University of Illinois Press Womens Political Activism in Palestine

Book SynopsisTrade Review"Women's Political Activism in Palestine is remarkable for its attention to detail that is skillfully pitched to appeal both to readers with interests in women's activism more generally and to those with a deeper regional knowledge specific to Palestine. . . . A thought-provoking text that sits among the finest social scientific works on contemporary Palestine in recent years." --LSE Review of Books"This highly engaging book poses new questions about Palestinian women's activism in Occupied Palestine, in light of the failure of the Oslo process, ongoing and intensifying Israeli colonization, dispossession and violent repression, and the absence of an effective and legitimate Palestinian national leadership." --Journal of Holy Land and Palestine Studies"The author has succeeded in achieving the aim of analysing and generating a better understanding of micro-level politics as represented in Palestinian women's everyday practices." --Women's Studies International Forum"A narrative that is rich with fresh insights and enlightening anecdotes, and affords a cluster of new solutions to old problems." --South Asia Magazine"Sophie Richter-Devroe's research offers a rich description and analysis of women's political activism in Palestine. . . . The focus on women's multiple forms of political engagement in the post Al-Aqsa intifada fills a gap in our knowledge about the contemporary landscape of women's politics in Palestine." --Journal of Women, Politics & Policy"Richter-Devroe's book navigates many complex trajectories and dispels the notion of understanding the Palestinian anti-colonial struggle from a Western liberal viewpoint." --Middle East Monitor"This highly engaging book poses new questions about Palestinian women's activism in Occupied Palestine, in light of the failure of the Oslo process, ongoing and intensifying Israeli colonization, dispossession and violent repression, and the absence of an effective and legitimate Palestinian national leadership." --Journal of Holy Land and Palestine Studies"This brilliant book challenges successfully common theoretical approaches to the ongoing struggle in Palestine. Richter-Devroe takes the analysis of women's resistance in Palestine into new intriguing and fascinating areas of inquiry. This book successfully combines a very thorough theoretical examination with a very humane narration of life in Palestine under the Israeli colonization. A must-read for students, scholars, and anyone looking to shed new light on the evergreen topic of Palestinian resistance."--Ilan Pappé, author of The Forgotten Palestinians: A History of the Palestinians in Israel "Richter Devroe offers a rich and nuanced account of women’s ways of doing politics in contemporary occupied Palestine. It is an essential reading for all those seeking to understand how resistance is entrenched into mundane and ordinary practices in everyday life."--Ruba Salih, author of Gender in Transnationalism: Home, Longing, and Belonging among Moroccan Migrant Women

Book SynopsisHow the Cold War era changed the trajectory of women's gymnastics Electrifying athletes like Olga Korbut and Nadia Comaneci helped make women's artistic gymnastics one of the most popular events in the Olympic Games. But the transition of gymnastics from a women's sport to a girl's sport in the 1970s also laid the foundation for a system of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse of gymnasts around the world. Georgia Cervin offers a unique history of women's gymnastics, examining how the high-stakes diplomatic rivalry of the Cold War created a breeding ground for exploitation. Yet, a surprising spirit of international collaboration arose to decide the social values and image of femininity demonstrated by the sport. Cervin also charts the changes in style, equipment, training, and participants that transformed the sport, as explosive athleticism replaced balletic grace and gymnastics dominance shifted from East to West. Sweeping and revelatory, Degrees of Difficulty tells a story of interTrade Review"Degrees of Difficulty is an important read and makes the case for necessary changes to a sport that millions love to watch but whose institutional history few understand." --Journal of Sport History"Georgia Cervin's Degrees of Difficulty is an enthralling analysis of elite women's gymnastics, from a scholar's and insider's view. Through carefully applied lenses of gender, race, power, and politics, Cervin exposes the historical underbelly of cheating, bribery, abuse, and political manipulation in one of the world's most popular Olympic Sports."