Book SynopsisGrand Canyon has been saved from dams three times in the last century. Unthinkable as it may seem today, many people promoted damming the Colorado River in the canyon during the early twentieth century as the most feasible solution to the water and power needs of the Pacific Southwest. These efforts reached their climax during the 1960s when the federal government tried to build two massive hydroelectric dams in Grand Canyon. Although not located within the Grand Canyon National Park or Monument, they would have flooded lengthy unprotected reaches of the canyon and along thirteen miles of the park boundary.Saving Grand Canyon tells the remarkable true story of the attempts to build dams in one of America's most spectacular natural wonders. Based on twenty-five years of research, this fascinating ride through history chronicles a century of Colorado River water development demonstrates how the National Environmental Policy Act came out of these controversies, and debunks the myth that the Sierra Club saved Grand Canyon. It also shows how the Sierra Club parlayed public perception as the canyon's savior into the leadership of the modern environmental movement after the National Environmental Policy Act became law.The tale of the Sierra Club stopping the dams has become so entrenched—and so embellished—that many historians, popular writers, and filmmakers have ignored the documented historical record. This epic story puts the events from 1963-68 into the broader the context of Colorado River water development and debunks 50 years of Colorado River water development and Grand Canyon history.Trade ReviewThis book is a very important corrective to the literature on the history of the Grand Canyon and for twentieth-century U.S. environmental history that for so long now has not told the complete story (and truth) on exactly how dams were kept out of the greater Grand Canyon area. Along the way, he [Pearson] tells a compelling story on so many levels of this controversy." - Sterling Evans, Louise Welsh Chair in Southern Plains and Borderlands History at the University of Oklahoma, University of Oklahoma"A fresh, bold new case for who should get the credit for preserving the Grand Canyon." - Bob Wyss, Professor of Journalism, University of ConnecticutTable of Contents Preface: Centennial Reflections Introduction Chapter 1: "Something to be Skinned" Chapter 2: New Lines in the Sand Chapter 3: Dinosaurs and Rainbows Chapter 4: A Time for Water Statesmanship Chapter 5: A "Fjord-like Setting" Chapter 6: "A Little Closer to God" Chapter 7: "Permanent Massive Things" Chapter 8: Be Careful What You Wish For . . . Book SynopsisNAUTILUS BOOK AWARD SILVER MEDALIST — SOCIAL CHANGE & SOCIAL JUSTICEWhen the election is over, the work is just beginning. The future of America depends on what you do after you vote. Today, women in the United States are more educated and politically ambitious than ever before. However, the record numbers of women running for office, casting votes, and marching for change haven't translated into full and equal political participation. Despite significant progress, women are less likely than men to engage in a range of important political activities—from speaking up on the issues they care about to holding their representatives accountable. Equal parts information and inspiration, After You Vote is both a primer and call-to-action for women of all ages who want to exercise their voices and engage more fully in civic life. It's the ultimate guide to political engagement, filled with practical (and proven) tactics to help women make their voices heard and have an influence on the issues they care about most. This book will help you: • Brush up on civics—federal, state, and local • Prioritize your issues • Use the most effective advocacy tactics • Stick with it for the long haul (politics is a marathon, not a sprint!) The question isn't if you can create change on behalf of the issues you care about. You can. The question is: What's at stake if you don't?Trade Review"After You Vote is an invaluable resource for women ready to create change. This smart, accessible guide arms you with the knowledge you need to make our political systems work for you—and the tools you need to fight for the causes you care about. Keep this book close as you take on the world!" —Emily Koh, director of strategic initiatives, TIME'S UP "After You Vote is a tremendous, well-timed, and highly accessible resource with proven and practical tools for women who are looking to use their minutes wisely to make the greatest impact, and it couldn't have come at a more critical time: women's political participation is more important now than ever." —Erin Loos Cutraro, CEO and founder, She Should Run "Courtney Emerson's new book, After You Vote, is a critical call to action empowering all women with the skills and resources to make an impact. Now, more than ever, we need women harnessing their full collective power to build a more inclusive and diverse political landscape." —Kathy Hochul, 77th Lt. Governor of New York and former Member of Congress "I know so many women who want to be more politically active but who hesitate, feeling lost or disillusioned with the current state of things. But, as After You Vote makes clear, the reality is that it's never been more important to get involved and fight for the causes you support. Let this brilliant book help you get started!" —Giovanna Gray Lockhart, founder, NYWCTable of ContentsContents Introduction: We All Have IssuesPart I: Let’s Get Civic-alChapter 1: Gender Gaps in American PoliticsChapter 2: Federal GovernmentChapter 3: State GovernmentChapter 4: Local GovernmentPart I WorkbookPart II: Tools for InfluenceChapter 5: Your Issues, Your VoiceChapter 6: Voting Chapter 7: Lobbying and AdvocacyChapter 8: Campaigning Chapter 9: Sustainable EngagementPart II Workbook Part III: Strengthening Our DemocracyChapter 10: Campaign Financing Chapter 11: Representative RepresentationChapter 12: Voter Access and ParticipationPart III WorkbookConclusion: A Call to Action Resources for ImpactEndnotesAcknowledgementsAbout the AuthorIndex

