John Wiley and Sons Ltd Letters to Hitler
Book SynopsisBetween 1925 and 1945 thousands of ordinary Germans of both sexes and all ages wrote letters to Hitler. Lost for decades, a large cache of these letters was recently discovered in the KGB Special Archive in Moscow, having been carted off to Russia by the Soviet Secret Police at the end of the war. The letters range from gushing love letters - 'I love you so much. Write to me, please,' this from a seven-year old girl named Gina - to letters from teachers, students, priests, businessmen and others expressing gratitude for alleviating poverty or restoring dignity to the German people. There are a few protest letters and the occasional desperate plea to release a loved one from a concentration camp, but the overwhelming majority are positive and even rapturous, shedding fresh light on the nature of the Hitler cult in Nazi Germany. This volume is the first publication of these letters in English. It comprises a selection of the letters and includes a contextualizing commentary that exTrade Review"A valuable addition to the available sources. There is also a lot here for the general reader: the letters are often surprising in tone and content, and sometimes funny."Literary Review"A historic gem ... Eberle's work is an interesting but chilling case study on how a seemingly educated and mature society can be manipulated to the point of blind fanaticism."Morning Star"Sheds a whole new light on life under the Nazis."Daily Express"An excellent example of the increased drive to portray history from the ordinary, everyday people - if that's what Hitler's followers could be called."Review 31"A history of the Third Reich at its most personal and individual; from the fawning letters of sycophants to desperate pleas for clemency from both active opponents and innocents swept up in terror ... an excellent book."The Australian"The letters have, like something from a Hans Fallada novel, the stamp of grimy, gritty truth."The Age"Gripping evidence on the relationship between Hitler and some ordinary Germans."Australian Journal of Politics and History"A unique and captivating view of one nation's devotion to its dictator."Deseret News"This collection of letters to Hitler from ordinary Germans is full of fascinating and sometimes disturbing testimonies to the charismatic power of the Nazi dictator. It adds notably to our knowledge of the German people's attitudes towards the Third Reich and its policies."Richard J Evans, University of Cambridge "This collection of letters to Hitler provides unique and fascinating insights into the social-psychological climate of the times. Here published for the first time in English, the long-lost letters from ordinary citizens read like voices from the past. Perhaps most strikingly they reveal loyalties to and support for a dictator and a regime we are still struggling to understand."Robert Gellately, author of Backing Hitler: Consent and Coercion in Nazi GermanyTable of ContentsIntroduction by Victoria Harris PART ONE: The ‘Time of Struggle': 1924-1932 1. John Wiley and Sons Ltd A Companion to Nazi Germany
Book SynopsisA Deep Exploration of the Rise, Reign, and Legacy of the Third Reich For its brief existence, National Socialist Germany was one of the most destructive regimes in the history of humankind. Since that time, scholarly debate about its causes has volleyed continuously between the effects of political and military decisions, pathological development, or modernity gone awry. Was terror the defining force of rule, or was popular consent critical to sustaining the movement? Were the German people sympathetic to Nazi ideology, or were they radicalized by social manipulation and powerful propaganda? Was the Final Solution the motivation for the Third Reich's rise to power, or simply the outcome? A Companion to Nazi Germany addresses these crucial questions with historical insight from the Nazi Party's emergence in the 1920s through its postwar repercussions. From the theory and context that gave rise to the movement, through its structural, cultural, economic, and social impacts, to the era's Trade Review“Overall this is a rich and stimulating essay companion, well worth dipping into as an introduction to state-of-the-art scholarship, and with a remarkable amount to offer for university teachers and students taking modules on this period.”Reviewer: Matthew Stibbe, Sheffield Hallam University, UKEuropean History Quarterly, Vol. 49, No. 1Table of ContentsNotes on Contributors ix Introduction 1Shelley Baranowski, Armin Nolzen, and Claus‐Christian W. Book SynopsisFascism, Architecture, and the Claiming of Modern Milan, 1922–1943 chronicles the dramatic architectural and urban transformation of Milan during the nearly twenty years of fascist rule. The commercial and financial centre of Italy and the birthplace of fascism, Milan played a central role in constructing fascism’s national image and identity as it advanced from a revolutionary movement to an established state power.Using a wide range of archival sources, Lucy M. Maulsby analyses the public buildings, from the relatively modest party headquarters to the grandiose Palace of Justice and the Palazzo del Popolo d’Italia, through which Mussolini intended to enhance the city’s image and solidify fascism’s presence in Milan. Maulsby establishes the extent to which Milan’s economic structure, social composition, and cultural orientation affected Il Duce’s plans for the city, demonstrating the inflTrade Review"Thorough, rich, and compelling, Architecture, Fascism, and the Claiming of Modern Milan lifts the discussion about architecture under fascism from the narrow confines of the public polemics of architects and carries it into the far more complex and nuanced world of politics." -- Diane Ghirardo School of Architecture, University of Southern California 'This is an interesting and well documented book...It will be of great interest to historians of architecture, fascism, urban Italy and Milan, as well as to the general reader.' -- John Foot Annali d'Italianistica Vol 33:2015Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Abbreviations Introduction 1. University of Toronto Press Spanish Fascist Writing
