Nova Science Publishers Inc Betty Ford: A Symbol of Strength
Book SynopsisBetty Ford is remembered as one of the most outspoken and influential first ladies of all time. Although she entered into the White House during turbulent times, Mrs. Ford captivated a nation and provided them with someone they could trust. Fortunately for the country, Mrs. Ford did not shy away from the challenge. Her positive attitude, candour, and honesty were refreshing remedies for an ailing nation and set the standard for the modern first lady. She championed many issues including alcohol and drug abuse, women''s rights, breast cancer awareness and other social concerns. This new biography sheds light on this charismatic first lady.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Lou Henry Hoover: A Prototype for First Ladies
Book SynopsisRecent interest in the wives of American Presidents has led to the rediscovery of many First Ladies whose public service and accomplishments had been forgotten. The prime example is Lou Henry Hoover, a vivacious woman with a thoroughly modern approach to life, an unquenchable zest for living, and a long-term dedication to public service that dated from the Spanish-American War. Lou Henry Hoover: A Prototype for First Ladies provides readers with their first in-depth examination of the adventure-filled life and numerous public services of this complex and fascinating First Lady. Readers will wonder how Lou Hoover could have become a forgotten First Lady when they discover references to her zest for living and extensive public service activities in contemporary newspaper accounts and letters. The reason for the obscure knowledge about this First Lady is there was no access to her papers, and historians also had tended to dismiss Mrs. Hoover as an aloof and uncaring First Lady who lacked purpose, mission, or audience. The fog began to lift when her personal and public papers became available to historians in 1985.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Lucy Webb Hayes: A First Lady by Example
Book SynopsisRutherford B. Hayes and Lucy Webb Hayes lived their lives as though they knew Rutherford would become President of the United States one day. They not only led exemplary lives from beginning to end, but saved an incredible amount of information for the future historian. Lucy saved almost all of her letters since girlhood. Rutherford did likewise, plus kept a regular diary from his youth to his death. It is the opinion of this author that it is more interesting to hear the story of Lucy Hayes through the words of Lucy and those who knew her, when their statements are clear and succinct, than to have the events filtered through a historian''s paraphrase and summary. Accordingly, there is a fair amount of quotation from Lucy herself, from Rutherford, and from others, in the course of this book. It is hoped that these quotations have been woven into the biography in such a manner as to give the reader a closer view of its subject than can be had by pure narrative. It is necessary to write about Rutherford to know what Lucy was doing. This is true for two reasons. First, he left an excellent diary which records many events for which no writing from Lucy or others is available. Second, even without the diary, it is impossible to understand the life of a First Lady without also knowing something of the life and career of the man who took her to the White House. Still, this biography is about Lucy Hayes, not Rutherford.

Book SynopsisThis edition features a shrewd, annotated abridgment of Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) accompanied by an array of texts that help situate the Vindication in its political, historical, and intellectual contexts. Included are key selections from Wollstonecraft's other writings; from closely related works by Burke, Paine, Godwin, Rousseau, Macaulay, Talleyrand, and Brockden Brown; and from the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen and de Gouges' Declaration of the Rights of Woman and Female Citizen (1791).Trade ReviewA thoughtful and useful abridgement of an essential historical, political, and philosophical text. [Barnard and Shapiro] have managed to preserve the tone and arguments of the original while shedding much of the redundancy and lengthy quotations of external sources that can be off-putting and cumbersome for today's readers. The explanatory footnotes added to the text are helpful without being overbearing. --Katrin Schultheiss, George Washington UniversityA very judicious selection from the Vindication, and the related texts do a great job of setting Wollstonecraft's arguments within contemporary debates about women's education and, more broadly, eighteenth-century political philosophy. The editorial apparatus is also thorough and useful--especially the notes, which are outstanding. Nova Science Publishers Inc Challenges Women Face in Retirement Security
Book SynopsisThis book focuses on women and retirement. Women aged 65 and over will account for a growing segment of the U.S. population over the next several decades. Despite increases in women''s workforce behaviour in the past 65 years, elderly women have persistently high rates of poverty. Thus, it is important to understand the differences between men''s and women''s retirement income, and how women may fare given future reforms to Social Security and pensions. Preparing for retirement and achieving financial security are daunting tasks for all Americans to be sure; however, women face many unique challenges. Women still perform the primary caretaker role in our society. As a result, many women spend significant periods of time out of the workforce raising children or taking care of elderly parents, significantly diluting their earning power. Women are also more likely to work part-time or work in industries where employers are less likely to offer retirement benefits. And women generally earn less than men. In 2004, women earned 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. All of these factors have a significant impact on what women receive from Social Security and pension, as well as what they are able to accumulate through personal savings. This income gap is further exacerbated by the fact that women generally live longer than men, and therefore, need to stretch their income over a longer period of time. This book consists of public domain documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Women's Retirement Security: Challenges & Trends