Book SynopsisThis book rethinks the Armenian people as significant actors in the context of Mediterranean and global history. Spanning a millennium of cross-cultural interaction and exchange across the Mediterranean world, essays move between connected histories, frontier studies, comparative literature, and discussions of trauma, memory, diaspora, and visual culture. Contributors dismantle narrow, national ways of understanding Armenian literature; propose new frameworks for mapping the post-Ottoman Mediterranean world; and navigate the challenges of writing national history in a globalized age. A century after the Armenian genocide, this book reimagines the borders of the “Armenian,” pointing to a fresh vision for the field of Armenian studies that is omnivorously comparative, deeply interconnected, and rich with possibility.Table of Contents1. Book Synopsis“This is a tour de force of sophisticated global erudition.” —Filippo de Vivo, University of Oxford, UK“In its wide global range and rich variety of studies, this expertly edited volume provides an unprecedented view into the scribal practices of diverse cultural traditions in the early modern period.” —Johanna Drucker, University of California, Los Angeles, USA“This volume finally gives the colophon the place it deserves. We see scribes and printers at work in Thailand, the Deccan, Delhi, Damascus, Antwerp, and Timbuktu.” —Konrad Hirschler, University of Hamburg, Germany“In this cross-disciplinary endeavor, ten authors tell lively and exciting stories of historical scribal practices.” —Verena Klemm, University of Leipzig, Germany This book is the first to chart the global diversity of colophons between 1400 and 1800. The volume presents a new approach to scribal cultures that expands traditional definitions. Moving from the paradigm of codicological information towards a thorough interpretation of the wider social worlds of colophons in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America, this volume uncovers the fascinating cultural history of early modern scribes. Chapters examine how those engaging in the composition and distribution of colophons shaped scribal identities, group cultures and bookish communities in a world in which manuscripts mattered. Authors build on approaches from anthropology, cultural studies, codicology, history, and philology to offer a new conceptual framework that studies colophons as scribal practices embedded in their changing social and cultural worlds. As a new contribution to the history of the book, this volume’s global approach pushes the boundaries of what constitutes a colophon.Trade Review“This volume is a welcome addition for the growing community of scholars interested in textual materialities and comparative book history. … this review shall point out some critical perspectives from which readers can engage with this innovative and thought-provoking collection.” (Hwisang Cho, Journal of Early Modern History, Vol. 27 (4), 2023)“Scribal practice is a welcome reminder that every part of a written text is potentially significant, and that even little-known texts can open unexpected windows on the past and present.” (Deborah Rudolph, EAPS, East Asian Publishing and Society, Vol. 13, 2023)Table of Contents1. • Springer Nature Switzerland AG A Transnational History of the Modern Caribbean:

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines Caribbean people resisting racial, political, and social oppression from the eve of the 1790s Haitian Revolution to the twenty-first century. Migrating rebels, shipments of newspapers, rumors, and acts of resistance themselves inspired people throughout the Caribbean who launched their own acts of defiance, illustrating the transnational nature of Caribbean resistance. Some people fought to be left alone, ungovernable, and masterless. Other people fought to free their ethnicity or race, their class, or their nation. Men and women employed a range of tactics from violent armed uprisings to fleeing repression and starting their own communities. Through song, language, religion and festivals, they maintained cultures and identities against oppressive norms that devalued or sought to destroy those cultures and identities. People declared strikes and riots against economic oppression. Women and mothers mobilized for their and their children’s freedoms. Across the Caribbean, people confronted oppression and in so doing illustrated their humanity and agency.Table of Contents1 A Popular History of Resistance across Borders. Book SynopsisThe relationship between politics and law in the early People’sRepublic of China was highly contentious. Periods of intentionallyexcessive campaign justice intersected with attempts to carve outprofessional standards of adjudication and to offer retroactive justicefor those deemed to have been unjustly persecuted. How were victims andperpetrators defined and dealt with during different stages of theMaoist era and beyond? How was law practiced, understood, and contestedin local contexts? This volume adopts a case study approach to shedlight on these complex questions. By way of a close reading of originalcase files from the grassroots level, the contributors detailprocedures and question long-held assumptions, not least about theCultural Revolution as a period of “lawlessness.”Table of Contents Introduction (Daniel Leese, Puck Engman) Beyond "Destruction" and "Lawlessness": The Legal System during the Cultural Revolution (Xu Lizhi) The Intelligence Sleeper Who Never Was: Han Fuying and Case 5004 (Michael Schoenhals) Vetting the People’s Servant: On the Principles of Revolutionary Integrity (Puck Engman) A Policeman, His Gun, and an Alleged Rape: Competing Appeals for Justice in Tianjin, 1966–1979 (Jeremy Brown) A Different Category of Life: The Counterrevolutionary Case of a Rural Schoolteacher (Wang Haiguang) From Denial to Apology: Narrative Strategies of a "Perpetrator" after the Cultural Revolution (Zhang Man) The Floating Fate of a Rebel Leader in Guangxi, 1966-1984 (Song Guoqing)

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book is a systematic study of the China-Britain relationship during the 1942–1949 period with a particular focus on the two countries’ discussions over both the 1943 Sino-British treaty and the discarded Sino-British commercial treaty, the future of Hong Kong, and the political status of Tibet. These were dominated by two underlying themes: the elimination of the British imperialist position in China and the establishment of an equal and reciprocal bilateral relationship. The negotiations started promisingly in 1942–1943, but, by 1949, had failed to reach a satisfactory settlement. Behind the failure lay a complex set of domestic considerations and external factors, including the powerful infl uence of the United States. Even after seven decades, the failure still has a contemporary impact. Recent Sino-British disputes over the Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement and incessant Indo-Chinese confl icts and skirmishes over their unsettled borders all attest to the enduring legacy of the years 1942–1949 as setting the scene for subsequent Sino-British and Sino-Indian relations. From this perspective, the history has never left us.

Since 1948, the OECD and its forerunner, the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC) worked on almost every subject of interest to national governments ranging from economic growth to education (PISA rankings), statistics, to the environment. With varying success the OEEC/OECD thus played a key role as a warden of the West and of capitalist development. However, it has remained one of the least understood international organizations. Bringing together a number of case studies by scholars from around the world, this first source-based volume on the history of the OEEC/OECD in global governance offers not only a new understanding of the Organization’s key areas of activities, but also its multiple relations to member states, other international organizations, and private networks. The volume thus critically re-examines postwar international history, most importantly decolonization and the Cold War, through the prism of one international organization in its various contexts.Trade Review“This ground-breaking collection is part of a larger research project now based at the University of Zurich … . Although there is quite a substantial literature on the OECD, its rich archival resources are largely unstudied, and it is still relatively neglected among international organizations concerned with the global political economy. This volume continues the considerable task of remedying the first of these issues, and makes a strong contribution to the second across a wide range of issues.” (whatsworthreading.weebly.com, April, 2018)Table of ContentsIntroduction: Writing histories of the OECD; Matthieu Leimgruber & Matthias Schmelzer.- From the Marshall Plan to global governance: Historical transformations of the OEEC/OECD, 1948 to present; Matthias Schmelzer & Matthieu Leimgruber.- A short guide to historical archives, online resources, and research materials on the OEEC/OECD.- Part I: Being part of the West.- Western European vs. all-European cooperation? • The Politics of Commercial Treaties in the Eighteenth Century: Balance of Power, Balance of Trade

