    10 in stock

Book Synopsis“When you look over your own library, who do you see?” Since founding the beloved Well-Read Black Girl book club in 2015, Glory Edim has emerged as a literary tastemaker for a new generation. Continuing her life’s work to brighten and enrich American reading lives through the work of legendary Black authors, she now launches her Well-Read Black Girl Library Series with On Girlhood. This meticulously selected anthology features a wide range of unique voices, finally illuminating a distinctly robust sector of contemporary literature: groundbreaking short stories that explore the thin yet imperative line between Black girlhood and womanhood. Divided into four themes—Innocence, Belonging, Love, and Self-Discovery—the unforgettable young protagonists within contend with the trials of coming of age that shape who they are and what they will become. With this tradition in mind, Innocence opens with Jamaica Kincaid’s searing “Girl,” in which a mother offers fierce instructions to her impressionable daughter. This deceptively simple yet profound monologue is followed by Toni Morrison’s first and only published short story, the now-canonical “Recitatif,” about two neglected girls who come together in youth only to find themselves on opposite picket lines in adulthood. In Belonging, Toni Cade Bambara’s “The Lesson” follows rambunctious students on a field trip where they are exposed to a new world of luxury. In Love, Dana Johnson’s “Melvin in the Sixth Grade” captures the yearning of a lovesick teen smitten with the only boy who looks her way. And in Self-Discovery, Edwidge Danticat’s “Seeing Things Simply” charts the creative awakening of Princesse, a young woman with a hunger to be fully seen. These inspiring tales of world builders and rule breakers conclude with Zora Neale Hurston’s “How It Feels to Be Colored Me,” a personal essay brimming with wit and strength: “When covered by the waters, I am; and the ebb but reveals me again.” At times heartbreaking and at times hilarious, these stories boldly push past flat stereotypes and powerfully convey the beauty of Black girlhood. In bringing together an array of influential authors—past and present—whose work remains timeless, Glory Edim has created an indispensable compendium for every home library and a soul-stirring guide to coming of age. Featuring stories by Jamaica Kincaid, Toni Morrison, Dorothy West, Rita Dove, Camille Acker, Toni Cade Bambara, Amina Gautier, Alexia Arthurs, Dana Johnson, Alice Walker, Gwendolyn Brooks, Edwidge Danticat, Shay Youngblood, Paule Marshall, and Zora Neale Hurston.Trade Review"An expansive, decades-spanning view of Black girlhood.... The collection is genuinely riveting; the stories narrate the lives of indelible characters with humor, irony, and immense skill. And while each story differs greatly in setting and tone, through lines arise... A profound, prismatic collection." -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review