--Kevin B. Book SynopsisWinner of the Mormon History Association Best International Book Award The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continues to contend with longstanding tensions surrounding gender and race. Yet women of color in the United States and across the Global South adopt and adapt the faith to their contexts, many sharing the high level of satisfaction expressed by Latter-day Saints in general. Caroline Kline explores the ways Latter-day Saint women of color in Mexico, Botswana, and the United States navigate gender norms, but also how their moral priorities and actions challenge Western feminist assumptions. Kline analyzes these traditional religious women through non-oppressive connectedness, a worldview that blends elements of female empowerment and liberation with a broader focus on fostering positive and productive relationships in different realms. Even as members of a patriarchal institution, the women feel a sense of liberation that empowers them to work against oppression and agTrade Review"Scrupulously researched. . . . Kline's conclusions are vitally important, not only for scholars who must now expand their sense of the variety of responses Mormon women have to Church teachings and policies, but also for missionaries, travelers, investigators, and leaders at all levels in this hierarchical, patriarchal, imperfect, Utah-based church." --Association of Mormon Letters“Reading Caroline Kline's Mormon Women at the Crossroads: Global Narratives and the Power of Connectedness has been an exercise of discovery, delight, and richly provoking insights. . . . I would enthusiastically recommend this book to anyone with a stake in the tradition. " --Juvenile Instructor"Mormon Women at the Crossroads blends personal stories with theological considerations of women’s roles in contemporary Mormonism." --Foreword Reviews"Yes! Mobilizing her powerful skills as a researcher and her lived understanding of Mormonism, Caroline Kline amplifies the voices of women from the global Mormon movement with a level of respect for complexity and nuance we just don’t get from official LDS venues. In so doing, she offers us all a model for Mormon Studies--and, more broadly, religious studies--of how to navigate the vast distances in geography, history, and perspective that one faith tradition can embrace. This is how we understand our fellow Saints: we listen and let them teach us. Thank you, Dr. Kline. This book should be taught in introductory religious studies courses nationwide, and I hope no Mormon Studies class in the country proceeds without this text on the syllabus."--Joanna Brooks, author of Mormonism and White Supremacy: American Christianity and the Problem of Racial Innocence

Book SynopsisWhen an obscure primary election met the culture wars In 1990, a suburban Chicago race for the Republican Party nomination for state representative unexpectedly became a national proxy battle over abortion in the United States. But the hard-fought primary also illustrated the overlooked importance of down-ballot contests in America's culture wars. Patrick Wohl offers the dramatic account of a rollercoaster campaign that, after attracting political celebrities and a media circus, came down to thirty-one votes, a coin toss to determine the winner, and a recount fight that set a precedent for how to count dimpled chads. As the story unfolds, Wohl provides a rare nuts-and-bolts look at an election for state office from its first days through the Illinois Supreme Court decision that decided the winner--and set the stage for a decisive 1992 rematch. A compelling political page-turner, Down Ballot takes readers behind the scenes of a legendary Illinois election.Trade Review"Engaging prose. . . . Will likely be a popular selection as the 2024 election draws near. Book SynopsisTrade Review"With memories and stories at the forefront, the book is a magisterial contribution to the discipline of anthropology." * North American Congress on Latin America *"For those designing undergraduate and graduate courses in Puerto Rican Studies, Latinx Studies, and Ethnic Studies and seeking readings that present innovative methodological and epistemological contributions, Hilda Lloréns’ Making Livable Worlds is highly recommended. The work invites spirited and engaging classroom discussions that promote expanded thinking in written work. Beyond the classroom, Lloréns’s methodology and nuanced treatment of too often simplified contested concepts make all-important contributions to these fields of study. Her serious attention to the daily work and interventions of Black and Afro-Puerto Rican women to make livable worlds in the here and now and for coming generations addresses gaping holes in environmental justice-minded Puerto Rican Studies, Latinx Studies, and Ethnic Studies" * Latinx Project, New York University *"The primary strength of Lloréns’s book rests in the intimacy that she brings to excavating the troubling environmental injustices Black Puerto Rican women have to live under even as they struggle against marginalization...Making Livable Worlds is a timely and necessary examination of the growing crisis in environmental justice and other cultural issues such as gender, race, and the effects of colonialism." * Lateral, Journal of the Cultural Studies Association *"Powerful and beautifully written, Making Livable Worlds opens an ecofeminist archive that invites researchers to extend this kind of study to other islands. It also provides inspiration on how to undertake this task with such methods as autoethnography, which will hopefully become more ingrained in the toolbox of young Caribbeanist scholars. One of the