Book SynopsisThis book provides a comprehensive introduction to international political economy and to the different trade and financial issues in the contemporary international system. The modern international political economy is characterized by globalization of production and finance. This book explains the growth and consequences of globalization from a historical and evolutionary perspective. It explores not only the long-standing issues of trade protectionism and financial stability, but also the newer issues of international labor standards, liberalization of investment regulations, and environmental protection. One of the greatest challenges of financial globalization is the potential for destabilizing national economies through a rapid outflow of capital, as seen recently in East Asia. In this book, the East Asian currency and debt crises are examined in relation to earlier crises in Latin America in the early 1980s and in Mexico in the mid-1990s. It will help readers to understand how politics and economics interact to produce the rules and structures of international political economy, and also to better appreciate the contemporary issues, crises, and challenges in international political economy.Table of ContentsIntroduction to international political economy; international trade - from the Gatt to the WTO; international monetary relations -Bretton Woods and beyond; protectionism, regionalism and the global economy; the transition economies - Russia and China; international debt crises; political economy of foreign investment; the political economy of environment management; the political economy of international labour standards.

Book SynopsisSince 1962, economists have used the 'gravity equation' in international trade to explain empirically bilateral international trade flows, and have since more recently adopted the gravity model to explain foreign direct investment stocks. Motivated by its empirical success, Jeffrey H. Bergstrand provided one of the earliest formal theoretical foundations for the gravity equation in international trade in 1985. Since then, the gravity equation has become a fundamental element of international trade theory, empirical work, and policy analysis, especially of the effects of economic integration agreements and tariffs on trade flows and welfare. Understanding Globalization Through the Lens of Gravity is a curated collection of Bergstrand's published papers over the 30 years since his first paper on the theme of gravity. In four parts, the 17 papers span topics such as the determinants of international trade flows, economic determinants of free trade agreements, estimating the effects of economic integration agreements on trade flows, and economic determinants of multinational firms' foreign direct investment stocks, foreign affiliate sales and governments' bilateral investment treaties.

Book SynopsisThis is a book on the Belt and Road Initiative, written from an unusual perspective — it is written by someone who was born in India but raised in Singapore; who has never spent a day of schooling in the greater China (Mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) but has Chinese heritage; who eventually built a long and distinguished career in the West. With such an atypical background, he took an off-the-beaten-path approach by asking the fundamental question of how such an important initiative, began entirely by China, can deeply impact and transform the millennium mindset of Chinese.Such a transformation of the Chinese shall render a new definition of what a 'powerful nation' in the 21st century should be, for the betterment of humanity. This is unlike the one made by Western civilization for many centuries since the Renaissance days. Three main outcomes of the BRI have been embedded directly or indirectly throughout the book: Supercontinent, Neo-Renaissance and Cultural Communications. The author felt that these three outcomes are the possible mitigation for the world in the 21st century, facing existential challenges.Related Link(s)

  • Civilization And Governance: The Western And

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Civilization And Governance: The Western And

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe rapid rise of emerging economies has produced deep-ranging changes in the global order during recent decades. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the bipolar confrontation of the Cold War seemed to be replaced by a universalized model of political liberalism and economic neo-liberalism. In recent years, however, rising nationalism and protectionism indicate the end of unfettered globalization, a looming crisis of liberal democracy, and a return to ideologies of 'systemic competition', especially vis-a-vis China.Against this background, this volume takes a fresh look at the evolution of governance models in Western and non-Western civilizations — Africa, India, China, and the Muslim world in particular. These models have been largely self-contained and without intensive interaction for a long time. In the wake of globalization, systems, ideologies, and political values have become part of global discourse, eventually turning into what Samuel Huntington called a 'clash of civilizations.'The chapters in this volume offer perspectives on the diversity of civilizations of governance as a base for a new multilateralism in the global context. The contributions explore relevant theoretical concepts of transnational governance, law, and multiple modernity. The empirical focus is on analyzing different governance systems in non-Western civilizations and Europe, including national states and transnational institutions, traditions, and networks. The volume assembles papers presented at the 2019 International Conference of the Institute of Public Policy at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China. The contributions and the introductory framework have been updated to reflect the unexpected and unprecedented challenges from the coronavirus pandemic and the related economic and social crises.

