Lisa Whittle amplifies the solution to the heart cry of the sick of me life.It is in the heart of every person to want God, but life gets loud, and we forget Him. We get consumed by our problems, our desires, ourselves. We forget our first encounter with the Savior and how much we once wanted Him. But Lisa Whittle believes that if we calibrate our attention, refocusing on God determines the perspective for everything in our life: what we fight for, what we tolerate, how we make decisions, what we choose, what we love, what we chase, what we let go of, and what we are willing to change.  A guidebook, a teacher, and a resource, all in one, I Want God brings rich simplicity to lif

Book SynopsisResearchers and theorists who attempt to generalize about sexuality and sexual orientation in both men and women simultaneously often take male experiences as the norm and ignore unique aspects of women''s lives. The purpose of this issue is to focus attention on scientific research and theory about aspects of women''s sexualities, with special emphasis on sexual orientation. Book Synopsis''She''s experienced wealth, cultural alienation, homelessness, brushes with fame, prison, rehab, record deals, a million blown second chances, a dozen broken hearts and one bloody-knuckled ultimate spiritual redemption. She even died once in the process, and may very well have had sex with your wife back in the eighties...'' Elizabeth GilbertWhen she was seven, Rayya Elias and her upper-class family fled the political conflict in their native Syria, settling in a suburb of Detroit. Bullied in school and caught between the world of her traditional family and her tough American classmates, she rebelled early. Rayya moved to New York City to become a musician and kept herself afloat with an uncommon talent for cutting hair. Eventually though, Elias''s affairs with lovers of both sexes went awry, her (more than) occasional drug use turned to addiction and she found herself living on the streets - between visits to jail. Told with a keen sense of humour and a lack of self-pity in evTrade ReviewIt is my honour to introduce these pages - so gravely, so straggly, so hopeful, bright, and true -- Elizabeth GilbertDo any of us really know ourselves? This kind of exploration into the human spirit is what true religion is about. -- Debbie HarryRayya Elias' twisted, devastating memoir of a life lived on the margins can take its rightful place alongside The Basketball Diaries, Please Kill Me and Just Kids as a classic, blood-stained love letter to bohemian NYC -- Craig MarksElias remains sympathetic as she tramples over her girlfriends, family and herself during the drug-addled chaos of Eighties New York ... This book is to be gulped whole * Stylist *Gritty, but brilliantly funny * Sunday Telegraph *Rayya Elias’s clear-eyed account of her very messy New York life ... A post-punk misery memoir that never asks for your sympathy * Herald *Harley Loco succeeds because it conveys the appeal of a chaotic sex-and-drugs lifestyle ... Elias’s perspective is often transparently self-deluding, but her voice is always appealing, and will doubtless find a warm and responsive audience * Daily Telegraph *Elias’s writing (in her third language) is plain street, unliterary and compelling; her self-descriptions are impressive in their refusal to dodge or euphemise ... Book SynopsisIn July 1888, fourteen hundred women and girls employed by the matchmakers Bryant and May walked out of their East End factory and into the history books. Louise Raw gives us a challenging new interpretation of events proving that the women themselves, not celebrity socialists like Annie Besant, began it. She provides unequivocal evidence to show that the matchwomen greatly influenced the Dock Strike of 1889, which until now was thought to be the key event of new unionism, and repositions them as the mothers of the modern labour movement. Returning to the stories of the women themselves, and byinterviewingtheir relatives today, Raw is able to construct a new history which challenges existing accounts of the strike itself and radically alters the accepted history of the labour movement in Britain.Trade Review"'In a careful reconstruction of events, Raw exposes inaccuracies in the standard accounts... Expertly created by Teela Sanders, Maggie O’Neill and Jane Pitcher this textbook is essential for any student studying sex work! -- Emily ShermanA superb introduction to the sociology of prostitution. The book synthesizes the best research on sex workers, their customers, legal issues, youth involvement, migration, and struggles for rights, and shows that prostitution is much more richly variegated than is commonly thought. -- Ronald WeitzerBenefitting from their vast collective experience as researchers and advocates for sex workers’ rights, the authors of this text have produced an authoritative, balanced and accessible guide to a topic often shrouded in