Book Synopsis''The problem with The Problem with Men is that I do believe men will have less trouble with it than the title suggests as it is actually a glorious, funny book written by a glorious funny man'' AISLING BEA ''Very moving, one of the few things I''ve consumed in 2020 that has left me with a sense of hope... but one thing wasn''t made clear, when is International Men''s Day?'' JOHN ROBINSFor the past decade, Richard Herring has been answering sexist trolls on International Women''s Day when they ask ''when is International Men''s Day?'' in the mistaken belief there isn''t one. If only the trolls had learned to use Google they would realise that there is an International Men''s Day - it''s on November 19th. In The Problem with Men Richard expands on his Twitter discussions and tackles some of the big questions surrounding the problems of toxic masculinity - for women, but also for men - including: - Should men fear feminism? - Is society sexist against men? - Could you win a point against Serena Williams? *spoiler* The answer to all of these is no. With Richard''s signature humour and insight, The Problem with Men is a book for anyone striving for an equal society, all year round.''This is a great book but I think the last thing it needs is a quote by yet another man'' JAMES ACASTERTrade ReviewRich, you're a brilliant comedian and this is a great book but I think the last thing it needs is a quote by yet another man * James Acaster *The problem with The Problem with Men is that I do believe men will have less trouble with it than the title suggests as it is actually a glorious, funny book written by a glorious funny man * Aisling Bea *Very moving, one of the few things I've consumed in 2020 that has left me with a sense of hope... but one thing wasn't made clear, when is International Men's Day? * John Robins *I loved it. One of the reasons I loved it is because it's not very long and I read it quite quickly. It's very funny, as you'd expect. It's funny, even if you are a slightly defensive and thin-skinned male man, I think you'd enjoy this - it's not designed to wind anyone up, but to help you relax * Adam Buxton *

If you’re watching Pickup on South Street you’ll find out what its director, Sam Fuller, actually drank off-screen. Didn’t know that Nightmare Alley’s Joan Blondell inspired a cocktail? It may become a new favorite. Meanwhile, Rita Hayworth is toasted with a 'Sailor Beware,' an original concoction which, like the film that inspired it (The Lady From Shanghai), is unique, complex, and packs a wallop. Featuring dozens of movie stills, poster art, behind-the-scenes imagery, and stunning cocktail photography, Noir Bar is both a stylish and exciting excursion through classic cinema’s most popular genre.

Book SynopsisShe concludes with a provocative analysis of Forrest Gump, identifying the popular film as a retelling of post-World War II Southern history.Trade ReviewA resourceful, imaginative, sure-handed analysis by an author who knows both how movies and television get made and how to get at what those products mean. -- Thomas Cripps Journal of Southern History This text would be an excellent place for readers who have very little background in film or media history to begin delving into the ongoing discussion of how much reality drives media and how much media drives reality. -- Dana L. Hettich Southern Historian The best book I have found that discusses popular cinema and the American South... Graham's is a groundbreaking study that locates both blacks and whites in post-World War II cultural history. Her scholarly monograph contributes significantly to historical and film studies... Graham's book is lively, aesthetically informed, and teeming with insightful observations about a variety of topics: white women in race-conscious films; the 'anarchic physicality' of the redneck; the centrality of the 'cracker' to our understanding of American racism; the southern delinquent as social activist; the corrupt southern lawman and the redemptive southern lawyer. -- Sharon Monteith Scope Provides a perfect critical lens through which to appreciate what lies behind all the representations of the South flashing across the screen... In this meticulously researched and accessibly written book, [Allison Graham] covers such issues as the eugenics movement and class politics, white women's sexuality, the star personae of Elvis and Andy Griffith, and the political power of Southern populists. Her methodology is part of what makes the book so readable: it's interdisciplinary but not jargon-laden, drawing on the most exciting recent academic studies in cinema, culture, class, history, sociology, whiteness, gender, sexuality, and politics. The close readings in the book are never so detailed that they become tedious, but even for readers unfamiliar with the primary sources, Graham's analysis is persuasive and fascinating to read. There is no way to adequately summarize all the ingenious bits of reading pleasure in this book. -- Julia Leyda Bright Lights Film Journal Provides detailed analysis of interactions among race, gender, and, crucially, class, often neglected in cultural studies. It draws upon an enormous range of evidence. Seemingly unlikely material such as 1950s films on teenage delinquency is convincingly woven into the analysis... Not least, the book is leavened with humor in a way that makes the argument more compelling... This book provides new insights, showing how varied and subtle is the encoding of major events and struggles. The argument is complex yet accessible, making it an invaluable teaching aid. It is a major contribution to scholarship on racism and the civil rights movement in America. -- John A. Silk Journal of American History Probing, provocative, lively... Graham's often original readings and entertaining renderings [of films and television shows]... chart the tangled route whereby race becomes subsumed by class and then rediscovered. She reaches widely in her literary, film, and television references, which she juxtaposes with civil rights events to suggest how the former 'framed' the latter but also how film and television fiction sometimes offered a competing narrative as to race and civil rights... Graham has written a book very much worth reading. It is at once entertaining and instructive, and it makes 'real' the reel South as no other book to date. -- Randall M. Miller American Historical Review In a series of interlocking essays, Graham deftly explores the ways Hollywood filmmakers and television producers tried to reformulate stock southern characters in light of rapidly changing social relations... A fascinating and compelling cultural history that should be of use to a wide array of scholars. -- Patrick D. Jones American Studies Perceptive... A sophisticated analysis of films produced during the civil rights era... Readers who wish to understand the ways popular media buttress conservative assessments of race in American life will do well to digest Graham's helpful volume. -- Andrew M. Manis Georgia Historical Quarterly She restores to our field of view media texts of real complexity that have been overlooked by previous analyses... An often poetic and crisply edited long essay. -- Kevin Jack Hagopian Journal of Communication 2005Table of ContentsContents: List of Illustrations Acknowledgments Introduction: Remapping DogpatchChapter 1 "The Purest of God's Creatures": White Women, Blood Pollution, and Southern Sexuality Chapter 2 Sentimental Educations: Romance, Race, and White Redemption Chapter 3 Natural Acts: Hillbillies, Delinquents, and the Disappearing Psyche Chapter 4 Reeducating the Southerner: Elvis, Rednecks, and Hollywood's "White Negro" Chapter 5 Civil Rights Films and the New Red Menace: The Legacy of the 1960sNotes Essay on Sources Index

