Book SynopsisDated 1909, A dialogue took place between a man and his Lord, stretching beyond the imaginations of all and superseding the works of man Allama Iqbal raises a series of complaints titled; Shikwa. The East was swept back in total astonishment as the controversy had begun. But little did they know that where there is a complaint surely a response will follow and it sure did. 1913 was the year the Allama Iqbal reclaimed his lost glory with the much awaited responce publication of Jawaab-e-Shikwa. It was claimed a ‘masterpiece’. It would be unjust not to translate it and relay such a unique, classical piece of work of Iqbal’s.

Book Synopsis"Indian Religions: Renaissance and Renewal", the latest collection of "Spalding" papers, celebrates the work of Ninian Smart in bringing together papers by some of the most eminent scholars within this field. The papers are concerned with cultural, religious, political or textual exchange and encounter, and therefore in concepts of rupture, revival, restoration, reformation and reformulation. The title of this book comes directly from Professor Klaus Klostermaier's paper which argues that the real Hindu Renaissance is happening now. However, the title also embraces the contemporary problematic of the study of Indian religions. There cannot ever have been a time when the scholarly study of Indian religions has been under such scrutiny or more politically, culturally and religiously sensitive. The papers in section one urge a major rethinking of academic paradigms. The papers in the second section focus on texts, contexts and ways of understanding. Vastly different in style, period and approach, they nevertheless cumulatively develop sensitivity to textual continuities, to the purposes of commentators, and the contemporary creative reinterpretation of texts and their application to real life. The third section is concerned with cultural and religious encounter and exchange, transformation, restoration, revival, and reformation. The fourth section focuses on the performative, experiential, and expressive. There are papers on the Hindu imagination and imaginary Hinduisms; religion, the media and a multi-modal future; ritual performance and gender; and art and the aesthetic imagination.Table of ContentsPreface by Karel Werner Introduction and Acknowledgements Section 1 Challenging Paradigms Klaus Klostermaier Hinduism- Hindutva-Hindu Dharma Hans Bakker The Hindu Religion and War Ninian Smart and Knut Jacobsen Is Hinduism an Offshoot of Buddhism? Book SynopsisThe word possession is trickier than we often think, especially in the context of the Black Atlantic and its religions and economy. Here possession can refer to spirits, material goods, and, indeed, people. This book features essays by anthropologists in the Americas to explore the nexus found at the heart of the idea of being possessed.Trade Review"Spirited Things is an ambitious and provocative work that casts a brilliant light over one of the more complex and critical issues in anthropology. It brings spirit possession into the heart of anthropological theory, revealing its central place in the 'genealogy of modernity.'" • The Broken World of Sacrifice An Essay in Ancient

The University of Chicago Press The Broken World of Sacrifice An Essay in Ancient

Book SynopsisIn this book, J. C. Heesterman attempts to understand the origins and nature of Vedic sacrificethe complex compound of ritual practices that stood at the center of ancient Indian religion. Paying close attention to anomalous elements within both the Vedic ritual texts, the brahmanas, and the ritual manuals, the srautasutras, Heesterman reconstructs the ideal sacrifice as consisting of four moments: killing, destruction, feasting, and contest. He shows that Vedic sacrifice all but exclusively stressed the offering in the firethe element of destructionat the expense of the other elements. Notably, the contest was radically eliminated. At the same time sacrifice was withdrawn from society to become the sole concern of the individual sacrificer. The ritual turns in on the individual as self-sacrificer who realizes through the internalized knowledge of the ritual the immortal Self. At this point the sacrificial cult of the fire recedes behind doctrine of the atman's transcendence and unit