myth. Avoiding simplistic assertions that all sex work is exploitative, or conversely that prostitution is a job like any other, the book draws on an impressive range of primary sources to describe the complexity and contingency of contemporary sex work. An impressive book, and one that should be appreciated by students and researchers alike for its sympathetic and sensitive handling of its subject matter. -- Phil HubbardIn this 2nd edition of Prostitution, Sanders, O’Neill and Pitcher provide an excellent, comprehensive and updated overview of sex work. These top researchers provide us with an insight into contemporary debates on perspectives of sex work, regulation of sex workers and/or third parties, and how sex work is transforming in an increasingly globalized world. They also draw on their expertise to provide sound advice on methodological approaches to prospective sex work researchers on how to conduct rigorous and ethical research in the field of sex work. Book Synopsis The fighting female archetype--a self-reliant woman of great physical prowess--has become increasingly common in action films and on television. However, the progressive female identities of these narratives cannot always resist the persistent and problematic framing of male-female relationships as a battle of the sexes or other source of antagonism. Combining cultural analysis with close readings of key popular American film and television texts since the 1980s, this study argues that certain fighting female themes question regressive conventions in male-female relationships. Those themes reveal potentially progressive ideologies regarding female agency in mass culture that reassure audiences of the desirability of empowered women while also imagining egalitarian intimacies that further empower women. Overall, the fighting female narratives addressed here afford contradictory viewing pleasures that reveal both new expectations for and remaining anxieties about the stronTable of Contents Acknowledgments Introduction 1. Jones and Colonel Ida Craft marched 250 miles at the head of their all-volunteer platoon, advancing from New York City to Washington, DC in the dead of winter, in what was believed to be the longest dedicated women''s rights march in American history. Along the way their band of protestors overcame violence, intimidation, and bigotry, their every step documented by journalist-embeds who followed the self-styled army down far-flung rural roads and into busy urban centers bristling with admiration and enmity. At march''s end in Washington, more than 100,000 spectators cheered and jeered Rosalie''s army in a reception said to rival a president''s inauguration. She ran her own studio in North London, only employed women, and made her mark on history by creating compellingly modern portraits of women in the British suffrage movement. The women that Connell captured on film are as class-inclusive a group as you could find: whether they were factory workers, schoolteachers, or aristocrats, they joined the cause to make a difference for future generations of women, if not for themselves. Connell''s portraits created a new kind of visibility for these activists as hard-working, unrelenting women, whose spirits rose above injustice. Those familiar with Julian's writings should find this unique take to be contemporary and relevant." -- James Wetherbee * Library Journal *"In Laughing at the Devil, Amy Laura Hall urges her own readers to read Julian [of Norwich] and to keep thinking along with her. Book SynopsisIn The Force of Witness Rosa-Linda Fregoso examines the contra feminicide movement in Mexico and other feminist efforts to eradicate gender violence. Drawing on interviews, art, documentaries, and her years of activism, Fregoso traces the micro and macro scales of misogyny and the patterns of state complicity with gender violence. She shows how different forms of witnessing—from activist-mothers’ bearing witness to the memories of their daughters and expert witnesses in court cases to communal witnessing and a scholar-activist-citizen witnessing her own actions—are key to resisting feminicidal violence. Fregoso situates these forms of witness in the histories, contexts, structures, bodies, and intersectional struggles they emerge from. By outlining the complexities of feminicidal violence in relation to witnessing processes, Fregoso challenges the notion of witness as an individual or autonomous subject inscribed solely in the legal or religious arenas. Rather,Trade Review"Fregoso masterfully and poignantly combines theory, scholarship, and activism in this volume, thereby bearing witness and accompanying others in their struggles for justice. Book SynopsisExplores experiences with disability and aging for immigrant survivors of domestic violence across thelife courseAcross the United States, one in three women experiences violence in their intimate relationships. More resources are now being devoted to providing these women with immediate care; but what happens to survivors, especially those from marginalized communities, as they grow older and grapple with the long-term effects? In Violence Never Heals, Allison Bloom presents a life-course perspective on the disabling experience of violence in Latina immigrant communities.Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork performed in a Latina program at an Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) crisis center, Bloom offers insights into the long-term effects of systemic and gender-based violence, revealing that these experiences become subtly disabling long before old age. Drawing from her own background as a practitioner, Bloom further details how current IPV servTrade ReviewBloom writes in an accessible style and clearly knows her field from the inside. She draws on an array of concepts and research discussions—from intersectionality and embodiment to disability theory, to mention a few of her perspectival bases. The various conceptual discussions in the book are grounded in the author’s concrete cases and her ethnographic fieldwork... Expanding on the power of such support groups as cathartic rituals rather than opportunities for learning new strategies in life, Bloom’s book highlights a way to move forward. * Affilia: Feminist Inquiry in Social Work *

Book SynopsisOne of NPR's Best Books of 2017The first in-depth social investigation into the development and rising popularity of Botox The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery estimates there are about two-and-a-half million Botox procedures performed annually, and that number continues to increase. The procedure is used as a preventive measure against aging and a means by which bodies, particularly women's, can be transformed and improved through the appearance of youth. But why is Botox so popular, and why is aging such a terrifying concept? Botox Nation draws from engaging, in-depth interviews with Botox users and providers as well as Dana Berkowitz's own experiences receiving the injections. The interviews reveal the personal motivations for using Botox and help unpack how anti-aging practices are conceived by, and resonate with, everyday people. Berkowitz is particularly interested in how Botox is now being targeted to younger women; since Botox is a procedure that must be continualTrade ReviewThis book is an essential text for anyone interested in sociology and the body. Beautifully written and personally reflexive, it is a wonderful example of the drawing together and application of different strands of social theory -- symbolic interactionism, feminist theories of embodiment and post-structuralism, among them. While taking very seriously the epic sociological dilemma of structure vs. agency, it demonstrates quite explicitly how the self and the corporeal are constructed via an emerging body technology like Botox; in turn, it shows how the meanings of such technologies are made concrete in and through the bodies of contemporary women -- including the author's own body. -- Debra Gimlin, author of Body Work: Beauty and Self-Image in American CultureWhen we think of body modification, we think of surgery -- like liposuction, face lifts, breast augmentation. Dana Berkowitz's exciting work dramatically expands the discussion to include nonsurgical procedures -- which account for 80% of all procedures. Combining deft fieldwork, detailed interviews, and daring autoethnography, Berkowitz broadens and deepens our understanding of the cosmetically altered but not surgically redefined body. -- Michael Kimmel, author of Angry White Men: American Masculinity at the End of an EraThis book is a significant contribution to understanding the ways in which the aging body is commodified in contemporary societies and how promissory discourse may shape views and actions and have inequitable outcomes. It will prove invaluable to those interested in the body and society, the sociology of health and illness, and the dynamics of new and emerging treatment markets. * American Journal of Sociology *The writing is approachable, and the research is well-documented in an appendix, making the volume suitable for methods courses. * Choice *

