Rowman & Littlefield Professor Mommy
Book SynopsisProfessor Mommy is designed as a guide for women who are trying to combine the life of the mind with the joys of motherhood. The authors tackle these issues not only during the infant/toddler stages, but also follow the demands of motherhood all the way through the empty nest.Trade ReviewTwo Bowdoin College professors address the challenges of pursuing an academic career while raising children, offering counsel and advice to women seeking to combine 'the life of the mind with the joys of motherhood.' Connelly, the mother of four sons, is an economist whose international research addresses intersections between work and family life; Ghodsee is an expert in gender and women's studies who received Fulbright and National Science Foundation grants. Their individual experiences inform the book, which provides not only a step-by-step program from graduate studies to tenure but also a 'what to expect when you're expecting' and mothering while chiseling out a profile inside ivied halls. Connelly and Ghodsee tell tough truths—academics is a hard and demanding career for anyone, and most difficult for women with children—but they recommend outsourcing whatever does not contribute directly to your job; availing yourself of good full- or part-time child care; finding an institution with fair work-family policies; attending conferences, networking, and coauthoring publications; saying 'no' to nonessential work; relocating as opportunities arise; and staying hyper vigilant about time management. A well-presented guidebook for academics. * Publishers Weekly *Bowdoin faculty members Connelly and Ghodsee are mothers who've struggled with the challenges of research, teaching, publishing, and caring for children in defiance of the conventional wisdom that women in academia have to choose between family and career. They devote an entire chapter to debunking the myths that discourage many women from pursuing tenure during their most fertile productive years. Drawing on their experiences and on surveys of and interviews with a variety of women in academia, they first review the decision to have an academic career and the decision to have children, including how many and when to have them. They proceed with a detailed chronology of the tenure track, a comprehensive guide, and unwavering encouragement. They are frank about sacrifices and challenges encountered during graduate study and the PhD dissertation, and they detail the hurdles presented by low salaries, undesirable work locations, and long working hours. But they also note the rewards of both academic life and motherhood. Women interested in careers in academia should appreciate this helpful, encouraging resource. * Booklist *In Professor Mommy, Rachel Connelly and Kristen Ghodsee present a thorough set of questions for women to consider and strategies to utilize in order to make informed decisions about pursuing both an academic career and family life. ... Professor Mommy is a practical guide written for women who are considering or currently combining family life and the pursuit of tenure. The authors recognize that tenure-track fathers have challenges when they are involved parents of small children, but Connelly and Ghodsee intentionally speak to the particular concerns and situations that mothers face. ... Professor Mommy has many helpful insider tips for any junior faculty member or graduate student who has not had these conversations with a trusted (mommy) mentor. ...[F]or those of us who desire to seek tenure within the existing system, having access to the information in Professor Mommy is invaluable. The book does what it sets out to do, providing information and options for women to make decisions that will position them as best as possible for tenure and promotion within the existing system. Recognizing that the assimilationist approach will not work for every woman, it provides guidance for the many. * Feminist Collections: A Quarterly Of Women's Studies Resources *With this new how-to guide for mothers in academia, Rachel Connelly and Kristen Ghodsee invite women academics to muster their courage and proceed despite the potential pitfalls. Their unblinking analysis of the risks and rewards of combining academic life with motherhood is a welcome and unique addition to the literature on the topic. . . . Connelly and Ghodsee draw from published literature, surveys and interviews of colleagues, and their combined experience to illustrate that it is indeed possible to succeed as both a mother and a faculty member. They offer concrete advice for each stage of the climb from PhD student to full professor, from caretaker of infants to parent of teenage children, encouraging readers to proceed realistically and know that they can achieve their work and life goals if they are committed to the task. The authors are, as they admit, “brutally honest” about the difficult road many “professor mommies” face (8), and they give little credence to the idea that the academy will become more family-friendly in the near future (suggesting that women wait to advocate for systemic change until they have earned the protection of tenure). But this hard-nosed realism is a necessary anchor for their enthusiasm, and the book is an essential resource for anyone considering the life of a “professor mommy." * On Campus With Women *A smart, readable description of the hurdles facing women who have children while in graduate school or on the tenure track. And while the book does not minimize the difficulties of being both mommy and professor, it is directed at women who want to "opt in"....This is an excellent book; the chapter “On Deciding to Become an Academic” is a must-read for students considering graduate school, as is their chapter on debunking the popular myths of mothering in academia (“myth #1: an academic job will allow you to spend more time with your kids”). They are frank about the trade-offs of being a successful academic – you won’t have a clean house, and you might not see your child’s first step – but these are the same struggles of a high achieving mom in any profession. Perhaps that is the point: academia is not a haven from sexism, workaholism, or politics. But if you want to do it anyway (and want to have more than one child!), this book offers clear advice to achieving success. * Inside Higher Ed *Two tenured Bowdoin College professors, economist Rachel Connelly and gender and women's studies scholar Kristen Ghodsee, have thrown out a rope to women scholars in hopes of helping them get a foothold in the slippery slopes of academia without having to forgo motherhood. The pair has just written book enlivened by anecdotes and statistics that offers step-by-step guidance for women at all stages of their families and careers to help them successfully negotiate the 'maternal wall' in academia. Professor Mommy: Finding Work-Family Balance in Academia (Rowman Littlefield 2011) describes in thorny detail the personal costs that many women in academia face, yet offers savvy, encouraging strategies for juggling the demands of an academic career and motherhood. * Bowdoin Campus News *Professor Mommy addresses many concerns of professional women in academia who desire to combine their professions with motherhood. . . . the book is a useful resource for career and employment counselors who see clients with similar issues. This book provides a plethora of information and tactics that are helpful when