  • Rise Of The New Economic Powers And The Changing

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Rise Of The New Economic Powers And The Changing

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the catching-up process of a group of large emerging markets: the New Economic Powers. This process is extremely robust and should be considered as the defining trend of our age, resulting in a pivotal change in world economics and politics. The outcome is that the West cannot dominate the world as it did in the previous 200 years. Today's world is pluralistic, and the larger emerging markets are becoming increasingly influential. That is the new reality, which at times caused, and will cause, further discomfort and uncertainty in the West. In the eight chapters, the viewpoints on globalization of nine New Economic Powers are discussed. Each chapter is an essential element in understanding the process of globalization and the role the New Economic Powers play in it. Essentially, their views are guided by a fundamental different look about the role of the market and the government in society, compared to what we see in the West. The New Economic Powers understand the power of the market to create prosperity, but at the same time emphasize the need for government interference. This delicate balance is particularly visible with respect to their international trade and investment policies, which bring them in conflict with Western countries and multilateral institutions such as the WTO and the IMF. The book helps the reader to understand the fundamental choices made by policymakers in the New Economic Powers.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis open access book analyses Iberian expansion by using knowledge accumulated in recent years to test some of the most important theories regarding Europe’s economic development. Adopting a comparative perspective, it considers the impact of early globalization on Iberian and Western European institutions, social development and political economies. In spite of globalization’s minor importance from the commercial perspective before 1750, this book finds its impact decisive for institutional development, political economies, and processes of state-building in Iberia and Europe. The book engages current historiographies and revindicates the need to take the concept of composite monarchies as a point of departure in order to understand the period’s economic and social developments, analysing the institutions and societies resulting from contact with Iberian peoples in America and Asia. The outcome is a study that nuances and contests an excessively-negative yet prevalent image of the Iberian societies, explores the difficult relationship between empires and globalization and opens paths for comparisons to other imperial formations.Trade Review“The description of the Habsburg defensive barrier against the Ottoman Empire, as well as a section comparing and contrasting the Ottoman and Iberian empires, are innovative as well as informative; most researchers limit their focus to the English and sometimes the French empires. The fact that this is an open-access book electronically makes it an even more valuable addition to the literature.” (Robin Grier, The Journal of Interdisciplinary History, Vol. 51 (1), 2020)“The book provides an excellent graduate-level survey. … Graduate students and scholars rewriting their lecture courses will profit from perusing this ambitious volume.” (Stuart M. Book SynopsisThis book examines China’s new development policies, which seek to reposition China from export platform for a diverse array of low-cost consumer goods to technological leader in sectors linked to advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, e-commerce, and new internet-related production networks oriented to China’s large domestic market. Focusing on the post-2010 period, the book shows how China’s central government programs and reforms (“upgrading from above”) are coupled with a wide variety of local government policies, firm strategies, and domestic economy shifts (“upgrading from below”) that link China’s top-down programs into industrial growth on the ground. Placing China’s current development push within a global value chain (GVC) context shows how Chinese development strategies and the global economy remain intertwined. • Brazil—Japan Cooperation: From Complementarity to