  • Women v. Religion: The Case Against Faith—and for

Pitchstone Publishing Women v. Religion: The Case Against Faith—and for

Book SynopsisThroughout history, religion has been used as a tool of female subjugation. Women have been deemed less worthy than men, have been prevented from owning property, and worse—all in the name of a higher power. In recent decades, women have made progress in terms of equal rights with men, at least in Western democracies, but still, why has the United States never had a female president? Why aren’t more women heads of Fortune 500 companies? Why do politicians in the West continue to attack women’s reproductive rights? As this volume explores, it would be hard to find a bigger culprit than religion when identifying the last cultural barriers to full gender equality. With topics ranging from the subjugation of women in the Bible to the shame and guilt felt by women due to religious teaching, this volume makes clear that only by rejecting the very system that limits their autonomy will women be fully liberated from its malignant influences, not just in codified law but also in cultural practice.Trade Review"This book gathers together some heartfelt writings of women who give overwhelming evidence of the multiple ways in which religion has betrayed and abused the female sex. To read these writings is to realize that religion has been far more cruel than kind to women; and this is particularly reprehensible in view of the fact that it is based on lies, concocted for profit and for the benefit of men. A thoroughly enlightening work." -- Barbara G. Walker, author of The Woman's Encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets"These essays about dealing with the socially ingrained biases against those who identify as female reveal how religion instigates and perpetuates those biases. All people will benefit from reading this comprehensive collection that explains the obstacles and struggles women face in and out of religion." -- Amanda Knief, author of The Citizen Lobbyist"In this collection of powerful essaysboth personal and academicKaren Garst thoughtfully and comprehensively tackles the subjugation of women by the Abrahamic religions. The book provides compelling arguments to back the proposition that these religions continue to assign second-class status to women around the world. The wide range of expertise offered by the anthology makes it an important addition to the growing pantheon of contemporary religious critiques--this book should serve as a clarion call to feminists everywhere to discard the psychological chains that religion imposes." -- Monica L. Miller, Senior Counsel, American Humanist Association"Reading Women v. Religion is truly a journey through the minds and lives of women who have experienced the oppression and intimidation of the Abrahamic religions. They often lay their inner struggles bare as they take you through the journey of being in search of validation and wholeness. The essays clearly show that as one attempts to meet the constrictions of religious 'rightness' and 'goodness,' they become lost to themselves. Shame, guilt, sin prevail until religion's grip is released allowing for the full expression of the individual." -- Rebecca (Becky) Hale, President, American Humanist Association"Despite the patriarchal and misogynist origins of many world religions, women of all ethnicities have the highest rates of religious participation across the globe. What accounts for this seeming contradiction? What social and cultural factors can address this disparity? The multi-faceted essays of Karen Garst's Women v. Religion provide an insightful historical critique of the dominance of organized religion and how it undermines gender equality, women's self-determination, and the agency of women of color. The book is a valuable resource for secular and religious scholars seeking an alternative to the thesis that organized religion and faith are necessary moral and social forces in women's lives." -- Sikivu Hutchinson, author Moral Combat: Black Atheists , Gender Politics and the Values Wars , and Godless Americana: Race and Religious Rebels"Abrahamic religions infantilize all people, with their father figures and supplication demands. But women are especially subordinated. How? Karen Garst explains, in a book that provides a valuable compendium of smart, thoughtful critiques of religion's treatment of women. This tightly edited collection of essays by an array of accomplished women writers will enlighten and entertain even as it infuriates you with its deep dive into the patriarchy that is religion." -- Robyn E Blumner, President and CEO, Center for Inquiry and Executive Director, Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason & Science"If you ever wondered about women's roles in religion through the ages, Women v. Religion will thoroughly educate you. If you ever doubted that religion has systematically subjugated women, this book will dispel those doubts. This set of essays is clearly written by 13 secular women and carefully edited by Karen Garst, but it's not exactly an easy read. It's a serious, revelatory, sometimes revolting and always carefully portrayed collection of women's trials with religion." -- Linda LaScola, co-author with Daniel C. Dennett of Caught in the Pulpit: Leaving Belief Behind"This is an important and timely book, at a time when Islam is being labelled as a 'feminist religion' by ignorant feminists who know little of its bloodied past. It is important to look at the time before Islam, at the lives of women erased during early Islam, so this myth of an equal religion cannot be popularized." -- Sadia Hameed, Spokesperson, Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain

Book SynopsisA bracing and fresh look at a lifelong struggle with depression and mental illnessPlagued by depression her entire life, it wasn’t until her early fifties that writer and book critic Bethanne Patrick, advocating for her own care, received a medical diagnosis that would set her on the path to wellness and stability.Recognizing the intergenerational effects of trauma and mental health struggles, Patrick unearths the stories of her past in order to forge a better future for herself and her two daughters, dismantling the stigmas surrounding mental health challenges that can plague families into silence and resignation. Life B is an intimate portrait we haven’t yet seen—of a lifelong struggle with depression, of midlife diagnosis and newly found strength. Most important, it’s a life-affirming blueprint of how to accept and transcend the limitations of mental illness.

Book SynopsisTraversing science, politics, and technology, Our Biggest Experiment shines a spotlight on the little-known scientists who sounded the alarm to reveal the history behind the defining story of our age: the climate crisis. Our understanding of the Earth''s fluctuating environment is an extraordinary story of human perception and scientific endeavor. It also began much earlier than we might think. In Our Biggest Experiment, Alice Bell takes us back to climate change science''s earliest steps in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, through the point when concern started to rise in the 1950s and right up to today, where the “debate” is over and the world is finally starting to face up to the reality that things are going to get a lot hotter, a lot drier (in some places), and a lot wetter (in others), with catastrophic consequences for most of Earth''s biomes. Our Biggest Experiment recounts how the world became addicted to fossil fuels, how we discovered that electricity could be a savior, and how renewable energy is far from a twentieth-century discovery. Bell cuts through complicated jargon and jumbles of numbers to show how we''re getting to grips with what is now the defining issue of our time. The message she relays is ultimately hopeful; harnessing the ingenuity and intelligence that has driven the history of climate change research can result in a more sustainable and bearable future for humanity.

