Book SynopsisNational Geographic's Railroad Legacy Map of the United States illustrates the many ways railroads have impacted the nation and shaped people's daily lives. From the creation of time zones still used today to the contributions to the country's economic and industrial development, America's railroad legacy is interwoven with the growth of the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries and of the century to come. The map portrays the routes of today's seven Class 1 (major) railroads, Amtrak's passenger routes, as well as those of the more than one hundred Class 1 railroads that ran in 1920 when five percent of the nation's work force-more than 2 million people-were employed by these lines. The map also highlights present-day and 1920 rail hubs along with text and illustrations of key events in America's railroad history such as the opening of New York City's Grand Central Terminal in 1913 and the last Class I line to employ steam locomotives in 1960. Book Synopsis#1 San Francisco Chronicle Best SellerWinner, 2018 California Book Award Gold Medal (Notable Contribution to Publishing)Winner, 2018 NCIBA Book of the Year Award (Regional Interest)Finalist, 2018 Northern California Book Awards"A gorgeously illustrated compendium."—SunsetThis lavishly illustrated atlas takes readers off the beaten path and outside normal conceptions of California, revealing its myriad ecologies, topographies, and histories in exquisite maps and trail paintings. Based on decades of exploring the backcountry of the Golden State, artist-adventurer Obi Kaufmann blends science and art to illuminate the multifaceted array of living, connected systems like no book has done before. Kaufmann depicts layer after layer of the natural world, delighting in the grand scale and details alike. The effect is staggeringly beautiful: presented alongside California divvied into its fifty-eight counties, for example, we consider California made up of dancing tectonic plates, of watersheds, of wildflower gardens. Maps are enhanced by spirited illustrations of wildlife, keys that explain natural phenomena, and a clear-sighted but reverential text. Full of character and color, a bit larger than life, The California Field Atlas is the ultimate road trip companion and love letter to a place.Trade Review#1 San Francisco Chronicle Best SellerWinner, 2018 California Book Award Gold Medal (Notable Contribution to Publishing)Winner, 2018 NCIBA Book of the Year Award (Regional Interest)Finalist, 2018 Northern California Book Awards"Every California household should have a copy of the 608-page atlas. … Start with Kaufmann’s introduction, because it encapsulates the author’s relationship with the landscape he so dearly loves. From there, read it frontward, backward or according to whatever topic piques an interest." —San Jose Mercury News"A gorgeously illustrated compendium." —Sunset"If you're looking for freeways or pathways, expressways or BART lines, this book can't help you. If, on the other hand, you're looking to get lost in the flora, fauna, and natural habitats that exist across California beyond the I-5, this is a wonderful little guide." —AFAR"A modern-day masterpiece." —Santa Barbara Independent"Transcend[s] the genre of nature writing." —Monterey County Weekly"A revelation. • Global Atlas of Marine Fisheries: A Critical

Island Press Global Atlas of Marine Fisheries: A Critical

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisUntil now, there has been only one source of data on global fishery catches: information reported to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations by member countries. An extensive, ten-year study conducted by The Sea Around Us Project of the University of British Columbia shows that this catch data is fundamentally misleading. Many countries underreport the amount of fish caught (some by as much as 500%), while others such as China significantly overreport their catches. The Global Atlas of Marine Fisheries is the first and only book to provide accurate, country-by-country fishery data. This groundbreaking information has been gathered from independent sources by the world's foremost fisheries experts, and edited by Daniel Pauly and Dirk Zeller of the Sea Around Us Project. The Atlas includes one-page reports on 272 nations or regions, plus fourteen topical global chapters. National reports describe the state of the country's fishery, by sector; the policies, politics, and social factors affecting it; and potential solutions. The global chapters address cross-cutting issues, from the economics of fisheries to the impacts of mariculture. Extensive maps and graphics offer attractive and accessible visual representations. While it has long been clear that the world's oceans are in trouble, the lack of reliable data on fishery catches has obscured the scale, and nuances, of the crisis. The atlas shows that, globally, catches have declined rapidly since the 19805, signalling an even more critical situation than previously understood. The Global Atlas of Marine Fisheries provides a comprehensive picture of our current predicament and steps that can be taken to ease it. For researchers, students, fishery managers, professionals in the fishing industry, and all others concerned with the status of the world's fisheries, the Atlas will be an indispensable resource.

