Cambridge University Press Multicultural Origins of the Global Economy
Book SynopsisWesterners on both the left and right overwhelmingly conflate globalisation with Westernisation and presume that the global economy is a pure Western-creation. Taking on the traditional Eurocentric Big Bang theory, or the ''expansion of the West'' narrative, this book reveals the multicultural origins of globalisation and the global economy, not so as to marginalise the West but to show how it has long been embedded in complex interconnections and co-constitutive interactions with non-Western actors/agents and processes. The central empirical theme is the role of Indian structural power that was derived from Indian cotton textile exports. Indian structural power organised the first (historical-capitalist) global economy between 1500 and c.1850 and performed a vital, albeit indirect, role in the making of Western empire, industrialisation and the second (modern-capitalist) global economy. These textiles underpinned the complex inter-relations between Africa, West/Central/East/Southeast Trade Review'Building on his past path-breaking work, Hobson lays a historical foundation for a 'non-Eurocentric new Global Political Economy' in this engagingly written book. Teachers will be rewriting their lectures after reading its many fascinating arguments about the role of the 'non-West' in constructing the global economy.' Eric Helleiner, University of Waterloo'Hobson's compelling story takes us beyond Eurocentrism without falling prey to Eastern-centrism, finally offering a proper global-historical account that locates the origins of capitalism and the global economy not in 'the West' nor in 'the East' but in the complex relations in-between. This is a much-needed work of historiographical synthesis and conceptual innovation.' Julian Go, Boston University'This is a masterful and revisionary account of the premodern and global lineages of capitalism. It shows how the complexity of non-European societies and economies shaped their encounter with Europe as well as with each other. A necessary and supple corrective to Eurocentric histories of both modernity and globalization.' Ania Loomba, University of Pennsylvania'… monumental work … Highly recommended.' M. F. Nova Science Publishers Inc The Political Economy of National and Energy
Book SynopsisThe aim of this collective volume is to study the crucial aspects related to the interconnection between the political economy of energy security and national security, which is of great importance globally, due to great volatility and complexity.Several conceptual frameworks regarding the issue of energy security are examined in order to understand the relationships between relevant parameters and then to investigate their implications for national security. Research needs to examine how energy security affects national security of nation states around the world, either as producers or consumers of energy resources. In this volume, the theory of realism is employed for the analysis of such concepts, as it emphasizes the primary importance of any given state and its national security, whereas realism is essentially a political ideology and looks to provide the proper spectrum for further analysis. The fact that the political economy of energy security and the political economy of national security are addressed as separate parts in the literature are among the main drawbacks in our effort to comprehend the issues concerned. The abovementioned results to a dichotomy that affects the ontological and epistemological essence of the two pillars of the issue in question based on our working hypothesis should be addressed in a complementary and interconnected way. Addressing both theoretical concepts and case studies to validate the argument, the authors believe that the academic level of the proposed subject is related to graduate and postgraduate studies.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Border Security: Funding, Technologies and
Book SynopsisIn todays ever-expanding global movement of people border security becomes increasingly important. Stopping the illegal movement of weapons, drugs, and people, while allowing lawful trade and travel, is essential to our nations security and economic prosperity. This book examines the funding, technologies and enforcement used to keep our borders secure. Chapter 1 reviews the critical infrastructure, technology, and personnel funding needed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to enhance our Nations border security. On 25 January 2017, in one of his first acts as President, Donald Trump ordered the immediate construction of a physical wall on the southern border. As reported in chapter 2, Border Patrol agents have rarely recommended building a wall to address the most commonly identified vulnerabilities or capability gaps along the southwest border. More often, agents recommended additional technology and personnel as solutions for securing the border. The U.S. Border Patrol, within the Department of Homeland Securitys (DHS) U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), has made progress deploying surveillance technologya mix of radars, sensors, and camerasalong the southwest U.S. border as described in chapter 3. There is a wave of foreign nationals headed for the U.S. southern border. Chapter 4 discusses the impending arrival of what was initially called an immigrant caravan, which remains a challenge of U.S. border security. The San Diego-based group, Pueblo Sin Fronteras, or People Without Borders, has taken credit for organizing the effort. While they claim to provide humanitarian aid to migrants and refugees, what they are doing now is undermining the rule of law. Chapter 5 highlights the potential vulnerabilities in the visa issuance process. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a component within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), implemented the Visa Security Program (VSP) in 2003. ICE has since deployed officials to certain U.S. embassies and consulates overseas to strengthen the visa review process by working with Department of State (State) consular officers in reviewing applications.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Genocide and Geopolitics of the Rohingya Crisis
Book SynopsisSet in the South and Southeast Region, this book attempts to analyse the implications of both genocides perpetrated on the unarmed Rohingya minority community in Myanmar, and the geopolitics of the powers of the region that deter the resolution of this festering problem. The book highlights the helplessness of the UN system to take any punitive actions against the perpetrators (ie: the security forces of Myanmar) given that China, India and Russia, who are taking the side of Myanmar for geopolitical reasons. They have exercised their vetoes at the UNSC to such an action. The book describes the key players in this region, their interests, compulsions and imperatives, and covers different strategies launched by the United States, China, India, Japan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar that tend to stall the resolution of the process or even refusing to take back the Rohingya refugees -- 1.1 million of them including children and women -- now languishing in the cramped camps inside Bangladesh. Most of these refugees were forced to flee their ancestral homes after a ghastly genocide meted out to them in October 2017. Such massacres have been taking place in a series of violence starting from 1977-8. This issue has huge regional security implications. The ugly heads of insurgency are also looming large. This has turned out to be a huge burden on the economy and environment of Bangladesh. However, different donor agencies including UNHCR are providing relief and rehabilitation. The author provides ramifications and reflections in the form of scenario development and suggesting certain options -- uniqueness of this book -- on this festering humanitarian issue.Table of ContentsList of Figures; List of Abbreviations; Introduction; Organization of the Book; Background History of the Rohingyas in Arakan: From the Kingdom of Arakan to the Colonial Era; Relevant Burmese Modern History; To Define the Rohingya Problem; Strategic Significance of the Area; 1974 Constitution: A Turning Event in Myanmar History?; Role of the Monks; What Genocide/Crime against Humanity/Ethnic Cleansing Entails; Can the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecute the Perpetrators? 91; Geopolitics Involved; Possibility of Local Insurgency Getting Entrenched; Possibility of Rohingya Going back to Myanmar this Time Round; Plight of Bangladesh in Sheltering the Rohingyas; Scenario Development; Suggestions: Few Doable; References; About the Author; Index.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Structural Realism and Systemic Geopolitical
Book SynopsisThis book emphasizes the comparative study of theoretical as well as hypothetical issues of structural realism of international relations theory vis-Ã-vis those of systemic geopolitical analysis. Are they scientific fields evolved in parallel, common philosophical and cognitive roots? Could they be used as complementary theoretical tools or their relation is disjunctive and contrapuntal? When decoding the core hypotheses of structural realism and systemic geopolitical analysis, an effort takes place for the sake of the central scientific aim; i.e. the untainted descriptive analysis without ontologically groundless claims. The debate on interstate relations and the framework, on which these are structured, is long-term with its philosophical background detected at the juxtaposition between those referring to "sein" and the others expressing the "sollen". This research struggles to explain the converging and diverging points of view between the neorealist approach of international relations theory and the systemic geopolitical analysis.Table of ContentsForeword by Emeritus Professor Panayiotis Ifestos; Introduction; Ontological References; Structural Realism; Systemic Geopolitical Analysis; Convergences; Divergences; Epistemological and Methodological Contradictions; The Waltzian Programmer and Systemic Geopolitics; An Evolution of the Waltzian Programmer: John Mearsheimers Approach; Concluding Remarks; Bibliography.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Is China Encircling India?