counseling women interested in pursuing a career in academia while also incorporating a busy home life. . . . an overall outstanding read. . . . Although the purpose of Professor Mommy is to serve as a guide to young women who would like to combine life as an academic with the joys of motherhood, the book is extremely beneficial to counselors who assist women addressing issues of balancing career and family in other occupational areas as well. * Journal of Employment Counseling *Bringing to light the juggling mothers toiling beneath the radar, often in the middle of the night, is precisely the goal of Rachel Connelly’s and Kristen Ghodsee’s enlightening, amusing, and truth-telling book, Professor Mommy: Finding Work-Family Balance in Academia. Their book is a hopeful treatise on the success of mothers working in universities....Part philosophical discourse, part advice, the book is divided into nine conversational chapters—easy for the working mother to peruse between meetings or read straight through in one sitting. . . . The book is well worth the time, not only for working mothers, but also for any scholar considering a life in academia. * The Chronicle of Higher Education *Don't believe the myths—you can conquer the academy while raising children. It isn't easy, but few worthwhile things in life are. Connelly and Ghodsee show, step by step, how smart women win at work and win at home by protecting their time and focusing on what matters most (hint: it's not grading papers or ironing shirts!). -- Laura Vanderkam, author of 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You ThinkDo read this 'can do' book for mothers who want to pursue an academic career! Yes, you can succeed and this book guides you through every step and pitfall—from choosing the type of institution that is for you to coming up for full professor. It doesn't shy away from the very real obstacles, like exhaustion during the early child-raising years, but offers alternative strategies for climbing the ladder. The sound advice is aimed at mothers—but it could be the handbook for any Ph.D. who is deciding on an academic career. I will recommend it to all my graduate students. -- Mary Ann Mason, professor and co-director of the Center, Economics & Family Security at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law; aRachel Connelly and Kristen Ghodsee have written a book that is not just a must-read for anyone contemplating the intricate and as-yet imperfect balance of academic life and family life, but for anyone at all interested in promoting equity in the workplace and more importantly, in the world of ideas. Professor Mommy lays out in stark detail the dismal record and very real statistics of the “maternal wall,” “glass ceiling” and the steep personal costs that women academics often face. But rather than stop there, they offer detailed, practical and user-friendly guidance on how to set your own priorities, draw boundaries and forge a path through this thorny obstacle course. They show it is not easy, but it is indeed possible to be both a successful academic and a loving parent with a rich family life. More, Professor Mommy is a call to action: that lasting change and that longed-for balance will come only when men become aware of the stacked deck against women and when women academics make the hard decision not to opt out, but to opt in, writing, publishing, thinking, promoting their ideas, and by their very presence, change the calcified system from within. -- Brigid Schulte, Washington Post; Pulitzer Prize co-winnerTable of ContentsContents Introduction: Why We Decided to Write this Book and Who We Are Anyway Chapter 1: A Success Story Told with the Hindsight of 20/20 Vision Chapter 2: The Nefarious Nine or the Not-So-Pretty Truth about Motherhood and Academia Chapter 3: Know Thyself Part I -Deciding to Become an Academic Chapter 4: Know Thyself Part II -Deciding How Many Children to Have and When To Have Them Chapter 5: The Last Year of Graduate School: Heading for the Job Market and Choosing the Institution that is Right for You Chapter 6: On the Tenure Track Part I - Scholarship and Networking Chapter 7: On the Tenure Track Part II - Teaching, Service, and Your Family Chapter 8: The Immediate Post-Tenure Years Chapter 9: Coming up for Full Professor Conclusion Appendix 1: Different Types of Institutions Appendix 2: The Other Perspective: Words from our Children Suggested Reading

Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Sex and Gender in PopRock Music
Book SynopsisFollowing the 1960''s sexual revolution, rock and pop have continued to map the societal understanding of sexuality, feminism, and gender studies. Although scholarship has well established how early rock and roll encouraged and affected issues of sex in the baby boomer generation, this book asks how subsequent pop music has maintained that tradition. The text discusses the gendered performances and biographical experiences of individual musicians, including Patti Smith, Rufus Wainwright, Etta James, and Frank Ocean, and how their invented personae contribute to musical representations of sexuality. It evaluates lyric structure and symbolic language of these artists, and overall emphasizes how pop music, while a commodity art form, reflects the diversity of human sex and gender.Trade Review“This fascinating and compelling book traces how popular music—the world’s most ubiquitous art—reflects and influences far-reaching concepts of sex, gender, and sexuality.” “Dr. Everett is a master stylist: clear, engaging, straightforward, and unfailingly interesting.” * Matthew Schneider, Professor of English, High Point University, USA *Why was such an informative book not published earlier? Everett’s book is essential for researchers and students who are interested in sex, gender and sexuality, and their influences on rock music. It not only gives a handy overview, but also a more detailed analysis of theories and music examples. These analyses do not shy away from problematic content in rock music, such as abuse, rape, misogyny, incest, racial issues, etc., thus providing an important, not solely glorifying, intersectional portrait of the rock era in Western culture. Most original and practical is the long timeline of sexual attitudes and behaviors in recorded popular music until 2022, along with selected songs. * Doris Leibetseder, Senior Research Fellow, University of Vienna, Austria *Walter Everett focuses his encyclopedic knowledge of the popular music of the last 70 years with the scholarship on sex and gender in pop. The result is an impressive compendium, in which every page presents the reader with new juxtapositions in a rich tapestry of examples. The concluding chapter on “Land,” Patti Smith’s “sex-based epic” from Horses, brings Everett’s analysis to an aptly intricate climax. Valuable both as a reference and as an outline of the recent history of sexual mores. * Jennifer Rycenga, Professor of Comparative Religious Studies, San José State University, USA *Everett’s text seamlessly applies theory in various relevant disciplines, such as physiology, psychology, sexololgy, sociology, gender studies, aesthetics, and linguistics, to songwriting of various ages, genres, and styles from the 1920s to the present, ultimately formulating a narrative that takes what we’ve heard with our own ears and explains it in academic context. -- Frank Valish * Under the Radar Magazine *Table of ContentsPreface with Acknowledgments Introduction 1. Pan Macmillan Fathers and Sons
