Penguin Putnam Inc Wonderland How Play Made the Modern World
Book Synopsis“A house of wonders itself. . . . Wonderland inspires grins and well-what-d'ya-knows” —The New York Times Book Review From the New York Times–bestselling author of How We Got to Now and Extra Life, a look at the world-changing innovations we made while keeping ourselves entertained. This lushly illustrated history of popular entertainment takes a long-zoom approach, contending that the pursuit of novelty and wonder is a powerful driver of world-shaping technological change. Steven Johnson argues that, throughout history, the cutting edge of innovation lies wherever people are working the hardest to keep themselves and others amused. Johnson’s storytelling is just as delightful as the inventions he describes, full of surprising stops along the journey from simple concepts to complex modern systems. He introduces us to the

The University of Michigan Press Tax Politics in Eastern Europe
Book SynopsisAnalyses the domestic and international factors that drive tax policy in Eastern Europe, beginning with a review of the greatest challenges in the initial creation of the capitalist tax systems, then turning to the evolution of specific tax forms in order to gauge the relative impact of domestic politics on tax policy.Trade ReviewThis is a fascinating argument about the influence of international factors on taxation policy, and a very welcome corrective to prevailing views. The analysis is rigorous and compelling, and of great interest to scholars of post-communist politics, globalization, and fiscal policy." —Anna Grzymala-Busse, University of Michigan"Hilary Appel has written a delightful book clearly distinguishing between influences on tax policy in Eastern Europe. In a surprisingly easy read, she sorts out European integration, global competition, domestic politics, and ideology. This is an interesting, original, differentiated, and substantial piece of work." —Anders Åslund, Peterson Institute for International Economics"This is the first book to systematically examine the variation in policies of Eastern European countries. There is a theoretical contribution to understandings of variation in tax policies, but just as impressive is the in-depth empirical analysis and in particular the data from interviews with key players in the process." —Yoshiko Herrera, University of Wisconsin--Madison

Book SynopsisIn this exciting new book, Rieger and Leibfried argue persuasively for the need to understand developments in welfare and social provision alongside the processes of globalization.Trade Review'This book breaks new intellectual ground showing how the modern welfare state has served as the midwife for globalization. It offers a powerful warning to those who take globalization for granted. What the midwife nutured, she may also help strangle. In the best tradition of social science. "Limits" demonstrates how mastery of the details illuminates the big picture of a world poised between renewal and disaster.' Hugh Heclo, George Mason University, Virginia 'This is an important book in three ways. It is synoptic in providing and interrelated explanation of the post-war rise of welfare capitalism, the pressures of globalization and subsequent welfare state reforem. It is synthetic in its sensitive interweaving of a wide range of literature. And it is illuminating in its depth analysis especially of the US and German cases.' David Soskice, Duke University, North Carolina 'By locating the dilemmas of contemporary social in a broader context at once historical, comparatrive and cultural, this wide-ranging volume sets out the challenges facing policy-makers and scholars. Book SynopsisMost Americans today are aware that jobs are being outsourced to China, India, and other nations at an alarming rate. From factory jobs to white-collar, high-tech positions, the exporting of labor is one of the most controversial issues in America.Yet few people know much about the other end — about the people who are actually working these jobs and how their own lives have been throw into tumult by these new economic forces. Andrew Ross spent a year in China, interviewing local employees and their managers in Taiwan, Shanghai, and the far western provinces. In this engaging and informative book, he shows how the Chinese workforce has inherited many of the same worries as American workers, such as job instability, long hours, and awareness of their own expendability. He reports on the daily reality of corporate free trade and explores the growing competition between China and India. This is an eye-opening exploration of an unseen side of our globalized world.

Book Synopsis Great is no longer good enough. Beyond Great delivers a powerful new playbook of 9 core strategies to thrive in a post-COVID world where all the rules of the game are being re-written. Beyond Great answers to two fundamental questions which face business leaders today in a world shaped by daunting and disruptive technological, economic, and social change. First, what is outstanding performance in this new volatile era? Second, how do we build competitive advantage in a world with new and often uncertain rules? Supported by years of research and hands-on consulting practice, this book presents a comprehensive framework for building a high performing, resilient, adaptive, and socially responsible global company. The book begins by taking an incisive look at these disruptive forces transforming globalization, including economic nationalism; the boom in data flows and digital commerce; the rise of China; heightened public concerns about capitalism and the environment; and the emergence of borderless communities of digitally connected consumers. Distilled from the study of hundreds of companies and interviews with dozens of business leaders, the authors have distilled nine core strategies – the new winning playbook of the 21st century. Beyond Great argues that business leaders today must lead with a new kind of openness, flexibility and light-footedness, constantly layering in new strategies and operational norms atop existing ones to allow for 'always-on' transformation. Leaders must master a whole new set of rules about what it takes to be 'global,' becoming shapeshifters adept at handling contradiction, multiplicity, and nuance. This book will show them how.