most important attributes of this work is that we hear through Lloréns myriad voices presented not as heroines or victims but as women making the best out of their imposed dispossession." * H-Environment *"Lloréns’ ambitious book skillfully weaves her personal and her family history with the histories of other Black Puerto Rican women in the coastal southeast part of Puerto Rico." * Latino Studies *"Scholars of social reproduction and the solidarity economy will find Lloréns’s case study useful for understanding how alternative economic logics develop and flourish under adversity." * H-Caribbean *"[P]rovides valuable insight on how capitalism, slavery, matriarchal dispossession, ecological crises, and colonization relate to Afro-Puerto Rican women’s lives, and models liberatory responses to these oppressive circumstances, empowering the reader to engage in further action toward similar goals of collective liberation." * Feminist Pedagogy *

Book SynopsisWomen worldwide are making their presence felt as sport fans in rapidly increasing numbers. This book makes a distinctive and innovative contribution to the study of sport fandom by exploring the growing visibility and interest in women who follow sport. It presents the latest data on womenâs sport spectatorship in different regions of the world, posing new theoretical paradigms to study the globalised nature of female sport fandom. This book goes beyond conventional approaches to analysing the practices of women sport fans. By using a critical feminist perspective to investigate cultural conditions and social contexts (including globalisation, digital networked technologies, consumerism, neoliberalism and postfeminism), it brings into view a diversity of womenâs voices and experiences as sport fans. It sheds new light on the power dynamics of gender, ethnicity and sexuality influencing womenâs participation in sport spectatorship and interrogates the ways female sport fandom Trade Review"Toffoletti has presented a timely account of current research on women sport fans. The book goes beyond the common reconstruction of the practices of female supporters but asks important questions of why and how women’s fandom is encouraged. As becomes evident throughout the book, the way sporting institutions address gender diversity in fandom often serves to preserve or reinforce gender hierarchies in sports." - Henk Erik Meier, University of Münster, European Journal for Sport and Society"Women Sport Fans succeeds most notably as a rich survey of existing literature relevant to the study of female sports fans and as a provocation for further research … Toffoletti offers a dynamic roadmap for future sports feminist scholarship and makes a compelling case for the importance of a transnational feminist perspective to the field." – Kathy Cacace, University of Texas at Austin, Feminist Media Studies"The book gives a testimony of how unequal relations between men and women function in different countries and in different sports, which may enable, for example, sports and women’s organisations to strengthen emancipatory practices in this area. In the scientific world, the book should open a discussion of great importance, as women are becoming more and more significant actors in the world of sport, actors who can no longer be underestimated." - Honorata Jakubowska, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland, & Radoslaw Kossakowski, Gdansk University, Poland, International Review for the Sociology of SportTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book SynopsisThis revised and updated second edition traces the growth of feminist criminology from the 1970s to the present, examining the diversity of feminist criminologies that have developed, the ways they have responded to and built on one another, and the future directions for research and activism to which they point us.Feminist criminology grew out of the Womenâs Movement of the 1970s, in response to the male, heteronormative dominance of mainstream criminology â which meant that not only were women largely excluded from carrying out criminological research, but they were also rarely considered as subjects of that research. Other groups were also marginalized by the mainstream, either discussed with stereotypical framing or overlooked completely. Whilst showing how feminist perspectives have made a significant impact on the discipline, the academy, and the criminal legal system, this book also highlights the limits of this influence. In doing so, it explores answers to key questi

  • On the Significance of Religion in Violence

Taylor & Francis Ltd On the Significance of Religion in Violence

