  • Song and Social Change in Latin America

Rlpg/Galleys Song and Social Change in Latin America

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSong & Social Change in Latin America offers seven essays from a diverse group of scholars on the topic of music as a reflection of the many social-political upheavals throughout Latin America from the 20th century to the present. Topics covered include: the Tropicália movement in Brazil, the Nueva Canción in Central America, Rock in Mexico, Argentina, Chile and Peru, the Vallenato in Colombia, Trova in Cuba, and urban music of Puerto Rico in the mid-20th century. The collection also includes five interviews from prominent and up-and-coming musicians Ruben Blades, Roy Brown, Habana Abierta, Ana Tijoux, and Mare representing a variety of musical genres and political issues in Central America, the Caribbean, South America, and Mexico.Trade Review[This book] is a must-read for all those interested in building an emancipatory politics of the twenty first century. It opens a poetics of possibility which shines new light on the importance of taking seriously the cultural, the popular and the everyday in social change and political transformation. The collection takes us on a journey that crosses geographical, cultural, political and epistemological borders. . . .[The book's] playful use of form, combining traditional scholarly analysis of song with six interviews with musicians . . . contributes to its ability to stimulate the critical imagination and to open emancipatory horizons. The thirteen unique contributions highlight some of the generic ways in which song-poetry facilitates social change. . . .This volume is to be actively and tenderly explored. Through an embodied act of reading we can become active interlocutors with the text, listening to the traditions discussed. Through savouring the text in this way, we enter a dialogue of knowledges that engages our head, heart, body and imagination. Song and Social Change in Latin America transgresses borders. For this reason it is a gem. * Bulletin of Latin American Research *Like a patchwork quilt, the book offers its readers insights into a variety of historical situations and geographical locations, all characterized by similar, though by no means identical, political circumstances. It shows readers a mosaic of various ways in which music has been deployed to chronicle, contest, and transform historical developments in Latin America between 1950 and 2000.... Given its wide-ranging disciplinary scope, accessible presentation, and the absence of unduly technical musical analysis, this book has the potential to appeal to a broad readership. It will be of interest to historians as a guide to ways of appreciating more deeply the role of music in the making and changing of history; to scholars of popular music and ethnomusicologists interested in the specific impact and role of music in its respective social and geographical context; to literary and Spanish studies scholars and even to religious studies scholars, given that some of the contributors have also incorporated analyses of religion and theological movements in the region into their discussion.... This volume underlines the benefits of academic interaction across disciplinary boundaries. Historians, ethnomusicologists, and literary and cultural studies scholars stand to benefit greatly from the deeper understanding of historical and social contexts that greater engagement with music could facilitate. * H-Net: Humanities and Social Science Reviews Online *Song and Social Change in Latin America, edited by Lauren Shaw, is an accessible, interdisciplinary collection. * Latin American Research Review *With a light hand, Lauren Shaw and the contributors to her edited collection, Song and Social Change in Latin America, wonderfully interpret the importance of song in postwar Latin American history, linking it to experiences of work, family, protest, and migration. The collection, which includes interviews with a number of musicians, reads like a poem or the liner notes to the soundtrack of a generation that took to heart Emma Goldman’s insistence that to be a revolutionary meant to affirm ‘life and joy’ though music and dance. -- Greg Grandin, New York UniversityThis volume presents useful documentation and perspectives on an important dimension of modern Latin American culture. Through song texts, scholarly interpretations, and revealing interviews with articulate artists, it provides much insight into an important chapter in the cultural history of the Americas, from Argentina to the Bronx. -- Peter L. Book SynopsisAristide Cavaillé-Coll (1811-1899) is often referred to as the greatest organ builder of all time. The pipe-organ, being the most complicated musical instrument mechanically and tonally, as well as the most expensive, adds significantly to that world''s greatest designation. The talents required to be such a person range far from music-making to advanced physics, architecture, and engineering. That, plus the obvious knack to raise vast sums of money. Cavaillé-Coll''s Monumental Organ Project for Saint Peter''s, Rome: Bigger Than Them All, by Ronald Ebrecht, is the story of the quest to build the largest-ever mechanical-action organ in the biggest church at the time. Cavaillé-Coll''s model for that organ and the book he wrote outlining his proposal are the core of Ebrecht''s discussion. Cavaillé-Coll bestrode a century as well as an art-form. His century complicated the project with the most intricate, intractable problems. Saint-Peter''s Square, now a part of the Vatican City State, Trade ReviewIn Mr. Ebrecht’s book we have the first exhaustively researched and documented account of a plan to build the world’s largest organ in the world’s most famous church. This is a premium resource for students and researchers at the intersection of popular music and politics. Overall, it is an eye-opening and enjoyable work." -- Amin Hashemi * Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication *Table of ContentsContents and Abstracts1The Politics of Music chapter abstractThis chapter provides the historical and political context for an understanding of the issue of music in post-revolutionary Iran. It narrates the process of the Islamization of Iranian politics after the revolution and the problematic of music within Islamic tradition, and posits music as an alternative public sphere. It also provides short overviews of the history of Persian music, music education in Iran, as well as government regulations on music and female musicians, in particular. 