Book SynopsisThe first book to present a historical overview of the Mormon military experience. Sherman Fleek and Robert Freeman tell the unique story of how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has experienced war and military service and their teachings concerning participation in armed conflict.Trade Review"We overuse the terms unique and overdue, but this study of the Mormon military experience is truly both. Fleek and Freeman bring to the fore a fascinating and intricate history of the often-troubling and always-complicated involvement of Mormonism with the force of arms, from the LDS Church literally operating its own army for many decades in the nineteenth century to becoming an ardent advocate and supporter of the armed forces of the United States in the twentieth. Their work ranges effectively from the stories of individual Mormons in uniform to analyses of the institution’s interface with military affairs, events, and issues."—Gene A. Sessions, coauthor of Camp Floyd and the Mormons: The Utah War"The Mormon Military Experience is a welcome addition to the growing literature on the relationship between religion, the military, and war in the United States. Sherman Fleek and Robert Freeman tell a story, supported by extensive archival research and engaging narrative, of a quintessentially American religious group and its interaction with a quintessentially national institution as it moves from exceptional in the late nineteenth century to mainstream in the twentieth. Historians of the American military, American religion, and of LDS history will all find tremendous value in this volume."—Jacqueline E. Book SynopsisTonghak, or Eastern Learning, was the first major new religion in modern Korean history. Founded in 1860, it combined aspects of a variety of Korean religious traditions. Because of its appeal to the poor and marginalized, it became best known for its prominent role in the largest peasant rebellion in Korean history in 1894, which set the stage for a wider regional conflict, the Sino-Japanese War of 1894â1895. Although the rebellion failed, it caused immense changes in Korean society and played a part in the war that ended in Japan's victory and its eventual rise as an imperial power. It was in this context of social change and an increasingly perilous international situation that Tonghak rebuilt itself, emerging as ChÅndogyo (Teaching of the Heavenly Way) in 1906. During the years before Japanâs annexation of Korea in 1910, ChÅndogyo continued to evolve by engaging with new currents in social and political thought, strengthening its institutions, and using new communication technolo

Book SynopsisThe year-long fact-finding mission of apostle David O. McKay and his traveling companion Hugh J. Cannon to places historian Leonard J. Arrington has called the ""geographic and organisational periphery"" of Mormondom was one of the most significant moments of the twentieth century for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While the contemporary LDS church has grown to become a global presence, the early decades of the last century found missionaries struggling to gain converts abroad. Cannon's rich and vivid account of his and McKay's 61,646-mile around-the-world journey illustrates the roots of Mormonism's globalisation. The account is without doubt one of the more significant texts in the historical cannon of global Mormon studies. Reid L Neilson annotates Cannon's account, enriching the experience for scholarly and lay readers alike. Ancillary material, including the transcripts of Cannon's letters to the Deseret News detailing the journey, the complete text of Cannon's original journals (available for the first time ever), a collection of 60 photographs, maps, and illustrations culled from McKay's own collection, as well as comprehensive lists of names and places, will be available digitally.Trade Review“Anyone interested in David O. McKay must be interested in this journey.”—James B. Allen, Brigham Young University "An exciting history of a remarkable, and somewhat forgotten, journey undertaken at a time when most of the world considered Latter-day Saints to be a solely American institution."—Deseret News "Neilson's careful annotations clarify names, terms, and places along the journey, making the story easy for any reader to follow. Neilson further enriches the McKay-Cannon journey by including a photographic essay consisting of fifty-four images, both photographs and postcards, that visually document the journey."—BYU Studies Quarterly "Neilson's editorial comments are insightful. • Women and Mormonism: Historical and Contemporary

University of Utah Press,U.S. Women and Mormonism: Historical and Contemporary

Book SynopsisHow do women who are members of a church with a predominately patriarchal power structure experience personal agency in formal religious settings, in intimate relationships, publicly, and individually? From Jane Manning James, an African American woman who found empowerment and strength in Mormon ritual despite suffering exclusion based on her race, to contemporary church members who are more likely to prioritize personal revelation than hierarchy, Mormon women have answered this question in a numerous ways. This engaging and seminal volume employs vivid primary documents, candid surveys, and illuminating oral histories to explore the perspectives of Latter-day Saint women. Contributors include lay members and prominent scholars in multiple disciplines, including both LDS and non-LDS viewpoints.Trade Review“Without question, this is the strongest collection of essays and articles on the historical place of Mormon women in many years, if not ever.” —Andrea G. Radke-Moss, author of Bright Epoch: Women and Coeducation in the American West“This work provides a comprehensive contribution to a range of historical and contemporary realities of Mormon women. Issues of race, interracial marriage in Mormonism and the experience of Asian Mormons, of European Mormons, of an African, and of an American Indian give important contributions on these themes. This book will take its place as an essential.” —Rosemary Radford Ruether, author of Goddesses and the Divine Feminine: A Western Religious History