Book SynopsisWinner of the Popular Culture Association’s Emily Toth Best Book in Women’s Studies AwardFrom an author praised for writing “delicious social history” (Dwight Garner, The New York Times) comes a lively account of memorable Miss America contestants, protests, and scandals—and how the pageant, now in its one hundredth year, serves as an unintended indicator of feminist progressLooking for Miss America is a fast–paced narrative history of a curious and contradictory institution. From its start in 1921 as an Atlantic City tourist draw to its current incarnation as a scholarship competition, the pageant has indexed women’s status during periods of social change—the post–suffrage 1920s, the Eisenhower 1950s, the #MeToo era. This ever–changing institution has been shaped by war, evangelism, the rise of television and reality TV, and, significantly, by contestants who confounded expectations.Spotlighting individuals, from Yolande Betbeze, whose refusal to pose in swimsuits led an angry sponsor to launch the rival Miss USA contest, to the first black winner, Vanessa Williams, who received death threats and was protected by sharpshooters in her hometown parade, Margot Mifflin shows how women made hard bargains even as they used the pageant for economic advancement. The pageant’s history includes, crucially, those it excluded; the notorious Rule Seven, which required contestants to be “of the white race,” was retired in the 1950s, but no women of color were crowned until the 1980s.In rigorously researched, vibrant chapters that unpack each decade of the pageant, Looking for Miss America examines the heady blend of capitalism, patriotism, class anxiety, and cultural mythology that has fueled this American ritual.

Gina Frangello tells the morally complex story of her adulterous relationship with a lover and her shortcomings as a mother, and in doing so, highlights the forces that shaped, silenced, and shamed her: everyday misogyny, puritanical expectations regarding female sexuality and maternal sacrifice, and male oppression. —Adrienne Brodeur, author of Wild GameGina Frangello spent her early adulthood trying to outrun a youth marked by poverty and violence. Now a long-married wife and devoted mother, the better life she carefully built is emotionally upended by the death of her closest friend. Soon, awakened to fault lines in her troubled marriage, Frangello is caught up in a recklessly passionate affair, leading a double life while continuing to project the image of the perfect family. When her secrets are finally uncovered, both her home and her identity will implode, testing the limits of desire, responsibility, love, and forgiveness.Blow Your House Down is a powerful testimony about the ways our culture seeks to cage women in traditional narratives of self-sacrifice and erasure. Frangello uses her personal story to examine the place of women in contemporary society: the violence they experience, the rage they suppress, the ways their bodies often reveal what they cannot say aloud, and finally, what it means to transgress being good in order to reclaim your own life.

