  • Analysis and Quantum Groups

Springer International Publishing AG Analysis and Quantum Groups

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume presents a completely self-contained introduction to the elaborate theory of locally compact quantum groups, bringing the reader to the frontiers of present-day research. The exposition includes a substantial amount of material on functional analysis and operator algebras, subjects which in themselves have become increasingly important with the advent of quantum information theory. In particular, the rather unfamiliar modular theory of weights plays a crucial role in the theory, due to the presence of ‘Haar integrals’ on locally compact quantum groups, and is thus treated quite extensively The topics covered are developed independently, and each can serve either as a separate course in its own right or as part of a broader course on locally compact quantum groups. The second part of the book covers crossed products of coactions, their relation to subfactors and other types of natural products such as cocycle bicrossed products, quantum doubles and doublecrossed products. Induced corepresentations, Galois objects and deformations of coactions by cocycles are also treated. Each section is followed by a generous supply of exercises. To complete the book, an appendix is provided on topology, measure theory and complex function theory.Table of ContentsPreface.- Set theoretic preliminaries.- Banach spaces.- Bases in Banach spaces.- Operators on Hilbert spaces.- Spectral theory.- States and representations.- Types of von Neumann algebras.- Tensor products.- Unbounded operators.- Tomita-Takesaki theory.- Spectra and type III factors.- Quantum groups and duality.- Special cases.- Classical crossed products.- Crossed products for quantum groups.- Generalized and continuous crossed products.- Basic construction and quantum groups.- Galois objects and cocycle deformations.- Doublecrossed products of quantum groups.- Induction.-Appendix.- Bibliography.- Index.- Exercises.

  • Pseudo-Monotone Operator Theory for Unsteady

Springer International Publishing AG Pseudo-Monotone Operator Theory for Unsteady

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides a comprehensive analysis of the existence of weak solutions of unsteady problems with variable exponents. The central motivation is the weak solvability of the unsteady p(.,.)-Navier–Stokes equations describing the motion of an incompressible electro-rheological fluid. Due to the variable dependence of the power-law index p(.,.) in this system, the classical weak existence analysis based on the pseudo-monotone operator theory in the framework of Bochner–Lebesgue spaces is not applicable. As a substitute for Bochner–Lebesgue spaces, variable Bochner–Lebesgue spaces are introduced and analyzed. In the mathematical framework of this substitute, the theory of pseudo-monotone operators is extended to unsteady problems with variable exponents, leading to the weak solvability of the unsteady p(.,.)-Navier–Stokes equations under general assumptions.Aimed primarily at graduate readers, the book develops the material step-by-step, starting with the basics of PDE theory and non-linear functional analysis. The concise introductions at the beginning of each chapter, together with illustrative examples, graphics, detailed derivations of all results and a short summary of the functional analytic prerequisites, will ease newcomers into the subject.Table of Contents- 1. Book SynopsisThe purpose of this monograph is to provide a systematic account of the theory of noncommutative integration in semi-finite von Neumann algebras. It is designed to serve as an introductory graduate level text as well as a basic reference for more established mathematicians with interests in the continually expanding areas of noncommutative analysis and probability. Its origins lie in two apparently distinct areas of mathematical analysis: the theory of operator ideals going back to von Neumann and Schatten and the general theory of rearrangement invariant Banach lattices of measurable functions which has its roots in many areas of classical analysis related to the well-known Lp-spaces. A principal aim, therefore, is to present a general theory which contains each of these motivating areas as special cases.Table of Contents- 1. A Review of Relevant Operator Theory. - 2. Measurable Operators. - 3. Singular Value Functions. - 4. Symmetric Spaces of τ-Measurable Operators. - 5. Strongly Symmetric Spaces of τ-Measurable Operators. - 6. Examples. - 7. Interpolation.