Book SynopsisA trailblazing look at how the law regulates women's bodies as reproductive sites and what can be done about it. At the center of the war on women lies the fact that women in the contemporary United States are facing more widespread and increased surveillance of their reproductive health and decisions. In recent years states have passed a record number of laws restricting abortion. Physicians continue to sterilize some women against their will, especially those in prison, while other women who choose to forego reproduction cannot find physicians to sterilize them. While these actions seem to undermine women's decision-making authority, experts and state actors often defend them in terms of promoting women's autonomy. In Governed through Choice, Jennifer M. Denbow exposes the way that the notion of autonomy allows for this apparent contradiction and explores how it plays out in recent reproductive law, including newly enacted informed consent to abortion laws like ultrasound mandateTrade Review"Governed through Choice is a sophisticated but accessible analysis of the governance of women as reproductive subjects.Providing fresh readings of classic and contemporary political theory while engaging the contemporary politics of reproductive rights, Denbow argues that the political ideal of autonomy defies and justifies the regulation of womens bodies in a variety of sites. This text is a timely reflection on the continued political centrality of women's bodies." -- Claire Rasmussen, author of The Autonomous Animal: Self-Governance and Modern Subjectivity"This book brilliantly theorizes two faces of autonomy in contemporary liberal democraciesautonomy as a technique of self-management and governance, and autonomy as a frame for critique and transformation of subordinating practices. • Fixing Parental Leave

New York University Press Fixing Parental Leave

Book SynopsisA real-world solution for parental leave that promotes gender equality at work and at homeWhat do Papua New Guinea, Suriname, and the United States have in common? These three nations are the only ones that do not offer some form of parental leave to new parents. The US lags far behind the rest of the world on this important issue, raising questions about our commitment to gender equality and the welfare of our families. In Fixing Parental Leave, Gayle Kaufman takes an in-depth look at parental leave policies in the US, the UK, and Sweden, and evaluates the benefits and drawbacks of leave policies in each country. She finds that there is more to parental leave policies than whether a country provides time off around the birth or adoption of a child. While most policies are designed to help women return to work, this is only half of the puzzle. The second half requires men to be meaningful partners by encouraging them to take equal time at home. Ultimately, Kaufman arrives at a ratiTrade Review"Gayle Kaufman’s incisive analysis of parental leave policies in the U.S., the United Kingdom, and Sweden convincingly demonstrates that there is no need to choose between child well-being and parental equality. By showing us what works—and what doesn’t—Fixing Parental Leave offers a blueprint for addressing the deepening caregiving crisis facing workers and parents worldwide. It deserves the attention of anyone concerned about the fate of American families, workplaces, and political culture at this critical juncture in our history." -- Kathleen Gerson, author of The Unfinished Revolution: Coming of Age in a New Era of Gender, Work, and Family"Kaufman provides a comprehensive and lively portrait of the parental leave landscape in the United States—both public and private—and demonstrates that the picture is bleak. She draws on policy models operating in Sweden and the United Kingdom to craft policy lessons, both inspirational and cautionary. The heart of Kaufman’s book is a blueprint for the policy reforms that are desperately needed in the United States – reforms that would enable parents to better reconcile parenting and employment, while promoting more gender-egalitarian divisions of labor. Ideally, the book will land in the hands of American policy-makers at the national, state, and local levels." -- Janet Gornick, author of Income Inequality: Economic Disparities and the Middle Class in Affluent Countries"Inducing fury as it exposes American workplaces that give lip service to family leave laws, but that do little to support new families, the book shows that having children penalizes working parents, who are shunted into “mommy track” jobs, miss out on promotions, and depend on employers’ goodwill as they adapt. Forwarding a nuanced perspective on the real consequences of leave policies, [Fixing Parental Leave] compares the US to nations including Sweden and the UK, and find that most successful leave policies take fathers into account, too… The book’s suggestions are enlightening, big picture ones that keep in mind the fact that babies need parents who provide love and stability." * Foreword Reviews *"In Fixing Parental Leave, Kaufman argues that the US continues to lead the world in its lack of support for families, made apparent by its approach to parental leave. The author’s carefully constructed case study of parental leave policies in the US, UK, and Sweden reveals not only best policies and practices for ensuring healthy families and maximizing women’s participation in the labor force, but also illuminates the clear relationship between parental leave and gender equality… [A] valuable study." * Choice *