Springer International Publishing AG The Politics of Commercial Treaties in the Eighteenth Century: Balance of Power, Balance of Trade

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is the first study that analyses bilateral commercial treaties as instruments of peace and trade comparatively and over time. The work focuses on commercial treaties as an index of the challenges of eighteenth-century European politics, shaping a new understanding of these challenges and of how they were confronted at the time in theory and diplomatic practice. From the middle of the seventeenth century to the time of the Napoleonic wars bilateral commercial treaties were concluded not only at the end of large-scale wars accompanying peace settlements, but also independently with the aim to prevent or contain war through controlling the balance of trade between states. Commercial treaties were also understood by major political writers across Europe as practical manifestations of the wider intellectual problem of devising a system of interstate trade in which the principles of reciprocity and equality were combined to produce sustainable peaceful economic development. Trade Review“The volume at hand should be celebrated for highlighting their importance for early modern history in general and for political economy more specifically. … this excellent edited volume offers a welcome reminder not only of the high stakes of our current predicaments but also of how long they have been so and why peaceful international order remains so elusive in a world where wealth and power are positional goods.” (Sophus A. Book SynopsisThis book is the first comprehensive study of the setting up and early development of the NATO Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS), or the alliance’s environmental programme. This expansion of allied cooperation is an interesting indicator of transatlantic relations during an era of transition and under the impact of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger’s diplomacy. The book discusses intra-NATO politics, the projects of the early years and the participation in CCMS projects of non-NATO countries – an unusual feature in the activity of a military alliance. Environmental cooperation in NATO was part of the changes which scientific cooperation was effecting in the international system during the entry into the post-industrial era. The making of the CCMS is the story of a crisis of adjustment to the new era, of hiccups in transatlantic relationships, but ultimately also a story of transatlantic unity. The book will be of much interest to students of NATO, the Cold War, international and environmental history, history of science and international relations.Trade Review“The NATO Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society sheds new light on the anxieties facing the Western allies. … This overview of the CCMS’s early studies offers a reminder that NATO’s operations have long been far more complex and diverse than the phrase ‘political and military alliance’ suggests.” (Susan Colbourn, H-Net Reviews, h-net.org, April 16, 2019)Table of Contents1 Introduction.- 2 The Making of the CCMS, 1969.- 3 The CCMS in NATO Politics: from Doubt to Acceptance, 1970-75.- 4 Dress Rehearsal: the CCMS and Narcotics, 1970-72.- 5 CCMS: the Projects, 1970-75.- 6 The British Deviation, 1969-72.- 7 Beyond NATO: the CCMS and International Politics.- 8 Conclusions.

Book SynopsisThis edition is the first of its kind to offer a basic collection of facsimile, English language, historical articles on all aspects of the extermination of the European Jews. A total of 300 articles from 84 journals and collections allows the reader to gain an overview of this field. The edition both provides access to the immense, rich array of scholarly articles published after 1960 on the history of the Holocaust and encourages critical assessment of conflicting interpretations of these horrifying events. The series traces Nazi persecution of Jews before the implementation of the "Final Solution", demonstrates how the Germans coordinated anti-Jewish activities in conquered territories, and sheds light on the victims in concentration camps, ending with the liberation of the concentration camp victims and articles on the trials of war criminals. The publications covered originate from the years 1950 to 1987. Included are authors such as Jakob Katz, Saul Friedländer, Eberhard Jäckel, Bruno Bettelheim and Herbert A. Strauss.
