Book Synopsis Do contemporary big-budget blockbuster films like Gravity move something in us that is fundamentally the same as what avant-garde and experimental films have done for more than a century? In a powerful challenge to mainstream film theory, Cinema’s Bodily Illusions demonstrates that this is the case. Scott C. Richmond bridges genres and periods by focusing, most palpably, on cinema’s power to evoke illusions: feeling like you’re flying through space, experiencing 3D without glasses, or even hallucinating. He argues that cinema is, first and foremost, a technology to modulate perception. He presents a theory of cinema as a proprioceptive technology: cinema becomes art by modulating viewers’ embodied sense of space. It works primarily not at the level of the intellect but at the level of the body. Richmond develops his theory through examples of direct perceptual illusion in cinema: hallucinatory flicker phenomena in Tony Conrad&rTrade Review "In laying out his theory of proprioceptive aesthetics in cinema, Cinema’s Bodily Illusions makes a boldly provocative contribution to the study of bodies, film screens, and media technology. Rescuing cinematic illusion from the perjorative sense with which modernist film scholarship disparages it, Scott C. Richmond finds a visceral (rather than cerebral) thematization of the resonance between ordinary perception and cinematic perception."—Jennifer M. Barker, author of The Tactile Eye: Touch and the Cinematic Experience "Richmond’s theory and method offers an important tool for doing some of the critical work that spectator theory cannot. Cinema’s Bodily Illusions may become an influential vein within postmodern phenomenology. It offers a critical method for understanding the aesthetic moment outside of representational blinders."—PopMatters Table of ContentsContents Introduction. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewThis delicious account of the greatly talented and productive Kramer and Heeley's adventures, misadventures, headaches, and thrills among their illustriously famous subjects is a joy to read. The quirks and maddening eccentricities of such greatly gifted giants as Frank Sinatra, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, et al., are all here on delightfully entertaining and often startling display. In the Company of Legends is so hard to put down I ate with one hand while reading it. -- Dick CavettA treasure trove of untold stories, culled from more than thirty years of candid conversations and unguarded moments with America's brightest stars and most powerful politicians. In the Company of Legends serves up one startling revelation after another. -- John Berendt, author of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil"Katharine Hepburn, Paul Newman, and former MCA/Universal Studios Chairman, Lew Wasserman, to name just a few, were known for fiercely protecting their privacy, trusting very few, especially those in media. Joan Kramer and David Heeley not only succeeded in working with them, but also developed long-term personal relationships with these and many other Hollywood legends, which is rare, almost unheard of. Over the years, they've shared fascinating and behind-the-scenes stories about so many icons they were lucky enough to know. I'm certain that the readers of this book will enjoy the many peeks behind the curtain their book reveals. -- Blair Westlake, Former Chairman of Universal Studios Television and Corporate Vice President, Media & Entertainment for Microsoft CorporationJoan Kramer and David Heeley have produced definitive documentary portraits of many of Hollywood's biggest stars. Although I have been involved in the movie business for many decades, I found these behind-the-scenes stories of movie legends enthralling and revelatory. In the Company of Legends is a must-read for those who thought there was nothing new to discover about Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Jane Fonda, and the many other well-known personalities who fill the pages of this book. -- Roger L. Mayer, Former President Turner Entertainment Co., Recipient of Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Academy Award, and long-time Executive of Metro-Goldwyn-MayerThank you, David Heeley and Joan Kramer for giving us one of the best reasons ever for curling up with a book. After their treating us to some of the best, most literate and entertaining hours of television (includingKatharine Hepburn: All About Me, Bacall onBogart, The John Garfield Story, The Adventures of Errol Flynn and numerous other TV specials) they now offer us a book I never wanted to end, chock-full of constant surprises. In the Company of Legends is a king's ransom of fascinating stories about colorful, bigger than life people we know but don't know. The big bonus is that it's a book about dazzling personalities told by people who actually knew the celebrities they write about, worked with them and, further, socialized with them, aware of the their foibles and strengths from first-hand knowledge, not heresay. That's something both rare and refreshing in books today. This one deserves a high spot on your "must read" booklist for the year. -- Robert Osborne, host of "Turner Classic Movies"I've been involved in many of Joan's and David's projects over the years and they've told me fascinating stories about the many celebrities they've worked with, shedding new light on people I thought I knew. Now they are sharing these stories publicly for the first time. Anyone who goes to the movies, the theater, and watches television will treasure this book as much as I do. -- Joanne Woodward