Before Official Multiculturalism assesses women as liberal pluralist advocates and activists, critically examining the key roles they played as community organizers, frontline social workers, and promoters of ethnic festivals. The book explores women’s community-based activism in support of a liberal pluralist vision of multiculturalism through an analysis of the International Institute of Metropolitan Toronto, a postwar agency that sought to integrate newcomers into the mainstream and promote cultural diversity. Drawing on the rich records of the Institute, as well as the massive International Institutes collection in Minnesota, the book situates Toronto within its Canadian and North American contexts and addresses the flawed mandate to integrate immigrants and refTable of ContentsList of Illustrations Part One: Introduction 1. Book SynopsisIn 1826 Angela Veronese, a gardener’s daughter, wrote and published the first modern autobiography by an Italian woman. Veronese’s account focuses on her unique experience as a peasant girl who came of age among the Venetian elite, and details how she attained a certain renown in and out of Italy by improvising, writing, and publishing her own lyrics. Courting Celebrity is a bilingual annotated edition of Veronese’s autobiography. To better elucidate Veronese’s thinking, the book includes the autobiographical writing of another contemporary Italian poet, Teresa Bandettini, a well-known Tuscan poet-improviser. The book offers a substantial sample of Veronese’s poems, translated and in the original. Book SynopsisTells the story of French feminism between 1944 and 1981, when feminism played a central political role in the history of France. The key women during this epoch were often leftists committed to a materialist critique of society and were part of a postwar tradition that produced widespread social change, revamping the workplace and laws governing everything from abortion to marriage.Trade Review"In an entanglement of opinions and assumptions, Greenwald thoroughly iterates the principal arguments and struggles of this time and any scholar researching feminism, or perhaps simply a curious reader, would do well to pick up this book."—Celina Vargas, French Review"Scholars of twentieth-century feminist history on both sides of the Atlantic will want to take note of Lisa Greenwald's comprehensive account of the ideological debates that underpinned feminist-led public policy changes in postwar France."—Sandra Reineke, American Historical Review“‘Femininity and womanhood had long been expressions of women’s power and the root of their identity in French society,’ writes Lisa Greenwald. Her lively, smart, and thoroughly researched book shows how those terms—and the power arrangements and identities they stood for—were revised, reinterpreted, and repudiated. . . . The fiftieth anniversary of May ’68 will direct new attention to its powerful aftershocks. Feminism was one of those aftershocks, and Greenwald’s book will be part of our reappraisal of this historical moment.”In an entanglement of opinions and assumptions, Greenwald thoroughly iterates the principal arguments and struggles of this time and any scholar researching feminism, or perhaps simply a curious reader, would do well to pick up this book. Judith G. Coffin, associate professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin“Lisa Greenwald introduces anglophone audiences to the breadth and depth of second-wave feminism in France. Her bold analysis encompasses much more than theory by restoring to us the complexity of the activist components of the Mouvement de Libération des Femmes.”—Karen Offen, senior scholar, Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University“Finally! In her remarkable book on the history of French feminism after World War II, Lisa Greenwald restores overlooked feminist activists of the 1950s and 1960s to their rightful place. Embedding them in their changing historical context, Greenwald follows feminism through upheaval and fracture after 1968, exploring both the unresolved dilemmas and the profound changes feminists brought about.”—Sarah Fishman, associate dean for undergraduate studies, College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Houston“A solid and well-documented investigation into the Women’s Liberation Movement in France: its actions, its components, its relations with previous generations, and its painful internal conflicts. It reveals the very important role played by radical and materialist feminists. It is an effective antidote against the invention of ‘French feminism’ by some American scholars.”—Sylvie Chaperon, professor of contemporary and gender history at the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès, Laboratory FRAMESPA“This is the book you need in order to grasp the complex history of French Second-Wave Feminism.”