  • Better Left Unsaid

Stanford University Press Better Left Unsaid

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBetter Left Unsaid is in the unseemly position of defending censorship from the central allegations that are traditionally leveled against it. Taking two genres generally presumed to have been stymied by the censor''s knifethe Victorian novel and classical Hollywood filmthis book reveals the varied ways in which censorship, for all its blustery self-righteousness, can actually be good for sex, politics, feminism, and art. As much as Victorianism is equated with such cultural impulses as repression and prudery, few scholars have explored the Victorian novel as a censored commoditythanks, in large part, to the indirectness and intangibility of England''s literary censorship process. This indirection stands in sharp contrast to the explicit, detailed formality of Hollywood''s infamous Production Code of 1930. In comparing these two versions of censorship, Nora Gilbert explores the paradoxical effects of prohibitive practices. Rather than being ruined by censorship, VictorTrade Review"Gilbert makes her case persuasively and elegantly. To use a term central to her discussion, her sophisticated analysis not only draws on a range of theoretical contexts and discourses, but offers much of value to readers from a range of disciplines and backgrounds, from film and cultural studies to law. Most valuably, Gilbert challenges us to rethink censorship as an artistic method that (as Woolf says of Austen) 'stimulates us to supply what is not there'. Arguments against censorship tend to treat provocation or offensiveness as the price we pay for freedom of expression; yet as Gilbert shows, complete freedom of artistic expression may also lead to banality or a peculiarly literal-minded discourse. To leave things unsaid is to stimulate further discussion and questioning, something Gilbert adeptly achieves here." -- Christopher Pittard * New Books on Literature 19 *"Rarely has a book of film scholarship so directly challenged conventional interpretations . . . Gilbert makes a powerful contribution by showing how censorship and creativity coexisted—and at times, though certainly not always, reinforced each other. She has written one of the gutsiest recent books in film history, and one that cannot be ignored." -- Clayton Koppes * Cineaste *"It's a fascinating premise that Gilbert presents with insightful scholarship, some sharply startlng insights and a lucid, engaging writing style. Indeed, hers is that rare scholarly book that's also quite entertaining to read." -- Dennis King * The Oklahoman (NewsOK) *"Gilbert's book discusses the censorship and restraint to which Victorian novels and American films from the 1930s through the 1950s were subject . . . The book is extensively researched and written in a graceful style . . . Recommended." -- T. Hoagwood * CHOICE *"An engaging, consistently shrewd, and bracingly irreverent study of how the Victorian novel and classical Hollywood film devised ingenious and morally productive strategies to evade the constraints intended to control them." -- Maria DiBattista * Princeton University *"Gilbert's book is a work of many charms and considerable significance, demonstrating a sure understanding of the productive side of censorship, and providing a persuasive demonstration that Victorian novels and Hollywood films belong in the same conversation." -- Ned Schantz * McGill University *"Turning the tables on inherited notions of oppression and freedom, Nora Gilbert shows how writers and filmmakers worked within frames of control that in their collusion the market economy and public opinion had drawn around them. Through her meticulous comparisons of Victorian novels and Hays Code Hollywood, Gilbert studies visual and verbal slippage, inference, irony and, no less, the pleasure of perversion. Informative and a delight to read, Better Left Unsaid sparkles with wit and invention." -- Tom Conley * Harvard University *