  • In Deep: How I Survived Gangs, Heroin, and Prison

Chicago Review Press In Deep: How I Survived Gangs, Heroin, and Prison

Book Synopsis2019 Chicago Writers Association Book of the Year Winner Before Angalia Bianca became one of Chicago’s foremost authorities on violence interruption and prevention, receiving international recognition and a Resolution for Bravery from the City of Chicago, she was a criminal, a master manipulator, and a brilliant con artist. Bianca spent twelve years in prison for forgery, embezzlement, drug dealing, and theft. But now she has gone far beyond the expectations for recovery to a life of service fueled by an unrelenting determination to make a difference. Bianca was once a gang member; now she puts her life on the line to interrupt gang violence. For thirty-six years she was a heroin addict; now she mentors people in recovery. She was homeless; now she appears as an invited guest to speak at events across the country and around the world. Bianca crawled out of the deepest hole imaginable; now through her work with the renowned violence prevention group Cure Violence, she climbs back down to change lives. In Deep is a blunt, honest look at Bianca's life. Her mind-blowing stories take readers deep into a world of grit and gang violence that seems inescapable. Her story is at once fascinating, terrifying, and ultimately full of hope. Readers will be inspired by Bianca's escape from the depths of depravity, and by her commitment to those facing the worst that the city of Chicago has to offer. Trade Review"A harrowing, heart-wrenching account of addiction, jail time, redemption, and renewal, In Deep will inspire you to go out and make a difference yourself. After almost losing her own life (over and over again!), Bianca has saved many others' lives and uplifted countless more with her fierce, fearless determination and never-take-no-for-an-answer brassy sass." Pamela Des Barres, author of I'm with the Band"A riveting, raw, and brutally honest portrayal of a roller-coaster street life fueled by gang violence and drug addiction; a real page-turner that sucks you in from the get-go and takes you on an adventure you can only imagine in your wildest dreams. Awe-inspiring and nothing short of a miracle, Bianca is a force to be reckoned with and an unlikely heroine and role model. She has proved that nothing is impossible and it's never too late." Vera Ramone King, author of Poisoned Heart"When I read In Deep I was taken to the streets and prisons of Chicago and was sucked into Bianca's life. It is an unbelievable account of drugs, prostitution, mafia, and rock 'n' roll. I couldn't put it down! I felt like I had lived it with her." Carmine Appice, legendary rock drummer, author of Stick It!"Bianca is the real f*cking deal. Every harrowing story of hers is much more than one person should experience in her lifetime, and she has survived dozens of them. The fact that she is still alive and using her every remaining dear breath to now serve humanity rather than deplete it is inspiring." Christian Picciolini, author White American Youth"Riveting, poignant, and necessary. You can tell that Bianca means every word she says, so you believe in her story. Who better to address the violence in Chicago than someone who has lived it?" Vic Mensa, rapper, songwriter, and producer"A story of hope, rife with the belief that people and cities in the most dire of circumstances will one day overcome them." Booklist"When In Deep arrived, I snuck away for a weekend and read it cover to cover. The life experiences and fear resonated all too well. Angalia has relied on her hope and discipline to make a difference. What a wonderful force of nature!" Angie Bowie, author of Backstage Passes

Chicago Review Press I Am Not Your Slave: A Memoir

Book SynopsisI am Not Your Slave is the shocking true story of a young African girl, Tupa, who was abducted from southwestern Africa and funneled through an extensive yet almost completely unknown human trafficking network spanning the entire African continent. As she is transported from the point of her abduction on a remote farm near the Namibian-Angolan border and channeled to her ultimate destination in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, her three-year odyssey exposes the brutal horrors of a modern day middle passage. Tupa’s harrowing experience, including her daring escape and eventual return home, sheds light on the most shocking aspects of modern day slavery, as well as the essential determination to be free.Trade Review"This incredible story offers three important insights: how it is possible for someone to be trafficked, why it might not be immediately apparent someone is in slavery, and, most important, why the antislavery movement needs strong survivor advocates like Tupa Tjipombo." Joanna Ewart-James, executive director, Freedom United"A riveting story of a young girl's courage in the face of unimaginable terror, her determination to fight for her dignityand above all, her courage to speak out and break the silence about the human trafficking nightmare we have ignored for too long." Book SynopsisThe original edition of Salonnières, Furies, and Fairies, published in 2005, was a pathbreaking work of early modern literary history, exploring women’s role in the rise of the fairy tale and their use of this new genre to carve out roles as major contributors to the literature of their time. This new edition, with a new introduction and a forward by acclaimed scholar Allison Stedman, emphasizes the scholarly legacy of Anne Duggan’s original work, and its continuing field-changing implications. The book studies the works of two of the most prolific seventeenth-century women writers, Madeleine de Scudéry and Marie-Catherine d'Aulnoy. Analyzing their use of the novel, the chronicle, and the fairy tale, Duggan examines how Scudéry and d'Aulnoy responded to and participated in the changes of their society, but from different generational and ideological positions. This study also takes into account the history of the salon, an unofficial institution that served as a locus for elite women's participation in the cultural and literary production of their society. In order to highlight the debates that emerged with the increased participation of aristocratic women within the public sphere, the book also explores the responses of two academicians, Nicolas Boileau and Charles Perrault.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Foreword by Allison Stedman Introduction to the Second Edition Preface Chapter 1: Politics, Gender, and Cultural Change Chapter 2: Love Orders Chaos: Madeleine de Scudéry’s Clélie, Histoire Romaine Chapter 3: Adults at Play: Les Chronqiues des Samedis de Mademoiselle de Scudéry Chapter 4: Boileau and Perrault: The Public Sphere and Female Folly Chapter 5: The Tyranny of Patriarchs in L’Histoire d’Hypolite, Comte de Duglas Chapter 6: Fairy Tales and Mondanité Afterword Works Cited Index

