Book SynopsisThrough this ancient Persian story of a prickly-bush digger and his daughter who discover magical stones that bring wealth and disaster, this tale explores the different ways to nourish and care for the soul. As an invitation to the dimensions of love power and divine sustenance, MOSHKEL GOSHA''s magical story shows how to value and protect a deep longing for inner truth in the contemporary age. Crossed Crow Books Sun God Moon Maiden

Book SynopsisThe Holy Grail is many things to many people. The medieval troubadour saw it as a vision of heaven. In the twenty-first century, the quantum physicist finds heaven in parallel universes. The shaman, who links prehistory with the modern world, travels in other dimensions knowing he will experience the parameters of existence. In SUN GOD AND MOON MAIDEN, Gordon Strong suggests that the presence of the Grail questions not only space and time but perception itself. The philosophy of Plato, the psychology of Jung and the nobility of kings are within the Grail''s domain. It resides in the endless galaxy of the mind. This interior landscape is where we discover yet more gateways into Inner Space, realms where we may come to know the universe, and ourselves. From Atlantis to Arthur''s Camelot, the path to Avalon still awaits. As Gordon Strong demonstrates in this fascinating book - encompassing mythology, magic and modern physics - the ancient wisdom of the Qabalah, the Tarot and Sacred Stone

Ghost House Books Ghost Stories of the Civil War

Book SynopsisMore than 600,000 men died during the Civil War, but the conflict also displaced countless civilians. In this collection, noted authors Dan Asfar and Edrick Thay recount fascinating stories of soldiers, statesmen and star-crossed lovers, both ordinary and extraordinary, whose lingering spirits serve as a testament to America''s most devastating war: * Eyewitnesses spot the ghosts of Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis and Edgar Allan Poe at Fort Monroe, one of the few Union forts in the Confederate South. * In New Orleans, the spirits of General Pierre Beauregard and his fallen soldiers continue to fight the tragic Battle of Shiloh. * An anti-slavery crusader haunts Harpers Ferry, where he staged a munitions raid and was hanged before the war broke out. * ''''Old Green Eyes,'''' the disembodied head of a fallen soldier, terrifies visitors to Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in Georgia. * In the cemetery of a former Ohio war prison, a battalion of Confederate dead rise from their anonymous graves. * An entire chapter explores the many specters of Gettysburg, the war''s most infamous battlefield. * For anyone interested in the paranormal, Ghost Stories of the Civil War will prove a chilling and unforgettable treat.

  • Association pour l'Avancement des Etudes Iraniennes Mythes, Croyances Populaires Et Symbolique

    Out of stock

This volume contains the text of the five Ehsan and Latifeh Yarshater Distinguished Lectures on Iranian Studies, organized by the Unite Mixte de Recherche 7528 "Mondes iranien et indien", and delivered in 2010 at the College de France in Paris. The series of lectures brings together numerous data illustrating the confluence of mythological, folkloric and literary themes of Iranian culture, and their continuity from pre-Islamic till present times. This interaction between the classical and popular, oral and written traditions, still little investigated, is being examined on the examples of five motifs: Kakil, the hero of a winter festival; a spell against scorpions; the rose and the nightingale; a symbolical dream of the wise king Xusro Anosirvan; and the eschatological saviour and his horse. The study is conducted in a diachronic perspective, and its sources range from the Avesta and Pahlavi texts through the Sahname and classical Persian literature, up to modern Persian novel and research on popular customs and beliefs.

JCB Mohr (Paul Siebeck) Enki und Ninmaḫ: Eine mythische Erzählung in

    7 in stock

    4 in stock

  • Bearskin Quiver: A Collection of Southwestern

Daimon Verlag Bearskin Quiver: A Collection of Southwestern

Book SynopsisOnce upon a time, an Apache story tells us, the trickster called Coyote killed a bear so that he could make a suitable quiver for his magical arrows. You shouldn''t have done that, someone warned Coyote. That skin will only bring you bad luck. And so it has been for Coyote ever since, chased by bears and humans alike. In this charming collection of folktales from long ago, we read of the creation of the world, of the ways of animals, of the beguiling Coyote, of the world in which we live and other worlds that hide just beyond our sight. Drawn from the oral literatures of some twenty South-western American Indian peoples, these stories teach us about the constants of those dry places: about how the clouds form in the sky, how the heat rises from the ground, how the animals move about from one shady spot to another, and how the people once lived their lives. All these stories show us -- as the great anthropologist, Claude Lévi-Strauss, observed -- that folktales are not mere afterthoughts of literature, just pleasant stories to tell around the campfire, but rather valuable tools for reflection upon our own lives.

  • North Wind & the Sun: and Other Fables of Aesop

Daimon Verlag North Wind & the Sun: and Other Fables of Aesop

Book SynopsisFor 2,500 years, adults and children alike have been listening to the stories of Aesop. Originating in the folk wisdom of rural Asia Minor, these popular fables have been retold, repurposed, and altered over the centuries; in the process, they have sometimes been changed so much that they bear little resemblance to their simple forebears, which ask their listeners and readers to think for themselves, to supply their own conclusions. In this collection, Gregory McNamee draws on the Greek originals to provide Aesop''s fables in a form that Aesop himself might recognise -- ones in which fleas and foxes converse, people sometimes learn from their errors, and things are not always what they seem.

  • NIAS Press Folk Tales of the Maldives

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Maldives are mainly known as an equatorial tourist paradise to the south of India but some will know the archipelago risks drowning owing to global warming. Far less is known about the people, who have occupied these islands for millennia but whose deep indigenous culture is today under threat from a multitude of external forces. This volume is a collection of 80 traditional short stories and legends selected from the large corpus of stories in the local oral tradition, and translated and illustrated by the author who is the foremost authority on the language and anthropology of the Maldives. These folk tales offer keen insights both into the history, culture and beliefs of the people of the Maldives and into the world they live in.The close relationship the Maldivians have with their environment is clear, likewise the syncretic nature of their Islamic faith, the tales bustling with spirits, sorcerers and monsters as well as local people, seabirds, etc. Would-be travellers to the Maldives will find this a unique insight into the real country behind the tourist brochures. For scholars, the folk tales and analytical material offer a wonderful literary/folklore resource as well as fresh perspectives on the effects of globalization.

  • NIAS Press Oral Literature, Gender, and Precedence in East

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisDecades of war, social upheaval and political change have not lessened the enduring interest of the people of East Timor (Timor-Leste) in their oral traditions, something they share with their neighbors in the eastern islands of Indonesia. Although oral literature continues to occupy a central place in Timorese cultures, new forms of expression are emerging (for instance via published fiction and in social media). Nonetheless, the corpus of Timorese oral narrative largely retains an underlying metaphysical unity. Among others, it continues to express indigenous notions about gender and precedence - two important sociocultural markers that are among the most prominent topics currently under discussion by scholars of the region today. What has yet to be done, however, is to bring Timorese oral narratives into mainstream social science scholarship by subjecting them to a rigorous scholarly analysis. That is the purpose of this masterly study by the veteran Timor scholar, David Hicks. Drawing upon more than a half century of fieldwork and publishing, he discusses the tropes found in and illuminating Timorese metaphysical thought and literature. No other work has discussed these tropes before nor indeed attempted to discern patterns of thought in Timorese narratives. Certainly, the study will be of interest to scholars of literature, social science, structural analysis, Indonesian cultures and philosophy, as well as to those interested in the country's colonial past and in efforts to conserve its natural environment. The book should also appeal to educated citizens of Timor-Leste; here is a work illuminating how future aspirations might be grounded in a common heritage.