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMormonism in Britain began in the late 1830s with the arrival of American missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Not long afterward, thousands of British converts emigrated to Utah and became a kind of lifeblood for the early Mormon Church. England's North West, where Mormonism had its strongest presence, has become a place of profound significance to the church, yet its early importance to Mormonism has never been fully explored. Matthew Rasmussen's detailed account examines how Mormonism has changed and endured in Britain. After many British believers left for America, church membership in England fell so sharply that the movement in Britain seemed to be on the brink of collapse. Yet British Mormonism gradually rebuilt and continues today. How did this religious minority flourish when so many nineteenth-century revivalist movements did not? Rasmussen explains Mormonism’s inception, perpetuation, and maturation in Britain in a compelling case study of a “new religious movement” with staying power.Trade Review“The finest comprehensive study of the LDS Church in an international setting that I have ever read. Beautifully written, very well organized, and superbly well researched, Rasmussen’s study takes the reader on a journey through three distinct phases of Mormonism in the United Kingdom.” —Richard E. Bennett, author of Mormons on the Missouri—And Should We Die, 1846–1852 “An outstanding LDS history book. I don’t know of any other books like this one. Matthew Rasmussen is a gifted writer.” —Ronald Watt, author of The Mormon Passage of George D. Watt: First British Convert, Scribe for Zion “Mormonism and the Making of a British Zion should rightly act as a standard for other aspiring historians seeking to resurrect Mormonism’s international story.”—Association of Mormon Letters “First, Rasmussen is a gifted writer whose English prose is enviable at least and awe-inspiring at best. As a recipient of a bachelor of arts in English from the University of Utah, he has found his canvas in this book and has utilized his skill as a literary artist. Second, his research methodology is equally inspiring. . . . At every turn, it is clear Rasmussen is bringing to the reader every available resource imaginable to expertly craft his story.”—BYU Studies “Matthew Rasmussen gives us a good read, incorporating named local individuals and events within the wider dynamics of US church strategy. Non-Mormon readers will learn a great deal about the LDS Church at large in and through this cameo of an unusually ‘sacred space.’”—Neal A. • Path to Inner Peace, The: Mastering Karma

Collective Ink Path to Inner Peace, The: Mastering Karma

Book SynopsisThis book presents the fundamental principles of the Jain karma doctrine through a fictional account of the relationship between a guru and his American student. As the story unfolds, the guru instructs the student on how ‘karmic debt’ is incurred as the result of personal action and how this ‘debt’ can be reduced through behavioral choices. With an emphasis on nonviolent action, Jainism elucidates the path whereby karmic attachment is decreased, leading to inner peace. The Path to Inner Peace serves as an in-depth analysis of which actions lead to karmic attachment, how to avoid karmic attachment and what the consequences of karmic attachment are. The issues of free will versus determinism and good versus evil are also dealt with in detail.

Book Synopsis“The contributors to this volume have found the language and concepts by which to interpret Leonard Howell and the origins of the Rastafari movement in the 1930s. This volume is richly documented from the archives, and from interviews, and is informed by multidisciplinary methods, so the reader is treated to an authoritative and comprehensive collection of essays. “Leonard Howell was persecuted over five decades by the British colonial state and by Jamaican governments since independence in 1962. It is in this context that Howell defined the main tenets of the movement, a movement that has now spread globally. All the major themes of his thinking, such as African redemption, the divinity of Haile Selassie, repatriation, and the struggle for freedom and self-reliance are discussed. Howell challenged British colonialism and Jamaican elites in a very different way from the approaches used by the middle-class intelligentsia. He focused, rather, on a new way of seeing God, King and self, thus creating an alternative way of being in the world. Developing Marcus Garvey’s focus on Africa, Leonard Howell and his followers reclaimed their ancestral identity from the dehumanized condition left by British slavery and colonialism. Howell’s communal settlement on ‘Pinnacle’ was an alternative communal space for Rastafari artisans, musicians and peasant farmers.”—Rupert Lewis, Professor Emeritus, Department of Government, University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica
