Book SynopsisMoving away from his earlier belief in a short, catastrophic history of the Earth, this volume shows how Buckland envisages instead progressive change as the Earth gradually cooled as it was prepared for human occupation. Extinct creatures did not die out because they were poorly designed; God loved the dinosaurs and had adapted them to their various circumstances.Table of ContentsList of Engravings, Explanation of the Plates, Index

  • Taylor & Francis Evolution and Behavior Foundations of Psychology

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe relationship between how we evolved and how we behave is a controversial and fascinating field of study. From how we choose a mate to how we socialize with other people, the evolutionary process has an enduring legacy on the way we view the world. Evolution and Behavior provides students with a thorough and accessible introduction to this growing discipline.Placing evolutionary psychology in context with the core areas of psychology â developmental, cognitive and social â the book explores some of the most fundamental questions we can ask about ourselves. Taking students through the principles of natural selection, it provides a nuanced understanding of key topics such as: cognitive development and the role of intelligence, memory, emotions and perception, mental health and abnormal psychology, sexual reproduction and family relationships, the development of culture. Trade Review"As this book demonstrates clearly, behavior becomes immensely more comprehensible through the lens of evolution. Workman and Reader’s text is thorough and readable, and not afraid to tackle the issues that many see as most challenging from an evolutionary perspective, such as culture and mental illness."– Dr Michael E. Price, Department of Life Sciences, Brunel University London, UK Table of Contents1. Why the fuss? Evolution and human behavior 2. How did we get here: human evolution and genetics 3. • Taylor & Francis Ltd The Physics of Evolution

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides an introduction to the significant role of physics in evolution, based on the ideas of matter and energy resource flow, organism self-copying, and ecological change. The text employs these ideas to create quantitative models for important evolutionary processes. Many fields of science and engineering have come up against the problem of complex designwhen details become so numerous that computer power alone cannot make progress. Nature solved the complex-design problem using evolution, yet how it did so has been a mystery. Both laboratory experiments and computer-simulation attempts eventually stopped evolving. Something more than Darwin's ideas of heredity, variation, and selection was needed. The solution is that there is a fourth element to evolution: ecological change. When a new variation is selected, this can change the ecology, and the new ecology can create new opportunities for even more new variations to be selected. • Cambridge University Press Structural Equation Modeling Applications in Ecological and Evolutionary Biology

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisStructural equation modelling (SEM) is a technique that is used to estimate, analyse and test models that specify relationships among variables. The ability to conduct such analyses is essential for many problems in ecology and evolutionary biology. This book begins by explaining the theory behind the statistical methodology, including chapters on conceptual issues, the implementation of an SEM study and the history of the development of SEM. The second section provides examples of analyses on biological data including multi-group models, means models, P-technique and time-series. The final section of the book deals with computer applications and contrasts three popular SEM software packages. Aimed specifically at biological researchers and graduate students, this book will serve as valuable resource for both learning and teaching the SEM methodology. Moreover, data sets and programs that are presented in the book can also be downloaded from a website to assist the learning process.Table of ContentsPart I. Theory: 1.