Book SynopsisSpanish Fascist Writing presents the first collection of Spanish fascist texts in English translation and offers an intellectual and political history of fascist writing in Spain, a history that resituates the country within the larger unfolding of right-wing extremism worldwide from the early twentieth century to the present. The manifestos, newspaper articles, essays, letters, and pieces of prose fiction gathered in this volume demonstrate why the Spanish case proves essential to a comprehensive understanding of fascism in general. These Spanish fascist texts also highlight the need for comparative analysis in order to better grasp the transnational character of fascism, fascism’s profound roots in colonialism, fascism’s multiple temporalities, and the rise in recent years of right-wing extremism throughout the world. In short, Spanish Fascist Writing takes Spain from the margins to the forefront of fascist studies. Trade Review"Spanish Fascist Writing is a timely collection of texts, including manifestos, speeches, and letters, arranged to introduce readers to a wide spectrum of themes. Together these texts enrich our understanding of right-wing extremism in Spain and worldwide in the past and present. The collection also adds to our interpretation of the historical genealogies of European fascism. Ciano’s life serves as a lens through which to gain a better understanding of crucial issues of Italian and European fascism, including the fascistization of society and politics, foreign relations, and the problem of succession. The biography follows an innovative thematic structure that focuses on major aspects of Ciano’s life, including his family, his political career, his diplomacy, and his desire to succeed Mussolini. John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Rise of Ecofascism: Climate Change and the
Book SynopsisThe world faces a climate crisis and an ascendant far right. Are these trends related? How does the far right think about the environment, and what openings does the coming crisis present for them? This incisive new book traces the long history of far-right environmentalism and explores how it is adapting to the contemporary world. It argues that the extreme right, after years of denying the reality of climate change, are now showing serious signs of reversing their strategy. A new generation of far-right activists has realized that impending environmental catastrophe represents their best chance yet for a return to relevance. In reality, however, their noxious blend of conspiracy, hatred and violence is no solution at all: it is the ‘eco-socialism of fools’. Only a real commitment to climate justice can save us and stop the far right in its tracks. No-one interested in the struggle against right-wing extremism and the crusade for climate justice can afford to miss this trenchant critique of burgeoning ecofascism.Trade Review“An urgent and comprehensive survey of the risks generated by the nature politics of today's far right – and how to fight them.”Paul Mason, author of How to Stop Fascism “Since the attacks in Christchurch and El Paso in 2019, public discussion of ecofascism has become more urgent than ever. Texas A & M University Press Landmark Speeches of National Socialism
Book SynopsisAs historians have long noted, public oratory has seldom been as pivotal in generating and sustaining the vitality of a movement as it was during the rise and rule of the National Socialist Party, from 1919 to 1945. Led by the charismatic and indefatigable Hitler, National Socialists conducted one of the most powerful rhetorical campaigns ever recorded. Indeed, the mass addresses, which were broadcast live on radio, taped for re-broadcast, and in many cases filmed for play on theater newsreels throughout the Third Reich, constituted one of the most thorough exploitations of media in history.Because such evil lay at the heart of the National Socialist movement, its overwhelming rhetoric has often been negatively characterized as propaganda. As Randall Bytwerk points out, however, the ""propaganda"" label was anything but negative in the minds of the leaders of the National Socialist movement. In their view, the clear, simplistic, and even one-sided presentation of information was necessary to mobilize effectively all elements of the German population into the National Socialist program.Gathered here are thirteen key speeches of this historically significant movement, including Hitler's announcement of the party's reestablishment in 1925 following the unsuccessful Beer Hall Putsch, four addresses by Joseph Goebbels, the 1938 Kristallnacht speech by Julius Streicher, and four speeches drafted as models for party leaders' use on various public occasions. The volume concludes with Adolf Hitler's final public address on January 30, 1945, three months before his suicide. Several of these works are presented for the first time in English translation.Bytwerk provides a brief introduction to each speech and allows the reader to trace the development and downfall of the Nazi party. ""Landmark Speeches of National Socialism"" is an important volume for students of rhetoric, World War II, Nazi Germany, and the Holocaust.