Book SynopsisEncircling India from different flanks is seemingly a key strategic objective of China, apart from others. China needs dominance in this part of the world both for economic and strategic reasons. China wants to regain its lost grandeur that it lost during the ''Century of Humiliation'' on the world stage. Southeast Asia is generally under Chinas influence, by means foul or fair. It could even manage the Philippines after it got a verdict in its favour in the international court on an issue related to the South China Sea. Chinas economic power is impacting its relations with Southeast Asian countries. Given the recent conflict between China and India, India is more likely to align itself with the United States. India is a strong partner in the Quadrilateral Dialogue (QUAD), alongside Japan, the United States, and Australia. The QUAD is getting stronger militarily, and the U.S. has been generous to India, especially under former President George W. Bush, who signed a civil nuclear agreement that set India as a nuclear power. India is likely to become a potent naval force in the Indian Ocean, where China is also making advances. China is now more closely aligned with Russia. The combined forces of China and Russia are a great deterrent to the United States. Added to that, the Bridge and Road Initiative (BRI) is drawing more countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. The coming decade wont be divided by an iron curtain but clearly by two blocks vying for influence. China has huge economic and proximity advantage whereas the United States has its military component and potent alliance powers especially with India and Japan. After the pandemic, the turn of history may be different, so the 21st century scenario development may be problematic as it stands now. That said, the book attempts projection and scenario development extrapolating the vexed issues and events between India and China within the broader framework of Indo-Pacific.

While ISIS has been defeated, it is not clear whether it has disappeared from the region. Book SynopsisThis timely collection offers fresh perspectives on the analysis of the "New Great Game" -- the fight for access to the former Soviet Union's energy resources. Thus far the export of crude oil and natural gas has only been assessed through a geopolitical lens, which oversimplifies the political dynamics of the region and neglects to acknowledge the post-Soviet countries as actors in their own right. Broadening the scope of analysis, this volume brings together insights from various different angles, including the securitisation of energy issues, the formation of post-Soviet energy policies, and the motives of local business and political actors.

Pentagon Press Understanding South China Sea Geopolitics
Book SynopsisThe twenty-first century geopolitics is gradually concentrating on the maritime world with the increase in the global economic interaction in the post liberalization world. The sea lanes of communication are attracting attention with the growing emphasis on economic interactions among the emerging economies with emphasis on military strength, especially in Asia. According to some scholars the twenty-first century global power is shifting from the Atlantic to the Pacific world where the maritime world has historically played significant role. This growing economic interdependencies promoting economic prosperity and resultant military modernization are shaping the geopolitics of Asia today as it is found in East Asia. In this part of the world the geopolitics has been maritime in character and today they are significant with the growing importance of maritime disputes in East and South China Sea among the emerging power China and her neighbours in the region, and with special role of the USA.South China Sea is fast emerging as a major zone of conflict in the East Asian, especially Southeast Asian, geopolitics. Although the soul of the conflict remains the centuries old territorial dispute over possession of some geographical features of this maritime zone, it is gradually transcending the periphery of inter-state territorial feud and emerging as the driving force of an Asian cold war of the twenty-first century. In this context it is important to study the South China Sea geopolitics with reference to its history. The book here is an attempt to study the South China Sea geopolitics of today with reference to its past and investigate its character. The study here does not revolve round the territorial disputes and their historical character and legality but rather attempts to focus on the larger context of traditional intermingling of regional and extra-regional actors shaping the maritime geopolitics there in the past and at present, sometimes independent of the disputes while sometimes in their context. Here reference of India is also made given her growing interest and role in the South China Sea maritime zone.

