery, Brother Bananas, the resident gorilla, isn't the only one having difficulty keeping his lust tucked safely under his robe. In Maandag's hands--hands that love to toy with morally ambiguous characters and flirt with absurdity--troubled men make poor decisions, unlikable characters gain our sympathies through their very haplessness, and riotous laughs ensue. Maandag has achieved cult acclaim through his self-published and micro-published comics, and The Follies of Richard Wadsworth is his debut book. His mechanical, affectless characters and economical artwork efficiently deliver cringes, heightening the awkward silence and stillness of his hilarious comics.

    Drawn and Quarterly Nori

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisIgnatz nominated and MoCCA Arts Festival Award-winning cartoonist Rumi Hara invites you to visit her magical world. Nori (short for Noriko) is a spirited three-year-old girl who lives with her parents and grandmother in the suburbs of Osaka during the 1980s. While both parents work full-time, her grandmother is Nori s caregiver and companion forever following after Nori as the three year old dashes off on fantastical adventures. One day Nori runs off to be met by an army of bats the symbol of happiness. Soon after, she is at school chasing a missing rabbit while performing as a moon in the school play, touching on the myth of the Moon Rabbit. A ditch by the side of the road opens a world of kids, crawfish, and beetles, not to mention the golden frog and albino salamander. That night, her grandma takes to the Bon Odori festival to dance with her ancestors. When Nori wins a trip to Hawaii, she finds herself swimming with a sea turtle, though she doesn t know how to swim. In mesmerizing short stories of black and white artwork with alternating spot color, Hara draws on East Asian folklore and Japanese culture to create an enchanting milieu that Nori tries to make sense of, wrestling between the reality of what she sees and the legends her grandma shares with her.

  • I Know You Rider

Drawn and Quarterly I Know You Rider

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisA candid and philosophical memoir tackling abortion and the complex decision to reproduceI Know You Rider is Leslie Stein's rumination on the many complex questions surrounding the decision to reproduce. Opening in an abortion clinic, the book accompanies Stein through a year of her life, steeped in emotions she was not quite expecting while also looking far beyond her own experiences. She visits with a childhood friend who's just had twins and is trying to raise them as environmentally as possible, chats with another who's had a vasectomy to spare his wife a lifetime of birth control, and spends Christmas with her own mother, who aches for a grandchild.Through these melodically rendered conversations with loved ones and strangers, Stein weaves one continuing conversation with herself. She presents a sometimes sweet, sometimes funny, and always powerfully empathetic account, asking what makes a life meaningful and where we find joy, amid other questionsmost of which have no solid answers, much like real life.Instead of focusing on trauma, I Know You Rider is a story about unpredictability, change, and adaptability, adding a much-needed new perspective to a topic often avoided or discussed through a black-and-white lens. People are ever changing, contradicting themselves, and having to deal with unforeseen circumstances: Stein holds this human condition with grace and humor, as she embraces the cosmic choreography and keeps walking, open to what life blows her way.

Perfectly composed drawings are punctuated with the artist's signature brand of humour, hitting high and low. Quail before the critic's incisive dissection of the manuscript! Book SynopsisA quintessentially millennial tale about friendship and the quest for self-actualizationThis is going to be Frank's year. He's going to do it all: find love, become a famous comedian, and responsibly parent his plants. But then, Giorgio gets hit by a bus.Self-assured and utterly entitled, Giorgio has always seemed like Frank, but better. Moving in with and caring for his estranged childhood friend quickly starts to chip away at Frank's sense of self, as well as Giogio's carefully curated online persona. Is Giorgio's penchant for overindulgence truly aspirational? Or is it ultimately a red flag? The further Frank is pulled into Giorgio's orbit, the quicker his existential dread blooms. Expectation and reality soon collide in a singular tale about trust and confidence.Luke Healy's playful, hilarious third graphic novel uses crisp lines and physical comedy to portray an uneasy friendship between two young men on the cusp of adulting. Snippets from Frank's middling stand-up routines are punctuated by the subtle farce of Healy's mise-en-scène and the lively, at times scathingly pointed, banter of old friends. The Con Artists is a stylish character study that asks the question of who fools who once everyone is off-camera.

  • Separated from Santo

Heritage Group Distribution Separated from Santo

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA poignant and eye-opening graphic novel chronicling one Italian-Canadian family''s traumatic separation when their loving father and husband is interned as an "enemy alien" during the Second World War.In 1933, disturbed by the rise of Mussolini’s fascist regime, Santo and Alice Pasqualini left their native Italy and settled in Vancouver, Canada, to create a new life far away from the burgeoning madness of Europe. The couple opened a bakery and became naturalized residents of their new country, avoiding politics and concentrating on working hard and building a family.Unfortunately, their refuge was short-lived, when Santo was arrested for being an “enemy alien” and interned first in Kananaskis, Alberta, and then in Petawawa, Ontario. Italian Canadians, similar to Japanese and German Canadians were considered a threat to the country and therefore, these individuals, mostly male, were imprisoned with no release date determined. Santo, a hardworking man who loved his family, lost his bakery, delivery truck, and house. Meanwhile, his wife and children struggled to get by, as he was interned for twenty-four months, with little to no communication between him and his family. Alice suffered a nervous breakdown due to the stress of the situation and was hospitalized, resulting in their two children being sent off to live with two separate families for nearly two years.Told in dynamic graphic novel form, Separated from Santo depicts an individual who was mistreated, who persevered, and eventually was reunited with his family. Instead of being bitter towards adopted country, the family accepted the situation for what it was, and was thankful to build a home in such a great country. Decades later, apologies from the Canadian government acknowledged the injustice, though the incident reverberated through generations. Written by the great-grandson of Santo and Alice, this poignant and powerful story is a reminder to see the humanity behind every so-called “enemy.”

A metaphor would be a lot less inconvenient. On the other side of the room, Kenneth is creating a new religion. He thinks narrative is the operating principle of the universe. He also thinks he's the hero of Beth's story. Beth is worried he's going to leave her. The creatures living in the pole may have stolen her cat.Tara Black's comic is surreal, dark, sad, perversely joyful, and if you bet someone they couldn't find another book remotely like it, you would win. • Cormorance

    Vintage Publishing Cormorance

Book SynopsisThis is the story of a girl and a boy and a lake. The girl wants only to impress her mother, and finds the perfect challenge to prove herself. The boy suffers a tragedy, becomes fixated with a lost memento and makes it his mission to find it. The water is where, one day, the two will meet. Cormorance is a story of an accidental encounter, an unbreakable bond, and the redemptive force of connecting with the natural world. A wordless, purely visual story, it is - like any work by the award-winning Nick Hayes - a book of the utmost beauty, and a wonder to hold in your hand.Trade ReviewThis beautiful book is a reminder that hope can nest in unexpected surroundings. -- James Smart * Guardian *[The] master of the long-form comics… This is a picture book of an odd and eerie beauty. * National Geographic Traveler *[It] makes an eloquent case for what comics can say by refusing to say anything, at least with language… Obviously beautiful… The story is elegantly expressed by the form… I can’t think of many non-graphic novels published this year that match the emotional force and formal deftness of [Cormorance]. -- James Kidd * Literary Review *Fantastic… A bereavement for a child must be utterly devastating, confusing and forever haunting, and I think Nick approaches this subject in a very clever and thoughtful way… The momentum pulls you through the narrative, leading you to fantastic pull-out spreads of natural wonder. -- Matt Sewell * Birdwatch *