Book SynopsisElderly women, who comprise a growing portion of the U.S. population, have historically been at greater risk of living in poverty than elderly men. Several factors contribute to the higher rate of poverty among elderly women including their tendency to have lower lifetime earnings, their taking time out of the workforce to care for family members, and outliving their spouses. Other factors affecting older women''s financial insecurity include the economic downturn and changing trends in pension plan offerings. This book examines how women''s access to and participation in employer-sponsored retirement plans compare to men''s and how they have changed over time; how women''s retirement income compares to men''s and how the composition of their income the proportion of income coming from different sources - has changed with the economic conditions and trends in pension design; and what policy options are available to help increase women''s retirement income security.

Book Synopsis"This outstanding collection makes available for the first time a remarkable range of primary sources that will enrich courses on women as well as Latin American history more broadly. Within these pages are captivating stories of enslaved African and indigenous women who protest abuse; of women who defend themselves from charges of witchcraft, cross-dressing, and infanticide; of women who travel throughout the empire or are left behind by the men in their lives; and of women’s strategies for making a living in a world of cross-cultural exchanges. Jaffary and Mangan's excellent Introduction and annotations provide context and guide readers to think critically about crucial issues related to the intersections of gender with conquest, religion, work, family, and the law." —Sarah Chambers, University of MinnesotaTrade Review"Mangan and Jaffary's volume offers an impressive collection of primary sources for Latin American women’s history. It includes texts covering a diversity of women, times, and places across this broad region; shows that women were agents of survival and change for themselves and others; and humanizes the experience of colonial life for specific individuals and families across a long period. This book will be very usable in courses on Latin American, gender, social, and cultural history. I highly recommend it." —Susan Kellogg, University of Houston"When I teach colonial Latin America again, I will be glad to use this book. The strengths include the primary documents written by women, including some indigenous and African women, during a time when their recorded personal testimonies are scarce. I also note the insightful analysis and suggested readings that the editors include, all of which are welcome additions to this book." —René Harder Horst, Appalachian State University

Nova Science Publishers Inc Family-Based & Violence Against Women Provisions
Book SynopsisFamily reunification is a key principle underlying U.S. immigration policy. It is embodied in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), which specifies numerical limits for five family-based admission categories, as well as a per-country limit on total family-based admissions. This book provides an examination of family-based immigration policy. In doing so, it outlines a brief history of U.S. family-based immigration policies, discusses current law governing admissions, and summarises recommendations made by previous congressionally mandated committees charged with evaluating immigration policy. The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) also includes provisions to assist foreign nationals who have been victims of domestic abuse. These provisions, initially enacted by Congress with the Immigration Act of 1990 and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994, afford benefits to abused foreign nationals and allow them to self-petition for lawful permanent resident (LPR) status independently of the U.S. citizen or LPR relatives who originally sponsored them. This book provides further detail on both family-based and violence against women provisions of the United States immigration policy.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Working Women in the U.S.: Statistical Data & a
Book SynopsisWomen''s participation in labor force activities has greatly expanded since the end of World War II. Immediately following the war, less than one-third of women were in the labour force. However, women soon began to participate in greater numbers, and their labor force participation rose rapidly from the 1960s through the 1980s before slowing in the 1990s. By 1999, women reached the peak of their labor force participation, 60 percent. Since then, however, labor force participation among women has declined. Nonetheless, women''s labor force participation remains relatively high by historical standards, particularly among women with children, and a large share of women work full time and year round. This book presents historical and recent labor force and earnings data for women and men from the Current Population Survey (CPS). It examines statistical data and a view of female self-employment of working women in the United States.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Victorian Gender Ideology & Literature