Liverpool University Press Literary Censorship in Francisco Franco's Spain
Book SynopsisThis book presents two systems of censorship and literary promotion, revealing how literature can be molded to support authoritarian regimes. The issue is complex in that at a descriptive level the strategies and methods "new states" use to control communication through the written word can be judged by how and when formal decrees were issued, and how publishing media, whether in the form of publishing companies or at the individual level, engaged with political overseers. But equally, literature was a means of resistance against an authoritarian regime, not only for writers but for readers as well. From the point of view of historical memory and intellectual history, stories of "people without history" and the production of their texts through the literary "underground" can be constructed from subsequent testimony: from books sold in secret, to the writings of women in jail, to books that were written but never published or distributed in any way, and to myriad compelling circumstances resulting from living under fascist authority. A parallel study on two fascist movements provides a unique viewpoint at literary, social and political levels. Comparative analysis of literary censorship/literary reward allows an understanding of the balance between dictatorship, official policy, and what literary acts were deemed acceptable. The regime need to control its population is revealed in the ways that a particular type of literature was encouraged; in the engagement of propoganda promotion; and in the setting up of institutions to gain international acceptance of the regime. The work is an important contribution to the history of twentieth-century authoritarianism and the development fascist ideas.

Liverpool University Press Fascism and Constitutional Conflict: The British
Book SynopsisThis work makes an original and important contribution both to the field of British fascist/extreme Right studies and to the Ulster question. Given that British fascism was a phenomenon of the inter-war period, first making its appearance shortly after the Irish question had been constitutionally settled by the creation of the Irish Free State and the autonomous entity of Northern Ireland, it has been understandable that British historians should focus chiefly on developments in Britain. In the process, however, Northern Ireland as a site of fascist interest and activity has been largely overlooked; yet it engaged the attention of all the significant fascist movements, from Rotha Lintorn-Orman’s British Fascists and Sir Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists to the less significant Imperial Fascist League in the inter-war period, Mosley’s Union Movement in the post-war period and the National Front and British National Party during the period of the Troubles, together with smaller formations thereafter. In focusing on Northern Ireland, this study provides insights into the strengths and weaknesses of British fascist organisations throughout the twentieth century. It also demonstrates that the region was an extremely difficult terrain for those organisations to cultivate, whether they were supportive of nationalism/republicanism or Unionism/loyalism.Trade ReviewReviews ‘[A] lively and stimulating survey… This saga is expertly detailed by Loughlin, whose focus on Enoch Powell indicates one route to far-right success in the North: become a unionist.’ Niall Meehan, History Ireland 'Very well-researched and well-written, this is an original study that breaks new ground.' Professor Nigel Copsey, Teesside University'Building upon his established expertise on Ulster political history, Loughlin examines the succession of far-right parties with roots in Britain.... [He] explores the fascinating dynamic between Mosleyite appeals to Catholic communities in Britain and analysis of the north'James Greer, Irish Historical Studies 'This is a comprehensive, well-written and lively account of the British far-right's interest in Northern Ireland [discussing] organisations such as the British Fascists, the Ulster Fascists, the Union Movement, the National Front, the British National Party and Combat-18. [Loughlin's] fine book… makes useful reading for anyone observing the emergence of… toxic politics in Ireland today.'Brian Hanley, Saothar‘[Fascism and Constitutional Conflict] corrects simplistic assessments of the relationship between British fascism and Northern Ireland. In bridging these discrete historiographies, Loughlin has provided an original and valuable contribution to both.’ English Historical Review'Loughlin raises critical questions about what fascist movements are, the sources of their ideas and why they succeed and fail in attempts to take and influence power. Fascism and Constitutional Conflict is a fresh perspective on them.' Liverpool University Press Senoritas in Blue: The Making of a Female
