Book SynopsisAs Nick and Nora Charles in the six Thin Man movies from 1934 to 1947, the husband-and-wife team of William Powell and Myrna Loy showed that marriage didn't have to mean the end of the romantic comedy. From the comedic delight that was the initial The Thin Man through its five sequels as well as eight other films (including the Oscar-winning The Great Ziegfeld and Manhattan Melodrama), Powell and Loy were cemented in the public imagination as Hollywood's happiest married couple. In Becoming Nick and Nora, comedy writer and Hollywood historian Rob Kozlowski follows the winding path that Powell and Loy's screen personas took over their careers. Studios originally cultivated the two as villains in the silent era: Powell as a mustachioed, swashbuckling fiend and Loy as an exotic adversary. With the rise of talkies, the two managed to broaden their range beyond villainous stereotypes, but it took several false starts before they achieved their lasting legacy as Nick and Nora. Packe

  • Cambridge University Press Fantasy of Modernity

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisRomantic love overwhelms 1950s Bombay cinema. Love and romance is evident in the themes, lyrics and visual aesthetics of films of the period, as it is in the publicity and gossip surrounding films and film stars. Love in cinema becomes significant when social reality constrains its quotidian experience and expression. By bringing a spectacular imagination of love to centre stage, the 1950s cinema deflected anxieties of ''Indianness'' even as the new aesthetic and affect of romance offered an alternative engagement with the contradictions of modernity. Fantasy of Modernity: Romantic Love in Bombay Cinema of the 1950s explores the films, the songs, the stars and the extra-cinematic discourse of the period to read love and romance as its most productive trope that mobilized a dynamic and contested public sphere.Trade Review'This is a page-turner and a breath of fresh air. Written lucidly and clearly, well aware of contemporary debates in Indian and global film studies, which it both summarizes and takes forward, [this book] offers a new take on a much written area of film history, the popular Bombay cinema of the 1950s. While film studies have been preoccupied with the construction of the nation in cinema in this period, Wani suggests that this cinema was also simultaneously helping construct a modern sensibility premised on freedom, one built upon ideas of romance and erotic desire, not exactly congruent with the construction of a bourgeois and patriarchal nationhood. The insights she offers are so logical that one is struck at how we missed them so far.' Jyotsna Kapur, Southern Illinois University'This is an original, rich and beautifully written account of Bombay cinema's preoccupation with romantic love, which draws on a wide range of archives, including little-known Marathi sources, as well as the author's encyclopaedic knowledge of the cinema of that era. This ambitious project brings genuinely new insights to our understandings of how romantic love - as the sign of the modern - was imagined and given shape in 1950s Bombay films, their songs and star texts. A pleasure to read.' Rosie Thomas, University of Westminster'The originality of this delightfully written book lies in its focus on the relatively neglected 1950s as a pivotal moment in the evolution of Indian popular cinema, bridging the political event of Independence, and the technological innovation of colour cinematography. Identifying the theme of romantic love as the signature of modernity, the author cuts across conventional film genres to explore this conjunction in the three domains of 'urbanity'; of film songs; and through the phenomenon of stardom. It is rare to find a work that succeeds in stitching these separate discourses so elegantly together.' Patricia Uberoi, Institute of Economic GrowthTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. City of love; 2. Book SynopsisThe American West, as we know it, is defined by the movies, and the Western is the oldest film genre. When the movies were born, it was not that long after Promontory Point and the Civil War, so those memories were still there in the minds of the very first movie audiences as they watched The Great Train Robbery. And the myth-making is as important as the brutal truths of history. As the reporter tells Jimmy Stewart in Fords The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend. Rendered in rare, evocative tones reminiscent of Edward Sheriff Curtiss immortal photographs, Western Portraits of Great Character Actors provides readers with a collection of stylised portraits that capture the allure and mystique of the Old West, complete with authentic costuming, weaponry and settings. From the epic feature film to the TV series and serial, this coffee table book will put the story of character actors and the significance of their memorable roles into an entertaining perspective. The subjects include such popular, recognizable actors as Karl Malden, David Carradine, Denver Pyle, R G Armstrong, L Q Jones, Horst Buchholz, Henry Silva, Ruta Lee, Morgan Woodward, Bo Hopkins, Clu Gulager and 72 others.

Book SynopsisOver the past fifty years, a unique hybrid genre of nonfiction cinema called the avant-doc has emerged in the world of independent film. Combining the unconventional techniques of avant-garde auteurs like Stan Brakhage with the verisimilitude of traditional documentaries, the avant-doc expands the way cinema captures and chronicles events. Drawing on firsthand interviews with nineteen of the form''s chief practitioners and participants, Avant-Doc constructs an oral history that provides the first insider''s perspective on the phenomenon.Trade ReviewA compelling achievement, Avant-Doc diagrams a new fluid geography of cinema, where traditional categories such as experimental,"documentary," and "fiction" dissolve. The insightful, probing conversations assembled so deftly here vaporize fixed cinematic modes. These filmmakers describe cinema as a living organism, pulsating in networks of politics, arts, philosophies, teachers, literature, communities, technologies, and aesthetics. * Patricia R. Zimmermann, author of States of Emergency: Documentaries, Wars, Democracy *Scott MacDonald's groundbreaking and seminal new volume, Avant-Doc, illuminates correspondences between avant-garde cinema and documentary through a series of compelling interviews with major independent filmmakers and noted scholar Annette Michelson. This intimate and probing follow-up to MacDonald's Critical Cinema series creates a lively and deeply personal oral history. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Frontier Club is Christine Bold''s name for the network of eastern aristocrats who created the western as we now most commonly know it. At the turn of the twentieth century, they yoked this most popular formula to their own elite causes-from big-game hunting to conservation, immigration restriction to Jim Crow segregation-and aligned themselves with cattle kings and quality publishers. This book tells the story of that cultural sleight-of-hand. It delves into institutional archives and personal papers to excavate the hidden social, political, and financial interests in the making of the modern western. It re-reads frontier club fiction in relation to the federal policies and cultural spaces (from exclusive gentlemen''s clubs to national parks to zoos) with which it was intimately connected; the centerpiece is Owen Wister''s bestselling novel The Virginian. It casts new light on nine key clubmen, both the famous and the forgotten-in addition to Wister, the network included Theodore Roosevelt, George Bird Grinnell, Silas Weir Mitchell, Henry Cabot Lodge, Madison Grant, Caspar Whitney, Winthrop Chanler, and Frederic Remington-while recovering the women on whom these men depended and without whom this version of the popular West would not exist. Bold also considers some of the costs of the frontier club formula, in terms of its impact on Indigenous peoples and its marginalization of other popular voices, including western writings by African Americans, white women, and non-elite white men. The book ends by briefly charting the frontier club''s enduring impression on western movies.Trade ReviewBased on archival research as well as the rich body of secondary material pertinent to the topic, The Frontier Club adds several new layers of insight into those who produced the 'western' and those who, from the beginning, noted its serious limitations. This one has the distinct advantage of offering the reader both an excellent empirical perspective and a keen sense of the critical issues underpinning development.' - Stuart Hanson, De Montfort University, UK 'Barker's analysis deftly explores the difference between a staged presentation and the manner in which this is translated into a live video feed, as well as the cultural influences that such "livecasting" has on audiences. The book is short but insightful, part of the new Palgrave Pivot series of brief books that tackle key topics with brevity and style, published in hardcover at a reasonable price and also available as a digital download. Live to Your Local Cinema demonstrates how live video broadcasting has democratized culture for the masses, making hitherto elite, often unaffordable spectacles available to all.' - W. W. Dixon, University of Nebraska Lincoln, Choice (August 2013) 'Live to Your Local Cinema provides an excellent overview of the history of live broadcast and is also a valuable resource for cinema exhibitors wishing to develop their relationship and engagement with this quite different audience for the