Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Arbeitsplatz Privathaushalt: Städtische

Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Arab Feminism and Islamic History: The Transnational Life and Work of Lebanese-Syrian Writer Widad Sakakini (1913--1991)
Book SynopsisWidad Sakakini's work reflects the transformations of Arab societies since the beginning of the twentieth century, particularly the changing gender roles. This study of her shows how she took globally circulating feminist concerns, translated them into her local contexts, and rooted them in Arab-Islamic history through her essays, short stories, and biographies. As an "Arab feminist", being both a feminist and a Muslima went together well for her. By navigating between liberal, socialist, nationalist, and Islamist peer groups, she simultaneously negotiated her own multiple forms of belonging. Taking her life as an example of a transnational biography, this study further argues that it would be unsatisfactory to reduce her complex affiliations and trajectory, spanning Lebanon, Syria, and Egypt, to a mere Islamic, secular or Syrian identity. Rather, she was concerned with balancing and reconciling supposed opposites, such as East and West, reason and spirituality, men and women.

Book SynopsisThe author investigates the points of contact between literature, visual arts and feminist criticism by offering fresh readings of selected Romantic and Victorian poems about women and a discussion of their wide-ranging visual history a subject which has not yet been undertaken in a book-length study. The innovative feature of the project lies in its scope and merit: extensive readings of 19th century poetry, informed by carefully chosen critical approaches, are followed by a rich overview and analysis of visual renderings of the poems in question. uczyska-Hodys has succeeded in bringing to light previously unknown or undiscussed works, and reappraised many well-known paintings and illustrations.

V&R unipress GmbH Frauen erzahlen Geschichte: Historische Romane osterreichischer Autorinnen von der Ersten zur Zweiten Republik
Book SynopsisResearch has shown that the historical novels after 1918 are more concerned with the present than with the past. They reflect the political and social upheavals as well as the contemporaneous changes in the First Republic of Austria. This volume presents historical novels by Austrian women authors who have so far either received marginal treatment or been overlooked altogether, but whose literary work was met with great resonance in their time. Apart from literary works, biographical portraits of the generation of female authors who flourished during the First and Second Republic are delineated, as well as through new analyses of works the history of Austrian literature. The discourse of femininity in the respective historical transformations also plays an important role in this presentation.

Book SynopsisIn her forms, contents, texts and images Else Lasker-Schüler expresses performatively the possibility of the lack of expression. She describes terrible scenes in ostentatiously poetic pictures. On the side she herself comments and quotes constantly her own works. Both peculiarities stem from the same transmedial formal principle of the arabesque. The arabesque can not only serve as decorative frame, but also as hiding place to evade the prohibition of representation. The proof of this formal principle reveals Lasker-Schülers long underestimated influences of the Jewish scriptural tradition. In her arabesques Lasker-Schüler captures the precarity of the expression of distress and injustice her artistic expression implies the possibility of silence.

Book SynopsisWomen want to be all of themselves and want to be their own selves, not examples of types. They want to work out their own individual combinations of what have been called the masculine and feminine parts of themselves. This book focuses on that possibility, on women receiving themselves, all of themselves, wisely and gladly.

Sternberg Press Feminist Takes: Early Works by Zelimir Zilnik
Book SynopsisEssays that form a dynamic discussion among leading feminist thinkers on Želimir Žilnik's film Early Works (1968).This collection of short essays brings together a dynamic discussion among feminist thinkers, on the filmic fate of Jugoslava, the leading character in Želimir Žilnik's film Early Works (1968). The cinematic narrative follows Jugoslava as she leaves her lumpenproletariat family to lead a small group of vagabonds after the failed 1968 student movement in Socialist Yugoslavia. The group travels to the countryside to bring the teachings of young Marx and Engels to the peasants. Jugoslava passionately wants to emancipate local village women, delivering motivational lessons on contraception. However, the group's attempt to instigate a revolutionary program among the peasants fails miserably; instead, the villagers attack the young men and sexually assault Jugoslava. Her revolutionary passion burns fast and gloriously, and for this she is punished, through the film's own allegorical reflexivity. In the last scene, the male comrades chase the heroine through the barren, foggy, muddy fields of Pannonia, harassing her, only to finally shoot her and set her body on fire. Jugoslava dies in flames.Canonical within the Yugoslav New Film--a dissident cinema faction questioning the status quo of bureaucratic state socialism in the late 1960s and early 1970s--Early Works has received limited discussion in terms of its gendered representation of revolutionary action and the presence and absence of feminist critique addressing this historical period. The volume is a part of Antonia Majaca's ongoing collaborative investigation Feminist Takes which considers the relation between the Non-Western cinema and feminist theory and practice and is itself a material trace and redaction of a series of focused gatherings approaching the film to re-read its significance from multiple, indisciplined, feminist locations.