Book SynopsisA revised and expanded version of this popular book on film-making locations in New YorkTrade Review“By the early 1970s, New York’s reign as a television and filmmaking capital seemed to be over. What a difference a few decades make. In Scenes From the City, James Sanders masterfully revises and expands his original book...In his chronological, lavishly illustrated backstage tour, Mr. Sanders, an architect and filmmaker himself, details how assiduously Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and his predecessors wooed Hollywood...and reaped... an intangible reward: the 'power to convert the daily reality of the city into a magical transcendent realm.'" –The New York Times“…this book captures stories and images of one of the world’s most filmed and most cinematic cities – New York. The locale is presented in all its iconic glory through landmark location films, beginning from the forties to the present. Rare and unusual photographs are accompanied by the commentary of actors, directors and other filmmakers. This film history is a great reminder of the force of landscape as a character in the history of cinema.” –Malibu Times"From the cinema verite of the 1960s to softer fare, New York has provided some of film's most famous moments. 'Scenes' captures the current work of directors as diverse as Martin Scorcese and Spike Lee." -Publishers Weekly

Book SynopsisDescribing in detail one of the most inventive periods in the history of English cinema, the volumes in this celebrated series are already established as classics in their field. Each volume details the highlights of a single cinematic year, including details of production, manufacturers of equipment, dealers and exhibitors. Trade Review ‘The legacy of John Barnes to the study of early cinema can hardly be overestimated.’ ‘The Beginnings of Cinema in England is a monumental work and an essential reference guide. Its availability as a paperback is especially welcome to (graduate) students as the five volumes are very complete in situating the birth of cinema within its historical context.’ (Gert Jan Harkema, Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television, September 2015) '. . . Essential reading . . . A labour of love that will intrigue any cineaste.' (Film Quarterly) 'Film studies for years to come will be indebted to him for having immeasurably enriched the literature on his subject.' (Quarterly Review of Film Studies) 'Perhaps it is a symptom of this change that the Barnes brothers have now found a publisher in the form of the University of Exeter Press, who have not only brought out this latest volume in style, but have re-issued volumes 2 to 4 in a uniform binding (with a promise of a totally revised volume 1 in 1998). Perhaps, at last, the British academic and archival establishments are coming to appreciate the fascination of the early cinema, a fascination that John and William Barnes have felt for over 60 years.' (Film History, Vol. 10, No. 1, 1998) 'This remarkable set of books should be in every university library in the country, and on the shelves of every film historian.' (Viewfinder, No. 32, February 1998) 'Beginnings of the Cinema in England belongs beside such founding works as Rachael Low's History of the British Film and Denis Gifford's British Film Catalogue. • Women Who Kill