  • Functional Analysis and Operator Theory

Springer International Publishing AG Functional Analysis and Operator Theory

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book contains a collection of more than 800 problems from all main chapters of functional analysis, with theoretical background and solutions. It is mostly intended for undergraduate students who are starting to study the course of functional analysis. The book will also be useful for graduate and post- graduate students and researchers who wish to refresh their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the subject, as well as for teachers of functional analysis and related disciplines. It can be used for independent study as well. It is assumed that the reader has mastered standard courses of calculus and measure theory and has basic knowledge of linear algebra, analytic geometry, and differential equations. This collection of problems can help students of different levels of training and different areas of specialization to learn how to solve problems in functional analysis. Each chapter of the book has similar structure and consists of the following sections: Theoretical Background, Examples of Problems with Solutions, and Problems to Solve. The book contains theoretical preliminaries to ensure that the reader understands the statements of problems and is able to successfully solve them. Then examples of typical problems with detailed solutions are included, and this is relevant not only for those students who have significant difficulties in studying this subject, but also for other students who due to various circumstances ?could be deprived of communication with a teacher. There are problems for independent solving, and the corresponding selection of problems reflects all the main plot lines that relate to a given topic. The number of problems is sufficient both for a teacher to give practical lessons, to set homework, to prepare tasks for various forms of control, and for those students who want to study the discipline more deeply. Problems of a computational nature are provided with answers, while theoretical problems, the solutions ofwhich require non-trivial ideas or new techniques, are provided with detailed hints or solutions to introduce the reader to the corresponding ideas or techniques.

  • Functional Analysis Methods for Reliability

Birkhauser Verlag AG Functional Analysis Methods for Reliability

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe main goal of this book is to introduce readers to functional analysis methods, in particular, time dependent analysis, for reliability models. Understanding the concept of reliability is of key importance – schedule delays, inconvenience, customer dissatisfaction, and loss of prestige and even weakening of national security are common examples of results that are caused by unreliability of systems and individuals. The book begins with an introduction to C0-semigroup theory. Then, after a brief history of reliability theory, methods that study the well-posedness, the asymptotic behaviors of solutions and reliability indices for varied reliability models are presented. Finally, further research problems are explored.Functional Analysis Methods for Reliability Models is an excellent reference for graduate students and researchers in operations research, applied mathematics and systems engineering.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews:“The main goal of this monograph is to introduce the reader to methods of linear functional analysis useful for studying contemporary reliability models. … The book will be definitely of interest for specialists in queuing theory, in mathematical modelling of complex manufacturing systems and for all interested in applications of semigroups methods to integro-differential equations. The volume can be read by anyone with a basic knowledge of probability theory and linear functional analysis.” (Mikhail Yu. Kokurin, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1223, 2011)“This book focuses on mathematical methodologies for reliability theory, with emphasis on theory and methods of functional analysis for stochastic models in reliability. … this monograph provides a detailed study of some Markov processes describing an integrated manufacturing system. • Invariant Distances and Metrics in Complex Analysis

De Gruyter Invariant Distances and Metrics in Complex Analysis

Book SynopsisAs in the field of "Invariant Distances and Metrics in Complex Analysis" there was and is a continuous progress this is now the second extended edition of the corresponding monograph. This comprehensive book is about the study of invariant pseudodistances (non-negative functions on pairs of points) and pseudometrics (non-negative functions on the tangent bundle) in several complex variables. It is an overview over a highly active research area at the borderline between complex analysis, functional analysis and differential geometry. New chapters are covering the Wu, Bergman and several other metrics. The book considers only domains in Cn and assumes a basic knowledge of several complex variables. It is a valuable reference work for the expert but is also accessible to readers who are knowledgeable about several complex variables. Each chapter starts with a brief summary of its contents and continues with a short introduction. It ends with an "Exercises" and a "List of problems" section that gathers all the problems from the chapter. The authors have been highly successful in giving a rigorous but readable account of the main lines of development in this area.