Pentagon Press Rise of the Indo-Pacific: Perspectives,
Book SynopsisA new concept of `Indo-Pacific` has entered into the geopolitical discourse and the lexicon of International Relations. There is no unanimity of views on the definition of the emerging concept of Indo-Pacific. Yet, Indo-Pacific region as a new geopolitical concept appears to have come to stay.Three major developments have taken place in recent years leading to emergence of the concept of `Indo-Pacific` that does not replace but subsumes the geopolitical construct, hitherto known as the `Asia-Pacific`. The newest development, of course, is the rise of India as an economic powerhouse and influential political actor in world affairs, particularly in Asian affairs. Second most important development is China`s assertive foreign policy and use of military strength to assert its sovereignty on disputed islands in the South China Sea. The third important development is erosion of self-confidence of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that used to display its image as a triumphant political grouping in a region, despite diversity in terms of political system, economic philosophy, religious beliefs and socio-cultural traditions. The present book is a by-product of two days of intense deliberations among large number of scholars on various issues and challenges faced by the countries of the Indo-Pacific region. The book includes the perspectives of major powers in the Indo-Pacific, analyses critical regional security issues, such as sovereignty issues in South China Sea, the rise of QUAD, role of soft power, challenges to ASEAN centrality and regionalism, and examines the non-traditional security threats, such as terrorism, nuclear proliferation, environmental degradation, drugs trafficking and health hazards.

Book SynopsisThe present volume curates papers presented at an international con-ference organized at OUCIP to engage with the oceanic turn in different fields of knowledge embracing Social Sciences, Humanities and, Physical Sciences to project the Indian Ocean as the new frontier of research across various disciplines. The papers are divided into four sections: The Oceanic Reach has papers reflecting on the received knowledge regarding the historical role and reach of the Indian Ocean and providing new insights in the evolving dynamics of the region. The section Literature and Culture has essays reflecting the different trajectories within Humanities and Cultural Studies through which Indian Ocean has stimulated the imagination of scholars, intellectuals, diasporic writers, and culture historians.

Manohar Publishers and Distributors India-South Asia interface: religion, politics
Book SynopsisIndia-South Asia Interface raises the fundamental question: How does one make sense of South Asia? Conventional wisdom defines it primarily in terms of regional and international politics. The failures of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) are emblematic of that wisdom. Marking a departure from such approaches, Partha Ghosh makes the case that more than merely a political construct South Asia must be understood as a shared social consciousness. Through chapters that explore topics such as threats to democracy, religion and politics, the place of Kashmir, different conceptions of regionalism, the roles of America and China, and the issue of refugees and migrants, he demonstrates that there is no escape from reinventing the region from a people's perspective. Only this way can South Asia retrieve its soul and replace its cynicism and despair with expectation and hope. Based primarily on Ghosh's research articles and newspaper columns written over the last five years, the volume can be viewed as an intimate statement of his understanding of the region.

Juggernaut Publication India Versus China: Why They Are Not Friends
Book SynopsisWhy have relations between India and China, which comprise nearly forty per cent of the world's population, been troubled for over sixty years? A war in 1962 was followed by decades of uneasy peace, but in recent years a rising number of serious military confrontations has underlined their huge and growing differences. This book examines these differences in four crucial areas: their perceptions and prejudices about each other; their continuing disagreements over the border; their changing partnerships with America and Russia; and the growing power asymmetry between them, which affects all aspects of their relationship. China demands deference as a Great Power and the dominant country in Asia, while India wants recognition and respect as an equal. With such a deep divide separating the two neighbours, what does the future hold?

