Rodale Incorporated Seedtime: On the History, Husbandry, Politics and
Book SynopsisScott Chaskey—working farmer, poet, and spiritual father of the community farming movement—considers "the web of biodiversity and resilience at the heart of our cultural inheritance" by masterfully weaving history, politics, botany, literature, mythology, and memoir into a beautiful and instructive book. It's hard to think of a subject more fundamental to the sustenance of the human race than seeds. Having coevolved with the Earth's plants, insects, and animals, seeds are entwined with the core myths of ancient cultures and the development of human consciousness. Their story remains vitally important today, as the corporations that manufacture GMOs threaten our food security and the future of seed-cultivated agriculture. The stakes, for those concerned with preserving biodiversity and ecological integrity, are high. Balancing a wide view of politics and history, Chaskey alights from life on the farm he has cultivated for 25 years to conjure Gregor Mendel's breeding experiments that yielded our modern understanding of genetics; he also introduces us to several "bioneers," such as the geobotanist Nikolay Vavilov and agriculturalist Cary Fowler, who are preserving global biodiversity through seeds. Integrating scholarship with accessible storytelling, Seedtime is a celebration as well as a call to action urging us to renew our role as citizens of nature, in ecologist Aldo Leopold's phrase, not as conquerors of it.Trade Review“Brilliant book, highly important and beautifully written” —SOUTH SHORE PRESS“The book is a beautiful and poetic exploration of the history, husbandry, and promise of seeds. It is a celebration of the very essence of the cycles of nature...It is a book that you want to hold and read with time so as to savor the depth and richness of the words.” —PRETTY MEDICINE (Maria Bowling)

Melville House Publishing The Future of Gardens
Book SynopsisA bold new look at the changes confronting gardening — including climate change and AI — by acclaimed horticulturalist, TV host, and disabilities activist Mark Lane . . . .Gardening is about choices. Which plants to choose for your soil type and conditions? Where to place them to maximise their growth? What to feed them, and when to water them? And how can all of this be done in a sustainable way? In The Future of Gardens, broadcaster and designer Mark Lane examines present-day considerations alongside those gardeners will need to make in the future. As Earth heats up and populations soar, water will become scarcer on many parts of the planet, and efficient management of it will be key: drought-tolerant planting and smart irrigation systems will likely become commonplace, as will vertical and otherwise space-restricted gardening. And as our world faces stressed or collapsing ecosystems, gardens will be crucial in improving wildlife populations – but only if we let them.Tech will play its part, too. AI-powered apps already provide tips to the green-fingered, but its dominance is a concern. How might we find a happy coexistence? Lane also imagines the potential for gardening in space: what challenges will interstellar travellers face as they cultivate plants on spacecrafts, or even on distant worlds? The Future of Gardens looks at this evergreen discipline with a bold, vibrant and inquisitive eye. Lane’s own vision for inclusivity, sustainable practice and forward-looking design shines throughout this extraordinary addition to the FUTURES series.

The Liffey Press Charles Frederick Ball: From Dublin's Botanic
Book SynopsisWhen Charles Frederick Ball was killed at Gallipoli in 1915 The Irish Times called him ‘one of the best known botanists and horticulturists in Ireland’. Fred Ball (to friends and family) trained in horticulture at Kew Gardens in the UK, moved to Dublin in 1906, became Assistant Keeper at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, and was editor of the journal Irish Gardening. A skilled plant breeder, he could have expected, in time, to succeed Sir Frederick Moore as Keeper of the Botanic Gardens. Instead, he responded to the call to serve king and country, enlisting in the famous 7th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers. This book describes Fred Ball’s life and achievements up to his tragic death at Suvla Bay in September 1915, shedding new light on his contribution to Irish horticulture as well as his time as a soldier. It is also the story of Fred Ball’s relationship with Alice Lane, the youngest daughter of a well to do Anglo-Irish family, who was the love of his life. They were married in Dublin in December 1914, just after Fred had joined up. The author, Alice’s grandson, discovered among his mother’s papers a small metal box containing over 100 letters that Fred wrote to Alice between 1911 and 1914. These letters, combined with further research in libraries and archives in Ireland and England, provide a captivating account of Fred Ball’s life in the Victorian and Edwardian worlds of which he was a part. Richly illustrated with historical photographs, Charles Frederick Ball offers a moving testament to a life tragically cut short. “A fascinating story, beautifully told. And what a wonderful collection of photographs.” – Jeff Kildea, author of Anzacs and Ireland “Excellent ... [a] really valuable reference … It is a sad though exciting story.” – Seamus O’Brien, Head Gardener, National Botanic Gardens, Kilmacurragh