Springer Verlag, Singapore Brazil—Japan Cooperation: From Complementarity to

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is an open access book. Relations between Brazil and Japan progressed dynamically in the 1960s and 1970s, centering on the substantial complementarity between Japan’s needing primary goods to sustain high economic growth and Brazil’s seeking non-hegemonic investment to invigorate its resource potential. Now that this complementarity has lost significance, the two countries are restructuring their relations to protect shared values of democracy, freedom, the rule of law, and the need for maintaining good relations with both China and the United States. Analyzed here is the development of this renewed bilateral relationship in multiple directions: productivity, global environment and health, migration, and triangular cooperation in third countries’ development. Facing the prospect of a declining population, Japan may become more open to international migration, but the experience with Japanese-descent Brazilian workers since the amendment of the migration control law in 1990 presents many lessons and challenges for the symbiosis of multicultural groups. Brazil, for its part, needs to address social inequality. To this end, it is fundamental to improve the quality of work. This book argues that Brazil and Japan can benefit from cooperation in managing those country-specific issues. It also discusses ways that Brazil and Japan can profit from coordinating action on global problems such as greenhouse gas reduction, mitigation of tropical diseases, healthy community building, and high-quality infrastructure for poverty reduction.Table of ContentsIntroduction (Nobuaki Hamaguchi and Danielly Ramos) Part I: Brazil-Japan Cooperation from Global Perspective Chapter 1 Brazil - Japan Relationship: A Partnership? Book SynopsisThis is a book about the politics of the global economy — about how firms prosper by understanding those politics, or fail by misunderstanding them. Understanding the politics of globalization may once have been a luxury; it is now, for most high-level managers, simply a necessity. The book contains cases which can be used by instructors and students to build a framework of analysis that enables them to understand the challenges of international trade and investment and master the opportunities they represent. This framework is based on a systematic evaluation of the informal and formal rules that define markets for goods, services, and capital. These insightful cases allow for evaluation of: the political and economic origins of our current era of globalization and how the rules that constrain and enable firms are changing; the impact of governments' policies and which tools are available for predicting, avoiding, or even employing the long arm of the government; and the influence of informal and formal institutions on opportunities for success in international finance and trade.Table of ContentsThe Emerging Challenge of Globalization: Globalization and the American Model (R H K Vietor & A Veytsman); The Globalization of Production and Branding (J Fear & C-I Knoop); The Domestic Politics of Globalization: Risks, Rewards, and Transitions (R Abdelal); Regulating Retail (G Trumbull & L Gay); Owning and Commercializing Genes (D Spar & C Bebenek); Corruption and Its Discontents (R Abdelal et al.); An American Backlash? Book SynopsisThe phenomenon of South-South FDI flows, particularly those arising from multinational companies from China and India, has generated considerable interest among policymakers, academics and the popular press in recent times. This phenomenon raises several questions such as: What is behind the rise of such intra-regional investment flows? What is the magnitude of such flows, and can they be expected to persist/accelerate over time? What are the challenges faced by emerging market multinationals and the future prospects of intra-Asian FDI flows? This book, written by top scholars from academia, international organizations as well as think tanks, consists of a set of papers focusing on these issues. The book is unique in its coverage — focusing on China, India and Southeast Asia rather than limiting itself to a sub-regional or country-specific focus. The chapters in this book highlight important policy issues but are supported with relevant data and empirics, with rigorous empirical analysis being applied to important practical policy issues. The book also provides pertinent overviews of recent research on the questions explored. While the chapters have been crafted to be able to stand up to academic scrutiny, they are also written in a manner that makes them easily accessible to all policymakers, students and business/financial journalists who are interested in Asia and in the emergence of South-South FDI flows.Table of ContentsIntroduction and Overview: Overview: Explaining the New Surge of Outward Foreign Direct Investment from Asia (N Virgill, R Kumar & R S Rajan); Emerging FDI Trends in Developing Asia (D Aykut); Intra-Asian FDI Flows: Trends, Patterns and Determinants (R Hattari & R S Rajan); Asian Giants (Japan, China and India): Japan's Outward FDI in the Era of Globalization (D Hiratsuka); The Pattern and Magnitude of China's Outward FDI in Asia (S Cheng & R R Stough); Emerging MNCs: Trends, Patterns and Determinants of Outward FDI by Indian Enterprises (N Kumar); FDI from East and South-East Asia: Outward Direct Investment from East Asia: The Experiences of Hong Kong and Taiwan (N Aminian, K C Fung & C C Lin); New Multinationals from Singapore and Thailand: The Political Economy of Regional Expansion (A Goldstein & P Pananond); Outward Foreign Direct Investment: The Malaysian Experience (M Ariff & G P Lopez); Outward Investment Surge in the Midst of Weak Inward Investment: The Indonesian Experience (R Y Siregar & A H Gunawan).

Book SynopsisIn a world of uncertainty and change, current achievements are no guarantee for future survival. Even if the initial chosen set of principles, policies and practices are good, static efficiency and governance would eventually lead to stagnation and decay. No amount of careful planning can assure a government of continual relevance and effectiveness if there is no capacity for learning, innovation and change in the face of ever new challenges in a volatile and unpredictable global environment. This book provides an in-depth look at dynamic governance, the key to success in a world of rapid, increasing globalization and unrelenting technological advancements. If bureaucratic public institutions can evolve and embed the culture and capabilities that enable continuous learning and change, their contributions to a country's socio-economic progress and prosperity would be enormous. The lessons from their efforts in institutionalizing culture, capabilities and change could provide meaningful and valuable insights for transforming organizations in other contexts.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis collection of essays documents and investigates the conflicts in Europe, Russia and China that sparked populist revolts against the established globalist order in the European Union. It shows that the populist surge was not an anomaly. It was a reflection of the internal contradictions of globalism that sparked nationalist resentment inside the EU, and backlashes against Western 'soft power' aspirations in Russia and China. The idealist rhetoric of the globalist dream was persuasive. It lulled many into believing that the movement should not, and could not be stopped until the 2008 global financial crisis started the dream to unwind. The essays in this volume show that globalism is not dead, but will have to reinvent itself to revive.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisHow does globalization in goods and asset markets alter the nature of economic recessions and the choices facing macroeconomic policy makers? This volume presents empirical and theoretical contributions of economist Paul Bergin to this vital question. By a number of metrics, including trade volume and price convergence, national goods markets have become more globally integrated over time. The same is true for asset markets, which today function more as a single global marketplace. Rigorous theoretical models are developed to explore how international integration in these markets provides channels by which shocks driving recession in one country can be transmitted to other countries. These theoretical concepts can shed light on the Great Recession of the last decade, which has been referred to as the first truly global recession. Theory is also brought to bear to explore how these international spillovers and the resulting international co-movement in recessions can create incentives for policy makers to coordinate their monetary and fiscal policies with each other, as they deal with the challenge of managing their national economies.

Book Synopsis'Dr Donghyun Park is a prominent and rare economist in Asia who can combine frontline economic theories, lively data, and real-time policy analyses. Capitalism in the 21st Century is a masterful book by Dr Park, providing a comprehensive understanding of heterogenous trajectories of economies around the globe and more fundamental mechanisms of the modern capitalistic system. This is a 'must-read' for those who are interested in comparative economic systems, global economy, and international development.'Yasuyuki SawadaChief Economist, Asian Development BankProfessor of Economics, University of Tokyo'Donghyun Park makes clear that capitalism gets a bad rap, in large part because of too much emphasis on capital as in financial engineering, and too much emphasis on capitals as in government protectionism. Park argues a compelling case that genuine capitalism, which is about entrepreneurship, is necessary to solve the big problems most people face around the globe.'Adam S PosenPresident, Peterson Institute of International EconomicsGlobal capitalism is currently suffering from an unmistakable malaise, epitomized by wide and growing inequality that is eroding popular support for capitalism. Such anti-capitalist sentiment, coupled with a growing anti-globalization mood, delivered Brexit in a UK referendum and swept Donald Trump to the US presidency. In Capitalism in the 21st Century, internationally well-regarded economist Dr Donghyun Park articulately explains why more capitalism is needed to tackle global problems such as climate change and inhumane poverty. While defending capitalism against its unfair demonization, the author makes a positive case for entrepreneurial capitalism, which creates wealth and jobs as well as drives human progress. According to the author, reforming the financial industry, which has become a self-serving leviathan, and more fundamentally, tweaking the economic role of the government, which stifles growth-promoting entrepreneurship, are critical to restoring the vitality of capitalism. The book is explicitly written in such a way that the general reader without any background in economics or finance can easily understand it.Related Link(s)

Book SynopsisTwo powerful forces measure their strength by acting upon globalization. One of them pushes globalization forward, while the other hinders its advance and promotes its decline. In which of those directions should Latin America move? Uncertainty hinders the region's strategic vision. If the future entails re-launching of globalization, it seems obvious that Latin America should follow along its lines. However, if globalization were to embark on a declining phase and an endangered future, the region would need to look at other options. Latin America, therefore, faces not only a dramatic uncertainty as a result of forces beyond its control, but also needs to anticipate unforeseen events to the best of its abilities, and react to or act upon them. Strategic reflection becomes imperative to manage both uncertainty and the possibility of rapid change. This exercise in strategic reflection implies an immersion in fraught international surroundings, analyzing the forces that push for and against globalization, trying to measure their respective strength, convergence capacity, and potential impact. At the same time, it requires looking into the flaws, weaknesses and contradictions of such forces. With these elements in hand, it will be easier to envisage where the trends are leading to, and by extension, where Latin America may end up standing and which goals it should follow.