Book SynopsisThe origins of discrimination against women date back to ancient times. Throughout history, women have been exploited sexually, physically, economically, and socially under the shadow of patriarchal doctrines. Religion, tradition and the codes of morality have been misused to ensure the slavery of women. Although today the social and economic status of women is better than it was in the past, they are still the primary victims of abuse, humiliation, violence, and oppression. The Victorian era is one of the most debated periods in history of womanly struggle against discrimination. While it was considered an age of progress and prosperity, it was a time of misery and poverty as well. Victorian England was one of the hottest spots of the Woman Question. At the time, women were forced to lead a passive existence dictated by the norms of Victorian gender ideology. Transformations in science and technology during this period were contradictory to social beliefs and values. Despite the astonishing progress experienced during this period, the rigidly defined roles of men and women in Victorian society remained almost the same until the beginning of twentieth century. Victorian literature on gender flourished in such a tense atmosphere. Female rebellion against the injustices of this developing world often found its voices among the ones who were able to feel the deep sorrow experienced either by themselves or by the members of their gender. This book explores Victorian gender issues and the role of Victorian literature on the womanly journey towards emancipation through their evolutionary path. The key concepts and movements that shaped the historical, social, and political background of women''s cry for their rights are examined along with the accompanying gender literature mainly through a feminist reading of female writers as regards to the Woman Question.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Women & Girls of Color: Addressing Challenges &
Book SynopsisIn recent years, on indicators ranging from educational attainment to economic security to health and well-being, women and girls of color have made tremendous progress. The number of businesses owned by women of color has skyrocketed, and women of color have ascended to the upper ranks of workplaces across industries. Teen pregnancy rates for girls of color have plummeted, and high school and college graduation rates have risen. Yet, these achievements may obscure the very real challenges and disparities that persist for women and girls of color. Girls of color still lag behind in their performance on standardized tests, and they are more likely to be suspended from school. Women and girls of color still face higher rates of poverty and receive lower wages for their work than their white peers, and they are more likely to become involved in the criminal justice system. Women of color still have some of the highest rates of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and other serious conditions, and they experience high rates of domestic violence. And when women are the primary or sole breadwinners for nearly half of all households of color, these disparities do not just affect them, but their families and communities as well. This book addresses challenges and discusses expanding opportunity for women and girls of colour.

Book SynopsisWomen make up over half the U.S. population, but historically have been underrepresented in clinical research supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and others. As a result, differences in the manifestation of certain diseases and reactions to treatment in women compared with men were not identified. For example, there have been instances of women having adverse effects that differed from those of men related to medications and other treatments. NIHs Inclusion Policy established requirements governing womens inclusion in its clinical research. This book examines womens enrollment and NIHs efforts to monitor this enrollment in NIH-funded clinical research; and NIHs efforts to ensure that NIH-funded clinical trials are designed and conducted to analyze potential sex differences, when applicable.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Council Women & Corporate Performance in the
Book SynopsisThis book is about the inclusion of women in the council of companies. Specifically, it presents an investigation of whether there is a relationship between the share of economic and financial performance of women measured by the return on assets (ROA) and the Tobin Q ratio. Theoretical analysis (institutional theory) suggests that gender may have both a positive and negative (or neutral) effect on the economic and financial performance of the company. Statistical analysis supports the theoretical position of no effect, positive nor negative. The results are consistent with the explanation that institutions represent values, rules, and norms which evolve over time, and therefore the presence of women on the board can change under different circumstances and at different times. Based on the authors'' research, it could not be stated strongly that the presence of women contributes to the economic and financial performance of a company. However, no negative evidence was found either. The result of the study suggests that decisions regarding the appointment of women as board of directors should be based on other perspectives rather than solely basing it on economic and financial performance.