Chelsea Green Publishing Co Oneness vs. the 1%: Shattering Illusions, Seeding
Book SynopsisWith a new epilogue about Bill Gates’s global agenda and how we can resist the billionaires’ war on life “This is what globalization looks like: Opportunism. Exploitation. Further centralization of power. Further disempowerment of ordinary people. . . . Vandana Shiva is an expert whose analysis has helped us understand this situation much more deeply.”—Russell Brand Widespread poverty, social unrest, and economic polarization have become our lived reality as the top 1% of the world’s seven-billion-plus population pushes the planet―and all its people―to the social and ecological brink. In Oneness vs. the 1%, Vandana Shiva takes on the billionaire dictators of Gates, Buffet, and Mark Zuckerberg, as well as other modern empires like Big Tech, Big Pharma, and Big Ag, whose blindness to the rights of people, and to the destructive impact of their construct of linear progress, have wrought havoc across the world. Their single-minded pursuit of profit has undemocratically enforced uniformity and monocultures, division and separation, monopolies and external control―over finance, food, energy, information, healthcare, and even relationships. Basing her analysis on explosive facts, Shiva exposes the 1%’s model of philanthrocapitalism, which is about deploying unaccountable money to bypass democratic structures, derail diversity, and impose totalitarian ideas based on One Science, One Agriculture, and One History. Instead, Shiva calls for the resurgence of: Real knowledge Real intelligence Real wealth Real work Real well-being With these core goals, people can reclaim their right to: Live Free. Think Free. Breathe Free. Eat Free.Trade Review“All of us who care about the future of Planet Earth must be grateful to Vandana Shiva. Her voice is powerful, and she is not afraid to tackle those corporate giants that are polluting, degrading and ultimately destroying the natural world.”—Jane Goodall, UN Messenger of Peace“Her fierce intellect and her disarmingly friendly, accessible manner have made her a valuable advocate for people all over the developing world.”—Ms. magazine“A rock star in the worldwide battle against genetically modified seeds.”—Bill Moyers“Shiva is a burst of creative energy, an intellectual power.”—The Progressive“One of the world’s most prominent radical scientists.”—The Guardian

Two powerful forces converged to shift global development in the last three decades from the West to the East and Asia. These same forces now make Africa the "construction site of the century." Africa in the decade 2040- 2050 will have a population of 2.5 billion people. Together with China and India, Africa will surely affect our planet's future! The OECD stated that the first transformation is " ... the most important shift in the history of humanity; "the second marks the emergence of new forms of human civilization ... This book documents these transformations now taking hold in Africa, however incomplete , unequal and difficult. But these changes are robust and decisive. In Africa, like everywhere else in the world, strategies and actions must be put into place to seize the moment which is so unique in global history." —Jean-Louis Roy, from the Introduction

Best-selling journalist Antony Loewenstein travels across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Haiti, Papua New Guinea, the United States, Britain, Greece, and Australia to witness the reality of disaster capitalism. He discovers how companies cash in on organized misery in a hidden world of privatized detention centers, militarized private security, aid profiteering, and destructive mining. What emerges through Loewenstein’s reporting is a dark history of multinational corporations that, with the aid of media and political elites, have grown more powerful than national governments. Oxbow Books Mediterranean Archaeologies of Insularity in the
Book SynopsisRecently, complex interpretations of socio-cultural change in the ancient Mediterranean world have emerged that challenge earlier models. Influenced by today's hyper-connected age, scholars no longer perceive the Mediterranean as a static place where "Greco-Roman" culture was dominant, but rather see it as adynamic and connected sea where fragmentation and uncertainty, along with mobility and networking, were the norm. Hence, a current theoretical approach to studying ancient culture has been that of globalization. Certain eras of Mediterranean history (e.g., the Roman empire) known for their increased connectivity have thus been analyzed from a globalized perspective that examines rhizomal networking, cultural diversity, and multiple processes of social change. Archaeology has proven a useful discipline for investigating ancient "globalization" because of its recent focus on how identity is expressed through material culture negotiated between both local and global influences when levels of connectivity are altered. One form of identity that has been inadequately explored in relation to globalization theory is insularity. Insularity, or the socially recognized differences expressed by people living on islands, is a form of self-identification created within a particular space and time. Insularity, as a unique social identity affected by "global" forces, should be viewed as an important research paradigm for archaeologies concerned with re-examining cultural change. The purpose of this volume is to explore how comparative archaeologies of insularity can contribute to discourse on ancient Mediterranean "globalization." The volume's theme stems from a colloquium session that was chaired by the volume's co-editors at the Annual Meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America in January 2017. Given the current state of the field for globalization studies in Mediterranean archaeology, this volume aims to bring together for the first time archaeologists working ondifferent islands and a range of material culture types to examine diachronically how Mediterranean insularities changed during eras when connectivity increased, such as the Late Bronze Age, the era of Greek and Phoenician colonization, the Classical period, and during the High and Late Roman imperial eras. Each chapter aims to situate a specific island or island group within the context of the globalizing forces and networks that conditioned a particular period, and utilizes archaeological material toreveal how islanders shaped their insular identities, or notions of insularity, at the nexus of local and global influences.Table of ContentsPreface About the Authors Abstracts 1. University of Pennsylvania Press Globalization: The Crucial Phase
Book SynopsisThroughout human history, the rate of world population growth overall has been outpaced by the rate of urban population growth. Right now, more the half the world's population lives in cities, and that proportion will only increase in the next fifty years. Rapid urban growth accelerates the exchange of ideas, the expansion of social networks, and the diversity of human interactions that accompany globalization. The present century is therefore the crucial phase, when the world's increasing interconnectedness may give rise to innovation and collaboration or intensify conflict and environmental disaster. Bringing together scholars of anthropology and social science as well as law and medicine, Globalization: The Crucial Phase presents a holistic and comprehensive understanding of the way the world is changing. The contributors reveal the changing scale of social, economic, and financial diversity, examine the impact of globalization on the environment, health, and nutrition; and consider the initiatives to address the social problems and opportunities that arise from global migration. Collectively, these diverse interdisciplinary perspectives provide an introduction to vital research and policy initiatives in a period that will bring great challenges but also great potential.