growing number and range of Alternative Content on offer. Since reading Live to Your Local Cinema we've put in place a number of changes that I know that those who chose, for whatever reason, to experience their 'high culture' on screen in the cinema will appreciate. It seems that the livecast is here to stay and as the first book to make Alternative Content its main focus, we look forward to Martin's questions in the final chapter being answered and the debate around 'liveness' continuing.' - Jaki McDougall, CEO, Glasgow Film: GFT and Glasgow Film FestivalTable of ContentsThe Success-Story With No Name The Aesthetics of Livecasting A Portrait of Livecasts' Audiences The Many Meanings of 'Liveness' Livecasts' Audiences Talk about 'Liveness' The Cultural Status of Livecasts The Next Research Tasks? It is not the last word on any of its subject texts, but it serves as a robust contribution to a weighty, potentially inexhaustible debate.” (JosephYoung, Gramarye, Issue 19, 2021)“Fantasies of Time and Death makes us hungry to return to the primary worlds it discusses.” (Sarah R.A. Book SynopsisHere, Darren Elliot-Smith examines how alternative sexualities have recently emerged from the shadows in horror films and television programmes, with directors and producers employing an overtly queer horror aesthetic that unequivocally references homosexuality. Elliot-Smith case studies consider many forms of the queer horror genre: independent exploitation films ( A Far Cry from Home ), slashers ( Hellbent ) and even the representation of contemporary gay zombies in LA Zombie . Elliott-Smith deviates from analyzing the monster as a symbol of heterosexual fear and focuses instead on queer anxieties within gay male subcultures. Furthermore, he examines key works to reveal gay men's concerns about their assimilation into Western culture, their continuing association with the feminine, and the perpetuation of gay shame.

Book SynopsisThe Holocaust has been the focus of countless films in the United States, Great Britain, and Europe, and its treatment over the years has been the subject of considerable controversy. When finally permitted to portray the atrocities, filmmakers struggled with issues of fidelity to historical fact, depictions of graphic violence, and how to approach the complexities of the human condition on all sides of this horrific event. In Hollywood and the Holocaust, Henry Gonshak explores portrayals of the Holocaust from the World War II era to the present. In chapters devoted to films ranging from The Great Dictator to Inglourious Basterds, this volume looks at how these films have shaped perceptions of the Shoah. The author also questions if Hollywood, given its commercialism, is capable of conveying the Holocaust in ways that do justice to its historical trauma. Through a careful consideration of over twenty-five films across genresincluding Life Is Beautiful, Cabaret, The Reader, The Boys fTrade ReviewGonshak is responsible in debating his predecessor critics and eloquent in meditating on the ethical responsibilities of those who produce Hollywood films. Even though Gonshak is flexible in his aesthetics—comedy can work, historical accuracy is not necessarily required—most Hollywood films (which here include X-Men, 2000) do not have anything substantial to say about the Holocaust. Hollywood veers too often toward kitsch, and in his conclusion the author expresses the wish that Hollywood could learn from the more substantial Holocaust documentaries and fiction films produced in Europe. Insdorf discussed both Hollywood and European films, which ultimately makes for a more satisfying project. Yet Gonshak’s selection allows each film more depth, and he takes full advantage of this opportunity by staging one scrupulously crafted discussion after another. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty. * CHOICE *Hollywood and the Holocaust offers an important look at Hollywood's ongoing representations of the Holocaust aimed at a general readership not usually addressed by volumes on this subject. * Dillon Tribune *By what standards should we judge films about the Holocaust? That’s the provocative question that hangs over Hollywood and the Holocaust by Henry Gonshak, an English professor at Montana Tech. In examining older films, Gonshak rightly puts them in the context of their times. . . . In joining the growing shelf of books on the subject of the Holocaust and movies, Gonshak offers some insights as to how far we’ve come. * The Jewish Advocate *