Split into six chapters, the works trace the young people’s experiences through triumphs and tragedies. “We Always Seem To Return” brings meditations on memory and inheritance, highlighting how Jewish joy and sorrow often walk hand in hand. “When We Were Small” tells stories of childhood and growing up, interrogating such themes as gender identity, substance abuse, and antisemitism. “A Healthy Collection of Blessings and Hardships” tells of the body and the mind, exploring the sacred nature of the self while making space for struggles in mental health. “Traditions, Interpretations, and Imperfections” dives into spirituality and tradition, celebrating the rich variety of the Jewish community. “Where Is the Peace?” confronts ignorance, including experiences of racist, homophobic, antisemitic, and sexist violence. Finally, in “Carving Our Own Footsteps,” the artists of a new generation set out to continue the battle for justice and freedom. The offerings in this book are emphatically and unapologetically Jewish, but the stories they tell will resonate broadly. Contributors include Jews who are Black and Asian, Sephardic and Ashkenazi, and who reflect diversity in gender identity, sexuality, and ability. The young artists and writers featured here bring an appetite for life as well as the teeth necessary to enjoy the meal. Raw, vibrant, and full of love." All will galvanize you." --Leora Tanenbaum, author of I Am Not a Slut: Slut Shaming in the Age of the Internet."This powerful work . . . is a celebration of what it truly means to be eishet chayil, a woman of valor: for to speak in one's authentic voice is valor in action." --Marra B. Gad, writer, producer, and award-winning author of The Color of Love: A Story of a Mixed-Race Jewish Girl"Deep and powerful, sometimes disruptive and disturbing, but most often hopeful and life-affirming . . . Don't miss this." --Ruth W. Messinger, social justice consultant"In this collection of personal essays, poetry, and visual artwork, Jewish young adults from the online publication jGirls Magazine confront difficult truths in a changing world. Many of the pieces are unfiltered, seeking to connect with other teens rather than defending their points of view to adults. The result is a moving work that encourages solidarity. Nonbinary and LGBTQ+ teens speak out, as do biracial Jews, disabled Jews, and other marginalized Jews who refuse to accept the limitations of traditional Judaism and aim to create viable new Jewish communities. Searching for meaning, the works reflect on race, gender, family, religious practice, and culture. In the section “A Healthy Collection of Hardships and Blessings,” Abigael Good writes of trying to find “The Right Words” to articulate how anxiety has been a constant presence in her life. Emanuelle Sippy’s poem, “The Menu is Overwhelming,” uses metaphor to describe the universally difficult yet necessary process of making decisions. Bold truth-telling characterizes many selections in “Traditions, Interpretations, and Imperfections,” where writers come to terms with rigid barriers that have limited their Jewish identities. Emma Rosman’s strong convictions answer the question, “Asian Jew or Jewish Asian?” and Lauren Alexander’s “My Version of Practicing Judaism” discusses the inaccessibility of some Jewish rituals, which abled Jews may take for granted. Each of the creative responses to contemporary Jewish life is unique. Elena Eisenstadt’s clever variation on bar/bat mitzvah culture, “My Jewish-Themed Bat Mitzvah,” inverts a societal norm by offering a seemingly obvious alternative. In Ofek Preis’s interpretation of Jewish social justice values, “The Power of Jewish Youth,” she addresses Jewish teens’ involvement in the fight against gun violence. Other pieces engage with the mitzvah of praying with tefillin, a practice from which women are generally excluded in the Orthodox world. Alyx Bernstein’s “L’hitateif V’l’hani’ach (To Don and to Wrap)” examines the seeming contradictions of this spiritual experience for a transgender person. The visual artists’ interpretations of Jewish life are richly varied, and each work rewards repeated viewing. Whitney Cohen’s Eva is an insightful portrait of old age; Alexa Druyanoff’s Held depicts a mother and child and draws attention to their similarities; and Dina Ocken’s visionary Kotel of My Dreams imagines a place where barriers of religious difference and gender have been replaced by harmony. Ocken’s painting summarizes the first chapter’s introductory remark: “We are inheritors and authors of memory; it’s the most powerful heirloom entrusted to us.” --Emily Schneider, The Jewish Book Council"Making jGirls voices heardAdults often look back at their youth through rose-colored glasses. But life is not always easy for the teenagers, something that becomes clear in the poems, stories, essays and artwork by Jewish teens that appear in “Salt