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this ground-breaking volume, the authors explore two sides of religion: the ways in which it contributes to violence against women and girls (VAWG) and the ways it counters it. Recognising the very real impact of religion on the lives of women and girls, it prioritises experiences and learnings from empirical research and of practitioners, and their activities at grassroots-level, to better understand the nature and root causes of VAWG. Drawing on research done in Christian and Muslim communities in various fragile settings with high religiosity, this book avoids simplistically assigning blame to any one religion, instead engaging with the commonalities of how religion and religious actors influence norms and behaviours that impact VAWG. If the sustainable development goal of ending all forms of VAWG is to be achieved, how should actors in the international development sector engage with religion and religious actors? This book unpacks the nature of religion and religious actors Trade Review"Innovative, evidence-based and thought-provoking. The authors analyse, critique and chart a way forward for both faith-inspired and secular actors working on some of the most pertinent issues of our times. This book is not only a must-read, but a roadmap for women’s dignity."Azza Karam, Secretary General, Religions for Peace"Through an analytical exploration based on stories of agency and wisdom of Christian and Muslim women and religious leaders, this authoritative and insightful book proposes an unmatched view of religion and the imperative to consider the positive role faith can play in ending VAWG."Angelica Pino, Grants Manager, SVRI"This is a nuanced and accessible analysis of the significance of religion in VAWG in two faith traditions, Christianity and Islam. Its focus on women’s religious experiences in the context of violence fills a gap in the literature available for academics, policymakers and practitioners." Brenda Bartelink, University of Groningen, The Netherlands"When working with gender equality in religious societies, I often felt overwhelmed and confused. Having read this book, I feel much better equipped to navigate the complexity. It is clear, pedagogical and full of real voices. I warmly recommend to all." Virginia Manzitti, Head of Sector, European Commission DEVCO/INTPA"A must-read for all practitioners, academics and policymakers committed to ending violence against women and girls. Without shying away from the complexity, le Roux and Pertek state the case and offer essential recommendations for secular and religious actors to more effectively collaborate to end violence."Andrea Kaufmann, World Vision International"This book is for those who want a more nuanced understanding of the ambiguous role of religion in VAWG, based on the authors' own research experience and the projects of various organizations. You will enjoy the differentiated approach based on sound, up-to-date research." Benjamin Kalkum, Development Worker for GIZ ZambiaTable of ContentsPart I: Introduction 1. Out of stock

Book SynopsisBringing together ecofeminism and ecological literary criticism (ecocriticism), this book presents diverse ways of understanding and responding to the tangled relationships between the personal, social, and environmental dimensions of human experience and expression. Literature and Ecofeminism explores the intersections of sexuality, gender, embodiment, and the natural world articulated in literary works from Shakespeare through to contemporary literature. Bringing together essays from a global group of contributors, this volume draws on American literature, as well as Spanish, South African, Taiwanese, and Indian literature, in order to further the dialogue between ecofeminism and ecocriticism and demonstrate the ongoing relevance of ecofeminism for facilitating critical readings of literature. In doing so, the book opens up multiple directions for ecofeminist ideas and practices, as well as new possibilities for interpreting literature. This comprehensiTrade Review"Literature and Ecofeminism: Intersectional and International Voices is a narrative symbiosis of literary and scholarly voices converging on ecofeminist thought. Dealing with various themes, issues, and concerns of ecofeminism, the 13 chapters weave truly compelling connections across different literary voices. The international scholars who make up this collection bring forward the ecofeminist voices of Native American, African American, English, Scottish, American, Taiwanese, Caribbean, Spanish, Indian, and South African writers in powerful and dynamic ways. The topics are diverse and refreshing, covering Shakespeare’s Ophelia, 18th century British critic Anna Letitia Barbauld, Mary Austin, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Zora Neale Hurston, Ann Pancake, Peter Matthiessen, Linda Hogan, Jade Chen, and, surprisingly, T.S. Eliot. They all help expand the repertoire of ecofeminism in this skillfully prepared collection." — Serpil Oppermann, Professor of English, Hacettepe University, Turkey and President of EASLCE"Ever since its origins, ecofeminism has advocated for the dismantling of all the interweaved forms of oppression that encapsulate women, nonhuman animals, marginal humans, and whatever subject has been marked as "other" by dominants systems of power, including the earth. Merging with literary studies, these emancipatory stances have found their narratives and new critical landscapes. With its rich plurality of angles and visions, Literature and Ecofeminism: Intersectional and International Voices continues to enrich this seminal conversation, demonstrating the key role of feminist ecocriticism in shaping creative epistemologies of liberation that are essential to the imagination of our time." — Serenella Iovino, Professor of Comparative Literature, University of Turin, ItalyTable of ContentsEditor’s Preface Sam Mickey; Foreword Greta Gaard; Introduction Patrick D. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisOffending Girls challenges simplistic representations of 'bad' girls in the twenty-first century and argues that the interventionist thrust which characterizes the contemporary youth justice system has had a particularly pernicious impact on girls.Trade Review‘At last an intelligent, up to date and comprehensive exposure of the myths surrounding the ‘new offending girl’ and their impact on youth justice practice.Offending Girls: Young Women and Youth Justice is essential reading for all those who are prepared to make the effort to look beyond the headlines of the ‘ladettes’ and the ‘violent girl gangs’ who are now ‘worse than the boys’, Through extensive original research with girls and practitioners, Sharpe uncovers the realities of ‘growing up good’ in the 21st century.’ – John Muncie, Professor of Criminology, The Open University'This book offers a fascinating insight into the lives of girls who have offended and provides an edgy alternative to the usual accounts of female crime that all too frequently ignore the voices of the women themselves. The reader is provided with a background to the offending behaviour of these women and the author attempts to offer some explanation for their offending rather than the relying on the usual account which explains girls’ criminal behaviour by likening them to boys. In this way, the book offers these women some agency and allows them to take responsibility for their actions instead of repeatedly classifying criminal women as victims of crime themselves or as helpless individuals that are not aware of the actions they are committing. This academic analysis of the lives of criminal young women is an important contribution to the growing body of research focused on women and their propensity to engage in offending behaviour and could help criminal justice agencies to look at the way they manage these women. Specifically it could inform their decision-making processes based on real life histories of offending women rather than relying on anecdotal and often androcentric work. The text offers useful insights into working with these girls in the 21st century to those who work or study in the criminal justice field, and indeed is relevant for anyone who is interested in the place of young women in the criminal system.'-Katy Page, University of Leicester and London Probation Trust, in Probation Journal vol 59 no 4Table of Contents1. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis anthology assembles 144 primary texts and documents written by women between 1550 and 1700 and reveals a comprehensive view of the intellectual and literary lives of women in early modern England. The writings range from poetry to philosophical treatises, addressing a wide array of subjects.Trade Review"Reading Early Modern Women is an essential resource for teaching and research, providing as it does a wide array of texts not easily accessed, from medical books, through prophecies and letters, to poetry and music. Contextualized both critically and historically, this book allows contemporary readers to benefit from the dazzling array of early modern women's writing." -- Marion Wynne-Davies, University of Dundee"This book should certainly be recommended to students as an expert guide through a range of materials which will be new to them; it will also be of invaluable use to scholars in the field, as it makes available and discusses a fascinating number of texts otherwise available only in archives. One of the book's many strengths is the way in which each text and each genre is not only adeptly introduced, but is also cross-referenced with other works, primary and secondary, both in the anthology and beyond it. This serves not only to open up the expanding field of early modern women's writing to the newcomer, but also to indicate ways in which researchers can expand their studies across a number of interrelated literary areas." -- Hilary Hinds, Lancaster University, UK"Reading Early Modern Women is an astonishing achievement. Bringing together 150 manuscript and print texts--many published here for the first time--as well as commentaries by more than 80 scholars, this remarkable collection introduces us to a very broad spectrum of the literary achievements of women. It should quickly become the centerpiece of many undergraduate and graduate courses in early modern literature, history, and women's studies. Thanks to Ostovich and Sauer's extraordinary efforts, early modern women writers may finally get the Renaissance they so richly deserve." -- Douglas A. Brooks, Texas A&M University"This imaginatively conceived and brilliantly executed anthology with its ingeniously chosen texts, its illustrative images from the original books or manuscripts, and its impressive array of distinguished contributing editors shows that whatever their disadvantages