  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Beauty and Misogyny: Harmful cultural practices

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe new edition of Beauty and Misogyny revisits and updates Sheila Jeffreys' uncompromising critique of Western beauty practice and the industries and ideologies behind it. Jeffreys argues that beauty practices are not related to individual female choice or creative expression, but represent instead an important aspect of women's oppression. As these practices have become increasingly brutal and pervasive, the need to scrutinize and dismantle them is if anything more urgent now as it was in 2005 when the first edition of the book was published. The United Nations concept of "harmful traditional/cultural practices" provides a useful lens for the author to advance her critique. She makes the case for including Western beauty practices within this definition, examining their role in damaging women's health, creating sexual difference and enforcing female deference.First-wave feminists of the 1970s criticized pervasive beauty regimes such as dieting and depilation, but a later argument took hold that beauty practices were no longer oppressive now that women could "choose" them. In recent years the reality of Western beauty practices has become much more bloody and severe, requiring the breaking of skin and the rearrangement or amputation of body parts. Beauty and Misogyny seeks to make sense of why beauty practices have not only persisted but become more extreme. It examines the pervasive use of makeup, the misogyny of fashion and high-heeled shoes, and looks at the role of pornography in the creation of increasingly popular beauty practices such as breast implants, genital waxing, surgical alteration of the labia and other forms of self-mutilation. The book concludes by considering how a culture of resistance to these practices can be created.A new and thoroughly updated edition of this essential work will appeal to all levels of students and teachers of gender studies, cultural studies and feminist psychology, and to anyone with an interest in feminism, women and beauty, and women's health.Trade Review"This is without doubt the most sophisticated, well-researched, and compelling book ever written about the ways the ‘beauty’ industry produces and reproduces misogyny. Written from an unapologetically radical feminist perspective, students describe Beauty and Misogyny as transformative and life-changing."– Gail Dines, Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies, Wheelock College, Boston, USAPraise for the first edition"Beauty and Misogyny belongs in women's studies and public health classes and on the shelves of academics, clinicians, and parents of daughters. It would benefit any woman who was considering plastic surgery or buying a new tube of lipstick." – Michele Hoffnung, Quinnipiac University, USA in PsycCRITIQUES"Jeffreys’ mission is to shift women out of their collective complacency. The book’s central theme is an exploration of the use of sexuality by men to dominate women. Jeffreys offers no comfort zone for her readers. Book SynopsisThis is a book-length chronological study in English of Christa Wolf's works. It traces the development and continuity of the writer's major themes and concerns against the backdrop of her constantly evolving relationship to Marxism, and documents the rise of her feminist consciousness. It does not, however, focus only on political and feminist issues, but addresses all facets of Wolf's identity by showing how her works reflect her own self-understanding. Forced by the clash between her vision of a humane socialism and the practice of socialism she observed in the German Democratic Republic to reassess her role as a writer and critic, Wolf broke through to her unique style in The Quest for Christa T., a work initially repudiated in the GDR both for its unorthodox subject matter and for its unconventional form. Since then, Wolf has effectively challenged the restrictions placed on writers in the GDR by writing on topics such as the Nazi past (Patterns of Childhood), Romanticism (No PlacTable of Contents1. • Cambridge University Press Capitalism For and Against A Feminist Debate

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisPolitical philosophy and feminist theory have rarely examined in detail how capitalism affects the lives of women. Ann Cudd and Nancy Holmstrom take up opposing sides of the issue, debating whether capitalism is valuable as an ideal and whether as an actually existing economic system it is good for women. In a discussion covering a broad range of social and economic issues, including unequal pay, industrial reforms and sweatshops, they examine how these and other issues relate to women and how effectively to analyze what constitutes 'capitalism' and 'women's interests'. Each author also responds to the opposing arguments, providing a thorough debate of the topics covered. The resulting volume will interest a wide range of readers in philosophy, political theory, women's studies and global affairs.Trade Review'The staged debate between Cudd and Holstrom will be of particular interest to philosophically minded readers already generally familiar with the terrain. Most readers will begin their reading already having taken a side, but Cudd and Holstrom both make such convincing arguments, that generous and open readers will find in the debates a chance to revisit their own settled opinions. Their book is a gift in a political and academic climate where critical thinking often takes a back seat to ideological stances.' Marx and Philosophy Review of Books'Cudd and Holmstrom grapple with the issue of whether capitalism and women's interests can coincide … an interesting book written by two splendid analytical minds with a great passion for women's rights … this volume will be of critical interest to anyone studying feminist political philosophy. It will be an invaluable introduction for students of gender studies, sociology, politics, and political economy.' Philosophy in ReviewTable of ContentsAcknowledgements; Part I. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhy is feminist work carried out in international relations (IR)? What are the methodologies and methods that have been developed in order to do feminist research for IR? This contributory volume shows how, over the previous two decades, feminism has made crucial contributions to the study of international relations.Trade Review'This volume presents a marvellous account of feminist methodologies … This edited volume is instructive in illuminating feminist methodologies and in highlighting the insights gained from them … it takes a difficult topic and should serve as a catalyst for further debate.' Perspectives on Politics' … a thoroughly satisfying book that manages to integrate a diverse range of feminist IR scholarship without forcing it into a straitjacket. It is an important teaching tool, showing the rigor of feminist methods and providing helpful guideposts to those who venture onto the terrain of feminist international relations. It should be required reading in every IR graduate methodology course.' International Studies Review'This book provides excellent feminist scholarship for IR and other 'sister' disciplines such as development studies.' Based on interviews and original research, this book shows how the movement against sexual harassment fundamentally changed American life.Trade Review'Baker's book adds important concrete detail and facts to the narrative of sexual harassment. Moving away from the theoretical legal abstraction, she engages in a necessary descriptive and explanatory account of how the change in law really happened. … The book provides a fresh perspective on the issue of sexual harassment, adding the historical background and foundation necessary to understand the contours of the existing law, and the pre-existing concerns that drove the movement for a law responsive to the needs of women.' Book SynopsisThis 1996 book sheds light on the relationship between socialism and feminism through a detailed examination of Britain's first Marxist party, the Social Democratic Federation.Trade Review"Karen Hunt fills a remaining notable gap with her case study of the Social Democratic Federation (SDF), the Marxist wing of the British socialist movement, and its views on the position of women. In an impressive forensic exercise in political pathology, she dissects the theoretical inheritance, ideological leanings, and political policies and practices with regard to women's issues of this most masculinist of organizations." Sandra Stanley Holton, Albion"[Hunt] has carefully reconstructed the different strands in the SDF debates on a range of women-centered issues, from free love and married women's right to work, to suffrage, to the feminist movement, noting the shifts in the arguments over the life span of the Federation....Karen Hunt writes with clarity and her cautious, balanced conclusions reflect her academic integrity." Pamela M. Graves, International Labor and Working Class History"...one of the best books ever written on the subject of socialism and gender....This is the first review I have ever written in which I am tempted to move to platitudes of praise rather than provide even a brief survey of the contents." American Historical Review"Karen Hunt fill sa remaining notable gap with her case study of the Social Democratic Federation (SDF), the Marxist wing of the British socialist movement, and its views on the position of women. In an impressive forensic exercise in political policies and practices with regard to women's issues of this most masculinist of organizations. In so doing, she usefully reminds us that the SDF included figures, such as Dora Montefiore and Herbert Burrows, who sought to ensure more serious consideration of the Woman Question, in contest with some of the better-known vocal misogynists among its leadership, such as Belfort Bax."
