Book SynopsisThe first book in a contemporary fantasy series that introduces the fast-talking Greta Helsing, doctor to London's supernatural community.Trade ReviewThis book is a joy to read, unlocking every bit of delicious promise in the premise -- B&N SCI-FI & FANTASY BLOGA darkly delicious adventure featuring a quirky new heroine. Strange Practice breathes new life into the undead -- James Bennett, author of CHASING EMBERSStrange Practice surprises and delights. It's completely different from anything I've read before. It ticks so many boxes: action, mystery, suspense, an exciting and different world adjacent to our own to name but a few. But the greatest elements of the book are the characters. They shine -- BOOKBAGStrange Practice is a book that really enchanted me from the very first page . . . impossible to put down . . . I can't imagine much that would please my bookwormish self more than reading more about Greta Helsing, and her life as a doctor to the supernatural and their various unexpected ailments . . . Strange Practice is a homerun in every aspect -- BOOKWORM BLUESA remarkably well-realised world and cast of characters . . . this was an absolute delight to read. I look forward to more time spent with Greta -- FORBIDDEN PLANETa warm quilt of a thing that's made for curling up with . . . I miss this newest Helsing already -- NPR BOOKSWhat a splendid adventure this is - Dr Greta Helsing is a brilliant character . . . The underlying mystery is nicely twisty, and Dr Helsing has a quirky coterie of undead friends to aid her on her quest . . . promises to be a splendid new urban fantasy series -- ESPRESSO COCOReaders will look forward to more of Greta's adventures. An imaginative, delightfully droll debut -- KIRKUSAn exceptional and delightful debut, in the tradition of Good Omens -- Elizabeth BearShaw balances an agile mystery with a pitch-perfect, droll narrative and cast of loveable misfit characters -- SHELF AWARENESSVampires, demons, ghouls, supernatural cults and all manner of inexplicable jiggery-pokery. What's not to love? The characterisation is bang on and I was left wanting to learn more about each one of the creatures, human or otherwise, that Greta meets . . . The story is unique enough to remain consistently intriguing and contains plenty of unexpected twists and turns. I can only hope Vivian Shaw writes many more Greta Helsing novels. There is tons of potential for this to become a series that will just run and run. I can tell you now that if she does write more I'll be first in line to read them -- THE ELOQUENT PAGEAn appropriately dark breath of fresh air . . . Greta is a refreshing urban fantasy heroine, strong and smart and utterly normal, despite her chosen profession. Readers who enjoy urban fantasy and are getting tired of cookie-cutter female protagonists will find this a pleasant surprise -- BOOKLISTA satisfying and surprising read, with rich imagery, nuance, and real compassion for its characters - give Strange Practice a shot! -- Elliott James, author of CHARMINGWritten with elegance, wit, and compassion. The prose is gorgeous, the wit is mordant, and the ideas are provocative. Also, there are ghouls -- Laura Amy Schlitz, author of FIRE SPELLThis story was delightful in so many ways! -- BOOKS, BONES & BUFFYIn Vivian Shaw's Strange Practice, a charmingly unusual doctor and her charges keep the city of London from grave danger. In the process, they peel back the covers of familiar (and according to them, somewhat 'libelous') stories to find that reality - especially with the undead - is more poignant and complex than it seems at first glance. An excellent adventure' -- Fran Wilde, author of UPDRAFTShaw's lively debut introduces a great cast of characters who should sustain this new series for many volumes to come -- LIBRARY JOURNALA rollicking adventure with real substance, rooted enough in the traditions of the genre to have real weight, while also firmly located in the modern world. Combine this with sharp writing and great characters and - since this is described as the first Greta Helsing novel - you have what promises to be a great series. -- BLUE BOOK BALLOONVivian Shaw has written an astoundingly accomplished debut novel . . . a compelling, well-characterised novel with tight pacing and a great sense of humour. You should run, not walk, to get your copy now. (Seriously. I'm not joking. It's so good.) -- Liz BourkeThe author has packed her book with characters who are a pleasure to spend time with -- SCIFINOWThe book's mix of humor, mystery, urban fantasy, and gothic horror ultimately struck all the right chords with me . . . I'm already looking forward to the next one -- BIBLIOSANCTUM