Book SynopsisWas he thinking, do I have to be this kind of boy to survive? Is this what being a boy is?As a boy growing up on the south coast of England, Howard Cunnell's sense of self was dominated by his father's absence. Now, years later, he is a father, and his daughter is becoming his son.Starting with his own childhood in the Sussex beachlands, Howard tells the story of the years of self-destruction that defined his young adulthood and the escape he found in reading and the natural world. Still he felt compelled to destroy the relationships that mattered to him.Saved by love and responsibility, Cunnell charts his journey from anger to compassion, as his daughter Jay realizes he is a boy, and a son. Most of all, this is a story about love - its necessity and fragility, and its unequalled capacity to enable us to be who we are.Deeply thoughtful, searingly honest and exquisitely lyrical, Fathers & Sons is an exploration of fatherhood, masculinity, authenticity and family.Trade ReviewThere is so much aching love in this book, such pain and beauty. Behold, and rejoice -- Tim Winton, author of CloudstreetThis book tells the story of how family is made. It tells it frankly, unexpectedly and in such a way that both family and expectations are rewritten and renewed. I couldn't put it down. Bold, brave, beautiful - much more than biology. This is life itself. -- Jackie Kay, author of Red Dust RoadA miracle of a book: sad, wise, strong and hopeful, its depiction of parenthood will stay with me for a long time -- Sunjeev Sahota, author of The Year of the Runaways Fathers and Sons is a beautiful, moving, and marvellously honest book. I relished its resolutely masculine point of view, especially on such a subject, and the tenderness and sensuality with which Cunnell depicts child-rearing. -- Kate Clanchy, author of Antigona and MeWith Fathers & Sons, Howard Cunnell rips himself apart and reminds us what true artists do with all the mistakes they've ever made. They turn them into art. Dazzling and memorable, here is a strong and moving mosaic depicting the wayward mystery of our souls -- Austin Collings, author of The Myth of Brilliant SummersHoward Cunnell has forged from the most painful of raw materials a modern masterpiece of fiction. . . The lonelieness of a boy who never knew his father, Jason, who in turn became a father to Jay, a boy trapped in the wrong female body. Their journeys are rendered in prose as exquisite as the spaces of sea, sun and freedom Cunnell always chased for salvation and worked so hard to describe, finally finding himself and that redemption in the gift that was denied to him: being a father to a son -- Cathi Unsworth, author of WeirdoCunnell's memoir Father and Sons explores what it is to come from a family, what it is to start one, and what it is to raise one. It explores what we do to each other within that embrace, bad and good, and what we can do better, even while we fail. Cunnell's memoir is cast in light, and water, and bodies. It is a memoir burnished with love and goodwill. It will leave you watching the world differently -- Naomi Wood, author of Mrs. HemingwayA riveting work, remarkable and beautifully written, Fathers & Sons takes you to utterly unexpected places. -- Chris Salewicz, Redemption Song: The Definitive Biography of Joe StrummerJumping with beautiful compression through decades, handsomely written, honest and deeply moving, Cunnell's remarkable memoir is a work of guts, grit, and love. -- Richard House, author of The KillsI admire Cunnell's eye, his precise notation of light and water, whether in Mexico or Brixton, and the emotional commitment of his book. There is a resilience here that is on intimate terms with powerlessness. -- Adam Mars-JonesEssential reading. Agonisingly beautiful and honest. One man's uncompromising testament to love. -- Sarah Winman, author of When God Was A RabbitSpell-binding, life force of a memoir . . . For this book is all kinds of exceptional: an urgent, agonising exploration of fatherhood, masculinity and family; a testament to the power of the written word to reach out to us in dark times; and, above all, a hymn to the "shaping axe" of human love: motherly love, sibling love, erotic love, and ultimately, the transcending love of a father for a child, his in all but biology. And how, fragile as it may sometimes seem, that love can conquer a whole sea of strife. -- Caroline Sanderson * The Bookseller *This spellbinding life force of a memoir... In a little over 200 pages, this book manages to be all kinds of exceptional: an urgent, agonising exploration of fatherhood, masculinity and family and a testament to the power of the written word to reach out to us in dark times. Above all, it is a hymn to the 'shaping axe' of human love: motherly love, sibling love, erotic love and, ultimately, the transcending love of a father for a child, his in all but biology. Fragile as it may sometimes seem, love can conquer a whole sea of strife. * Daily Express *Truly heart-stopping writing: a unique and hard-won perspective unfolded in lucid and unforgettable prose * Financial Times *This tender yet hard-boiled memoir is a searing exploration of parenting and gender-creation…Cunnell deserves the accolades he will receive for his book’s painterly, masculine honesty * Socialist Review *It is one of the most good-hearted, big-souled books I’ve read, a memoir about what it means to be a man, but more importantly what it means to be a parent. I don’t cry easily, but I read the final pages through a luminous wash of tears. -- Alex Preston * Guardian *Dazzlingly beautiful...this is truly heart-stopping writing * Financial Times *Artfully written, a meditation as much as a memoir, the fragments of his life presented with a novelist’s eye for detail and language ... images of brightness, of sun and shadow, make a prism of the book. Narrow ideas of what makes a father, what makes a son, are opened out into a rainbow of possibilities. * New Statesman *A moving account of the unpredictable forms of parenthood and childhood across three generations. -- Rowan Moore, books of the summer * Observer *In a publishing year packed with brilliant writing, nothing stopped my heart quite like Howard Cunnell’s Fathers & Sons. A fragmentary but utterly lucid multigenerational memoir in which the experience of fatherhood and the demands of masculinity are delicately parsed from all possible angles, it stood out for me for the extraordinary quality of Cunnell’s prose: glancing, agile, heartsore, preternaturally perceptive and above all, tender. A unique, and uniquely beautiful, book. -- Melissa Harrison Author of At Hawthorn Time

Quercus Publishing All My Friends Are Invisible: the inspirational