A debut from Melinda Gates, a timely and necessary call to action for women's empowerment. “The Moment of Lift is an urgent call to courage. It changed how I think about myself, my family, my work, and what’s possible in the world. Melinda weaves together vulnerable, brave storytelling and compelling data to make this one of those rare books that you carry in your heart and mind long after the last page.” ―Brené Brown, Ph.D., author of the New York Times #1 bestseller Dare to Lead “In her book, Melinda tells the stories of the inspiring people she’s met through her work all over the world, digs into the data, and powerfully illustrates issues that need our attention―from child marriage to gender inequity in the workplace.” ― President Barack Obama“Melinda Gates has spent many years working with women around the world. This book is an urgent manifesto for an equal society where women are valued and recognized in all spheres of life. Most of all, it is a call for unity, inclusion and connection. We need this message more than ever.” ― Malala YousafzaiMelinda Gates's book is a lesson in listening. A powerful, poignant, and ultimately humble call to arms. ― Tara Westover, author of the New York Times #1 bestseller Educated“How can we summon a moment of lift for human beings – and especially for women? Because when you lift up women, you lift up humanity.”For the last twenty years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: If you want to lift a society up, you need to stop keeping women down. In this moving and compelling book, Melinda shares lessons she’s learned from the inspiring people she’s met during her work and travels around the world. As she writes in the introduction, “That is why I had to write this book―to share the stories of people who have given focus and urgency to my life. I want all of us to see ways we can lift women up where we live.” Melinda’s unforgettable narrative is backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention―from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace. And, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world―and ourselves. Writing with emotion, candor, and grace, she introduces us to remarkable women and shows the power of connecting with one another. When we lift others up, they lift us up, too.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION In an inspiring follow-up to her critically acclaimed, #1 bestselling memoir Becoming, former First Lady Michelle Obama shares practical wisdom and powerful strategies for staying hopeful and balanced in today’s highly uncertain world. There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with readers, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much? Michelle Obama offers readers a series of fresh stories and insightful reflections on change, challenge, and power, including her belief that when we light up for others, we can illuminate the richness and potential of the world around us, discovering deeper truths and new pathways for progress. Drawing from her experiences as a mother, daughter, spouse, friend, and First Lady, she shares the habits and principles she has developed to successfully adapt to change and overcome various obstacles —the earned wisdom that helps her continue to “become.” She details her most valuable practices, like “starting kind,” “going high,” and assembling a “kitchen table” of trusted friends and mentors. With trademark humor, candor, and compassion, she also explores issues connected to race, gender, and visibility, encouraging readers to work through fear, find strength in community, and live with boldness. “When we are able to recognize our own light, we become empowered to use it,” writes Michelle Obama. Book Synopsis"A warm and expansive portrait of a woman’s mind that feels at once singular and universal," this collection of essays interweaves commentary on modern life, feminism, art, and sex with the author''s own experiences of obsession, heartbreak, and vulnerability (BuzzFeed).Like a song that feels written just for you, Larissa Pham''s debut work of nonfiction captures the imagination and refuses to let go. Pop Song is a book about love and about falling in love—with a place, or a painting, or a person—and the joy and terror inherent in the experience of that love. Plumbing the well of culture for clues and patterns about love and loss—from Agnes Martin''s abstract paintings to James Turrell''s transcendent light works, and Anne Carson''s Eros the Bittersweet to Frank Ocean''s Blonde—Pham writes of her youthful attempts to find meaning in travel, sex, drugs, and art, before sensing that she might need to turn her gaze upon herself.   Pop Song is also a book about distances, near and far. As she travels from Taos, New Mexico, to Shanghai, China and beyond, Pham meditates on the miles we are willing to cover to get away from ourselves, or those who hurt us, and the impossible gaps that can exist between two people sharing a bed. Pop Song is a book about all the routes by which we might escape our own needs before finally finding a way home. There is heartache in these pages, but Pham''s electric ways of seeing create a perfectly fractured portrait of modern intimacy that is triumphant in both its vulnerability and restlessness. "Each of the essays in this debut collection reads like a mini-memoir . . . in which the author reflects on her experiences of young love, trauma, and transcendence through discussions of art and music . . . with an intimacy that is at once tender and expansive." —New York magazine

