Book SynopsisWorking in the outpatient clinic is a key training experience for medical students. When they arrive at the clinic, students may discover that their time on the inpatient wards does not necessarily prepare them to perform well in the outpatient setting. Everything is different in the clinic, from the nature and context of the patient encounter to the student’s role in note-writing, oral case presentation, and case discussion with the attending physician. The purpose of this book is to guide students as they transition to the world of 15-minute appointments, telemedicine, cyberchondriasis, motivational interviewing, shared medical appointments, and real-time informatics. The aim is to give students a clear understanding of their role in a variety of clinic settings, to evaluate and present their patients well, maximize learning, and provide excellent care for their patients. • Diagnoses Without Names: Challenges for Medical

Springer International Publishing AG Diagnoses Without Names: Challenges for Medical

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisDoctors, patients, investigators, administrators, and policymakers who assign diagnoses assume three elements: the name describes an entity with conceptual or evidentiary boundaries, the person setting the name has a high degree of certainty, and the name has a consensus definition. This book challenges this practice and offers an alternative to assigning diagnoses: quantitating diagnostic uncertainty in personal and public medical plans. This book offers the stakeholders' views participating in a workshop, sponsored by the Barbara Volcker Center/Hospital for Special Surgery, taking place in April 2020, about uncertain diagnoses. Chapters examine the circumstances in which diagnosis names are "unassignable", either because patients do not fit within diagnostic "boxes" or because health abnormalities evolve and change over time. In addition, the book deconstructs the processes of diagnosis and explores how different stakeholders used diagnosis names for various purposes. In examining pertinent questions, the book offers a roadmap to achieving consensus definitions or including measures of uncertainty in personal care, research, and policy.Diagnoses Without Names: Challenges for Medical Care, Research, and Policy is an essential resource for physicians and related professionals, residents, fellows, and graduate students in internal medicine, rheumatology, and clinical immunology as well as investigators, administrators, policymakers.Table of ContentsPrefacePART I. • Springer International Publishing AG Lifestyle Medicine: A Manual for Clinical Practice