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Women Who Kill

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisWomen Who Kill explores several lines of inquiry: the female murderer as a figure that destabilizes order; the tension between criminal and victim; the relationship between crime and expression (or the lack thereof); and the paradox whereby a crime can be both an act of destruction and a creative assertion of agency. In doing so, the contributors assess the influence of feminist, queer and gender studies on mainstream television and cinema, notably in the genres (film noir, horror, melodrama) that have received the most critical attention from this perspective. They also analyse the politics of representation by considering these works of fiction in their contexts and addressing some of the ambiguities raised by postfeminism. The book is structured in three parts: Neo-femmes Fatales; Action Babes and Monstrous Women. Films and series examined include White Men Are Cracking Up (1994); Hit & Miss (2012); Gone Girl (2014); Terminator (1984); The WalkinTable of ContentsSeries Editor's Introduction, Angela Smith and Claire Nally Introduction, Cristelle Maury and David Roche Part I Neo-Femmes Fatales Chapter 1 The Femme Fatale of the 1990s Erotic Thriller: A Post-feminist Killer?, Delphine Letort Chapter 2 The African Femme Fatale: Re-Appropriation of a Mythical Figure in White Men Are Cracking Up (Ngozi Onwurah, 1994), Emilie Herbert Chapter 3 Transwoman Who Kills: Hit & Miss (Sky Atlantic, 2012), Isabelle Schmitt-Pitiot Chapter 4 Genre and Gender in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez, 2014), Christophe Gelly Chapter 5 Textbook Femme Fatale, De-eroticised Neo-noir Heroine or Post-Feminist Woman Who Kills? Book SynopsisSearching For New Frontiers offers film students and general readers a survey of popular movies of the 1960s. The author explores the most important modes of filmmaking in times that were at once hopeful, exhilarating, and daunting. The text combines discussion of American social and political history and Hollywood industry changes with analysis of some of the era's most expressive movies. The book covers significant genres and evolving thematic trends, highlighting a variety of movies that confronted the era's major social issues. It notes the stylistic confluence and exchanges between three forms: the traditional studio movie based on the combination of stars and genres, low-budget exploitation movies, and the international art cinema. As the author reveals, this complex period of American filmmaking was neither random nor the product of unique talents working in a vacuum. The filmmakers met head-on with an evolving American social conscience to create a Hollywood ciTable of ContentsAcknowledgments vii Introduction: Changing Times 1 Part I Postwar Hollywood and a Changing America 13 1 Hollywood, Hitchcock, and the Postwar Era 15 “The Vital Center” … Cannot Hold 17 Postwar Film Production and Exhibition 21 New Looks at Mothers, Genres, and Style 26 2 Domestic Relations, 1953–1967: Bachelor Pads, Nervous Dads, and Marriages on the Rocks 39 Bachelor Pads 41 Nervous Dads (and Moms) 58 Marriages on the Rocks 66 Welcoming The Graduate 71 3 Negotiating the Civil Rights Movement: Message Movies, To Kill a Mockingbird, and the Rise of Sidney Poitier 83 It’s a Sin 85 An American Story 94 Poitier, ’67 99 Part II The New Hollywood, Vietnam, and the Schism 111 Weekend 113 4 Art Cinema and Counter]Culture: Dr. Strangelove, A Hard Day’s Night, Blow Up, Bonnie and Clyde, and General Ripper Exceeds His Authority 118 Meet the Beatles (and the New European Cinema) 125 Quiet Enigma in Swinging London 129 “We Rob Banks” 137 Coda: “Battleship Potemkin Calling the Searchers” 146 5 Nowhere to Run: One-Eyed Jacks, The Man who Shot Liberty Valance, A Fistful of Dollars, and The Wild Bunch 153 The Frontier Myth and the Classical Western 155 California – or Maybe Oregon 158 “Who Was Tom Doniphon?” 162 No Name, Sudden Impact 169 “Those Days Are Closing Fast” 175 Destroying and Saving the Village 181 6 The War: From The Longest Day to The Green Berets 191 “The Good War” Refought and Rethought 192 Unconventional Warfare 201 Art of War 208 The Only War We’ve Got 211 7 Far Out:2001: A Space Odyssey and Easy Rider 225 Beyond the Infinite 226 Marketing and Reception 237 From Hell’s Angels to Easy Riders 239 They Blew It, But … 248 Afterword 259 Bibliography 265 Index 275

Book SynopsisDetails the profound historical appeal of films, video, and digital works emphasizing synchronized musicality and gestureTrade Review“James Tobias’s groundbreaking book offers erudite and thoughtful conversations on sound theory, music computation, and theories of spectatorship. Sync cobbles together a discontinuous history of musicality in the hands of cinematic practitioners from Sergei Eisenstein’s rhythmic montage, through Steina Vasulka’s feminist eco-ethics, to John Cameron Mitchell’s performative aesthetics. What emerges is a sonic genealogy building on fragments of counter-traditions. A deeply passionate work, Sync is an outstanding contribution to the fields of cinema studies and sound theory”—Bhaskar Sarkar, Associate Professor, Film and Media Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara, and author of Mourning the Nation: Indian Cinema in the Wake of Partition"Sync offers a much needed and thoroughly radical revision of debates around synchronization, opening up a range of different audiovisual modalities to political analysis, and breaking the stranglehold that existing forms of political discourse have had on discussions of sound–image relations. The author's key move has been to employ the notion of synch (sic) to address not only the relationships between sound and image in audiovisual media but also those between text and audience, focusing primarily on the experience of reception....[T]he approach adopted by Tobias is highly original.... [T]here is much to recommend this book which, in providing new perspectives on the political dimensions of audiovisuality, repays the close attention it demands." —ScreenTable of ContentsList of IllustrationsAcknowledgments1 Ciphers of Hieroglyphic Time2 Eisenstein's Gesture: Breaking Down Alexander Nevsky3 For Love of Music: Oskar Fischinger's Modal, Musical Diagram4 Hanns Eisler's Dialectical Stream: Sync, Dissonance, and the Devil5 Black Relationship: Improvising a Black Pacific6 Melos, Telos, and Me: Transpositions of Identity in the Rock Musical7 Stylistics of Hieroglyphic TimeNotesIndex