Book SynopsisThis multi-volume set focuses on a key region of the world which contains four of the biggest emerging economies, a large number of highly dynamic small- and medium-sized emerging economies, and one of the leading advanced industrial countries. It is a region which contains some of the biggest hydrocarbon and mineral deposits in the world, and some of the most energy- and metal-hungry economies in the world. With half the world's population, it is one of the most dynamic regions of the globe in terms of population movement, providing a key focus of foreign investment, both inwards and outwards, with a high degree of technological dynamism. The region plays a central role in the industrial supply networks of the globe. In four volumes, focusing on, respectively, foreign investment, innovation, energy and migration, the set focuses on each of the main elements in the production system in turn — capital, innovation, raw materials and labour. Volume 1 studies patterns of interchange of financial and direct investment within the region, focusing on governance, the development of supply chains, and technology transfer. In Volume 2, the technology theme becomes dominant, with a special focus on digital technology. It includes technical issues like mobile communications standardisation, developmental dimensions, including the role of clusters and science parks, and political economy issues like the rise of techno-nationalism. Volume 3 turns to energy issues — not just issues of supply and demand, but also key problems of climate change, security and sustainability across the Eurasian and Asian landmass. Volume 4 presents the human dimension, looking at people in movement, as workers, citizens, men, women, or colonisers. Among the key issues discussed are the migration from country to town in China, the ‘greying’ of countries like Japan, the effect of war on migration, marriage migration, human trafficking and the depopulation of the Russian Far East. The set is a must-have for anyone keen to understand the region whose manufacturing core can be described, without exaggeration, as the ‘workshop of the world’ of the twenty-first century.

The benefits and costs of increased trade and financial integration in the world today continue to be hotly debated. The reason globalization is controversial is that the impact of globalization is often nuanced, and theory reveals many possibilities. The impact of globalization on macroeconomic outcomes thus remains an empirical and quantitative question.Levchenko collects, in one volume, the results of a multi-year research program to build heterogeneous firm and sector models for the quantitative evaluation of globalization. The volume explores the impact of globalization on both welfare and macroeconomic fluctuations using these micro-founded quantitative models.Recent advances in international trade have built tractable theoretical models that can be implemented numerically and used to evaluate quantitatively the impact of a variety of phenomena. These models are global in scale — encompassing as many as 80 countries as well as multiple sectors — and at the same time feature rich micro-foundations of firm and technological heterogeneity. This combination means it is now possible to dramatically expand the set of questions that can be answered, in particular regarding the consequences of real-world heterogeneity present in the global economy, both at the firm and sector level.The book uses these frameworks to address the central questions about globalization around the world: the impacts of reductions in trade costs, long-run changes in comparative advantage, and migration of labor, among others. The book aims to provide a unifying perspective that merges traditional theory, econometric evaluation, and quantitative modeling. The running theme of this research program is that in order to understand the macroeconomic impact of globalization, it is essential to measure, and model, the microeconomic heterogeneity in the economy.Table of ContentsSectoral Heterogeneity: Ricardian Productivity Differences and the Gains from Trade (Andrei A Levchenko and Jing Zhang) The Global Welfare Impact of China: Trade Integration and Technological Change (Andrei A Levchenko, Julian di Giovanni and Jing Zhang) Comparative Advantage and the Welfare Impact of European Integration (Andrei A Levchenko and Jing Zhang) The Global Labor Market Impact of Emerging Giants: A Quantitative Assessment (Andrei A Levchenko and Jing Zhang) Space permitting: Comparative Advantage, Complexity, and Volatility (Andrei A Levchenko and Pravin Krishna); Firm Heterogeneity: Power Laws in Firm Size and Openness to Trade: Measurement and Implications (Andrei A Levchenko, Julian di Giovanni and Romain Ranciere) Firm Entry, Trade, and Welfare in Zipf's World (Andrei A Levchenko and Julian di Giovanni) Firms, Destinations, and Aggregate Fluctuations (Andrei A Levchenko, Julian di Giovanni and Isabelle Mejean) Country Size, International Trade, and Aggregate Fluctuations in Granular Economies (Andrei A Levchenko and Julian di Giovanni) Space permitting: A Global View of Cross-Border Migration (Andrei A Levchenko, Julian di Giovanni and Francesc Ortega);