—Bibia Pavard, senior lecturer in history, Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Analysis of Media (CARISM) at the University Paris II"In the United States, there remains the belief that French feminism of the second wave is only a literary and/or theoretical movement, leaving in the shadow its political struggles, internal conflicts, and their real impacts. The novelty of this work is to place the women's liberation movement in the historical and intellectual contexts in which it emerged and grew . . . Lisa Greenwald's book will therefore be of interest in more than one way: not only does it offer, for the first time on the other side of the Atlantic, a history of the women's liberation movement in France and highlights—in a comparative perspective with the United States movement by example—the peculiarities that cross it. It also lets us French readers see a new approach to second wave feminism by placing it in a longer time frame—by linking it to the French political and intellectual context and to the first writings and first actions of women (mainly since the end of World War II)."—Archives du Feminisme"Daughters of 1968: Redefining French Feminism and the Women's Liberation Movement, is the story of modern-day French feminism which was both impactful and full of intellectual and personal conflict."—Marshal Zeringue, Page 99 TestTable of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Introduction: Reigniting French Feminism for the Twentieth Century 1. Book SynopsisWomen, Empires, and Body Politics at the United Nations, 1946–1975 tells the story of how women’s bodies were at the center of the international politics of women’s rights in the postwar period.Giusi Russo focuses on the United Nation Commission on the Status of Women and its multiple interactions with the colonial and postcolonial worlds, showing how—depending on the setting and the inquiry—liberal, imperial, and transnational feminisms could coexist. Russo suggests that in the early stages of identifying discriminating agents in women’s lives, UN commissioners overlooked the nation-state and went through a process of fighting discrimination without identifying the discriminator. However, it was the focus on empire that allowed for a clear identification of how gender constructs were instrumental to state politics and the exclusion of women. An emphasis on colonial practices also generated a focus on the body and radically shiftedTrade Review"In recent years, a new wave of histories has documented the broad range and reach of women’s interventions in the international arena in the twentieth century. Giusi Russo’s Women, Empires, and Body Politics provides a welcome addition to this literature, exploring how women from a wide variety of countries engaged with the formal mechanisms created by the United Nations (UN) in the years before International Women’s Year (1975). Russo focuses, in particular, on the records of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), an archive that had largely been untapped to date."—Nicole C. Bourbonnais, Women's History Review"Women, Empires, and Body Politics at the United Nations, 1946-1975 constitutes a very significant contribution to the study of the UN's gender politics, imperial feminism, and Cold War history, which will equally interest historians of women's and gender history and historians working on the global Cold War."—Chiara Bonfiglioli, H-Diplo“Giusi Russo sheds light on the pivotal and until-now-overlooked role the UN Commission on the Status of Women played in defining international women’s rights between 1946 and 1975. During this era of the Cold War, decolonization, and economic development, the CSW developed the blueprint for what was later popularized as ‘women’s rights are human rights.’ . . . Demonstrating the inextricable links between ‘body politics’ and international politics, Russo’s book fills important gaps in global feminist, foreign relations, and human rights histories.”—Katherine M. Marino, author of Feminism for the Americas: The Making of an International Human Rights Movement“An astute analysis. Giusi Russo provides a chronology of the emergence of body politics and the move from public (civic and political equality) to private (marriage and reproduction) discrimination that characterized this lingering period of imperial feminism. Tracing the figure, Alison Fraunhar looks at the representation and performance in both elite and popular culture. She also tracks how characteristics associated with these women have accrued across the Atlantic world.Widely understood to embody the bridge between European subject and African other, the mulata contains the sensuality attributed to Africans in a body more closely resembling the European ideal of beauty. This symbol bears far-reaching implications, with shifting, contradictory cultural meanings in Cuba. Loreen Olson and Jenni M. Simon combat the idea that is so often espoused by medical professionals, researchers, and society at large: to be a good parent, one must provide breast milk to the infant in order for the baby to grow into a healthy, productive citizen.