and the injustices of their society early modern women did indeed have not just a room of their own but a whole house, a whole palace, and even (as Christine de Pisan insisted), a whole city. Ostovich and Sauer have produced an invaluable resource for anybody interested in Renaissance literature or women's studies." -- Anne Lake Prescott, Professor of English at Barnard College and coeditor of Female and Male Voices in EarlyModern England: A Renaissance Anthology"Reading Early Modern Women is an astonishing achievement. Book SynopsisThere's a problem with school lunch in America. Big Food companies have largely replaced the nation's school cooks by supplying cafeterias with cheap, precooked hamburger patties and chicken nuggets chock-full of industrial fillers. Yet it's no secret that meals cooked from scratch with nutritious, locally sourced ingredients are better for children, workers, and the environment. So why not empower lunch ladies to do more than just unbox and reheat factory-made food? And why not organize together to make healthy, ethically sourced, free school lunches a reality for all children? The Labor of Lunch aims to spark a progressive movement that will transform food in American schools, and with it the lives of thousands of low-paid cafeteria workers and the millions of children they feed. By providing a feminist history of the US National School Lunch Program, Jennifer E. Gaddis recasts the humble school lunch as an important and often overlooked form of public care. Through vivid narration aTrade Review“The Labor of Lunch lays out how transforming the food culture in American schools can significantly improve both the lives of the country’s low-wage cafeteria workers and those of the millions of children they feed every day.” * Quality Assurance Magazine *"Argues that universally free, from-scratch lunches turns the school cafeteria into a vital community resource: one that helps kids develop healthy eating habits and provides skilled jobs for workers." -- Tom Philpott * Mother Jones *“When we think about the crumbling national infrastructure that holds our country back, Jennifer Gaddis argues that we need to look beyond bridges, broadband, and high-speed rail –– and see the urgency of bringing our nation's 100,000 school cafeterias into the 21st century. She's on exactly the right track. What if our nation's largest restaurant chain –– our 100,000 schools –– could be retooled as an engine for creating good jobs in our communities, building our local farm economies, and nourishing our kids with fresh-cooked food?" -- Curt Ellis * Co-Founder & CEO, FoodCorps *"A welcome addition to the growing library of works focusing on labor in the food system. This topic deserves attention and Gaddis is looking at the plight of an especially neglected group, the people who make and serve food to kids in schools. . . . Let grass-roots advocacy begin!" -- Marion Nestle * Food Politics *"The book seeks to engage the reader to learn about the power struggles of ‘lunch ladies’ and how such discourses are maintained in society. Gaddis is an advocate with a strong interest in environmental justice, which comes through in the writing. The book is more than just an ethnography of school lunches; it is a reminder that we need to revisit our food systems and consider how this policy area is still very much classed, gendered, and racialized. . . . This book reignites the importance of food activism and recognizes historical roots while seeking and creating theories of change." * Contemporary Sociology *"The Labor of Lunch is a comprehensive and readable work of activist scholarship examining school feeding in the US. This work is suitable for advanced undergraduate students, graduate students and scholars of school food policy, institutional feeding and history of food systems, as well as those interested in food movements, and care-labor." * Food, Culture & Society *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgements Introduction: Why We Need to Fix the Food and the Jobs 1 • The Radical Roots of School Lunch 2 • The Fight for Food Justice 3 • From Big Food to Real Food Lite 4 • Cafeteria Workers in the “Prison of Love” 5 • Building a Real Food Economy Conclusion: Organizing a New Economy of Care Notes Bibliography Index

In recent years, company avowals in support of diversity, much-touted programs for women in STEM, and, most importantly, a tight labor market with near parity in women pursuing geoscience credentials might lead us to expect progress for women in this industry's corporate ranks. Yet, for all the talk of the great crew change, the industry remains overwhelmingly white and male. Sociologist Christine L. Williams asks, where are the women? To answer this question, Williams embarked on a decade-long investigationone involving one hundred in-depth interviews, a longitudinal survey, and ethnographic researchthat allowed her to observe the industry in times of boom and bust. She found that when the industry expands, women may be able to walk through the door, but whenthe industry contracts, the door becomes a revolving one, whirling ever faster,as companies retreat to their white male core.