Book Synopsis*A mesmeric, harrowing and ultimately uplifting childhood memoir about identity, family and mental health that has touched so many readers around the world*'So raw and full of so many emotions. I didn't want the book to end' @ftsworld'It's hard to put into words how sacred this book is' @lisainthecity27'I've literally read it in one sitting. Glued to every single word' @lorencoles'Thank you for shining a light on 'different' children. Thank you for showing that there is no normal. But most of all thank you for proving that even when it's hard to make friends...there is always someone looking out for you' @gabrielle.rea It was an ordinary day in 2016. In Gatwick Airport, Jonathan and his wife Anna were having breakfast with their two little children while waiting for their flight to be called. And then it happened, a familiar sensation that Jonathan hadn't had for decades: an out-of-body experience that transported him to another place, the safe place he used to escape to in his mind when he was a boy.Because growing up in conservative 1980s Dublin, where there was little tolerance for children who were 'different', Jonathan Joly was, indeed, a different sort of child: creative, expressive, and - on the inside - a girl. The limitations of the people around him to understand his differences led to years of tyrannical bullying and abuse, forcing him to withdraw within himself to the point of clinical absence. His only chance for survival was the inner world he created for himself, rich with loving and supportive friends and playmates, that only he could see. Jonathan's invisible friends were his lifeline, and on that day at the airport, they came flooding back, and have remained with him to this day. This extraordinary childhood memoir is not only an important, thought-provoking and exhilarating read, it gives hope and community for all those who have ever felt 'other', and proves how vital it is to provide children with the safe space to be themselves. In All My Friends are Invisible, Jonathan Joly, known widely as one of social media's most successful content creators, shares the secret he's kept hidden these many years. He shows the beautiful world he retreated to time and time again when life was unbearable for his 'skin machine'. Most importantly, he introduces us to his invisible friends, and in so doing you may be transported back to the friends you had as a child that no one else could see, and who may have saved you, too.'This will blow you away'- Stylist'Joly's prose is sensitive and heartbreaking...darkly compelling' - Business Post'An extraordinary and thought-provoking memoir' - Belfast TelegraphTrade ReviewAn extraordinary and thought-provoking memoir * Belfast Telegraph *This will blow you away * Stylist *An admirable triumph * Irish Independent *A well-placed and well-structured narrative * Irish Times *An intriguing story of a child's unique response to identity bewilderment, bullying and toxic households * Strong Words *A starkly elegant account by a YouTube star of how an imaginary friend saved him from a hellish Dublin childhood * Sunday Times *Simple and friendly with a definite lack of filters and a good dose of self-revelation * Irish Examiner *Movingly describes how his friends, with the support of a sympathetic school, eventually helped him find a place in the real world * Daily Mail *

PublicAffairs,U.S. Breaking Free: The Lie of Equality and The New
Book SynopsisFor more than a century, women have fought for equality. Yet, time and again, their battles have fallen short. Even so-called constitutionally-protected equal rights can be withdrawn by judges and undermined by legislators. But the greater problem is in the notion of equality itself. In Breaking Free, culture writer Marcie Bianco persuasively argues that the very concept of equality is a fallacy, an illusory goal that cannot address historic forms of discrimination and oppression. Starting with the campaign for women's suffrage and traveling through modern history, she shows us how equality has been designed to keep women and disenfranchised communities chasing an unobtainable goal. Conditioned for generations to want equality, it has become an insidious mindset locking us into the gender binary and reductive identity politics. Bianco calls upon a long-overlooked lineage to argue that only freedom can liberate feminism from these constraints, and proposes three freedom practices for women to reclaim their bodily autonomy and power. What happens if we free ourselves of equality? Controversial and thrilling, Breaking Free guides readers toward new hope for the future of the feminist movement.

Taylor & Francis Inc Sex and the Sacred: Gay Identity and Spiritual
Book SynopsisA down-to-earth look at the spiritual power of sexSex and the Sacred examines the spiritual dimension of human sexuality in a way that is free of religious affiliation but still open to traditional religion and belief in God. Dr. Daniel Helminiak, author of the best-selling What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality, looks at the relationship between sexuality and spirituality, first, from a humanistic perspective and, then, a more familiar Christian point of view. In particular, he encourages LGBTI people to reclaim their spiritual heritage without apology. This unique book emphasizes spiritual commitment as an essential facet of LGBTI/queer consciousness and addresses such burning themes as coming out, the importance of self-acceptance, gay marriage, gay bashing, and the ethics of gay sex. Sex and the Sacred combines a psychological approach to spirituality with common sense and compassion, inspiring a break from moralistic religion and an understanding of what true spirituality means. The book applies this understanding to Christian topics such as the Bible, Fundamentalism, and the future of Christianity, and shows how coming out was an issue for Jesus, how homosexual experience relates to the Christian Trinity, and how Western Civilization became so sex-negative.Sex and the Sacred presents in the end a radical vision of Christianity open to all people. Religious leaders of all denominations, educators, counselors, members of the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community, non-religious spiritual seekers, and anyone interested in the relationship between spirituality and sexuality will find this book enlightening and uplifting. Sex and the Sacred examines: the spiritual drive that is built into human sexuality the standard religious arguments against gay marriage a sustained argument that Biblical Fundamentalism is not Christian spiritual lessons from the AIDS epidemic the right and wrong of sexqueer and otherwise homosexuality in Catholic teaching and practice sexual ethics without religion a vision for a renewed Christianity within a global community Table of Contents The Cover Art: A Gay Spiritual Journey (Heather L. Book SynopsisOne of the Boys: Masculinity, Homophobia, and Modern Manhood takes a fresh look at the formation of modern male sexual identities. You will find that homophobia is not only widespread, but that it takes diverse forms and has far-reaching behavioral and social consequences. The new concept of “homophobic passage,” which is part of the development of all young men, will enlighten you as to the proposed “causes” of homosexuality and heterosexuality. One of the Boys will help you discover how the passage of young males from childhood to adulthood plays an important role in formation of the modern adult male self in gay and straight men. As a result, this knowledge will allow you to offer relevant services to clients who are struggling with societal stereotypes and identity issues. From this informative book, you will discover how homophobia plays a role in the increase in violence experienced by gay men and lesbians in our culture today. To help you offer improved services, One of the Boys discusses why homophobia is widespread, takes diverse forms, and has far-reaching behavioral and social consequences by: examining the school playground and its many effects on children’s peer groups to discover how profoundly names like “crybaby” and “poofter” can impact a child’s development learning that children often cannot escape harmful labels and stereotypes at home and realizing how it impacts a child’s developing sense of self discovering the media’s influence on role models and realizing the important role television and magazines play in providing information about homosexuality and homophobia realizing the heavy pressure homophobia exerts on men and how it shapes their relationships with women and other men, how emotionally close they allow themselves to get to people, how affectionate they are, and with whom they have sexual relations Through One of the Boys, you will gain valuable insight into the masculinity of the men interviewed and how it was shaped in order for you to develop a greater understanding of men and the many influences of society as a whole. This unique study investigates the development of homophobia and the meanings and significances people associate with it to help you understand how and where homophobia originates in our society. Taylor & Francis Inc Barrack Buddies and Soldier Lovers: Dialogues
