    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFilms and Dreams considers the essential link between films and the world of dreams. To discuss dream theory in the context of film studies means moving from the original, clinical context within which dream theory was originally developed to an environment established by primarily aesthetic concerns. Botz-Bornstein deals with dreams as ''self-sufficient'' phenomena that are interesting not because of their contents but because of the ''dreamtense'' through which they deploy their being. A diverse selection of films are examined in this light: Tarkovsky''s anti-realism exploring the domain of the improbable between symbolization, representation and alienation; Sokurov''s subversive attacks on the modern image ideology; Arthur Schnitzler''s shifting of the familiar to the uncanny and Kubrick''s avoidance of this structural model in Eyes Wide Shut; and Wong Kar-Wai''s dreamlike panorama of parodied capitalism.Trade Review[Botz-Bornstein] displays a masterful degree of familiarity and understanding, not only of the concept in question but also of the concept's historical relativity....Film and Dreams contains a great deal of vital argument, which for formalist and psychoanalytic scholars of film should provide a great deal of impetus for much needed discussion. * Screening The Past, June 2008 *Botz-Bornstein's books display a superior capacity to engage—with rigour, application and insightfulness—in research projects dedicated to customarily neglected philosophical topics. In an English-speaking academic world dominated by over-specialization and institutionalized narrow-mindedness, Thorsten Botz-Bornstein's Films and Dreams brings a breath of fresh air. * Parallax Magazine, June 2009 *Table of ContentsChapter 1 Introduction: Dreamtense and the Art of Film Chapter 2 Chapter 1. Book SynopsisWhilst Al Pacino''s astonishing performaces have established him as one of the greatest actors of our time, Andrew Yule reveals that he has spent most of his life at war with himself. A traumatic childhood, years of grinding poverty and an inability to sustain relationships with, amongst others, Jill Calyburgh, Tuesday Weld and Diane Keaton have lead to a turbulent, unstable private life - a life nearly destroyed by an apparently hopeless alcohol addiction.International success after The Godfather only served to intensify the crushing personal pressures on Pacino, and he has since had to live with some of the worst career moves in the history of Hollywood. Combining intensive research with extraordinarily frank interviews with Pacino''s closest friends and associates, Andrew Yule strips away the wall of secrecy behind which the reclusive star has hidden and paints a startlingly intimate portrait of a truly remarkable personality.

Book SynopsisNow in Paperback! Ronald Neame''s autobiography takes its title from one of his best-loved films, The Horse''s Mouth (1958), starring Alec Guinness. In an informative and entertaining style, Neame discusses the making of that film, along with several others, including In Which We Serve, Blithe Spirit, Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, Tunes of Glory, I Could Go on Singing, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Scrooge, The Poseidon Adventure, and Hopscotch. Straight from the Horse''s Mouth provides a fascinating, first-hand account of a unique filmmaker, who began his career as assistant cameraman on Hitchcock''s first talkie, Blackmail, and went on to direct Maggie Smith, Judy Garland, Walter Matthau, and many other prominent performers. The book includes tales of the on-and-off-the-set antics of comedian George Formby, and original accounts of his experiences working with Noel Coward and David Lean. This is not simply an autobiography, but rather a history of British cinema from the 1Trade ReviewRonald Neame's life story reads like a veritable Who's Who of the movie business. * The Director's Guild Of America *The name Ronald Neame should be a household word...A virtual who's-who history of the film business, here and in England, since the beginning of sound films...it's a book that deserves a read by anyone interested in the endlessly fascinating process of filmmaking, especially those who, like Neame, pursue their passion with class, style and wit. * The Hollywood Reporter *Both amusing and informative...Cinematographers will delight in the many colorful stories Neame relates about filmmaking in this engaging autobiography, and it's required reading for anyone interested in the history of British film. * American Cinematographer *Yours is an extraordinary life, and I found the book enthralling. It encompasses so much of our film history, and for you to have mastered three great film crafts, to have worked with Hitch, Coward, Lean, Guinness, Powell, and Pressburger, even Garland and Formby, and to have been responsible for such magnificent films as The Horse's Mouth, Tunes of Glory, and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie places you firmly in the pantheon of great British filmmakers. -- George Perry * London Times *a charming memoir. -- Kenneth Turan * Los Angeles Times *Any career that spans across eight decades is quite an achievement, particularly a career that's been so consistently distinguished and adventurous, a career of such passionate pursuits. More than a career, really—a Life. * Martin Scorsese *You'll enjoy his book. * The Veteran *Given that Neame collaborated with the likes of David Lean and Noel Coward, he recalls some impressive anecdotes, the choicest of which can be found in his consistently engrossing autobiography. Told in a gentlemanly style, the book provides a valuable first hand record of what it was like to work in the British Film industry in the Thirties and Forties. As for Neame's experiences in Hollywood, they're the icing on the already delicious cake. * Film Review, (Uk) *Intriguing...I couldn't put it down and read it all in one sitting, as David Lean, who features very heavily would have said 'A bloody good read.' * British Society of Cinematographers Newsletter *Long-overdue, revealing, and extremely readable * Academy *An inside story, not about one man, but about the entire fascinating industry in which he worked. * British Heritage *An invaluable history of British cinema from the 1920s through the 1960s. * Culturevulture.Net *Table of ContentsPart 1 Foreword Part 2 Foreword Part 3 Introduction Chapter 4 1 Miss World Chapter 5 2 Blackmail Chapter 6 3 Beryl Chapter 7 4 The Elstree Fire Chapter 8 5 Quota Quickies Chapter 9 6 Major Barbara Chapter 10 7 Noël Coward Chapter 11 8 Cineguild Chapter 12 9 Hollywood Chapter 13 10 Expectations Chapter 14 11 The Academy Chapter 15 12 Take My Life Chapter 16 13 Passionate Friends Chapter 17 14 Crashing On Regardless Chapter 18 15 The Magic Box Chapter 19 16 The Card Chapter 20 17 The Million Pound Note Chapter 21 18 The Man Who Never Was Chapter 22 19 Windom's Way Chapter 23 20 Alec Guinness Chapter 24 21 Tunes of Glory Chapter 25 22 Judy Garland Chapter 26 23 Ron Pon Chapter 27 24 Mister Moses Chapter 28 25 Gambit Chapter 29 26 The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Chapter 30 27 Scrooge Chapter 31 28 The Poseidon Adventure Chapter 32 29 Losses and Gains Chapter 33 30 Walter Matthau Chapter 34 31 Donna Part 35 Appendix A: The Films of Ronald Neame Part 36 Appendix B: Awards and Honors Part 37 Acknowledgments Part 38 Index