Book SynopsisTrade Review“[A] serious, heartfelt novel [that] turns the machinery of fantasy inside out.”—The New York Times (Editor’s Choice)“A spellbinding stereograph, a literary adventure novel that is also about privilege, power, and the limits of being human. The Magician King is a triumphant sequel.”—NPR.org“[The Magician King] is The Catcher in the Rye for devotees of alternative universes. It’s dazzling and devil-may-care. . . . Grossman has created a rare, strange, and scintillating novel.”—Chicago Tribune“The Magician King is a rare achievement, a book that simultaneously criticizes and celebrates our deep desire for fantasy.”—The Boston Globe“Grossman has devised an enchanted milieu brimming with possibility, and his sly authorial voice gives it a literary life that positions The Magician King well above the standard fantasy fare.”—San Francisco Chronicle“Grossman expands his magical world into a boundless enchanted universe, and his lively characters navigate it with aplomb.”—The New Yorker“Grossman is brilliant at creating brainy, distinct, flawed, complex characters, and nearly as good at running them through narrative gauntlets that inventively tweak the stories that generations have grown up on.”—The Portland Oregonian“The Magician King, the immensely entertaining new novel by Lev Grossman, manages to be both deep and deeply enjoyable.”—Chicago Sun-Times“Readers who have already enjoyed The Magicians should lose no time in picking up The Magician King. For those who haven’t, read both books: Grossman’s work is solid, smart, and engaging adult fantasy.”—The Miami Herald“Now that Harry Potter is through in books and films, grown-up fans of the boy wizard might want to give this nimble fantasy series a try.”—New York Post“Lev Grossman’s The Magician King is a fresh take on the fantasy-quest novel—dark, austere, featuring characters with considerable psychological complexity, a collection of idiosyncratic talking animals (a sloth who knows the path to the underworld, a dragon in the Grand Canal), and splendid set pieces in Venice, Provence, Cornwall, and Brooklyn.”—The Daily Beast“In this page-turning follow-up to his bestselling 2009 novel The Magicians, Grossman takes another dark, sarcastically sinister stab at fantasy, set in the Narnia-esque realm of Fillory.”—Entertainment Weekly“The Magician King is clearly the middle book in a trilogy, but it’s that rare creature that bridges the gap between tales and still stands on its own. And just as the first book showed that growing up is hard no matter how much power you have, it shows that becoming an adult involves far more than just reaching the right age.”—The A.V. Club“Fabulous fantasy spiked with bitter adult wisdom—not to be missed.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“Fans of The Magicians will find this sequel a feast and will be delighted that a jaw-dropping denouement surely promises a third volume to come.”—Booklist

Book Synopsis Despite its well-earned reputation as the richest world in fantasy, there exists a notable, troubling problem in Tolkien''s legendarium: the existence of a sentient, rational being for whom no sympathy or moral feeling is ever shown. Examining the origin stories of the orc, which changed over time according to Tolkien''s own worries about whether orcs were redeemable, this book endeavors to show that these inhuman creatures are, in fact, among the most human (perhaps all-too-human) to be found in The Lord of the Rings. This work discusses racism and class hierarchies in Tolkien''s writings, contexts in which the characterization of orcs is particularly noticeable. But Tolkien''s own writings reveal the nature of orcs to be worthy of sympathy, despite their often dehumanized or demonized depictions. Focusing on key scenes from The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings, this study uncovers the richly diverse cultures, as well as the distinctive personalities of various orcs, who turn out to be a far cry from the monsters they are taken to be in the popular imagination. A revised understanding of the orcs as a people presents Middle-earth''s history, geopolitics, and cultural anthropology in a new light.