  • Springer International Publishing AG Counting with Symmetric Functions

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis monograph provides a self-contained introduction to symmetric functions and their use in enumerative combinatorics. It is the first book to explore many of the methods and results that the authors present. Numerous exercises are included throughout, along with full solutions, to illustrate concepts and also highlight many interesting mathematical ideas. The text begins by introducing fundamental combinatorial objects such as permutations and integer partitions, as well as generating functions. Symmetric functions are considered in the next chapter, with a unique emphasis on the combinatorics of the transition matrices between bases of symmetric functions. Chapter 3 uses this introductory material to describe how to find an assortment of generating functions for permutation statistics, and then these techniques are extended to find generating functions for a variety of objects in Chapter 4. The next two chapters present the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm and a method for proving Pólya’s enumeration theorem using symmetric functions. Chapters 7 and 8 are more specialized than the preceding ones, covering consecutive pattern matches in permutations, words, cycles, and alternating permutations and introducing the reciprocity method as a way to define ring homomorphisms with desirable properties.Counting with Symmetric Functions will appeal to graduate students and researchers in mathematics or related subjects who are interested in counting methods, generating functions, or symmetric functions. The unique approach taken and results and exercises explored by the authors make it an important contribution to the mathematical literature.Trade Review“This book provides a current survey of techniques and applications of symmetric functions to enumeration theory, with emphasis on the combinatorics of the transition matrices between bases. … Each chapter ends with a substantial number of exercises along with full solutions, as well as accurate bibliographic notes. The book is definitely a very interesting addition to the literature on the subject.” (Domenico Senato, Mathematical Reviews, February, 2017)“Though the authors target graduate students, advanced undergraduates will also surely have the necessary prerequisites, easily grasp the book's goals, and find many chapters accessible. … Summing Up: Recommended. Book SynopsisThis book is suited for a first course on Functional Analysis at the masters level. Efforts have been made to illustrate the use of various results via examples taken from differential equations and the calculus of variations, either through brief sections or through exercises. So, this book will be particularly useful for students who aspire to a research career in the applications of mathematics.Special emphasis has been given to the treatment of weak topologies and their applications to notions like reflexivity, separability and uniform convexity. The chapter on Lebesgue spaces includes a section devoted to the simplest examples of Sobolev spaces. The chapter on compact operators includes the spectral theory of compact self-adjoint operators on a Hilbert space. Each chapter concludes with a large selection of exercises of varying degrees of difficulty. They often provide examples or counter-examples to illustrate the optimality of the hypotheses of various theorems proved in the text, or develop simple versions of theories not developed therein. In this (second) edition, the book has been completely overhauled, without altering its original structure. Proofs of many results have been rewritten for greater clarity of exposition. Many examples have been added to make the text more user-friendly. Several new exercises have been added.

Book SynopsisThe book is a graduate text on unbounded self-adjoint operators on Hilbert space and their spectral theory with the emphasis on applications in mathematical physics (especially, Schrödinger operators) and analysis (Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians, Sturm-Liouville operators, Hamburger moment problem) . Among others, a number of advanced special topics are treated on a text book level accompanied by numerous illustrating examples and exercises. The main themes of the book are the following: - Spectral integrals and spectral decompositions of self-adjoint and normal operators - Perturbations of self-adjointness and of spectra of self-adjoint operators - Forms and operators - Self-adjoint extension theory :boundary triplets, Krein-Birman-Vishik theory of positive self-adjoint extensionTrade ReviewFrom the reviews:“The book is devoted to the exposition of the theory of unbounded operators in the Hilbert space. … book starts with a standard introduction to the theory of closed and closable operators, with an explanation of the important difference between self-adjoint and symmetric operators. … Among the advantages of the book is the inclusion of a nice and voluminous selection of exercises. … the book can be used for teaching a graduate course in spectral theory to students in analysis and to physicists … .” (G. V. Rozenblum, Mathematical Reviews, January, 2013)“I recommend the book as a reference for readers interested in the general theory of unbounded self-adjoint operators in Hilbert space. It is a valuable reference for numerous topics, including closed and adjoint operators, the general spectral theorem for self-adjoint operators, groups and semigroups of operators, semibounded and sectorial forms and their associated operators, and self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators. … A special feature of the book is the inclusion of numerous examples based on multiplication operators and first and second order differential operators.” (Anton Zettl, SIAM Review, Vol. 55 (3), 2013)“The book can be used for teaching a graduate course in spectral theory to students and is also suitable for self-study. The book consists of six parts, each of which is subdivided into several chapters, each chapter ending with a section containing exercises. … The book concludes with appendices devoted to basic topics in analysis and the theory of bounded operators.” (Michael Perelmuter, Zentralblatt MATH, Vol. 1257, 2013)Table of ContentsI Basics onClosed Operators.- 1 Closed Operators and Adjoint Operators.- 2 Spectrum of Closed Operators.- 3 Some Classes of Unbounded Operators.- II Spectral Theory.- 4 Spectral Measures and Spectral Integrals.- 5 Spectral Decomposition of Selfadjoint and Normal Operators.- III Special Topics.- 6 One-Parameter Groups and Semigroups of Operators.- 7 Miscellaneous.- IV Petirbations of Selfadjointness and of Spectra of Selfadjoint Operators.- 8 Perturbations of Selfadjoint Operators.- 9 Trace Class Perturbations of Spectra of Selfadjoint Operators.- V Forms and Operators.- 10 Semibounded Forms and Selfadjoint Operators.- 11 Sectorial Forms and m-Sectorial Operators.- 12 Discrete Spectrum of Selfadjoint Operators.- VI Selfadjoint Extention Theory of Symmetric Operators.- 13 Selfajoint Extensions: Cayley Transform and Krein Transform.- 14 Selfadjoint Extensions: Boundary Triplets.- 15 Sturm-Liouville Operators.- One-Dimensional Moment Problem.