Oxford University Press Inc Other One Percent
Book SynopsisOne of the most remarkable stories of immigration in the last half century is that of Indians to the United States. People of Indian origin make up a little over one percent of the American population now, up from barely half a percent at the turn of the millennium. Not only has its recent growth been extraordinary, but this population from a developing nation with low human capital is now the most-educated and highest-income group in the worlds most advanced nation. The Other One Percent is a careful, data-driven, and comprehensive account of the three core processesselection, assimilation, and entrepreneurshipthat have led to this rapid rise. This unique phenomenon is driven byand, in turn, has influencedwide-ranging changes, especially the ongoing revolution in information technology and its impact on economic globalization, immigration policies in the U.S., higher education policies in India, and foreign policies of both nations. If the overall picture is one of economic success, tTrade Review"During the course of their research, Chakravorty, Kapur and Singh have turned up countless new nuggets of information. So much of what we know about people of Indian origin in America is anecdotal that it is a relief to read a definitive interdisciplinary study drawing on data that involve a significant number of people. We learn about a complex group of over two million individuals who are becoming increasingly visible and influential in American public life."-The Indian Express "In this new era of populism, The Other One Percent is a rigorous, fact-based analysis of how cross-border flows of brainy and ambitious people make the world a better place. Politicians and policymakers in both America and in India should make sure they read it."-The Economist "No political issue is hotter than immigration. And no immigrant group has been more successful than Indians in the United States. This landmark work is the first comprehensive study of the Indian immigrant experience. It deserves close attention from all those concerned not just with the future of Indian communities but with America's future."-Larry Summers, former President, Harvard University; former U.S. Treasury Secretary "In the last half-century, Americans of Indian descent epitomize how new waves of immigrants have been renewing our communities and our economy. The Other One Percent adopts a wide-ranging, data-based approach to understanding the fascinating rise of the Indian-American community in the United States. This insightful volume holds valuable lessons for rethinking immigration in the decades to come."-Jon Huntsman, former Governor of Utah and United States Ambassador to China "In The Other One Percent, we get a full, first-ever picture of Indian-Americans, who have recently become among the largest nationality group of new immigrants to the U.S. and are also the most successful by many measures, including education, income and entrepreneurship. To understand how smart, updated immigration policies can harness the advantages of immigration for the U.S. today and into the future, this book offers a compelling case-in-point and call-to-action for Congress."-Doris Meissner, former Commissioner of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service; Senior Fellow, Migration Policy Institute "The Other One Percent is a methodologically sophisticated, interdisciplinary treatment of the Indian diaspora. It combines scrupulous regard for data, with a deep historical insight, and sociological imagination to produce a deeply engrossing work. It provides a riveting and textured portrait of the Indian diaspora, its formation, its political preferences, its social and economic base. The book will unsettle many entrenched assumptions and open up a large research agenda."-Pratap Bhanu Mehta, President, Centre for Policy Research, New DelhiTable of ContentsAcknowledgements PREFACE CHAPTER 1. Oxford University Press Diversity Violence and Recognition
Book SynopsisWhen considering strategies to address violent conflict, scholars and policymakers debate the wisdom of recognizing versus avoiding reference to ethnic identities in government institutions. In Diversity, Violence, and Recognition, Elisabeth King and Cyrus Samii examine the reasons that governments choose to recognize ethnic identities and the consequences of such choices for peace. The authors introduce a theory on the merits and risks of recognizing ethnic groups in state institutions, pointing to the crucial role of ethnic demographics. Through a global quantitative analysis and in-depth case studies of Burundi, Rwanda, and Ethiopia, they find promise in recognition. Countries that adopt recognition go on to experience less violence, more economic vitality, and more democratic politics, but these effects depend on which ethnic group is in power. King and Samii''s findings are important for scholars studying peace, democracy, and development, and practically relevant to policymakers attempting to make these concepts a reality.Trade ReviewThis is a well-researched study with findings that are valuable for anyone interested in the development of peace and democracy. Recommended. All levels. * T. Davis, Lake Erie College, CHOICE *This is an incredibly important book. Scholars will find a novel theory of the reasons for ethnic recognition, as well as a convincing and sophisticated argument drawing on a wealth of original material. As for policy-makers, they will find guidance on how to make the 'right' choice when faced with the dilemma of ethnic recognition. Therefore, King & Samii's advice may impact millions of lives for the better." -Séverine Autesserre, author of Trouble with the Congo, Peaceland, and The Frontlines of PeaceOne of the most fateful decisions facing peace-makers and state-builders in ethnically divided societies is whether to formally recognize the rights and powers of cultural groups, or whether individual rights approaches offer a better way to simultaneously prevent ethnic discrimination and demobilize invidious ethnic rivalries. Grounded in deep theoretical and empirical work, King and Samii convincingly explain the conditions under which ethnic group recognition or non-recognition is likely to produce the better outcome." -Jack Snyder, Robert and Renée Belfer Professor of International Relations, Columbia UniversityTable of ContentsList of illustrations List of Abbreviations Part 1 Chapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: A Theory of Recognition Part 2 Chapter 3: Trends in Ethnic Recognition Chapter 4: Under what conditions is recognition adopted? Oxford University Press The New Imperialism
Book SynopsisPeople around the world are confused and concerned. Is it a sign of strength or of weakness that the US has suddenly shifted from a politics of consensus to one of coercion on the world stage? What was really at stake in the war on Iraq? Was it all about oil and, if not, what else was involved? What role has a sagging economy played in pushing the US into foreign adventurism and what difference does it make that neo-conservatives rather than neo-liberals are now in power? What exactly is the relationship between US militarism abroad and domestic politics? These are the questions taken up in this compelling and original book. Closely argued but clearly written, ''The New Imperialism'' builds a conceptual framework to expose the underlying forces at work behind these momentous shifts in US policies and politics. The compulsions behind the projection of US power on the world as a ''new imperialism'' are here, for the first time, laid bare for all to see. This new paperback edition contains Trade ReviewReview from previous edition 'The New Imperialism' merits the widest possible public. Bloomsbury Publishing (UK) Great Power Politics in the Fourth Industrial Revolution
Book SynopsisGlenn Diesen is Professor in the faculty of World Economy and International Affairs of the National Research University - Higher School of Economics in Moscow. His latest books are The Decay of Western Civilisation and Resurgence of Russia: Between Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft (2018); Russia's Geoeconomic Strategy for a Greater Eurasia (2017); and EU and NATO relations with Russia: After the collapse of the Soviet Union (2015).Trade ReviewThis book asks some of the big questions of our time, above all the effect of technological change on social order and international relations. This ambitious and original study provides some of the answers, although it argues that we are only at the beginning of a period of fundamental and accelerating change to accustomed patterns of state-society relations, economics, geopolitics and, ultimately on citizenship and political order. Written from a ‘global’ perspective, this erudite and engaging work is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of humanity. * Richard Sakwa, University of Kent, UK *In this thought-provoking book, Glenn Diesen offers a controversial though not completely depressing picture of the future interplay between technological progress and global politics. A challenging vision of how our world is going to change and what we should do manage the changes. * Andrey Kortunov, Director General of the Russian International Affairs Council *Glenn Diesen has accomplished a scholarly work in the classic mode of 'big picture' /'big ideas'. In a return, and I might say a rare success among attempts to return to the base/superstructure explanatory model, Diesen takes on and brings together two large phenomena, namely the revolution in technology and the change in global power relations. In this implicit adaptation of the argument of the revolution in the techniques and therefore the forces of production pressing against the relations of production, Diesen traces the linkage between the scientific-technological ('base') and the global political ('superstructure'). It is a superb work of Political Economy. * Dayan Jayatilleka, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation *This is an extremely timely and. necessary book. As everyone was caught by surprise by the speed of non-reciprocity (TCP-IP, WWW, Internet of Things in large ecosystems) a new plane of value, away from territory, actualized in under fifty years. The opening phase of the Fourth Industrial Revolution has only just begun, and the main pillars of the world order are already crumbling, as Professor Diesen states. He asks the right questions: Will the great powers need to achieve “technological sovereignty” in the form of self-sufficient technological ecosystems? Will new technologies empower primarily the individual, corporation or state? To what extent will the Fourth Industrial Revolution influence the geoeconomic rivalry between the great powers? Professor Diesen states it is puzzling why international relations devote so little attention to technological innovation when technology is arguably the most important variable in great power politics and geoeconomics. This book is then timely, as the main power zones are waking up; potential regulation of Big Tech in the Unites States, the call for digital sovereignty with Team von der Leyen and the first cracks in the Chinese super well done integration at the lowest level but in a too obsessive compulsive way. If you own the house there is no need to know what all tenants are doing all the time. So all zones are looking for a better balance between centralization and decentralization. Might Russia have a productive and fitting ecosystem to achieve this? * Rob van Kranenburg - Founder of #IoT Council network accelerator *Table of Contents1. Introduction 2.