This is a digestible way to consume numbers and data points; there is an art to it. Douglas & McIntyre Publishing Group British Columbia: A New Historical Atlas

Book SynopsisEarly depictions of the West Coast were no more than cartographers’ fanciful guesses. Not until the discovery of “soft gold”—sea otter pelts—and the quest to find a Northwest Passage did explorations, such as the epic voyage of George Vancouver, lead to a better understanding of the region’s geography. Even so, until the gold rush of 1858, the interior of the province was mostly unknown except for the routes blazed by fur traders. Thirteen years later, British Columbia became a province of Canada, and a transcontinental railway was built to connect the land west of the Rocky Mountains with the rest of the country. The efforts of these early explorers, fur traders, gold seekers and builders involved the production of maps that showed what they had found and what they proposed to do. British Columbia: A New Historical Atlas reveals the plans and strategies that created the province we know today through a fascinating visual lens—from maps by early Indigenous inhabitants and the Europeans who arrived to explore and exploit vast resource wealth, to maps drawn by those who, decades later, prepared for war, built dams, promoted real estate and even tracked murders. Presented alongside award-winning historian Derek Hayes’s lively and authoritative text, this unprecedented collection of over 900 maps plus 300 photos and historical documents offers a unique, geographical history. This is the story of both the dreams that came true and those that didn’t—yet all are part of the dramatic tale of the forging of Canada’s western frontier.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores international trends in naming and contributes to the growing field of onomastic enquiry. Naming practices are viewed here through a critical lens, demonstrating a high level of political and social engagement in relation to how we name people and places. The contributors to this publication examine why names are not only symbols of a person or place, but also manifestations of cultural, linguistic and social heritage in their own right. Presenting analyses of geographically and culturally diverse perspectives and case studies, the book investigates how names can represent deeper kinds of identity, act as objects of attachment and dependence, and reflect community mores and social customs while functioning as powerful mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion. The book will be of interest to researchers in onomastics, sociology, human geography, linguistics and history.Trade ReviewThis volume makes a key contribution to the rapidly-expanding field of critical onomastics, presenting new insights into the symbolic value of names in human society. Case studies from different parts of the world highlight the role of names as powerful symbols of identity, particularly in areas of language contact or conflict. The essays are both scholarly and accessible, and deserve to be widely read. * Carole Hough, University of Glasgow, UK *Names and Naming: People, Places, Perceptions and Power is a great addition to the ‘critical turn’ in naming studies. Guy Puzey and Laura Kostanski have brought together an excellent group of scholars to produce a diverse range of empirically rich and critically aware case studies of the politics of naming. This is an important book for anyone who wants to learn about the latest developments in socially engaged and critical approaches to onomastics. * Lawrence D. Berg, University of British Columbia, Canada *I have been working with place names for many years but the articles in this publication have continued my education of the role that names of all varieties play in helping us to find our place. This is not only in a spatial sense, but in cultural and personal aspects I had not previously considered. These papers allowed me to see this and I commend all for the work that has been undertaken in the investigation and preparation of the insights presented. * William Watt, Chair, United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names *This volume covers a variety of pressing themes in naming studies. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field of onomastics and the critical approach advocated by the contributors, the book is also particularly valuable for scholars in pragmatics, human geography, and sociology. -- Johanna Warm, Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria * Language in Society 47 (2018) *This volume forms an extraordinary contribution that clearly illuminates the relevance of critical onomastics. It has the ability to inspire scholars to conduct politically aware and socially engaged onomastic research. The volume deserves to be read by everyone interested in the roles of names and naming. -- Emilia Aldrin, Halmstad University, Sweden * Journal of the English Place-Name Society 48 (2016) *This book describes very well the socio-linguistic diversity in each country, and it is also possible to see some similitude, such as the struggle of minority languages against hegemonies. It is without a doubt a promising field. -- Marc-Alexandre Beaulieu, Leiden University, Netherlands * Onomastica Canadiana, Vol. 95 (2016) *This book is a welcome addition to the expanding field of onomastics.