Book SynopsisThis book is a volume of the Springer Briefs in Mathematical Physics and serves as an introductory textbook on the theory of Macdonald polynomials. It is based on a series of online lectures given by the author at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, in February and March 2021. Macdonald polynomials are a class of symmetric orthogonal polynomials in many variables. They include important classes of special functions such as Schur functions and Hall–Littlewood polynomials and play important roles in various fields of mathematics and mathematical physics. After an overview of Schur functions, the author introduces Macdonald polynomials (of type A, in the GLn version) as eigenfunctions of a q-difference operator, called the Macdonald–Ruijsenaars operator, in the ring of symmetric polynomials. Starting from this definition, various remarkable properties of Macdonald polynomials are explained, such as orthogonality, evaluation formulas, and self-duality, with emphasis on the roles of commuting q-difference operators. The author also explains how Macdonald polynomials are formulated in the framework of affine Hecke algebras and q-Dunkl operators.Table of ContentsOverview of Macdonald polynomials.- Preliminaries on symmetric functions.- Schur functions.- Macdonald polynomials: Definition and examples.- Orthogonality and higher order q-difference operators.- Self-duality, Pieri formula and Cauchy formulas.- Littlewood–Richardson coefficients and branching coefficients.- Affine Hecke algebra and q-Dunkl operators (overview).

Book SynopsisThis book introduces the dilation theory of operators on Hilbert spaces and its relationship to complex geometry. Classical as well as very modern topics are covered in the book. On the one hand, it introduces the reader to the characteristic function, a classical object used by Sz.-Nagy and Foias and still a topic of current research. On the other hand, it describes the dilation theory of the symmetrized bidisc which has been developed mostly in the present century and is a very active topic of research. It also describes an abstract theory of dilation in the setting of set theory. This was developed very recently.A good portion of the book discusses various geometrical objects like the bidisc, the Euclidean unit ball, and the symmetrized bidisc. It shows the similarities and differences between the dilation theory in these domains. While completely positive maps play a big role in the dilation theory of the Euclidean unit ball, this is not so in the symmetrized bidisc for example. There, the central role is played by an operator equation. Targeted to graduate students and researchers, the book introduces the reader to different techniques applicable in different domains.Table of ContentsDilation for One Operator.- C*-Algebras and Completely Positive Maps.- Dilation Theory in Two Variables - The Bidisc.- Dilation Theory in Several Variables - the Euclidean Ball.- The Euclidean Ball - The Drury Arveson Space.- Dilation Theory in Several Variables - The Symmetrized Bidisc.- An Abstract Dilation Theory.

Book SynopsisThis concise text is intended as an introductory course in measure and integration. It covers essentials of the subject, providing ample motivation for new concepts and theorems in the form of discussion and remarks, and with many worked-out examples. The novelty of  Measure and Integration: A First Course is in its style of exposition of the standard material in a student-friendly manner. New concepts are introduced progressively from less abstract to more abstract so that the subject is felt on solid footing. The book starts with a review of Riemann integration as a motivation for the necessity of introducing the concepts of measure and integration in a general setting. Then the text slowly evolves from the concept of an outer measure of subsets of the set of real line to the concept of Lebesgue measurable sets and Lebesgue measure, and then to the concept of a measure, measurable function, and integration in a more general setting.