Book SynopsisAmong all the literature published on gays in the military, Steven Zeeland’s first book remains one of a kind. Barrack Buddies and Soldier Lovers is a raw, unsanitized personal record of conversations the author had with young soldiers and airmen stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. Zeeland’s intimate involvement with these men enabled him to document in honest, visceral terms the day-to-day reality of gay military men’s lives and how they work, play, and, in many instances, how the military actually helped them come out. Ironically, despite the military’s antigay policies, these men found that military service placed them in environments where they had to come to terms with their erotic feelings for other men, and sent them overseas to places where they found greater freedom to explore their sexuality than they could have back home. While a few of Zeeland’s buddies were targeted for discharge, most portray an atmosphere of sexually tense tolerance and reveal a surprising degree of openness with straight co-workers and roommates. The 16 fascinating interviews in Barrack Buddies and Soldier Lovers challenge popular assumptions and stereotypes about gay men in the military and provide significant information on: gay military sexual networks male sexual fluidity in barracks life strategies for survival as a gay or bisexual male in the U.S. military German-American relations attitudes toward the gay banThe casual, conversational structure of Barrack Buddies and Soldier Lovers makes it a richly entertaining read. No other book provides such a warm and intimate portrait of the lives of young gay soldiers and airmen.Visit Steven Zeeland at his home page: http://www.stevenzeeland.com Table of ContentsContents Foreword Introduction Jeff: Sex is Sex Randall: George Bush is Gay John: Here’s How a Faggot Slaps Ryan: Damn Gay, Damn Republican Chaz: Maybe You Were a Wrestler in High School Scott: Making Up Love Doc: Happy but Confused Lieutenant Matt: Speaking in Tongues Lieutenant Doug: How German Is It? Associated University Presses Intersex: A Perilous Difference
Book SynopsisLong a figure of spectacular epic imagination appearing in the central cosmological and philosophical literatures extending as far back as the Hellenic texts, "hermaphrodites" have been made to bear the burden of cultural anxieties regarding sexual difference and the transgression of boundaries separating male from female, men from women, in a strained binary system. As threatening evidence that sex is not the natural basis upon which oppositional gender roles are built, the intersexed are made to disappear into normative categories, thus aligning once again the rightful place of male and female as opposites.

Book SynopsisThis provocative, deeply personal book explores how women experience mental health care differently than men—and lays out how the system must change for women to flourish. Why are so many women feeling anxious, stressed out, and depressed, and why are they not getting the help they need? Over the past decade, mood disorders have skyrocketed among women, who are twice as likely to be diagnosed as men. Yet in a healthcare system steeped in gender bias, women’s complaints are often dismissed, their normal emotions are pathologized, and treatments routinely fail to address the root causes of their distress. Women living at the crossroads of racial, economic, and other identities face additional barriers. How can we pinpoint what’s wrong with women’s mental health, and what needs to change? In All in Her Head, science writer Misty Pratt embarks on a crucial investigation, painting a picture of a system that is failing women on multiple

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Women and Conflict in the Middle East:
Book SynopsisWomen in conflict zones face a wide range of violence from a variety of sources: from physical and psychological trauma to political, economic and social disadvantage. Maria Holt uses her research gathered in the Palestinian refugee camps of Lebanon and in the West Bank to look at the forms and effects of violence suffered by women in the context of the wider conflict around them. After the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, Palestinian refugees fled over the border into Lebanon, and in the wake of tumult in other host states, such as Jordan, many more sought refuge there. Today more than 400,000 Palestinians reside in Lebanon, and the theme of violence is one that informs their daily life. Holt explores these varying forms of violence, including physical personal violence and the violence of war as well as the more symbolic violence of the disintegration of daily life and erasure of homeland, furthermore highlighting ongoing exclusion and isolation Palestinians are subjected to by the Lebanese state. Nevertheless, this condition of being - but not belonging - in Lebanon has influenced refugees' perceptions of themselves. Holt therefore analyses the daily life of Palestinians, recognising the unique community that has emerged in response to exile. In an atmosphere of violence, these refugees find coping mechanisms and appropriate strategies to counter the pressures of conflict. Adherence to religious belief and valued traditional practices, as well as involvement in political and welfare activities and, on occasion, militant activism, are some of the methods employed by women. With its systematic examination of forms of violence as well as an appreciation of daily life in the refugee camps, Women and Conflict in the Middle East makes essential reading for students of the Israel-Palestine conflict as well as those interested in the gender dimension of violence.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction: The Palestine of our Imagination Chapter 2: The Intimate History of Violence Chapter 3: ‘Violated Spaces’: Palestinian Women and the Politics of Place Chapter 4: ‘She Still Has the Key’: The Multiple Violence of Exile Chapter 5: War and ‘Uncivil Violence’ in Lebanon Chapter 6: The Politics of Forgetting Chapter 7: Conclusion: Counter-narratives of Resistance

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Way Out: A History of Homosexuality in Modern