Book SynopsisThe lives and work of diverse unsung heroes of design gathered in smart new book. Familiar histories of graphic design have placed women in the margins, their work unworthy of discussion and preservation. The good news is that with a little digging, we are confirming that women of many backgrounds and ethnicities have long been active in the profession: running presses in the British colonies, illustrating books in the studios of artistically cutting-edge Harlem, and drawing type in the drafting rooms of major type foundries. This collection of 15 fascinating illustratedessays reveals their stories, countering the history we've been fed and expanding the small canon of (overwhelmingly white) women in graphic design. Baseline Shift tells the stories of auteurs, champions of social justice, and the uncelebrated women who used design to make change, do business, and to make a living. It is essential reading for students and practitioners of graphic design as well as those with an interest in women's history.

Book SynopsisIn the spirit of the bestseller Fly Girls comes the definitive and compelling story of the first American woman to receive a pilot's license, Harriet Quimby. The early years of the twentieth century were frenetic with change and progress. Headlines declared that "the era of women has dawned." Against this changing historical backdrop, Harriet Quimby's life stands out as undeniably extraordinary, embodying the tumultuous, exciting era in which she lives. Though little known, her story is dramatic: she rose from humble beginnings as a dirt-poor farm girl to become a globe-trotting journalist, history-making aviator and international celebrity. When she tragically died in 1912 at the age of thirty seven, her story faded into history, with her many accomplishments-including being the first women to fly solo over the English Channel-overshadowed by major historical events, including the sinking of the Titanic.

Book SynopsisBorn to merchant-class parents who served in the court of Henry VIII and his queens, Anne Vaughan Lock lived in London and Exeter, spent time in Geneva as a religious exile, belonged to the Cooke sisters’ political-religious circle, maintained friendships with prominent Protestant leaders, and engaged the issues of her day. As a recognized public figure, she took on the roles of reformer, poet, translator, correspondent, spiritual counselor, and political advocate. During her lifetime, she published two books, both of which were reprinted several times. This volume provides a collection of Lock’s works presented in modern spelling, and it includes additional contemporary materials that place her voice in the larger context of the Tudor period, offering insight into the intertwined complexities of political, social, and religious life in sixteenth-century England. Trade Review“Felch’s comprehensive, detailed, and thoughtfully designed edition is everything that Anne Lock deserves, and that scholars could hope for, providing extensive background essays, contextual primary materials, and modernized texts with explanatory notes. . . . The texts and headnotes amount to a detailed history of sixteenth-century English radical Protestantism and a guide to the traces of theological resistance in heavily censored printed texts and fragmentary surviving manuscripts. A valuable addition to studies of early modern women, this work will change how Anne Lock is perceived among scholars and how widely she is read.” -- Mary Trull, St. Olaf CollegeWinner -- SSEMWG 2022 Josephine Roberts Award for a Scholarly EditionTable of ContentsIllustrations Abbreviations Acknowledgments Key Religious Terms Introduction Texts and Contextual MaterialsSermons of John Calvin (1560) Anne Lock’s Preface to Sermons of John Calvin (1560) Selections from Anne Lock’s Translation of Sermons of John Calvin (1560) A Meditation of a Penitent Sinner from Sermons of John Calvin (1560) Prefatory Sonnets Psalm Sonnets Andro Kemp’s Musical Setting of the Psalm Sonnets (ca. 1562) Contemporary Versions of Psalm 51 Prose Versions (1530–1560) Poetic Paraphrases (1535–1599) John Knox’s Letters to Anne Lock (1556–1562) Selections from Edward Dering’s Sermons, Letters, and Prayers (1570–1575) Anne Lock Dering’s Latin Poem (1572) John Field’s Dedicatory Letter to Anne Lock Prowse (1583) Of the Marks of the Children of God (1590) Anne Lock Prowse’s Preface to Of the Marks of the Children of God (1590) Selections from Anne Lock Prowse’s Translation of Of the Marks of the Children of God (1590) Anne Lock Prowse’s “The Necessity and Benefit of Affliction” from Of the Marks of the Children of God (1590) Lady Margaret Cunningham’s Letter to Her Husband (1607) Bibliography Index