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisLifestyle – the manner in which people live – is fundamental to health, wellness, and prevention of disease. It follows that attention to lifestyle is critically important to effective and successful health care. But here’s the challenge: health care professionals receive very little, if any, formal training about lifestyle counseling and therefore are ill equipped to incorporate lifestyle issues into clinical practice. In response, “Lifestyle Medicine” is evolving as a means to fill this knowledge gap. Lifestyle medicine approaches health and wellness by harnessing the power of lifestyle-related behaviors and influencing the environment we live in. It is a formal approach that promises to enhance and strengthen a re-invigorated health care system that is still outpaced by the epidemic proportions and complexity of chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, depression, hypertension, and cancer, among others. Lifestyle Medicine: A Manual for Clinical Practice presents this formal approach in a pragmatic context. This unique and practical manual provides clear and succinct guidance on nearly all aspects of lifestyle medicine. The approach is both explanatory and pragmatic, providing case studies and bulleted translation of academic information into clinical practice recommendations. There is an emphasis on scientific evidence wherever possible as well as opinions by the expert chapter authors who practice lifestyle medicine. There is a “how-to” rationality to the book, consistent with a premise that any and all health care professionals should, and perhaps must, incorporate lifestyle medicine. A valuable checklist is included at the close of the book that summarizes key points and provides a practical tool for routine patient encounters.Trade Review“In 32 chapters the authors review the influence of lifestyle on medical conditions, but more important is how changes in lifestyle may improve these diseases. An interesting approach which has led to formation of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. For clinical practitioners.” (Pediatric Endocrinology Reviews (PER), Vol. 14 (2), December, 2016)“Each chapter is a standalone monograph with an introduction, very short vignettes of a case history, followed by the psychological aspects, physical impact, some evidence-based management thoughts, resources, and references. … This book takes a comprehensive approach, covering many of areas that the single-issue monographs on this topic do not. As such this is a valuable overview that has tremendous value to primary care or specialist clinicians, and for supporting medical professionals such as nutritionists, physical therapists, and pharmacists.” (Vincent F. Book SynopsisFollowing the easy-to-use at a Glance format, this brand new title is illustrated throughout with over 60 full-page color illustrations and employs a symptoms-based approach that mirrors the general practice curriculum.Trade Review“A comprehensive guide on history taking, diagnosis and treatment in primary care, useful for written and clinical examinations alike. In particular, the use of high yield schematics throughout - from contraceptive methods and ear and eye symptoms, to the acute abdomen and gynaecological cancer epidemiology - differentiates this text from the rest." (Mobolaji O. Ajekigbe, Imperial College London) “This is a valuable book for young clinicians and students of all disciplines. It is intuitive and provides much teaching material for patients.” (Doody’s) “It will help you develop an understanding of the nature and structure of primary care.” (Student BMA News) “I think it is a fantastic book. I will be recommending it to medical students and other GP registrars. It is a lovely summary of general practice. The authors are obviously very experienced and have managed to distil the real ‘need to know’ facts in a highly reader friendly and engaging way. I would recommend every practice should have a copy of this text. Medical students will find it really useful for exam revision and not just during a GP placement. It’s a really reader-friendly, clear book. It does not scrimp on the medical facts or lose anything by being so slim and lightweight. I think it is priced perfectly for its intended market. The diagrams and illustrations are particularly good and relevant: it’s an excellent revision text for students. It is very difficult to pick out any weaknesses based on its intended audience. I was thoroughly impressed with this book. I though from the style it was going to be a little too basic but it certainly is not. Particularly noteworthy are the illustrations which are highly relevant and clear. The inclusion of photographs makes this text stand out from other similar texts on the market. A far more engaging and informative read than other stodgy textbooks on the same topic. I would have no hesitation in recommending this to medical and GP registrars.” (2013 BMA Medical Book Awards)Table of ContentsContributors 6 Preface 7 Acknowledgements 8 Abbreviations 9 Introduction: how to make the most of your GP attachment 11 Part 1 The essence of general practice 1 The 10-minute consultation: taking a history 12 2 The 10-minute consultation: managing your patient 14 3 Continuity of care and the primary healthcare team 16 4 Why do patients consult? 18 5 Preventive medicine 20 6 Significant event analysis, audit and research 22 7 Communication between primary and secondary care 24 8 Principles of good prescribing in primary care 26 9 Prescribing in children and the elderly 28 10 Law and ethics 30 11 Child abuse, domestic violence and elder abuse 32 Part 2 Common presentations in general practice Child health 12 The febrile child 34 13 Cough and wheeze 36 14 Asthma 37 15 Abdominal problems 38 16 Common behaviour problems 40 17 Childhood rashes 42 18 Child health promotion 44 19 Musculoskeletal problems in children 46 Sexual health 20 Common sexual problems 49 21 Sexually transmitted infections and HIV 52 22 Contraception 54 23 Subfertility 56 Women’s health 24 Termination of pregnancy 58 25 Menstrual disorders 60 26 The menopause 62 27 Common gynaecological cancers 63 28 Breast problems 64 The pregnant woman 29 Antenatal care 66 30 Bleeding and pain in pregnancy 68 31 Other pregnancy problems 70 Care of the elderly 32 Acute confusional state and dementia 72 33 Fits, faints, falls and funny turns 74 Cardiovascular problems 34 Chest pain 76 35 Stroke 78 36 Peripheral vascular disease and leg ulcers 79 37 Preventing cardiovascular disease 80 Respiratory problems 38 Breathing diffi culties 82 39 Cough, smoking and lung cancer 84 40 Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease 86 Endocrine problems 41 Diabetes 88 42 Thyroid disease 90 Gastrointestinal problems 43 Acute diarrhoea and vomiting in adults 92 44 Dyspepsia and upper gastrointestinal symptoms 94 45 Lower gastrointestinal symptoms 96 46 The acute abdomen 98 Musculoskeletal problems 47 Back pain 100 48 Hip and lower limb 102 49 Neck and upper limb 104 50 Inflammatory arthritis, rheumatism and osteoarthritis 106 Eyes and ENT 51 Upper respiratory tract infection (including sore throat) 108 52 Ear symptoms 110 53 The red eye 112 54 Loss of vision and other visual symptoms 114 Dermatology 55 Eczema, psoriasis and skin tumours 116 56 Other common skin problems 118 Mental health 57 Depression 120 58 Anxiety, stress and panic disorder 122 59 Alcohol and drug misuse 124 60 Eating disorders 126 61 Psychosis and severe mental illness 128 Other common conditions 62 Headache 130 63 Tiredness and anaemia 132 64 Insomnia 134 65 Allergy and hay fever 136 66 Urinary tract disorders 138 67 Chronic pain 140 Further reading and resources 142 Index 146

Book SynopsisIn this book, we present medical robotics, its evolution over the last 30 years in terms of architecture, design and control, and the main scientific and clinical contributions to the field. For more than two decades, robots have been part of hospitals and have progressively become a common tool for the clinician. Because this domain has now reached a certain level of maturity it seems important and useful to provide a state of the scientific, technological and clinical achievements and still open issues. This book describes the short history of the domain, its specificity and constraints, and mature clinical application areas. It also presents the major approaches in terms of design and control including man-machine interaction modes. A large state of the art is presented and many examples from the literature are included and thoroughly discussed. It aims to provide both a broad and summary view of this very active domain as well as keys to understanding the evolutions of the domain and to prepare for the future. An insight to clinical evaluation is also proposed, and the book is finished with a chapter on future developments for intra-body robots.Table of ContentsIntroduction xi Chapter 1. Book SynopsisThis book is a comprehensive guide to the assessment and management of adults with thyroid disorders in daily clinical practice. All important aspects and disorders are considered. Relevant information on basic anatomy, embryology, immunology, and physiology is included to provide a better basis for understanding the development of disease and its diagnosis and treatment. Currently available biochemical tests and other specific diagnostic tools are also considered in detail. The various common thyroid disorders are then discussed in a series of individual chapters that focus on etiology, pathophysiology, symptomatology, diagnosis, and treatment. Numerous high-quality illustrations and concise fact boxes are included. The authors are all experts with wide experience in three disciplines and a long-standing interest in thyroid disease.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews:“The authors provide a clinical handbook that covers a wide range of thyroid diseases seen in everyday practice. … This book is targeted at general practitioners, internists, and other clinicians who manage patients with thyroid dysfunction. … The large number of color pictures, graphs, and pathology pictures make this book unique and easy to read. … There are several benefits to this book. … Readers are likely to find useful clinical pearls without much searching. … it serves well as a handbook and reference.” (Rebecca L.