Book SynopsisThis book aims to provide comprehensive empirical and theoretical studies of expanding fandom communities in East Asia through the commodification of Japanese, Korean and Chinese popular cultures in the digital era. Using a multidisciplinary approach including political economy, East Asian studies, political science, international relations concepts and history, this book focuses on a few research objectives. In terms of methodology, it is an area studies approach based on interpretative work, observation studies, policy and textual analysis. First, it aims to examine the closely intertwined relationship between the three major stakeholders in the iron triangle of production companies, consumers and states (i.e., role of government in policy promotion). Second, it studies the interpenetration, adaptation, innovation and hybridization of exogenous Western culture with traditional popular cultures in (North) East Asia. Third, it studies the influence of popular cultures and how cultural products resonate with a regional audience through collective consumption, contents reflective of normative values, the emotive and cognitive appeal of familiar images and social learning as well as peer effect found in fan communities. It then examines how consumption contributes to soft cultural influence and how governments leverage on its comparative advantages and cultural assets for commercial success and in the process augment national (cultural) influence. These questions will be discussed and analyzed and contextualized through the case studies of J-pop (Japanese popular culture), K-pop (Korean popular culture or Hallyu) and Chinese popular culture (including Mando-pop and Taiwanese popular culture).Table of ContentsPreface; Introduction and Background; Historical Memories; Comparative Section; Korea: Korean Popular Culture; Culture War: Korean Wave on the Rise; Mechanics of Popular Culture; Japan: Introduction to the Section on Japan; Particularism within the Context of Universalistic Popular Culture: A Historiographical Survey Approach in the Literature Review of Soft Power in East Asia; Size and Reach of the Japanese Popular Cultural Industry; Centering Akihabara: The Positionality of Tokyo's Pop-cultural Nucleus in Cool Japan Industries and Globalized Fandom Consumption; Observation Studies Fieldwork in Japan from 2011-2015; Spirited Away: Conceptualizing a Film-based Case Study through Comparative Narratives of Japanese Ecological and Environmental Discourses. Book SynopsisThe coronavirus pandemic that broke out in 2019 has finally calmed down in China, after the bungling occasioned by the iron hand of lockdown. But beginning in March 2020, the disaster spread abroad, and at present there is no end in sight. In this work, Qin Hui offers a bracing examination of the impact of coronavirus pandemic on political institutions in both China and the West. Deliberating on the contradiction between "human rights" and "human survival," he contends that China has achieved success in imposing coercive lockdowns to control the virus, but it will be a challenge to prevent the normalization of emergency measures from worsening human right conditions. The West, in contrast, must learn how democracies can efficiently enter a state of emergency and put an end to these measures at the proper time.Trade ReviewQin Hui is one of the most original thinkers and commentators active in China today. In this wide?ranging and meticulously researched book he argues that the COVID?19 pandemic reveals decisive weaknesses in both the Chinese and European/American political systems. While not everyone will agree with Qin's conclusions, the rigor of his arguments, the broad historical and geographical range of his examples, and his commitment to defending human dignity around the world make for a compelling read and challenge all forms of pandemic complacency."- Sebastian Veg, School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS), ParisTable of Contents Foreword by David Ownby Chapter One: What if "Human Rights" Means "No Humans Left"? • The Case for Open Borders