Book SynopsisFilm lovers all over the world are familiar with the masterpieces of Eisenstein and Tarkovsky. These directors'' unique achievements were embedded in a powerful process that began under Russia''s last tsar and underwent several periods of blossoming: the bourgeois cinema in the 1910s, the revolutionary avant-garde in the 1920s, the Thaw in the 1950s, and the awakening of national cinemas in the 1960s and 1970s. The A to Z of Russian and Soviet Cinema is the first reference work of its kind in the English language devoted entirely to the cinema of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and the post-Soviet period, including both the cinematic highlights and the mainstream. The cinemas of the former Soviet republics, including Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, Lithuania, and Latvia, are also represented with their most influential artists. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewMorricone is a distinguished Italian film composer with more than 400 scores to his credit, including The Untouchables, Fistful of Dollars, and Ripley's Game. Miceli is a musicologist. Their book–a series of insightful/inspiring lectures on the uses/aesthetics of cinema scores–constitutes a short course in the rigors of film music composition. The authors mix examples and caveats to young composers, saying that a course cannot teach film composition. Attention to synesthesia--partnering of sounds and colors–is a necessity, and irrational choices should be eschewed ('the most inadmissible thing is to resort to asynchronism or incoherent juxtapositions'). Discussion of the process–consultations, directors, viewings, style, and premix/final mix–are intercut with 'seminars' about solving specific problems; the authors use experimental film edits to stimulate youthful composers' imaginations. Morricone argues for strict attention to the psychological dimensions of the film's characters; he provides examples from Hitchcock (Morricone's metacinematician), Ridley Scott, and the Traviani brothers. Morricone's observations include the ideas that mediated scenes (in which music carries character reactions) are essential and that 'tone color is one of a film composer's most important means of expression.' Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty/professionals. * CHOICE *

Book SynopsisBefore his name became synonymous with a new style of comedy; before he had written, directed, or produced his first movie or TV show; before he and his roommate Adam Sandler were performing stand up at dive bars in LA; before all that, Judd Apatow was a kid in Syosset, Long Island who was utterly obsessed with comedy. At 16, he started hosting a radio show for his local high school station, and he would call up the biggest comics of the day - comics like Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, Steve Allen, Sandra Bernhard; none of whom, by the way, had any idea they were talking to a kid in his parents'' garage -- and talk to them about what got them into comedy, and what made them stay in. Thirty years later, Apatow is still that comedy nerd, and still interviewing comics about what drives them and why they do what they do. That obsession has made him one of the most recognizable and influential comedic filmmakers working today. This book is a collection of 30 years worth of conversations -- always funny, often poignant, and incredibly intimate -- that not only span Apatow''s career, but his adult life. Featuring interviews with luminaries like Mel Brooks and Chris Rock and modern icons like Louis CK and Amy Schumer, this is a book for fans of comedy, from the nerdiest fan of all--

Book SynopsisJoanne Bernardi offers a study of Japanese cinema's ""pure film movement"" era, recovering a body of lost film and establishing its significance in the development of Japanese cinema. Building on a wealth of original-language sources she examines how the movement challenged the industry.Trade ReviewIt is surely one of the greatest tragedies in the history of world cinema that virtually no Japanese films from the pre-World War I period survive and that almost nothing from the 1920s exists in anything like its original form. Laboring under this unfillable gap. Joanne Bernardi has done as much as anyone can to bring to life this crucial and fascinating era of Japanese cinema. Relying on a wealth of primary and secondary original-language sources in a manner unprecedented in the published literature on early Japanese cinema in English, she has impressively exhausted the written record to re-create these tragically lost films and what they meant for the development of the Japanese cinema. With this impressively and thoroughly researched volume, Bernardi instantly joins the ranks of Joseph L. Anderson and Hiroshi Komatsu as the foremost scholars of the Japanese silent cinema.