2The Nightingale Rebels chapter abstractChapter Two offers insight into the status of music in the immediate years before the revolution and goes on to highlight the trajectory of Iran's preeminent vocalist of Persian classical music, Mohammad Reza Shajarian. It delves into discussions about Persian art music versus popular music, pop music in Shah-era Iran, evolving forms of poetic protest in twentieth-century Iran, and the important role of radio both for Persian classical music as well as for the making of Shajarian. 3The Musical Guide: Mohammad Reza Shajarian chapter abstractThis chapter follows Mohammad Reza Shajarian's trajectory from a "revolutionary" singer and one of the most prominent voices of the Chavosh group—at the onset of the 1979 revolution—to a vocalist whose "popular" politics are increasingly at odds with those of the new state. It provides the necessary background for an understanding of evolutions in state policy and media technology before returning to a closer look at Shajarian's carefully charted repertoire of resistance. As he breaks into open opposition to state policy following the 2009 Green Uprising, he is increasingly portrayed as a lowly entertainer and traitor by hardline state media. 4Revolution and Ruptures chapter abstractChapter Four examines the approach of the new state and its leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini to music, and to cultural policymaking more generally. Initially Khomeini had pronounced music forbidden, but what did he mean by "music," and how did "music" come to be permitted eventually? What Islamic traditions have Islamic Republic officials abided by for their understanding of music's permissibility? This chapter also examines the musical fare on state media during the revolution's first decade, and provides an in-depth look at the official structures that regulate music in the Islamic Republic. 5Opening the Floodgates to Pop Music: Alireza Assar chapter abstractThis chapter tells the as yet untold story of the creation of state-approved pop music in Islamic Iran, as shared by the officials and musicians at the center of its making. Pop music, once banned because the new state perceived it as representing the cultural promiscuity of Shah-era Iran, was greenlighted and broadcast from within conservative state media toward the end of the 1990s, following President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani's reconstruction period. This chapter presents the musicians that spearheaded this process. It highlights the work of one of the most popular stars among post-revolutionary Iran's first generation of pop singers, Alireza Assar, and argues that his projection of an alternative religiosity in contradistinction to the state's dogmatic Islam attracted Iran's post-1980–88 war youth. 6The Rebirth of Independent Music chapter abstractChapter Six examines the rebirth of independent music in post-revolutionary Iran, which flourished during the terms of reformist President Mohammad Khatami and his government's more liberal music policy. The chapter narrates the beginnings of rock and fusion music starting in the late 1980s and onward to Iran's "first" semi-public underground rock concert, as well as the importance of the webzine Tehranavenue in bringing to light Iran's active underground music scene. The chapter follows the trajectory of the musician Mohsen Namjoo in delineating these processes. 7Purposefully Fālsh: Mohsen Namjoo chapter abstractThis chapter is a study of the coming of age of the alternative musician Mohsen Namjoo, and his struggles to emerge as a musician under politically repressive circumstances. It narrates his cultivation of a discourse of absurdist nihilism, which finds great resonance with a community of post-ideological cynics, as well as his rhetorical and musical iconoclasm. It traces his arc from a student struggling to make it as a musician in Iran to his emigration and self-stated decision to break his "self-censorship" following the 2009 unrest. 8Going Underground chapter abstractChapter Eight proceeds in the book's chronological treatment of music in post-revolutionary Iran to discuss the changes in cultural policy from the more liberal government of Mohammad Khatami to that of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. This transition coincided with a period of great technological transformation around 2005, when the impact of new media was changing the face of music production, distribution, and consumption in Iran. It then goes on to describe discussions of the category of underground music, how it is defined and categorized internally, and the government's reckoning with this new reality. 9Rap-e Farsi: Hichkas chapter abstractThis chapter delves deeper into the underground music scene by foregrounding one of its best-known performers, Soroush Lashkary, aka Hichkas. It discusses categorizations of Rap-e Farsi and the coming of age of Hichkas, the "Godfather of Rap-e Farsi," from a middle-class kid in Tehran to a household name. The chapter also analyzes the generational differences between Namjoo and Hichkas, and how these differences are reflected in their music. It further explores the music of Hichkas, which draws on an old Iranian honor ethic to find traction with its listeners. 10The Music of Politics chapter abstractChapter Ten narrates developments in music during the 2009 Green Uprising, and draws comparisons to musical trajectories at the time of the 1979 revolution, as discussed in Chapters One and Two. It also discusses the election of President Hassan Rouhani as a continuation of the political sentiments of the Green Movement, and proceeds to narrate more recent musical developments. The chapter then offers some conclusions on the bigger questions in the book about expressions of joy, freedom, and political repression.

Book SynopsisRap music was born in America in the early 1980s. Over the last decade it has not only grown in popularity within the United States, with rap music soaring to the top of the music charts, but it has also influenced other cultures around the world. Black, Blanc, Beur is about the emergence and growing notoriety of rap music and hip-hop culture in the French-speaking world (France, Quebec, and Western Africa). It provides an introduction to many forms of expression of hip-hop cultures (rap music, hip-hop dance, and graffiti/tagging). Since its arrival in France, rap music experienced immediate and ever-growing success, going from an underground sound to becoming the second largest market in the world after the United States. Just as American rap crossed borders, French rap influenced artists in the rest of the Francophone world. In addition to a foreword by Adam Krims, a noted rap authority, this volume has contributions by some of the most renowned hip-hop scholars on both sides of theTrade ReviewThe first book in English devoted entirely to Francophone rap, and as such aims at filling an important gap…the wide range of relevant approaches used in most of the essays, as well as the variety of issues discussed by their authors are worth, I think, an attentive reading. * Notes: Quarterly Journal of the Music Library Association *A valuable addition to the growing body of academic literature in English on non-Anglophone hip-hop outside the USA. * European Journal Of Communication *This interdisciplinary volume should make the field of French/francophone hip-hop more accessible to Anglophone readers, particularly those who may wish to embark upon comparative studies of hip-hop culture around the world. * Modern and Contemporary France *...a very useful work for future research on the ethnology of hip-hop. * Anthropologie Et Sociétés, Vol. 30, No. 2 (2006) *...for those among us who enjoy teaching popular music in our French classes to increase student vocabulary, improve student pronunciation, and introduce students to contemporary Francophone culture, Black, Blanc, Beur provides the essential background information for the instructor. Book SynopsisThis resource is an interesting look at how European culture, particularly European music, related to the social and cultural experiences of the residents of ninteenth-century Rio de Janeiro. The focus is on how Cariocas (residents of Rio de Janeiro) responded to and often imitated different musical styles imported from Europe. After introducing the local musical setting and showing how musical life in imperial Rio de Janeiro reflected Parisian models, the author discusses the importation of operatic repertory, the use of German classical music as the basis of an elite social class, the role of European music in Brazilian theater, and finally, the emergence of a national music. Overall, this study reveals European music as a powerful force in the internal processes of political, cultural, social, and ethnic negotiations during the 19th century government of Emperor Pedro II. Musicologists, Latin American historians, and anyone with an interest in urban studies will find much of interest in this book.Trade ReviewThe process of reconstructing a distant past, be it diachronically or synchronically, is like panning for gold dust in a pile of sand: the task is painstaking, but the result can be highly rewarding. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewLevi (Royal Holloway, Univ. of London, UK) and Scheding (Univ. of Southampton, UK) present essays that explore issues and questions brought about by the unwilling, sometimes violent, dislocation of people or peoples. Music lends itself to such study, perhaps because of its temporal, ephemeral nature. Ethnomusicology has long been the domain for studying the Other but primarily as related to location. Many of the essays in this book turn the tables on that Otherness, locating it not in a geographical place but instead in the displaced person or persons, who become that Other in dislocation. Though the issues the book raises originate in a music context, they reveal a great deal about migration, dislocation, and acculturation. The editors include considerations of the effect of the Nazi stigmatization and exile of Jews, the struggle of displaced philosopher Theodore Adorno to define German-ness and his subsequent renunciation of the absolute, the equating of the mind/body dichotomy with the contrast of music (mental) and dance (physical), and "displacement" of a musical work through arrangements for other instruments. This collection raises timely questions not previously examined, questions relevant to the study of music and to the study of an increasingly mobile, diverse, 21st-century society. Book SynopsisThe grand narratives of European music history are informed by the dichotomy of placements and displacements. Yet musicology has thus far largely ignored the phenomenon of displacement and underestimated its significance for musical landscapes and music history. Music and Displacement: Diasporas, Mobilities, and Dislocations in Europe and Beyond constitutes a pioneering volume that aims to fill this gap as it explores the interactions between music and displacement in theoretical and practical terms. Contributions by distinguished international scholars address the theme through a wide range of case studies, incorporating art, popular, folk, and jazz music and interacting with areas, such as gender and post-colonial studies, critical theory, migration, and diaspora. The book is structured in three stagessilence, acculturation, and theorythat move from silence to sound and from displacement to placement. The range of subject matter within these sections is deliberately hybrid and mirrors the eclectic nature of displacement itself, with case studies exploring Nazi Anti-Semitism in musical displacement; musical life in the Jewish community of Palestine; Mahler, Jewishness, and Jazz; the Irish Diaspora in England; and German Exile studies, among others. Featuring articles from such scholars as Ruth F. Davis, Sean Campbell, Jim Samson, Sydney Hutchinson, and Europea series co-editor Philip V. Bohlman, the volume exerts an appeal reaching beyond music and musicology to embrace all areas in the humanities concerned with notions of displacement, migration, and diaspora.Trade ReviewLevi (Royal Holloway, Univ. of London, UK) and Scheding (Univ. of Southampton, UK) present essays that explore issues and questions brought about by the unwilling, sometimes violent, dislocation of people or peoples. Book SynopsisFrom Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, this book presents an up-to-date collection of national anthems from the 200 sovereign countries in the world, providing music sheets arranged for piano, lyrics in the original language, and an English translation.Trade ReviewThis revision to the 2003 edition is based upon a greater number and variety of sources than the earlier work, with the aim of providing more accurate content. It incorporates information on alterations to political regimes occurring over the last decade, as such changes have transformed national identities and, in turn, national anthems. Anthems of international organizations and countries of, for example, the former Soviet Union, are also included. Each entry, under five pages, now includes maps, flags, national demographics, and brief anthem histories. As before, lyrics appear in the nation’s dominant language, Latinized; then in the native alphabet; and, finally, in English translation. Sheet music, uniting melody and lyrics, closes each entry. The written material offers enlightening national sketches. * Library Journal *Xing Hang (history, Brandeis Univ.) has expanded the second edition (1st ed., CH, May'04, 41-5040) of this encyclopedia considerably. Book SynopsisRichard Egües and José Fajardo are universally regarded as the leading exponents of charanga flute playing, an improvisatory style that crystallized in 1950s Cuba with the rise of the mambo and the chachachá. Despite the commercial success of their recordings with Orquesta Aragón and Fajardo y sus Estrellas and their influence not only on Cuban flute players but also on other Latin dance musicians, no in-depth analytical study of their flute solos exists. In Cuban Flute Style: Interpretation and Improvisation, Sue Millermusic historian, charanga flute player, and former student of Richard Egüesexamines the early-twentieth-century decorative style of flute playing in the Cuban danzón and its links with the later soloistic style of the 1950s as exemplified by Fajardo and Egües. Transcriptions and analyses of recorded performances demonstrate the characteristic elements of the style as well as the styles of individual players. A combination of musicological analysis and ethnomusicological Trade ReviewLet me begin by saying that Sue Miller's Cuban Flute Style is an extraordinarily comprehensive oeuvre, with respect to both the history and the technique of charanga flute playing. In addition, her book is realized with a broad as well as a thoughtful understanding of the entire tradition on which this style of music is based. ... i read the entire book with rapt attention and avid interest. In fact, at times I was motivated io move perhaps a little more quickly through the text than I ought to have because I would find myself falling under the allure of the next chapter. But such enthusiasm was hardly premature because there is so much to revisit in this book. It will serve as a vital source of reference to flautists, all over the world' for years to come - and not just for those interested in charanga. * Pan: The Journal of the British Flute Society *[F]or all the academic and anthropological research work done in the past 60+ years in the Latin Music field, very few have been successful in conveying the essence of their subject matter. Sue Miller’s remarkable book does not only succeed in its comprehensive approach to introduce and educate both performing flutists and academicians to