Book SynopsisThis book explores the role played by the Female Section of the Spanish Fascist Party (Seccion Femenina de la Falange -- SF) in promoting women's political and professional rights within the authoritarian Franco regime in Spain. While acknowledging the organisational and financial ties, as well as the great ideological affinity between the SF and the regime, Inbal Ofer demonstrates how the SF's national leadership promoted an autonomous social and political agenda. Despite the need to constantly manoeuvre between the cultural and legal dictates of Francoist society, the unique activities and personal experiences of SF members at the heart of political power became a model for an array of policies and reforms that greatly improved the lives of Spanish women. From a unique gender perspective the topic of the Seccion Femenina de la Falange contributes to the debate on the nature of authoritarian regimes by reflecting on issues of policy formation and implementation; mass mobilisation; and the role of coercion alongside the creation of a "culture of consent". In exchange for a long-term commitment to the survival of the regime, both the Catholic Church and the Spanish Falange gained considerable administrative power and a measure of freedom to act on political and social matters. As explained, the promotion of women's legal and political equality (reflected in the struggle to amend the Civil Code and ratify the Law for Political and Professional Rights) is a good example of the way organs within the "regime" made use of their position in order to legitimise non-consensual forms of activism. The SF efforts to increase the number of gainfully employed women and improve their working-conditions is an example of the unexpected uses made by agents of the "regime" of the freedom of action accorded them in the public arena. Inbal Ofer raises questions regarding the nature of women's political activism and capacity for autonomous action within authoritarian regimes, setting out the debate on the nature of feminism and its relation to female activism and the promotion of women as a collective. More specifically she engages with those works that critically evaluate women's public contribution within Catholic and / or nationalist settings, and is required reading for interested in the history of modern Europe.Table of ContentsIntroduction; Prologue: The Birth of a Female Political Elite; Nurses & Students: Education, Professional Training & the Civil War Experience in the Shaping of Two Generations of Leadership; The National Syndicalist Woman: The Genealogy of a Gender Identity; Bridging the Gap between Elitist & Mass Politics: Gender Legislation of the Seccion Femenina de la FET; Am I that Body? Liverpool University Press Catholicism, War and the Foundation of Francoism:
Book SynopsisSpain's first democracy was announced to popular jubilation in April 1931, a new dawn ushered in without a single shot being fired. Yet just over five years later the country was plunged into a brutal civil war that bequeathed hundreds of thousands of deaths and an authoritarian dictatorship under General Francisco Franco that lasted almost forty years. This book analyses Spain's dramatic political shift, reassessing the role of the right as it mobilised against the Second Republic, swinging from ostensibly "moderate" Catholic conservatism to fascist violence. By providing the first detailed study of the uniformed, paramilitary Juventud de Accion Popular (JAP), Sid Lowe challenges the historiographical orthodoxy on Spanish fascism and assumptions about the role of the hegemonic right-wing party during the Republican years, Jose Maria Gil Robles's CEDA. Drawing on a wide range of previously uncovered primary material, he demonstrates that much of the parliamentary right, its leadership included, abandoned the legal road to power when it could no longer use democracy as a Trojan Horse with which to conquer the state. It throws vital new light on the conspiracy to destroy the Republic, the Nationalist war effort, the creation of the new state, and the true social and political origins of the Franco regime. Published in association with the Canada Blanch Centre for Contemporary Spanish Studies.Trade Review"Dr Lowe fuses social and political analysis to demonstrate how, at the grass roots of Spanish society, the political culture of the long-lived Franco dictatorship was crucially instigated by the radical, mass Catholic youth movement, JAP. Lowe's originality lies in the fact that his analysis pinpoints the moment and demonstrates the mechanism by which radical Catholics in Spain became fascists. In doing this he has cut the gordian knot that inhibits much of the conventional historiography on the Spanish Catholic right during the 1930s." -- Helen Graham, Dept. of History, Royal Holloway University of LondonTable of ContentsGlossary & Abbreviations; Introduction: 'Immense shame, physical repugnance': Responding to the Republic (The Spanish Right & the JAP After 1931); 'The youth of the new Spain': The Crusade to Save the Fatherland (The JAP until October 1934); 'An iron fist against the anti-Spain': Bringing in the New State (The JAP from October 1934 to December 1935); 'To win or to die': The General Elections (The JAP from December 1935 to February 1936); 'We'll become Nazis if we have to': The Ominous Spring (The JAP from February to July 1936); 'Selfless auxiliaries, enthusiastic servants': Joining the Rising (The JAP from July to December 1936); 'Militias of sacrifice': The Crusade for God, Spain & the New State (The JAP at war until April 1937); Conclusion: 'A magnificent harvest': The Destruction of Democracy in Spain (The JAP, the Right & Fascism from 1931 to 1937); Notes; Bibliography; Index.

Liverpool University Press Jorge Semprún: The Spaniard Who Survived the
Book SynopsisSpanish by birth, Parisian by adoption, Semprún (1923-2011) was a legendary figure on the front lines of twentieth-century European history. During the first half of his life he was an exile of the Spanish Civil War, a member of the French Resistance, a Nazi camp survivor, and clandestine agent for the Spanish Communist Party. After repeatedly risking his life from the 1930s to the 1960s, he reinvented himself as a prolific writer who turned the extraordinary material from his own life into a series of autobiographical novels, beginning with The Long Voyage, his 1963 masterpiece about his deportation to Buchenwald. Semprún was equally at home amongst the madrileños of his childhood, fellow prisoners of the Buchenwald concentration camp, politicians, and artists and writers, such as his close friend Yves Montand or Gabriel García Márquez. He is best known internationally as a prize-winning novelist and memoirist, and an Oscar-nominated screenwriter. In collaboration with Alain Resnais and Costa-Gavras he wrote the screenplays for, respectively, La guerre est finie and Z. In Spain, his extraordinary achievements were recognised when in 1988 he was named Minister of Culture. The research for this biography draws on archival materials from Spain, France, Germany, the United States and Russia; it includes many interviews with family members, close friends, politicians, and artists including former Spanish Prime Minister Felipe González, and film director Costa Gavras. Published in association with the Canada Blanch Centre for Contemporary Spanish Studies.Trade ReviewAfter reading this lively and intriguing biography, Im amazed that most of us know so little about Jorge Semprun, even though weve likely seen films that he inspired or wrote. This man of great zest, talent and courage who played so many roles in the crises of his timeunderground resister, novelist, cabinet minister and more--reminds me of no one so much as Andre Malraux. Soledad Fox's superb biography tells his story with clarity, grace, and high style, just as Semprun lived. Soledad Fox Maura writes respectfully, but without shirking the controversial aspects of Sempruns life. And she brings new facts to light. A good biography is one that transforms its subject into a person made of flesh and blood. The operation may cause certain readers to feel disenchanted. I am sure, however, that for most readers of this biography, the figure of Jorge Semprun will not lose any of its power. What is made clearer than ever is that Semprun had a very difficult life. He risked it on more than one occasion, and he always survived, something which would be unfair to hold against him. He lived intensely, on the front lines of the great upheavals of the European 20th Century. And he then had the talent, the intelligence, and the knowledge to turn the ensemble of his books into one of the most accurate chronicles of the period. Liverpool University Press Dictatorship and the Electoral Vote: Francoism
Book SynopsisWhy do dictatorships have elections? Dictatorship and the Electoral Vote analyses the role of elections in two dictatorships that were born in the Era of Fascism but survived up to the 1970s: the Portuguese New State and Francoism. A comparative study of the electoral vote held by both dictatorships is revealing at many organizational and structural levels. The multiple political interactions involved in elections worldwide have been subject to social science scrutiny but rarely encompass historical context. The analysis of the electoral vote held by Iberian dictatorships is uniquely placed to link the two. The issues to hand include: drawing of electoral rolls; evolution of the number of people allowed to vote; candidate selection processes; propaganda methods; impact on the institutional structure of the regime; the socio-political biographies of the candidates; the electoral turnout and final tally; relationship between the central and peripheral authorities of the state; and the viewpoint of regime authorities on the holding of elections. Comparative analysis of all these issues enables a better understanding of the political nature of these dictatorships as well as a comprehensive explanation of the historical roots and evolution of the elections these dictatorship held since 1945. Based on primary archival documents, some of them never previously accessed, the book offers a detailed explanation of how these dictatorships used elections to consolidate their political authority and provides a historical approach that allows placing both countries in the framework of European electoral history and in the history of the political evolution of Iberian dictatorships between the Axis defeat and their breakdown in the mid-seventies.

Rutgers University Press After Authority: Global Art Cinema and Political
Book SynopsisAfter Authority explores the tendency in art cinema to respond to political transition by turning to ambiguity, a system that ideally stems the reemergence of authoritarian logics in art and elsewhere. By comparing films from Italy, Hungary, South Korea, and the United States, this book contends that the aesthetic tradition of ambiguity in art cinema can be traced to post-authoritarian conditions and that it is in the context of a transition away from authoritarianism where art cinema aesthetics become legible. Art cinema, then, can be seen as a mode of cinematic practice that is at its core political, as its constitutive ambiguity finds its roots in the rejection of centralized and hierarchical configurations of authority. Ultimately, After Authority proposes a history of art cinema predicated on the potentials, possibilities, and politics of ambiguity.Trade Review“Confident, convincing, and timely, After Authority is a challenging and provocative work. Poesía de los campos de concentración

Los 64 poemas que recoge este libro pertenecen a hombres y mujeres, niños, jóvenes y mayores, judíos y gentiles, cuyas vidas y versos fueron arrebatados del olvido por el investigador Michael Moll. Taylor & Francis European Fascist Movements
Book SynopsisThis volume offers a fresh and original collection of primary sources on interwar European fascist movements. These sources reflect new approaches to fascism that emphasise the practical, transnational experience of fascism as a social movement, contextualising ideological statements within the historical moments they were produced.Divided into 18 geographically based chapters, contributors draw together the history of various fascist and right-wing movements, selecting sources that reflect themes such as transnational ties, aesthetics, violence, female activism, and the instrumentalisation of race, gender, and religion. Each chapter provides a chronological, narrative account of movements interspersed with complete primary sources, from political speeches, internal movement circulars and articles, police reports, oral history, songs and music, photographs, artworks, poetry, and anti-fascist sources. The volume as a whole seeks to introduce readers to the diversity of fascistTrade Review"This is an important collection of sources, many available in English for the first time. European Fascist Movements gives the lie to the fascists’ own claims to be unified, well-organised and ideologically rigorous, showing instead how they grew in an ad hoc and reactive fashion, shape-shifting as circumstances demanded."Professor Dan Stone, Royal Holloway, University of London"This book is the product of a unique convergence of experts across the widest possible range of country case studies who have supplied the best of their expertise, not only in terms of framing narratives but also in terms of curating lists of previously unknown to most primary sources …What it also manages to do is to be supremely useful to students of fascism while also acquainting more advanced researchers with sources that they would not have come across before."Professor Aristotle Kallis, Keele UniversityTable of ContentsEuropean Fascist Movements: An Introduction 1.
