  • Echo: Wrapped in Memory

Lannoo Publishers Echo: Wrapped in Memory

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe essays and interviews in this book – published in conjunction with the exhibition Echo - explore the personal, universal and tactile memories of baby, child and motherhood, aging and nostalgia, handmaking and repair, and both the physical and emotional memories of clothing. The book features precious childhood drawings by designers Martin Margiela, Christian Lacroix, Mikio Sakabe, Bernhard Willhelm, Simone Rocha, Jean Paul Gaultier, amongst others. Alongside contemporary art and fashion, Echo sheds a unique light on the idea of the private, domestic, and quotidian by including ‘imperfect’ garments from the MoMu Collection: garments that reveal the presence of their previous wearers, that tell stories of a life lived, of scars, sweat, tears, and joy.

  • Femmes Fatales: Strong Women in Fashion

Waanders BV, Uitgeverij Femmes Fatales: Strong Women in Fashion

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFeatures work by an impressive list of international female designers. Besides the internationally famous names, it also considers the women behind the scenes of many fashion houses, whose far-reaching influence is something that has been completely overlooked in fashion history. Published to accompany an exhibition at Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, The Hague. 'The little seamstress' is how the renowned Coco Chanel was once disdainfully described by her contemporary Paul Poiret. He targeted her because she was a woman, but in fact he saw her as a major competitor. Times have changed. More fashion houses are now run by women than ever before. A perfect moment, therefore, for an overview that focuses on strong women in fashion. Femmes Fatales tells fashion history from the perspective of femail designers. Do they design differently for women than their male counterparts? What influence have they had? What does being a woman mean in terms of their creations? And what is their vision for fashion? This book includes work by Coco Chanel, Jeanne Lanvin, Elsa Schiaparelli, Mary Quant, Vivienne Westwood, Sonia Rykiel, Zandra Rhodes, Miuccia Prada, Maria Grazia Chiuri (Dior), Fong Leng, Sheila de Vries and Iris van Herpen, and many others. Text in Dutch and English.

Book SynopsisFashion experts take a fresh look at more than 40 Dior creations and talk about the creators, wearers, technology, conservation, publicity, and important women for Dior. Christian Dior himself led his fashion House, founded in 1947, for only 10 years, but conquered the world in that short time. The designers who followed in his footsteps, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and now Maria Grazia Chiuri, remained true to his Dior DNA. The New Look, the Dior line, Dior''s love of flowers and, of course, the Dior Dream are covered.Maria Grazia Chiuri, the first female chief designer for Dior, is known for her feminism and the stage she offers to female artists. Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen was therefore asked to create a photo series focusing on work by Christian Dior and Maria Grazia Chiuri. Maria Grazia Chiuri considers herself a curator of ideas. The photo series, in which her work enters into a dialogue with Christian Dior''s, shows what this means to her.

  • Sufi Lovers, Safavid Silks and Early Modern

Amsterdam University Press Sufi Lovers, Safavid Silks and Early Modern

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines a group of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century figural silks depicting legendary lovers from the Khamsa (Quintet) of epic Persian poetry. Codified by Nizami Ganjavi in the twelfth century, the Khamsa gained popularity in the Persian-speaking realm through illustrated manuscripts produced for the elite, creating a template for illustrating climactic scenes in the love stories of “Layla and Majnun” and “Khusrau and Shirin” that appear on early modern silks. Attributed to Safavid Iran, the publication proposes that dress fashioned from these silks represented Sufi ideals based on the characters. Migration of weavers between Safavid and Mughal courts resulted in producing goods for a sophisticated and educated elite, demonstrating shared cultural values and potential reattribution. Through an examination of primary source materials, literary analysis of the original text, and close iconographical study of figural designs, the study presents original cross-disciplinary arguments about patronage, provenance, and the socio-cultural significance of wearing these silks.Table of ContentsTable of Contents Acknowledgments List of Illustrations Notes on Transliteration Introduction Material Culture and Mysticism in the Persianate World PART I Chapter One Silks, Signatures and Self-fashioning Khamsa Narrative Silks in Scholarship The Famous Naqshband: Unrivalled in the Art of Textile Design Craftsmen and Consumers Self-Fashioning in the Early Modern Persianate World Chapter Two Dressed as King, Lover and Beloved: Khusrau and Shirin Lovers from Nizami’s >Khamsa The Romantic Tragedy of Nizami’s ‘Khusrau and Shirin’ Khusrau and Shirin in Paintings and Safavid Silks The Gaze and the Body: States of Dress and Undress Chapter Three Weaving Stories, Weaving Self: Layla and Majnun as Sufi Icons The Mystical Love Story of Nizami’s ‘Layla and Majnun’ Layla and Majnun in Paintings and Safavid silks The >Khamsa of Amir Khusrau Text and Textile in Sufi Poetry PART II Chapter Four The Divine Cloak of Majesty: Material Culture in Sufi Practice Garments as Gifts of Blessing, Piety and Power Chivalry, Spirituality, and Materiality in Sufism Khirqa: The Cloak of Spiritual Poverty Khamsa Silk as >Khirqa? Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis is a fascinating look at the origins of the iconic cheongsam dress, and its social and cultural importance in Singapore. Spanning almost a century, this book examines the origins and development of the cheongsam in the social context of Singapore since its introduction from Shanghai, China, in the 1920s to the present day. The cheongsam, a one-piece Chinese ladies' dress that was the epitome of Chinese identity and feminine beauty during the middle decades of the 20th century. Initially seen as a symbol of a trendy, new, Republican China, shorn of the shackles of the imperial system, the cheongsam soon adopted intellectual overtones, and was favoured by the sophisticated and society's elite at elaborate social functions. When it was abandoned following the success of the Communist Party in China, the cheongsam survived in Singapore as the garment of choice for independent, educated women.

Book SynopsisA comprehensive visual archive of the textile patterns, materials and products produced in the first 15 years of the acclaimed American accessory company BAGGU Designers Emily Sugihara, her mother Joan Sugihara and Ellen Vanderlaan started BAGGU in 2007 because they wanted a reusable bag that was functional, affordable, durable and nice-looking. When they couldn’t find one, they decided to make their own. The result was the now ubiquitous Standard Baggu. In the 15 years since, the BAGGU line has expanded to include various bags and everyday accessories, and has become known for its ever-changing assortment of seasonal prints. But their design philosophy remains the same—function, value, longevity and delight—with the aim of making affordable, quality products as pleasing as they are pragmatic. BAGGU: Hold Everything, 15 Years is a comprehensive catalog of the products and prints produced by BAGGU between 2007 and 2022, and features over 600 full-color product images, and reproductions of to-scale textile prints. Each copy of the book is bound in one of five different fabrics from the archive of BAGGU textile patterns. The book also includes a conversation between founders Emily Sugihara and Ellen Vanderlaan, in which they discuss the company's beginnings, history and evolution.