this wonderful music and its history, she captivates the reader through her passion, love and commitment to the genre. . . .Sue Miller deserves the highest praise for a work of the highest caliber. . . .I declare that Cuban Flute Style is brilliant and without precedent. The research work is thorough and meticulous. The historical narrative of the flute styles and its protagonists is comprehensive, consistent and most importantly, respectful of the music’s tradition and filled with palpable affection. Her improvisation transcriptions and music samples from a wide selection of recordings (most of them commercially released) are accurate and accessible. . . .Sue Miller has created a work that celebrates and guarantees the perpetuation of Charanga and its Cuban Flute Style Tradition for many generations to come. Its historical, cultural, and pedagogical value cannot be overstated. * ARSC Journal *

Book SynopsisThis collection offers the first critical assessment of the music and culture of reggaeton, a popular genre that blends reggae and rap, Spanish-language lyrics, and Latin-Caribbean aesthetics.Trade Review“Reggaeton is a truly important contribution to our understanding of the most pervasive and perhaps most misunderstood Latin musical genre at the turn of the 21st century. The blend of academic and journalistic writings with artistic statements, interviews and visual art offers the reader an extraordinary window into the complex landscape of reggaeton. . . . Raquel Z. Rivera, Wayne Marshall, and Deborah Pacini Hernadez have established the foundation for the rich and productive academic conversation that the genre will still generate.” - Alejandro L. Madrid, Dancecult“This collection of essays is the first attempt to critically engage with the phenomenon, and wisely hedges its bets with a broad collection of writings—earnest academic appraisals are effectively offset by punchy location reportage from Latin America, Q&As with major protagonists and landmark magazine pieces from the music’s early days. . . . [A] largely informative and sometimes exhilarating survey of a multinational phenomenon.” - Derek Walmsley, The Wire“Reggaeton is an excellent collection which itself occasions many surprises. Overall the book is structured in much the same way as its subject (reggaeton), as a series of overlapping, interconnected and often contradictory layers. . . . This book is a tour de force of criticism and analysis which is relevant not only to the study of reggaeton but to the study of popular music in general.” - Cameron White, Transforming Cultures“The admirable book Reggaeton . . . invites us to carefully ‘read’ this extraordinary musical and social phenomenon of our times. . . . The authors in this volume extensively document the crossing of geographic, racial, ethnic and linguistic borders. . . . As the essays in this book skillfully demonstrate, the ‘reggaeton nation’ constantly moves between numerous countries and cities, between Spanish and English, between Caribbean and African American rhythms.” (Translated from the Spanish) - Jorge Duany, El Nuevo Día“I cannot overstate how critically important this volume is. It captures the synergies of a musical and cultural movement that few have seriously grappled with, even as the sounds and styles of reggaeton have dominated the air space of so many urban locales.”—Mark Anthony Neal, author of Soul Babies: Black Popular Culture and the Post-Soul Aesthetic“It’s about time academia dared to include reggaeton. This might mean that we’re finally understanding that all of us are los de atrás (the ones behind): our country, Puerto Rico, and the whole Caribbean. I hope people support this book so it can be translated into Spanish, and kids in Puerto Rico and Latin America can read it. Because we Caribbean people, even if we don’t want to, even if we don’t like it, even if it hurts, we come from behind . . . and there’s a value to that. There’s a beauty to being los de atrás.”—Residente, frontman of the Grammy and Latin Grammy award-winning duo Calle 13“The kinetic contributions in Reggaeton melt false borders—ones wrapped like straitjackets around peoples, knowledges, and cultures—and move the crowd. More than an exciting, exhaustive treatment of this vital musical culture, this anthology is a fine blueprint for engaged cultural scholarship right now.”—Jeff Chang, author of Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation“This anthology opens a chapter in hip-hop history that brings it all back home, back to our transnational Afro-Spanish-speaking countries and diasporas and ’hoods where young people are going through their hip-hop ecstasies and traumas, but in their own language, and in their own unique and hitherto-unknown style.”—Juan Flores, author of From Bomba to Hip-Hop: Puerto Rican Culture and Latino Identity, from the foreword to Reggaeton“Reggaeton is a truly important contribution to our understanding of the most pervasive and perhaps most misunderstood Latin musical genre at the turn of the 21st century.