Haymarket Books The Case for Open Borders

Book SynopsisA beautifully-written, broadly accessible, and forthright argument for a solution to the migration crisis: open the gates.Because of restrictive borders, human beings suffer and die. Closed borders force migrants seeking safety and dignity to journey across seas, trudge through deserts, and clamber over barbed wire. In the last five years alone, at least 60,000 people have died or gone missing while attempting to cross a border. As we deny, cast out, and crack down, we have stripped borders of their creative potential — as lines of contact, catalyst, and blend — turning our thresholds into barricades.Brilliant and provocative, The Case for Open Borders deflates the mythology of national security through border lockdowns by revisiting their historical origins; it counters the conspiracies of immigration’s economic consequences; it urgently considers the challenges of climate change beyond the boundaries of narrow national identities. This book grounds its argument in the experiences and thinking of those on the frontlines of the crisis, spanning the world to do so. In each chapter, through detailed reporting, journalist and translator John Washington profiles a character impacted by borders. He adds to those portraits provocative analyses of the economics and ethics of bordering, concluding that if we are to seek justice or sustainability we must fight for open borders. In recent years, important thinkers have begun to urge a profoundly different approach to migration, but no book has made the argument as accessible or as compelling. Washington’s case shines with the multitudinous voices of people on the move, a portrait in miniature of what a world with open borders will give to our common future.Trade Review“A powerful and convincing case for human solidarity and cooperation for which Washington provides a roadmap. Unlike many commentaries and books about the fraught border, he does not leave out the Indigenous communities whose homelands have existed in the area for centuries before the border was violently imposed by the United States in 1848.” —Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, author of Not “A Nation of Immigrants:” Settler-Colonialism , White Supremacy, and a History of Erasure and Exclusion "John Washington makes a strong, eloquent and even inspiring case for the relaxation and ultimately the abolition of border controls." —JM Coetzee"The Case for Open Borders offers an accessible and passionate case against border controls. Highlighting the complex stories and lived experiences of displaced and immobilized migrants in the crosshairs of violent bordering regimes, Washington shows how borders structure global difference across economies and ecosystems and ends with a multi-faceted and air-tight 21 arguments for open borders for people across the political spectrum." —Harsha Walia"John Washington’s The Case for Open Borders is a compelling, empathetic argument, a far-reaching look into the origins of borders. Washington is one of our most thoughtful, creative, and humane journalists, and this new work will make people think differently about what they think they already know, about what divides and unites the world in new, surprising ways. Highly recommended." —Greg Grandin“John Washington provides us with an essential evidence based, politically sophisticated, and ethically compelling tool to address one of the most important issues of our time.” —Alex Vitale, author of The End of PolicingThe Case for Open Borders reveals the extent to which today’s global borders have become, at their very core, irredeemably inhumane. Through riveting reporting and wide-ranging citations and case studies, John Washington deconstructs a host of broken metaphors, facile analogies, and fallacious arguments—deconstructing modern notions of scarcity, enforcement, and “order.” This is essential reading, a powerhouse manual for re-imagining a world without walls." —Francisco Cantú, author of The Line Becomes a River"The Case for Open Borders is an urgently needed and timely appeal for justice for the expanding flows of migrants and refugees falling victim inside a hardened and darkening complex of enforced border walls, perilous waterways, and spirals of razor wire. A fluid blend of historical analysis, investigative journalism, and illustrative storytelling, this book grabs you immediately and turns your attention to these anti-human regimes jutting the global landscape—and won’t let you look away. Read this book that makes the most complete and comprehensive case for opening the borders—and then take action to make it a reality." —Justin Akers Chacón"Perhaps the most profound book you’ll read this year. Washington cleaves through all the cruel obfuscations and militaristic cant that derange our border and immigration politics and offers a better human alternative. Borders will not save us, or our rapidly broiling planet, but Washington's reportorial courage and ethical clarity just might." —Junot DíazTable of ContentsPrelude: What’s at Stake?Chapter One: Abu Yassin and The Friendship DamChapter Two: The Historical ArgumentChapter Three: Shafa and Hard Kinetic SolutionsChapter Four: The Economic ArgumentChapter Five: Never Merely TheaterChapter Six: The Case for Urgency, or The Environmental CaseChapter Seven: What Would Open Borders Look Like?Chapter Eight: How I Came to Open BordersChapter Nine: Josiel and Iron ObelisksChapter Ten: 22 Arguments for Open Borders