and Honey: Jewish Teens on Feminism, Creativity, and Tradition” edited by Elizabeth Mandel with jGirls Magazine (Behrman House/jGirls Magazine.) The preface notes that the teens, ages 13-19, are “self-identifying Jewish girls, young women, and nonbinary teens.” The magazine jGirl gave them the space to explore different aspects of their lives, including difficult subjects and joyous ones. The work is titled “Salt and Honey” because the writers “embrace the salt and the honey, the sting and the sweetness” of their lives. It’s difficult to pick out specific works to talk about because they all offer something of interest, but a few that stood out include: “Seeing Beyond” by Leah Bogatie that speaks about the author’s disabled sister, whose example taught her to acknowledge everyone’s humanity. The painful and moving “Dad” by Denae (whose last name was not given), who is unable to make peace with her feelings about her father and forgive him his sins. Audrey Honig’s two wonderful poems, “Almost Thirteen” and “Seventeen,” about antisemitism and the joys of being Jewish. An excellent and beautiful prayer/poem “21st Century Amidah” by Jamie Klinger. Elena Eisenstadt’s “My Jewish-Themed Bat Mitzvah” that captures the true meaning of the ceremony. The moving “My Version of Practicing Judaism,” in which Lauren Alexander writes of how her illness impacts her Jewish practice. Lily Pazner’s poem “You Have Not Walked the Same Streets As Me,” which talks about how women are not safe from harm, even when simply walking down the street. A class visit to the Holocaust Museum that caused Samara Haynes to ponder the reactions of her classmates in “What You See.” Sarah Young’s poem “Kyke Dyke,” where she writes of discovering other Jewish lesbians who helped reaffirm her identity. Although “Salt and Honey” was written by teens for teens, this work will also resonate with adults. Parents of teenagers may want to read this book and discuss it with them in order to better understand how they view the world. The work includes artist statement’s about the drawings and paintings featured, and questions to stimulate discussion. jGirls is to be commended for publishing the thoughts of these Jewish teens. --Rachel Esserman, Executive Editor, The Reporter Group, Jewish Federation of Greater Binghamton.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Time Served: Perspectives on Incarcerated Women
Book SynopsisUsing personal interview accounts, focus group discussions, and semi-structured questionnaires analysed from a sample of female long-term jail inmates, this book focuses on understanding the experiences of mothers in confinement, particularly with regard to coping with separation from children. The chapters examine the extent to which familial background characteristics (ie: living situation while growing up, family history of incarceration, and parental abuse of drugs and alcohol) relate to the female inmate's own circumstances including abuse prior to incarceration, history of drug and/or alcohol abuse and physical illness. Specific race/ethnicity, age, and social class differences regarding these familial background characteristics and the female inmate's own patterns of abuse and victimisation are also explored. Additionally, the book describes the methods of treatment including drug/alcohol therapy, mental health counselling, medical care, group counselling, parenting classes, and reunification counselling, and the differences that exist regarding effective treatment and the female offender's familial background. Emphasis is placed on the mechanisms that the female inmates use to cope with their incarceration, and the specific factors that relate to their use of drugs/alcohol, including previous sexual, emotional, and physical abuse. Investigations also focus on the type of drugs used prior to incarceration, in addition to policy implications for criminal legal processing of female inmates with children, many of whom engage in drug-related crimes to escape adverse, abusive situations during childhood and into adulthood. Finally, select chapters include an expansion of the work on mothers to investigate patterns of behavioural and emotional adjustment outcomes among children and adolescents experiencing maternal incarceration using data drawn from interviews and surveys as well as a national sample.Table of ContentsPreface; Introduction; A History of Womens Imprisonment; The Forgotten Offender Revisited: Evolving Characteristics of Female Prisoners, Drug Use, Abuse and Treatment Issues; Mother and Child: Separation, Reentry and Parenting Issues among Incarcerated Mothers; Preparing for Return to Society: The Hidden Costs of Mothers Confinement; Disrupted Childhood: Assessing the Linkage between Familial Criminality and Adolescent Adjustment Outcomes; Future Directions in the Study of Maternal Incarceration and Child Development; Conclusion; Index.