Book SynopsisIn 1957, there were over a thousand men in prison for 'homosexual offences'. A little over half a century later, homosexuality is an active part of the mainstream. Homosexuality has a public profile - on TV, in film and in literature and popular culture. When did today's fairly open discourse on homosexuality begin? Sebastian Buckle argues that homosexuality as a public identity began after the Second World War, on the release of the Wolfenden Report which recommended gay sex be decriminalised, and tells the story of homosexuality in the public eye. Buckle takes us through early images of homosexuality in the 1950s, the founding of the Gay Liberation Front, Section 28 and community radicalism under Margaret Thatcher's government, the AIDs crisis of the 1980s, the expanding musical and cultural influence of gay subcultures and the resulting partial acceptance into the mainstream of queer identities. The result is a complex and nuanced history of gay movements, society and the media, and a fresh look at how the struggle for acceptance and equality has been fought.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements List of Acronyms Preface Introduction Section 1: Gay Liberation Section 2: A Visible Subculture Section 3: Joining the Mainstream Conclusion Notes Bibliography Index

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Sappho
Book SynopsisSappho has been constructed as many things: proto-feminist, lesbian icon and even - by the Victorians - chaste headmistress of a girls' finishing school. Yet ironically, as Page DuBois shows, the historical poet herself remains elusive. We know that Sappho's contemporary Alcaeus described her as 'violet, pure, honey-smiling Sappho'; and that the rhetorician and philosopher Maximus of Tyre saw her, perhaps less enthusiastically, as 'small and dark'. We also know that her 7th/6th century BCE island of Lesbos was riven by tyrannical and aristocratic factionalism and that she was probably exiled to Sicily. Much of the rest is speculative. DuBois suggests that the value of Sappho lies elsewhere: in her remarkable verse, and in the poet's reception - one of the richest of any figure from antiquity. Offering nuanced readings of the poems, written in an archaic Aeolic dialect, DuBois skillfully draws out their sharp images and rhythmic melody. She further discusses the exciting discovery of a new verse fragment in 2004, and the ways in which Sappho influenced Catullus, Horace and Ovid, as well as later writers and painters.

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Becoming an Ally to the Gender-Expansive Child: A
Book SynopsisWhen Anna Bianchi's grandchild asked, "Nanny, you do know I'm a girl, don't you?", Anna recognised this as a pivotal, and daunting, moment in their relationship. She knew that to answer her grandchild, who had been assigned male at birth, her own attitudes, assumptions and beliefs about gender would need to be examined. With reassuring honesty and openness, Anna draws deeply on four areas: her own experience, current research, interviews with children and their families, and a discussion of power, both in society and between children and adults. She shows how the inner journey of the adult inevitably impacts on the outer journey of the child and, given the significance of this, offers a step-by-step guide to becoming an ally to the gender-expansive child. For anyone eager to understand their child's gender experience, or to learn how best to accept, support and protect them, this book will provide knowledge, reassurance and the confidence to do so.Trade ReviewAnna Bianchi, in her empathy and wisdom as a grandmother and a scholar, goes deep and wide, from our insides to the outside world, guiding us on the journey of building a circle of support around our gender creative children, whether they be our grandchild, our own child, or every child. With gender expansive children as our leaders, Bianchi teaches us how to achieve the acceptance, advocacy, and activism that qualify us as allies to the children. A must read. -- Diane Ehrensaft, Ph.D., Director of Mental Health, Child and Adolescent Gender Center and author of 'The Gender Creative Child' and 'Gender Born, Gender Made'When author Bianchi's grandson Ruben was only four years old, his 'clarity about his own gender path was apparent to anyone who knew him.' Bianchi, who identifies as cisgender, writes, 'My fears, my politics, my prejudice, assumptions and attitudes were all exposed, caught up, spun around and scattered by this experience.' She then understood that she needed to 'step down as the all-knowing adult and become an apprentice to life instead.' The heartfelt and open text identifies four keys to becoming an ally to the gender-expansive child: listening, imagination, empathy, and courage. Bianchi walks a graceful path, seamlessly exploring her own experience, that of her grandchild, the politics of society, and the human conditions of fear and love. VERDICT In this powerful offering, the author weaves a combination of biography and parental advice into the important topics of safety, labels, bigotry, and forgiveness. Enthusiastically recommended for growing collections on transgender youth. -- Library Journal starred reviewThis book is a warm and insightful read that I will refer back to again and again as my trans son continues through his transition. -- Peg, mother of a trans boyAs a young trans person who is currently transitioning, I feel that books like this are vital in helping people support and understand those in the trans community. -- NiaThis book should be essential reading for anyone who looks after or works with children and young people. It would also be really useful reading for anyone working or interested in the fields of equality and diversity. Anna's writing style draws the reader in to some very personal stories, anecdotes and acts as a useful how to guide to support children and young people questioning their gender identity. The book challenges the reader to go on a deep dive to explore their own thoughts, feelings and unconscious prejudices. The book is also structured as a workbook to support parents and carers of children and young people guiding them on a journey to being truly inclusive parents. Written at a time of challenging debate around gender identity and the rights of transgender people, I cannot recommend this book enough. -- Berkeley Wilde, Director, The Diversity TrustAs the grandmother of a transgender child, Anna Bianchi provides a much needed perspective on an ally's journey through the Gender Matrix. Guided by her own family's process, and by the love for her grandchild, Bianchi gently coaches others to challenge their own gender assumptions, moving not only through acceptance, but towards an actual social transformation. -- Rachel Pepper, LMFT, author of 'Transitions of the Heart' and 'The Transgender Child'Table of ContentsIntroduction: What is the Gender Matrix? 1. Book SynopsisThis is the story of a long-lasting relationship, surviving against the odds. It is the story of Wenn and Beatrice Lawson, born almost twelve years apart in different countries with different cultures, who were both assigned female at birth. After nineteen years of marriage and four children, Wenn entered a same-sex relationship with Beatrice. Little did Beatrice know that twenty-two years later, Wenn would transition from female to male. This unique and honest memoir tells the story of Wenn's transition and Beatrice's journey alongside him.Co-written by Wenn and Beatrice, who are both on the autism spectrum, this book offers a rare insight into an older couple's experience of transition, with particular emphasis on how Beatrice really felt about the changes. Without holding back, they tell the true story of the conflicts, challenges and growing celebration and joy that can arise from transitioning together as a couple.Trade ReviewBooks by Wenn have always explored the frontiers of autism. This is the love story of Wenn and Beatrice that, through the years, became an exploration of gender and identity. I now see an increasing number of clients who are travelling the same road and this will be their travel guide. -- Tony Attwood, Minds and Hearts Clinic, BrisbaneA wonderful multifaceted account of discovering sexuality, exploring gender identity and living with autism, wrapped up in a beautifully honest and inspiring love story of one couple's journey of overcoming obstacles to find each other, to find themselves and to find a way to move forward together. It is impossible not to feel completely privileged to be able to share in their unique experience of undergoing gender transition as a couple. -- Finlay Games (finntheinfinncible), Transgender advocate and educator, and YouTube host and blogger on gender transition, mental health and recoveryOne of the most overlooked areas of autism research is the complex dance between autism, gender, and sexuality. Wenn Lawson's tender, frank, and beautifully observed account of the evolution of his relationship to himself and his beloved Beatrice deals honestly with the complexities of these issues, while also being a touching and deeply human love story. "There are more forms of gender," Lawson writes, "than stars in the sky." Transitioning Together is a brave and pioneering map of this still-unexplored terrain. -- Steve Silberman, author of 'NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and How to Think Smarter About People Who Think Differently'Transitioning Together is a love story with a twist. Or rather two twists. It is the story of Beatrice and Wenn overcoming personal battles to come together as a lesbian couple in the mid-80s, at a time when such things were very frowned upon; and it is the story of the same couple coping when, decades later, Wenn realises that he is transgender - a trans man. Touching and insightful, as trans comes "out of the closet" this is an increasingly relevant story for our times, as individuals must come to terms with how this, too, impacts upon their relationship. -- Jane Fae, journalist and campaignerTable of ContentsVarious Notes on Sex and Gender. It's a book that every human resources manager is going to want to have handy. -- Christine Burns MBE, Author, E&D Consultant and Transgender ActivistEssential reading for all UK employers. It gives a clear, straightforward, and thorough explanation of trans experience including everything that organisations need in order to create a trans-inclusive workplace. -- Meg-John Barker, Therapist, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the Open University and Co-author of How to Understand Your GenderA necessity for any senior line management or business owner in the SME sector, and a refreshing addition to the literature for corporate personnel and HR departments. Individual experience is brought to bear on important legislation regarding trans rights in public and private sectors as well as academic settings. Fae's chapter on data management is as richly nuanced as those on religion and politics or local and international work issues. The book identifies how individual trans experiences collide with work and IT systems, how trans rights legislation can conflict with staff culture, and helpfully provides guidelines for all involved to create a positive engagement that delivers wider benefits to the organisation as a whole. -- Previn Karian, MD, Resonance Practitioners Ltd and Editor, Critical & Experiential: Dimensions in Gender and Sexual Diversity[The book] has many facts and answers to questions around supporting and understanding potential issues that may face trans employees. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Transition Denied: Confronting the Crisis in
Book SynopsisTrans people in the UK currently face widespread prejudice and discrimination, from how they are described in the media to the lack of healthcare support they receive. This institutional bias is illustrated by the tragic case of Synestra de Courcy, who died following neglect and rejection from the NHS, leading her to sex work to fund her transition and dangerous self-medication. Charting Syn's life from childhood through to her untimely death aged just 23, Jane Fae exposes the gross institutional and societal discrimination trans people experience on a daily basis and its impact on the lives of trans people young and old. Promoting honest discussion and bringing these hidden issues into the light of day, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in trans rights and NHS accountability.Trade ReviewMasterful! Fae dissects an individual tragedy with a combination of compassion and surgical accuracy to shine a harsh light on the scandal of systemic neglect towards vulnerable young trans people. In the process she critiques the wider structural discourse in society that allows and even encourages it. -- Christine Burns MBE, author and retired transgender activistThis is an incredibly important book which weaves together the life-story of an individual let down badly by the existing system and the structural and systemic problems that define the system that processes the trans community and societies notion of dysphoria. What Fae does remarkably and sensitively is to humanise all of us, whilst examining waiting lists, costs and numbers, she honours our beautifully vibrant community, who are, time and time again, let down by a system which often view us with suspicion and mistrust. This is a must read. -- Juno Roche, writer and campaignerBy bringing together different people's perspectives on an individual life story and combining this with contextual information, Fae has produced a book that is educational yet also dynamic and humane. -- Jennie Kermode, Chair of Trans Media Watch and author of 'Transgender Employees in the Workplace'Transition Denied is written by a third party from a grieving mother's point of view trying to make sense of her daughter's transgender journey and her tragic early death. Jessica Kingsley Publishers God, Gender, Sex and Marriage
Book SynopsisAn accessible introduction to important topics that are deeply contested within the Church of England - marriage, gender equality and sexuality. It draws on sources displaying an inclusive perspective whilst staying respectful to those who take a different view.It explores a diverse and fascinating range of questions such as: How should the church treat those who do not conform to gender stereotypes, or experience their gender atypically? Are there limits to inclusion? What should the church say about desire and self-control?Informative and thought-provoking, this book enables the reader to 'think better' about the issues discussed by presenting the history, the religious texts, the forms of reasoning and the recent scholarship which these topics have attracted both inside and outside of theology.Trade ReviewMandy Ford concludes that 'There is more to life than this.' The observer would imagine, however, that the church is obsessed with the issues of gender, sex and marriage. This book and study guide is a valuable contribution to the ongoing conversation that may help Christians to move on. -- Andrew Nunn, Dean of SouthwarkQuestions of human sexuality are central to who we are, and yet resources to help us think carefully and live justly are in very short supply. In this book Mandy Ford offers exactly the sort of calm and clear resource we need. Please read it. -- Paul Bayes, Bishop of LiverpoolA journey through complex and confusing landscape needs a reliable guide. This book provides an accessible, well-informed, detailed and impartial map through the often divisive and highly defended territories that mark out the Church of England's debates on human sexuality. This will be a gift to all who seek to see the paths more clearly. -- Rev David Runcorn is a theological teacher, writer and speakerIn this thoughtful book Mandy invites the reader into the complexity of gender, marriage, desire, sexuality and identity. Rather than provide answers this book encourages curiosity; it is a resource personally and to enable careful conversations with others with whom we might disagree. -- Sandra Cobbin, trainer, coach and mediator, facilitator for the Church of England Shared Conversation on Human Sexuality. The sexuality debate has become sterile in the church. Mandy Ford's God, Gender, Sex and Marriage provides an accessible, never over-simplified, account of the issues that bedevil the Church around gender and sexuality. Ideal for study groups, excellent as a discussion resource between progressives and conservatives, a model for 'good conversation' where 'bad disagreement' is too often what we settle for. -- Canon Simon Butler, Prolocutor of Canterbury (General Synod)This book is a delight. It is lucid, elegant, learned, highly informative, compassionate, and totally free from rhetoric. It is a book written by a very gifted facilitator (I had the privilege of working closely with Mandy as a co-facilitator of the Shared Conversations on Human Sexuality); and a book that is itself a significant gift from her to her readers. She concludes her introduction with the words : "...[this book is] the gift I want to share with you" . I, for one, am very grateful. -- Stephen Ruttle, QCThis is a firework of a book. Book SynopsisAn educational and inspirational book that offers practical guidance for art therapists working with transgender and gender-expansive youth and their families. It provides art therapy goals, recommended treatments and coping skills to use with this client group. Each chapter looks at how art therapy can address a different concern or aspect of the experience, such as transitioning, bullying, and recognizing or building a support system. It includes detailed case studies and cutting-edge art therapy interventions, which help young people to express the emotions surrounding the discovery of gender identity, the transition process, and self-care.Trade ReviewIf you are an art therapist who finds yourself working with a transgender or gender-expansive child or teen and you need a good foundation to support them, this book is for you! Art Therapy with Transgender and Gender-Expansive Children and Teenagers is an excellent introduction to providing affirming therapy from an art therapy lens. Throughout the text, it is clear Shannon Scott-Miller and Kelly Darke are passionate advocates, art therapists, and educators. They break down complex topics into manageable chunks, making it accessible for the art therapist who has not previously worked with transgender or gender-expansive children and teenagers. Scott-Miller and Darke critically look at implicit bias with gender expression and gender identity, giving specific art directives assisting in investigating individual, family and cultural bias in a gentle, yet critically reflexive way. Scott-Miller and Darke provide case studies as examples to aid in the learning process integrating ideas of affirming therapy throughout the book. The developmental stages of gender development and its clinical implications is examined with supporting case studies and references. Gender Dysphoria is highlighted in the text with diverse examples of how art therapy can support treatment. Scott-Miller and Darke look at systems level assessment and support building for the client. Working primarily with transgender clients, I can attest to the importance of assessing for support and the impact of systemic oppression on the mental health of transgender and gender-diverse individuals. Scott-Miller and Darke end the text with critically reflecting on the lack of standards and guidelines within the American Art Therapy Association for working with transgender clients, pushing for more support from the national organization as well as the community to do more research to better support our work with this population. Scott-Miller and Darke lay the foundation that is needed for working with gender-expansive and transgender children and teens in art therapy. Jessica Kingsley Publishers Girls with Autism Becoming Women
Book SynopsisThis insightful book investigates the experiences of seven women with autism as they transition from childhood to adulthood, and how they make sense of that journey.Taken from the autobiographies of women including Liane Holliday-Willey and Temple Grandin, these accounts shine a light on issues unique to women with autism. Heather Stone Wodis provides a detailed and thoughtful exploration of their common experiences, and each story offers a new perspective that illuminates the diagnosis from a different angle. This is a fascinating look at how generational differences, such as access to the internet, can provide more avenues toward self-expression, political mobilization, and advocacy. It also explores the idea that, no matter the era, the unyielding support of family and a diagnosis in childhood can help girls with autism transition toward adulthood.Trade ReviewGirls with Autism Becoming Women helps establish a historical tradition of memoirs and autobiographies by people on the autistic spectrum. All of the texts analyzed by Stone are written with the urgency of survival at stake by those who find themselves entrapped in various systems of neurotypical oppression. This is a helpful guide for teaching texts that can now be used in multi-disciplinary university classrooms and the discussion helps yield an understanding of neuroatypicality as a form of artistic living interdependently with others. Stone brings her background in Psychology, Sociology, and Disability Studies to bear on the importance of these works. -- David T. Mitchell and Sharon L. Snyder, authors of Narrative Prosthesis: Disability and the Dependencies of Discourse and The Biopolitics of Disability: Neoliberalism, Ablenationalism, and Peripheral EmbodimentWodis details how girls on the Autism Spectrum transition from children to adults, recognizing seven women as a strong 'minority within a minority.' Education, careers, sexual development, and social networks paired with qualitative, interpretive research methodology validate fist-person autie-biographies. Her unique approach relies on grounded theory with systematic, constant comparison. Using Rosemarie Garland-Thomson's situated theory, she socially contextualizes ASD from neuroqueer identity to religious constraints. I applaud her support of autism as an equally valid form of neurological embodiment. I highly recommend this book to those interested in the intersection of Autism Spectrum Disorder and female gender issues. -- Telory D.
